Parsons, Rivers go back a long way
When asked how Doc Rivers, the coach of the Boston Celtics, knows him so well and long, Rockets forward Chandler Parsons responded with a question of his own.
“How does the coach of the Boston Celtics not draft me?” Parsons said.
The Rockets picked up Parsons in the second round of the 2011 draft after the Celtics took forward JaJuan Johnson with the 25th pick that season. The Rockets acquired Johnson in the sign-and-trade deal that sent Courtney Lee to Boston, but cut him before the season.
“I thought I was going to go to the Celtics, 100 percent,” Parsons said of the draft that season. “That was probably my best workout. I killed it.”
Parsons grew up about five minutes away from Rivers’ home in Winter Park, Fla. He played at the rival high school, Winter Park Lake Howell and played with Rivers’ son Jeremiah Rivers on an AAU team, often working out with Rivers’ children.
“I’ve known Chandler since sixth grade,” Rivers said. “Watching him turn into the player he has is really nice.”

Holy deja vu

he got game, i like him a lot, a hell lot more than jjj :-\

How do we take JR Giddens over DJ 3000. Edited. Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline. happens

Rivers certainly has minimal input when it comes to drafting players. I'm sure he mentioned Chandler but Danny and co didn't listen or had him lower in their rankings.
We needed length upfront and it was a mistake to let this kid slip by. I'm sure 20 other teams feel this way.
He was unconscious tonight against us , and reading the history, i can see why. He is ticked off he is not a celtic. I would love to have him on the team.
-
Woulda been a killer killer pick. Especially over JJJ.
-
Eh, hindsight is 20/20. On the other hand, we drafted Rondo, Avery, and Sully between 19-21, so you win some, you lose some (Giddens, JJJ, etc.) in the draft.
-
Imagine if it had gone down like that. Having Parsons now on his contract..such a boon. Oh well.
-
Doc also doesn't BS and even though Parsons is buddies with his fam it doesn't mean he walked into Danny's office and said "draft him." If I recall correctly, Parsons was rated as a 2nd round pick and probably went off the board around the time he was supposed to. Heck, people thought we reached for JJJ, who was an All American.
It happens. Grats to Parsons for making the most of his opportunity.

And having picked Greg Smith over Moore as well.
Oh, well.

Parsons certainly would have made Green expendable. One of the few examples of a player the Celtics could theoretically have had on the cheap who would be better than Green.

Ahhhh yes,
but would he have even sniffed the court under Doc Rivers?
Not so fast I say, Doc doesnt give rooks much run and I am not so sure he gets much of a chance like he did/does in Houston.

Yeah, like Sullinger.

Reading some of the older JaJuan threads is funny now. Quite a few posters here compared him to Marcus Camby, David West and KG. I even read his timing was similar to Bill Russell. ;D

Yeah, like Sullinger.
Sullinger fills a need and we are desparate for anyone who resembles a post player that can rebound. He has stepped up to be sure and that is why he plays.
Parsons would be buried behind Green and Pierce. To say otherwise is ludicrous.
-
That would have been bomb if we had Parsons.
We really messed that JJJ pick.

Meh. We turned it into Courtney Lee. I'd say that Ainge redeemed himself.

While I agree we are in need of a bigman, I don't think that's why Sully got his chance. I think it had more to do with Sully understanding our D and having a high bball iq. I could easily see Doc riding Bass/Collins if he thought Sully wasn't ready.

We turned the second round pick and salary into Courtney Lee, but that's also a moot point, because without Green we don't thave that second rd pick.

The whole point is that with Parsons, we wouldn't have Green. Right now, Parsons is the better player on both sides of the floor and makes about 1/9th the money Green does.

Not sure we dont trade for Green because of Parsons. That was a Perkins dump and we needed younger more athletic players which Green is/was. I do agree that if a couple of your what ifs? come true we might not re sign Green this year though.
Still doesnt change the fact that Doc doesnt play rookies a lot unless forced by circumstance. History is on my side on this one IMHO.
I do like Sullinger and Parsons both. Not meaning hate on them, just pointing out a trend we all know is in place on this team.

Maybe Ainge would have been able to make that happen even without the free 2nd rounder, although it would have hurt more (we'd have to give up one of our own). It was worth it to bring Lee over here. JJJ at least contributed his salary to the cause.
I just feel like he deserves a little credit for salvaging a pick that didn't work out, even though it's not the best possible result.

I've long said that Ainge's biggest strength is his exit strategy.

Man, I am SO effing sick of hearing people say this.
It has been so thoroughly debunked (both on this board and in other places) multiple times, I really don't understand how anyone can still think it.
History is not on your side, you are just conveniently choosing to ignore the massive body of evidence that is against you. See: Sully, Rondo, Big Baby, Tony Allen, Al Jefferson, Delonte West, Ryan Gomes, Leon Powe, Semih Erden ... and this is just in Boston. Go back to his days in Orlando to see him starting rookie Mike Miller, who won Rookie of the Year under Doc.
