Celtics Assistant Coach Armond Hill played for the Hawks from 1976-80 and also during the 1983-84 season
Hawks Assistant Coach Lester Conner was an Assistant Coach with the Celtics from 1998-2004

Key Matchups
(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/BassBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/atlanta/JSmithAtl.jpg)
Brandon Bass vs Josh Smith
Smith is a very athletic and quick power forward and  Brandon must box out and keep Smith off the boards along with slowing him down on offense.  Smith is an average defender, though and so Bass should be able to get his shot off.  Smith is averaging 16.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game so Bass will need to be aggressive on defense to keep Smith from having a big game.

(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/RondoBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/atlanta/TeagueAtl.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Jeff Teague
Teague is a good point guard and is averaging 13.2 points and 6.7 assists per game.  Both are quick and both see the court well and so this should be a fun matchup to watch.  Rondo played aggressively on both ends of the court against the Pacers.  Hopefully he brings that same aggression to this game.

Honorable Mention
Kevin Garnett vs Al Horford
With KG's move back to center, he will be matched up with Al Horford.  is playing very well, averaging 16.0 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.  KG played a very aggressive and physical game against the Pacers and hopefully he will have enough in the tank to do the same vs Horford.

Game Notes

The Celtics travel to Atlanta to take on the Hawks in the first of 4 meetings this season.   The Celtics are coming off an impressive win over the Pacers at home while the Hawks are coming off an 85-84 loss to Detroit at home.  Both teams are playing in the second of back to back games.  The Hawks are a league best 7-1 in back to back games.  The Celtics.... not so much.

Boston won the series 2-1 last season but all 3 games were close.  The Celtics won by 3 points and by 2 points in overtime while the Hawks won their game by 5.  Every game between these two teams seems to end up being chippy.  There is no love lost between them, that is for sure.

Some of the faces have changed since last season.  Joe Johnson is no longer there to catch on fire in the 4th quarter.  Jason Collins was their starting center when the Celtics last played them in the regular season.   The Celtics finally have their starting 5 back from last year and they looked good in the Pacers game but consistency has been a problem for them all year long.

The Hawks are a good road team with an 11-5 record at Phillips Arena.  The Celtics have been the opposite on the road with a 5-11 record away from the Garden.  The Celtics are now 3-7 in their last 10 games while the Hawks are 6-4 in their last 10.

The Celtics are back into 8th in the East (3rd in the Atlantic), one game ahead of the Sixers who lost last night.  Atlanta is 3rd in the East (2nd in the Southeast), 2 games behind Miami at the top.

The Celtics showed that they are capable of playing tough defense from start to finish and playing a solid offensive game as well.  The big question is whether or not they can find some consistency and do it again in the next game.  They will need to if they want to beat this tough Atlanta team at home.

Keys to the Game

Defense -  Defense is key to every win.  The Celtics need to play tough team defense.  We saw that the Celtics are capable of playing that type of defense in the Pacers game but can they do it 2 nights in a row?   They have to guard the perimeter as the Hawks have good 3 point shooters who can kill a team from out there.   They also have to defend the paint because players like Smith, Horford and Pachulia can get to the hoop and score there, especially on tip ins.

Rebound - The Celtics must make an effort to go after rebounds.  They must box out and prevent tip ins and to prevent the Hawks from getting second chance baskets.  The Hawks are a good rebounding team, but not great as they rank 23rd in the league in that category.  The Celtics showed against the Pacers, who are a great rebounding team, that when they put out the effort,  they can hold their own on the boards.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics must be the more aggressive team.  They have to go after rebounds and loose balls.  They must be aggressive in going to the basket and not settle for jumpers.  They also have to be aggressive on defense and get stops. We saw all of this in the Pacers game.  Hopefully they will bring it again in this game.

Bench Play - The Celtics got 39 points from their bench in their win over the Pacers.  Lee and Barbosa shot the ball very well. Terry and Green still struggled with their shot and hopefully they can snap out of their slumps just as Lee seems to have done.   Sully was just 2-7 but he got to the line for 6 free throws.  He was once again aggressive on the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds and that is important.  The Celtics need production from their bench because the starters can't do it alone.

X-Factor
Back to Back on the Road
Both teams are playing in back to back games.  The Hawks are a younger team and were at home for both games while the Celtics needed to travel after their win.  Can the Celtics bring the same intensity two games in a row?

I am glad that (1) Avery Bradley back to defend Lou Williams who is a very explosive scorer off the dribble for Atlanta, and, (2) Doc has gone back to Garnett at center alongside Bass who matchup so much better with Horford and J.Smith than the old slow Collins-Garnett combo.

Paul Pierce is going to be able to beat the crap out of Kyle Korver.

No way Korver can cover Pierce. I am expecting a big game from Pierce. Atlanta have nobody on their bench, no wing with size and defensive ability, who can cover Jeff Green either so J.Green should have a big impact too.

my worry is that bass will not be able to defend smith well. i think that doc will play green against smith for quite a few minutes.

plus, the celtics bench of sully and green should be able to score and rebound against the hawks bench.

tp for the thread and....

go celtics!!!  :D

The Celtics REALLY REALLY REALLY need this game...  to get back to 500 ball  and to instill confidence they righting the ship.

I need it as fan... ;)

More effort from Green and Bass and another decent nice effort like last night from Lee and the C's might make a good showing.

I guess we'll see if Sully and Collins can put some sort of clamp on Horford and not let him run wild.

Have to Hope Smith is having an OFF night.  :-X

BTW...Just got a suspecious feeling KG is gonna be more reved-up than normal.   ;)

I'm glad to have another game to watch tonight especially with Football season winding down.  This game is gonna be won in the trenches.  We're gonna have to out rebound and open up space on the floor to beat these guys tonight.  I look for a layoff, but I'm hoping the win last night was a spark.  Prediction:  I look for bass to have a big night.

2013 predictions:  1-0 ;D

Let's go Celtics!

Even though he's undersized, I love Lou Williams at the 2.  The guy is a flat-out scorer, and I think it creates mis-matches for opposition.  Do we want Bradley pressuring Teague up the floor, or do we want him on Atlanta's best shot creator?  Tough decision.

I like Bradley on Teague. Make them take longer to get into their offense. Fewer seconds on the shot clock really helps our D.

The Hawks have been playing lights out this year. I've been home for the holidays. That allows me to watch all of the Hawks games being as they run for this region. They won't lie down for the C's anymore and could easily take this game. Color me worried as ****.

Both players are capable ball handlers.  I suspect whoever is being guarded by Bradley, the other will handle the ball.  Tegaue is a little quicker.

I agree that Williams is a capable ball handler, but Teague has a far better handle. Taking the ball out of Teague's hands relegates Teague to a 2 guard, which is definitely not his strength and Williams becomes the distributor, which isn't his strength.

Hope that this is how it goes down.

Tonight's game is a huge test for the C's: second game of a back-to-back, away from home, against a top team in the East. If we win this or at least stay competitive until the very end, it means we're starting to get some things right and last night's performance was no fluke.

I've watched the Hawks this season and they're a completely different team than last season. Very talented offensively, they move the ball well and when they get hot, it's hard to stop them (the departure of ball-stopper Joe Johnson has really helped them). They're coming off a bad loss to the Pistons so they're gonna be extra motivated for tonight's game.

TP for the thread! I'm really curious to see if this team has finally turned the corner... cause it's about darn time and last time I thought that was the case (Christmas Day win against the Nets), I was dead wrong...

It was ridiculous how deep Pierce was in the paint on that catch on Korver. Pierce is going to roast Korver tonight.

The Al Horford versus Kevin Garnett is a terrific one. Best matchup of the night. Two guys who play similar roles for their respective teams. Garnett just does it better. That said, I think Horford will neutralize Garnett tonight.

If Josh Smith is going to defend KG on the other end, I'd like to see Garnett post him up. KG has always had a lot of success posting up Josh Smith.

Nothing in the post. Nothing even in the midrange. Just working the ball side to side 20-25 feet from the basket. Terrible offense.

Just noticed something brutal about the Celtics defense. They help out way too much instead of just playing man to man. This Help defense worked a few year back but its very old now. More teams have caught on & we also have gotten older & slower trying to help  then get back. Look how Rondo & Pierce are getting buried 2nite so far. It happens in all of our games especially when a team has good shooters.

We got lucky last night playing a bad shooting team that missed a lot of good open shots. This won't happen on most nights. No wonder we got killed on the west coast road trip. I haven't watched those games yet, the boxscore alone from my phone turned me off.

Bad first quarter but they have kept the deficit to 11.

Now just chip away at it and try to go in even or close to even at the half. Atlanta had a brilliant start with their hot-shooting but it won't last. Atlanta will weaken. Boston will get stronger as the game goes on if they stick at it.

We have ourselves an optimist.

If we're supposed to be happy about being down only 11 after 12 minutes... well, that's pretty pathetic.

There's about a 5% chance they come back to make a game of it, and 95% chance they lose by 15+.

Tough to defend Atlanta's quickness and dribble penetration from the backcourt with two big wings.

Atlanta couldn't defend Boston's size on the wings either. I wonder who would control the tempo better. I think it would be Atlanta. So much quickness throughout their lineup.

By the way, this is the Celtics M.O. this season - one step forward, two steps back.

We have to stop misreading that "one step forward" as actual progress.

This team stinks.  They need to be re-shuffled.  Trades need to happen.  Ainge's patience is only going to last until JANUARY 15th, when he can finally trade everyone who doesn't have a no-trade clause.

Gotta come out with a lot of intensity after half-time.

Can't let Atlanta hang onto this double digit lead heading into the fourth. Need to get them to single digits earlier. Pile on the pressure.

If Boston makes a run, it'll be because of their defensive intensity. Forcing misses. Forcing turnovers. Getting some easy baskets.

Lucky Pierce made that bucket, because Bradley screwed up the floor balance by going for the offensive rebound... it would've lead for an easy Atlanta basket.

Bass is butter fingers, Rondo should know who he's passing it to... you don't give him a difficult pass in that situation.

Apathetic play with the exception of the last 5min. Rondo needs to some leadership and play with some intensity.

I hope Teague and Lou are giving him a lesson of what it means to play with speed.

Rondo's quickness has to be his most overrated asset.

Not at the moment, it's just a recollection of I think during a playoff series, and I think it was a bit in response to Doc always telling him to run, run, and that he needs to push himself to do it, that it doesn't come natural to him. I think there was a portion about his mood playing into it, about over thinking, or getting down on his mistakes which made it difficult to run at times, etc.

Would be cool if I can find it again, but it was some years back.

Wow!

That quarter highlighted so much:

1) How good the Celtics can be when they put forth effort and they execute well.

2) Pierce is a flat-out HOF-er.

3) Why the Hawks cannot truly contend for a championship.  Too many 3's and long jumpers.  The Celtics sometimes suffer from this same issue.

4) Josh Smith's weaknesses, and why I've never really wanted him on the C's.  I mean, I'd take him straight up for Bass or Green, but I wouldn't base our future around him and Rondo.  His effort fluctuates and he too often settles for loooong jumpers when his natural athleticism can get him to the rim every time.

5) I love Sully more every game.

Terrific offensive rebound by Sullinger. Just muscled Smith in below the rim for the position.

Rondo saw him running up and decided to take the jumper because he knew Sully was going to be in rebounding position if he missed. A 2 for 1 opportunity. Very good job reading the play by Rondo.

yeah, atlanta has a lot of talented players, but they aren't playing to their strengths.  Al H, and Josh Smith have been chucking up 18 footers instead of attacking the rim.  I think that is a huge mistake.  It is bad when we do that, but we are old and slow.  They are young and can jump out of the gym, no reason to take bad jump shots.

UH-OH!

Let's not forget the Celtics are one of the worst teams at closing out quarters.

They also tend to let up after getting the lead or playing great bball.

This may be the perfect storm for a really gut-wrenching loss.

I don't think ego has anything to do with it.  It's more of him finding a role on the team and executing it with confidence so that the team benefits overall.  I understand he hasn't particularly earned his minutes in the past few games, but finding that role is hard to do when you're playing 15 minutes a night.

Green -- missing in action tonight.  bonehead move on that dunk turned goaltend
PP still capable of putting together an amazingly hot quarter.

Worked tonight......key to their D.....ball pressure.

Me too. Other than the obvious adjustments he made at the half (and maybe some heated talk in the locker room... :P), he left PP out there with 4 fouls early in the 3rd and, boy, was that a game changing choice!!

I don't think I want Josh Smith in Boston. Love the guys we have now.

Rondo played a lot harder and consequently better on defense after KG took him aside and privately said whatever he said.  My guess is that it had to do with defense because the effort Rondo put forth in guarding anyone for much of the first half made it seem like the Celtics were defending with 4 players.  The second half was a complete turnaround.  I love the second half version of Rondo, the one who plays with energy and decisiveness on both sides of the court.

Much to my surprise, Bass also had a strong overall game, on both ends.  It's weird that I'm surprised whenever his jumper goes in now.

Completely missed the game.  >:(

Heard Rondo messed arouns though. Another win. Confidence is getting back and here's hoping it piles up more wins.

Heard Isaiah Thomas talk about Green and how he's a sleeper and needs to wake up offensively. Cant believe im agreeing with him.

CELTICS!

Josh Smith didn't look into the game all that much to me.    I'd still swap Green for Smith ....gee ..I'm such as nice guy .. ;D

I love hearing this from Lou Williams our defense is back guys  8)

Quote
"Defensively, I think they just did a great job of making it tough for us to catch," said Williams, who finished with a game-high 28 points. "They were pressuring everything. They made it tough for Jeff (Teague) to get us into plays. They made it tough for us to get it in on inbounds plays. You know, but that's been their makeup for a number of years. They've always been a defensive-minded team and tonight we got the worst of it."
