Game Notes
Celtics visit division leading Knicks with both teams in search of 3rd straight win.   Whenever these two teams get together there is always a playoff atmosphere,  even in the preseason.  They split the series last season with each team winning on their home court.  They also split a pair in the preseason this year.

The Knicks lead the Atlantic Division with the Celtics in 3rd, 7 games back.  The Celtics are still in the 8th spot in the East and are 2 games up on the Sixers who have dropped to 9th and half a game behind Milwaukee for the 7th spot.   The Knicks last won the division in 1993-94 but look to end the Celtics 5 year reign over the Atlantic this season.

The Knicks are a very good home team with a 13-3 record while the Celtics have struggled on the road with 6 wins and 11 losses.  The Celtics are 4-6 in their last 10 games and the Knicks are a slightly better 5-5 in their last 10.  Both have won 2 in a row and are looking for their 3rd straight win.  Both teams are coming off a come from behind win in their last game on Saturday.

The Celtics can once again get back to .500 with a win in this game.  There are rumors all over about Danny working on a blockbuster trade and that's always unsettling for players.  Hopefully it won't affect their play in this game as the Celtics need everyone to play well if they are going to come out on top in this one.

Key Matchups
(http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Garnett_Kevin_bos.jpg)  vs  (http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Chandler_Tyson_cha.jpg)
Kevin Garnett vs Tyson Chandler
This will be a battle between two tough defenders.  KG has been playing very well and has played with renewed energy and purpose in the past two games.  Chandler has been playing very well this season, averaging 12.8 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks per game.  This should be a fun matchup to watch.

(http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Pierce_Paul_bos_1112.jpg)  vs  (http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Anthony_Carmelo_nyk_11.jpg)
Paul Pierce vs Carmelo Anthony
This is a tough match up for both players but probably harder for Pierce given Melo's level of play this season.  Both have come up big for their teams in this matchup in the past.   Melo has averaged 30.8 points in their 4 meetings last season while Pierce averaged 35.7 points in 3 games that he played in.  Melo has been playing at an MVP level, coming off a 40 point game on Saturday and Pierce will have to up his game to stay with him.

(http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Rondo_Rajon_bos_1112.jpg)vs  (http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Kidd_Jason_NYK.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Jason Kidd
This will be an interesting matchup between the new guard in Rondo vs the old guard in Jason Kidd.  These two point guards didn't meet last year as each missed one game vs each other.  Kidd leads the league with 32 regular season triple doubles in his 19 seasons.   Rondo comes in third with 15 in his 7 seasons.   Rondo is another Celtic that gets up for the Knicks.  He averaged 17.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 13.3 assists in the 4 games last season.

Keys to the Game

Defense
- The Knicks have been playing good defense since Woodson took over as coach and the Celtics have shown in the past 2 games that they are still capable of locking teams down.  The Celtics have to make defense their priority in this game especially because the Knicks can be a very dangerous offensive team.   The Celtics must especially guard the perimeter as the Knicks are 3rd in the league in 3 point percentage at 38.8% and they aren't shy about shooting them.  But they also have to guard the paint because the Knicks have several players who can take it strong to the hoop as well.

Rebound
- The Celtics are still 30th in the league in rebounding with 38.6 per game.  The Knicks aren't much better, coming in at 27th with 39.94 per game.  That will change, though now that Amare is back and averaging over 10 rebounds per game.   The Celtics have got to crash the boards as a team and win the battle on the glass if they want to win this game.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics must be the more aggressive team.  They have to be aggressive in going to the hoop and not settle for jumpers, especially if the jumpers aren't falling.  They must be aggressive on the boards and in going after loose balls and winning the 50/50 plays.  The more aggressive team gets the calls from the officials and that will be important in this game.   We know that the Knicks will be aggressive and so the Celtics have to match that intensity.

Play 48 Minutes - The Celtics must get off to a good start and play hard for 48 minutes in this game.  They may have gotten away with playing 2 quarters against the Hawks, but the Knicks are too good to allow a similar comeback if the Celtics let themselves get down.

X-Factors
Team Effort and Officiating
If the Celtics play as a team like they did in the Pacers game and in the second half of the Hawks game, they stand a good chance of winning this.  If they play a disjointed game as they did in the first half of the Hawks game,  it could get very ugly.   In the  Knicks games I've watched this season, they got a lot of help from the officials.  Hopefully they call a fair game in this one.  It's hard to win playing 5 on 8.

That Knicks starting lineup is one mean defensive unit.

It's going to be hard for Boston to score while those guys are on the floor together. I think teams with two legit shot-blocking seven footers have been very effective at bothering Rondo's dribble penetration. Tyson can defend Garnett very well. Bradley is still a limited shot creator.

I think there will be a lot of pressure on Pierce to go head-to-head with Carmelo. Plus, they still have Ronnie Brewer to either throw onto Pierce or muck things up as a long athletic and active help defender.

Very tough defensive unit.

I think both team's starting lineups are going to be very effective in stopping one another. I'd expect a low scoring affair while they are in the game. Things should open when the bench players start coming in though.

Official Report

Tony Brothers

Tony Brothers is entering his 19th season as an NBA official and has officiated 1,093 regular season games and 61 playoff games during his career. Brothers made his first NBA Finals appearance during the 2011-12 season. He was a member of the crew that officiated the 1996 Mexico Challenge, 1998 Schick Rookie Game, 1999 McDonald’s Championship in Milan, Italy and the 2008 China Games. Prior to joining the NBA, Brothers spent four years officiating in the CBA, including three CBA Finals and a CBA All-Star Game. He has one year of collegiate officiating experience at the Junior College level. Brothers also has seven years of high school officiating experience in Virginia, including three state tournaments. As a way of honoring his late mother and to give back to his community, Brothers operates Sassy Properties, an organization dedicated to providing quality and affordable housing for disadvantaged families. He is also a board member of BillBro, an organization that provides scholarships for women and minorities. In 1994 he started a mentor program in the Tidewater, Va. schools.

There are several articles about what a terrible ref Brothers is and detailing his misdeeds. He has angered a lot of fans of just about every team because of bad calls, no calls, and one sided officiating. The Celtics are 1-1 this season with Brothers. He called a 115-85 win over the Nets in preseason and also the first regular season loss to the Nets. Brothers was responsible for calling Bogans' clothesline and choke job of Barbosa a regular foul. He also called a clean block a foul down the stretch which could have changed the outcome of the game. He most recently called the 1 point loss to Philly in OT. The Celtics are 4-6 in their last 10 games with Brothers on the court. The Knicks are 1-1 this season and 3-7 with Brothers in their last 10. His home W/L record this season is 16-10.

Dick Bavetta

Entering the 2012-13 NBA eason, Bavetta has officiated 2,546 consecutive regular season games and 259 playoff games, including 27 Finals games, never having missed an assigned game throughout his entire career. He was a member of the officiating crew that worked the 1989, 1995 and 2006 NBA All-Star Games, 1997 McDonald’s Championship in Paris, 1993 Mexico Challenge, 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and 1990 Japan Games in Tokyo. Prior to joining the NBA, Bavetta was an official with the Eastern League (CBA) for nine years, and he has also officiated in the Rucker League, FIBA, Jersey Shore Basketball League, as well as both the Public and Catholic High School leagues in New York City. Bavetta attended St. Francis College in Brooklyn. He is a member of the New York City Catholic High School Hall of Fame. He added to his personal honors when he received the National Pro-Am Lifetime Achievement Award and also was inducted into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame.

There is no shortage of controversy surrounding Bavetta. He was singled out in Tim Donaghy's book for being a "company man" and carrying out league agendas in games. Bavetta also likes to keep games close and will often make a lot of calls against a team that pulls out to a lead to keep the game more exciting. After watching a game where Bavetta has officiated, it's very easy to believe Donaghy's claims.

He was left off the playoff roster the last two seasons and there were rumors of a forced retirement but here he is back again for another season. In his off time, Bavetta doubles as the Crypt Keeper. The Celtics are 2-0 this season and 6-4 in their last 10 games with Bavetta on the court. One win this season was in OT over the Magic in which the teams were allowed to play and both teams took 19 free throws. The other was a 92-79 win over Philly where the Sixers took 16 free throws to 12 for the Celtics and the refs again let them play. The Knicks are 1-0 this season and 8-2 in their last 10 games with Bavetta. His home W/L record is 16-6.

Violet Palmer

Violet Palmer, one of the first two female officials in the NBA, has officiated 798 regular season games and has appeared in nine playoff games over the past 15 seasons. Before joining the NBA, Palmer officiated in the WNBA during the league’s inaugural season, including the 1997 WNBA Championship. She has two years of CBA officiating experience and nine years of collegiate officiating experience, including women’s games in the Pac-10, Western Athletic, West Coast, Big Sky, and Big West Conferences, as well as five NCAA Final Fours and two NCAA Championship games. Before becoming an official, Palmer was a successful basketball player both at the collegiate and high school levels. She was a four-year letter winner at Cal. Poly Pomona, where her team won the NCAA Division II Finals in 1985 and 1986. In addition, she was on the basketball team at Compton High School. Off the court, Palmer is a CCA Manual Mechanics committee member. She also is involved with the City of Los Angeles Youth Referee Clinic in her hometown of Los Angeles. Palmer also acts as a coordinator for both the West Coast Conference and the Pac-10 Conference.

At one time Violet was the worst ref in the league. In one game Cedric Maxwell was moved to urge her to go back into the kitchen because her calls were so bad. She has had Tommy close to exploding many times as well. She's improved a lot over the years and is no longer the worst ref in the league (that honor goes to Bennett Salvatore) but she's still not a very good ref. Although, after getting a hug from Pierce after he ran into her in a win over the Pacers last season, the Celtics took 20 more free throws than the Pacers. The Celtics are 0-2 this season and 6-4 over their last 10 games with Violet on the court. The Knicks are 1-0 this season and 5-5 over their last 10 with Violet. Her home W/L record this season is 16-6.

What do you guys peg our chances at winning this game? Not very good imo without Rondo attacking and drawing defenses in like he has these past few games we can't beat the elite teams...maybe Torronto or the Wizards we could survive w/ out bim but not the Knicks

I think this is the perfect game to start green.
starting the game the match ups would be
Kidd- bradley
Brewer-pierce
Melo-green
Camby-bass
Chandler- kg

Offensive is gonna be run by a mixture of players regardless of how we start.

Thanks for the post FLCeltsFan (TP).

No Rondo, but at least we have Bradley. He can be counted on to be a 30 min thorn in some NY Guard's side for this game.

Looking forward to The Captain pulling us through once again. He saved Rondo's butt last season with a big game when he was suspended, so I expect Paul to help clean up Rondo's room once again.

I think BOS can still pull this off tonight.

As much as I fear Melo going off, he's still not an elite defender. Paul should be able to get his and run the offense, I believe.

I also like our X-Factor:

Contain JR Smith, don't let Novak shoot, and defend the Chandler pick and rolls.  Pick up 3rd straight win.

This is why you don't trade Lee. Lee and Terry are very good together, but Bradley and Terry not so sure.

Terry and Rondo aren't that good together, Lee works well with Rondo...

Yet to see Lee and Bradley together, should be fun defensively.

Very impressive that we hung in there.  If JET doesn't contribute I don't see how we stay in this game.  Nice work by Lee, Sully, KG, Bass and Green (there'd be more kudos to Green if he finished his last layup).  Also, great D again by Avery, but his shot isn't there yet.  Pierce and JET need to light it up.

Collins will be fine with Chandler, he's in good shape this year plus understands the center position rotations better. Sully has a bad habit of over-helping as a center, and not recovering well, giving Chandler good positioning, which includes positioning for offensive rebounds.

Not really, was used as a primary ball handler.

Stretch means you double the remaining contract length to spread out the cap hit, and he is waived.

When Terry is on the floor, I agree.

But while Kidd is a good ball-handler, it's been shown time and time again that when Bradley pressures him like we know he can, Kidd can't do anything.

I'll take that all day still don't feel real good about pulling this one out. They have too much offense we need Rondos 15-20 points because I don't think it'll come from Terry.

KG neutralizing Chandler

Jeff green looked like he wanted nothing more than to pass the ball. Frustrating.

Assuming he's still a Celtic by the end of the season,  I'd really love it if Jeff worked on his ball-handling and off-the-dribble game this offseason. When he's being defended by guys like Steve Novak, there's no reason for him to not be getting to the rim.

Other than that, I've been happy with Jeff tonight.

Avery "most overrated player" Bradley is a gamer... give him a week and a half to get in game shape and wait for All-NBA Defensive First Team performance, plus efficient shooting.

Go Celtics!!!

Melo is fouling both KG and PP over and over again....

Everyone is fouling everyone over and over right now.  Refs are letting them play.  As long as they don't abruptly start calling ticky-tacks I'm fine with it.

I think the Knicks might be my favorite opponent to watch the Cs play.  Almost always intense, high-level ball.

Best game of the season. Bradley really is a game changer - the spark. Sully plays his heart out, and he can only get better. Pierce is the heart and soul of this team. Where would we be without him today? I love KG. He just kept bringing the intensity, and hit some clutch free throws.

Love it, love it, love it! Let's keep this streak going!

Haha...take THAT, NY and Spike Lee!

So, toss out those fluke of games with SAC and GSW, and BOS has beaten BKN, ATL, and NY - all on the road.

We've beaten Indy at home.

All four of these teams are probable playoff teams.

NBATV had NY listed as a contender - right up there with OKC, Clips, MIA and Spurs, I believe.

BOS is back.

Rondo owes Paul Pierce, Jeff Green, KG, AB, Sully - etc - STEAK DINNERS, lol...

Paul Pierce cleaned Rondo's Room once again....pick up after yourself, Rondo! ;D

GREAT GAME, C's!!! LOVE IT!

This is one of the best matchups in the NBA right now. Both teams like the intensity, Pierce vs. Melo and KG vs Chandler are almost always fun to watch.

Love Sullinger and Bradley. I liked how Lee performed in a playoff like game. Huge credit to Jeff Green, too.

Knicks fans must hate the Captain almost as much as they hated Miller.

Great win tonight, no doubt about it.

KG completely owned Melo mentally the entire second half. He looked like he was ready to cry for a good half am hour.

The Knicks postgame show guys said Melo needed to be restrained in the back trying to get into the Celtics locker room.

Definitely looking forward to their next meeting!

Rondo owes Paul Pierce, Jeff Green, KG, AB, Sully - etc - STEAK DINNERS, lol...

Only owes that to Bradley I think, because before Bradley came back we had just lost 3 games by an average of 30 points and were walking into one of the toughest stretch of games in the season.

Then Bradley returns and we won 3 of 4 of those games, and we won them all with defense.

But of course 'apparently' Bradley isn't that important to our team!  ::)

You didn't hear him?

I don't remember the exact words but he was telling KG "he's going to see him after the game" it was when KG threw a elbow clearing space which Melo does all the time and is good at doing. It was a physical game everybody was pushing and swinging their elbows. He was just mad he was getting his backside kicked. It ended up working to our advantage that was vintage Celtics basketball right there. ::) ;D

nobody said AB was not a huge factor. but he will not make a difference as far as us being a REAL CONTENDER.....we still need a guy to rim protect when KG is out. wilcox and collins are not those guys i am not afraid to say.

Honestly, what more does ABradley need to do show how critical he is to this teams title hopes?

When Bradley took over from Ray last season our team turned from being barely a playoff team to being a serious contender.  We didn't add any key bigs in the process.

This season we couldn't put together a three game stretch of playing "Celtics basketball" until convenietly one game after Bradley's return - we didn't pick up any new bigs over this stretch, the only change we made in that regard was moving Collins to the bench so we have a proper big to back up KG.

I don't know how much of it is about his physical play, his mental boost and his impact on the roster (i.e. ability to move Terry to the bench) but ever since the 4th quarter of his first game back the body language of the entire team has changed.
Suddenly we have gone from a team who looks lazy and disintersted, to a team that is looks focussed and emotional.  Guys like Green, Terry and Collins (formerly invisible) are now playing lock-down defense.  We're more physical - teams are getting frustrated playing against usagainst us, games are getting chippy and our guys are refusing to back down.  Finally we are showing signs of Celtic effect, which has opposing teams dreading the thought of playing us because they know that even if they win, they aren't coming out of it without a few bumps and bruises.

I can't tell you what individual aspect changed this (it's probably a combination of them all) but over this three game stretch we are playing 'championship contender' basketball, and we have not played that at all this entire season up to this point.  I find it very hard to believe that this is pure coincidence and that our guys just happened to wake up one game after Bradley returns. If you look at the impact he had last season, that's too much coincidence.

The scrappy physical Celtics basketball is back they prob feel like they got punched in the mouth  ;D

Quote
NEW YORK -- New York Knicks sixth man J.R. Smith needed 11 stitches to patch up a deep cut over his right eye, suffered during the Boston Celtics' 102-96 win over the New York Knicks on Monday night.

The incident happened with 1:08 remaining in the fourth quarter, when Smith and Celtics shooting guard Avery Bradley got tangled up during a loose ball situation, and Bradley fouled Smith. The Knicks' medical staff treated Smith on the sideline by putting a bandage on the wound, and then a headband over that to keep it in place.

"It was definitely inadvertent," said Smith of Bradley's foul. "That's just the way he plays. He plays very aggressive defense and I like to play aggressive basketball, so it was fine."

"In three games this season coming into the game against the Knicks, Boston has starved opposing offenses when Bradley is on the court, allowing just 86.5 points per 100 possessions. How good is that? Indiana has the best defensive rating in the NBA this season at 98.9 points per 100 possessions. "

Garnett played a team high 38 minutes tonight.  He's also been playing longer stretches recently since the lost to Sacramento.

I really liked how Doc distributed the minutes tonight.  Even though the Celtics held up surprisingly well and more when neither Pierce and KG were on the court, to go with Rondo being suspended, I'm glad he pushed KG a bit harder because that's the way circumstances broke with Pierce in foul trouble and Rondo being out.  KG didn't look worse for wear.

So I'm watching the game on comcast now.

What the freaking hell.  This games refereeing was a complete joke.  I saw a pick by chandler where he didn't even try to sell it as legal he EXTENDS HIS ARMS AND PUSHES THE GUY AWAY.

Then don't even need to talk about Melo.  Guy punches Terry in the face during a pushoff and no call.  Pierce on the other end fights Carmelo for position and they foul him out of the quarter 3 minutes into the 3rd.

What a freaking joke the refing was.

Anyways, it goes without saying that the Knicks offense s all about shooting 3s and without that they are completely worthless.  First half they were hot and were winning.  then second half they went cold and look what happens.  I can't wait for them to go one and done.  Frauds.

Green had a matchup and took advantage.  Also did a nice job on Carmelo from what I've seen so far.  Nicely done.

Bradley started slow on offense but came around.  Bradley is a franchise player.  We can not trade this guy unless we're getting a legit superstar like Howard/LBJ etc. and for obvious reasons those guys aren't happening.  Bradley and Rondo are our future.  Find a big man somehow, someway but Rondo/Bradley are our future and can not be touched.

Pierce is the truth

KG is the big ticket and if we win a championship it's on his back that it happens.

Chandler deliberately pushes off on a pick again to spring Lee's man free.  What a freaking joke.

Though I will say the charge Sully got called in his favor was very generous.

Sully has played well and Lee has been playing well.

I know everyone wants a big splash, but really, these guys are clealry starting to jell and get into a groove.  The defense is miles better than the beginning of the year, largely thanks to Bradley.  This team has plenty of talent to win.  It just needs time.  My faith has faltered during that horrific 20 point per game loss road trip, but before that I had said all season they just need time to jell and Bradley back.

Give Terry less minutes and Bradley more and surprise! defense is way better!  Who would have thought.

The team has been playing better as of late. I wonder if it is just AB or the team is happy to be back at playing as a complete roster and gives more energy. Whatever the answer is, we are sharper in the defensive end now.
Now, if we keep playing well enough (by enough, I mean, you really can bring yourself to accept a loss, if the team gives its 100% every night and it doesn't work), there may not be a major move happening. Even if there is going to be one, it's better to head in that direction with a good mood and not with desperation.

Now, in just four nights, Boston has beaten three of the East's top four teams. Far from the aging, toothless squad we saw in the season's first couple months, more and more Boston looks like the team many predicted it would be, one capable of another deep run into the Eastern Conference playoffs.

On my ride into work this morning i had the NY sports station on (WFAN) they had multiple callers call in and talk about ... "Doc's dirty team play" how "Felton would have won the game if he was there" How the hell are they so nieve to say that when THE BEST POINT GUARD IN THE LEAGUE WASN'T PLAYING. Rondo>Felton. And they were also applauding melo for "sticking it to KG and waiting outside the locker room putting him in his place"
Wait wait wait, did i miss something? He put him in his place? We came in, bullied them and walked away with a win and left classy. No nonsense.

I guess there is a new stat in basketball scores i didn't know about. The knicks are now 23 wins, 11 losses and 1 "morale tough guy victory".

Garnet has to play big minutes against good teams if the C's are going to win. ...at least until another BIG who can provide some stabilitiy in the paint. We have too many small forwards and not enough big guys with a game in the paint. Basically we have Sully...KG really don't play offense in paint. One is not enought.

KG is the only effective big we have to match up with teams going small. 4 perimeter players and Bass/Sullinger/etc. doesn't work for the C's.

KG really don't play offense in paint. One is not enought.
I saw him repeatedly post up Chandler and Melo all night. I guess since he usually takes a turnaround out of his post ups you don't consider that as playing in the paint on offense?

There was a lot of "let them play" no-calls in the second half. Some of them I wasn't particularly fond of (the terry /melo elbow stands out the most on the morning after) but this game stands as probably my favorite game I've caught this season. Not quite the 90's, but definitely a lot more physical and trash-talky than what you normally see in the NBA. I loved it.

Of course, that W at the end was great too. ;D

Last 3 games were great, but it wasn't more than a week ago that this blog was all but counting them done.

I'd really like to see the C's do this for another 8 games before I start to get that same 'lightswitch' feeling I had last season.

If they go 4-1 or better on the homestand I'll start getting really excited. But that's about it.

Houston is really the only team that could give us much trouble, so I see 4-1 as very possible.

EDIT: And Chicago, too. But still.

The sad thing with this whole dust-up with Melo and KG is that these two will probably be teammates/starters on the All-Star team.

I'd hate for a cloud to be hanging over them. I'm tired of Kobe and the West winning the All-Star Game over the last few yrs.

We already have LeBron and probably Wade and the rivalry there...now toss in Melo.

I think that a lineup of KG-LeBron-Melo-Wade-Rondo could beat the West, but now add this Melo-KG mess and Chemistry could go out the door very quick.

That's a pretty classy response by Smith. Count me impressed.

Smith was the most mature knicks player on the court. I was dumbfounded.
