Pacers Associate Head Coach Brian Shaw was drafted by the Celtics with the 24th pick in the 1988 NBA Draft and played for the Celtics during the 1988-89 season and from 1990-92
Leandro Barbosa played for the Pacers during the 2011-12 season.

Game Notes
The Celtics host Gerald Green and the Pacers as they look to get back on track and snap a 4 game losing streak.  This is the first of 3 meetings between these two teams this season.  They will meet once more in March and once in April.  Last season both teams won 2 games, with the Celtics winning their last two meetings.

These two teams have been going in opposite directions.  The Pacers have been playing very well and have won 2 in a row and 8 of their last 10 games.  They are 1st in the Central division and 4th in the East.  On the other hand, the Celtics have lost 4 in a row and have won just 2 of their last 10 games.  They have slipped to 4th in the Atlantic, just 2.5 games ahead of the Raptors.  They have also slipped out of the playoff race, just behind the Sixers who are in the 8th spot.

Danny said in an interview that Doc is going to shake things up and that with Avery back, we now have the lineup from last season that played so well together.  I originally went with Collins at center, which is posted int he game notes.  But after reading Danny's comment, I'm thinking we may see Brandon back at PF and KG moving back to center for this game.  I like it.  Hopefully Doc will too.

The Celtics are 9-6 at home, in spite of the loss to the Grizzlies there in their last game.  The Pacers have struggled somewhat on the road with just an 8-10 record away from Bankers Life Fieldhouse.   The Celtics have got to find a way to get back on track and hopefully this will be the game that they figure it.  Otherwise, they will have their 5th straight loss and a lot of panicking fans.

Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/media/act_brandon_bass.jpg)vs(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/media/act_david_west.jpg)
Brandon Bass vs David West
As with the Grizzlies, the Pacers are strong where the Celtics are thin.  West and Hibbert are a formidable frontcourt duo with West averaging 17.8 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game and Hibbert adding 9.6 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.7 blocks.  Danny hinted that Doc may shake things up and return to the starting lineup that brought the Celtics success last season.  We stand a better chance with Brandon on West and KG on Hibbert.

Rajon Rondo vs DJ Augustin
Rondo should have the upper hand in this matchup.   Augustin averages 4.2 points, 2.6 assists and 1.0 rebounds.  Rondo is still feeling the effects of the hip injury but hopefully he will be aggressive in this one.

Honorable Mention
Paul Pierce vs Paul George
Pierce's normal adversary, Danny Granger, is out with a knee injury but things don't get any easier for the Captain with Paul George in his place.  George is playing very well and averaging 16.9 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists.  Pierce will need to work on both ends of the court in this game.

Keys to the Game
Defense - The Celtics have shown in spurts that they are still capable of playing tough defense but, often, as in the Grizzlies game, when they play good offense, their defense is terrible and when they play good defense, their offense disappears.  They must find a way to play aggressive, in your face defense for 48 minutes.  Until they do, the team will continue to struggle.  Having Bradley back will help, but every player has to commit to playing tough team defense.

Rebound -  Winning the rebounding battle prevents second chance points  and tip ins for the Pacers as well as limits fast break opportunities.  The Pacers are 5th in the league with 45.5 rpg.  The Celtics must put out extra effort to keep the Pacers off the boards as they are very good at getting tip ins and 2nd chance points.   Without a lot of height, the Celtics must gang rebound with everyone putting out extra effort.   When the Celtics put out the effort on the boards, it often translates to other areas of the game as well.

Ball Movement -  There have been times when the Celtics' ball movement is a joy to behold.  Then there are other times when you just scratch your head and wonder what they are doing.   They can't lapse into playing one on one and playing hero ball and expect to win the game.  They also can't get sloppy and make unforced turnovers.  They need to run more and try to get easy baskets instead of walking the ball up and letting the defense get set before they set up a shot.

Be Aggressive
-  The Celtics need to bring some hustle and effort to the game.  They have to go after loose balls and chase down rebounds.  Too many times we see Celtics standing around while the other team out hustles them for the ball.   They also have got to get into the paint more instead of settling for jumpers that aren't falling.

X-Factors
Celtics Pride
The Celtics have lost 4 in a row and have struggled to find any consistency.   They have to pull together as a team and find a way to fix the problems that have been plaguing them.  It will take effort from every player on the team to fill their roles and bring out that pride in playing well as a team.

Hibbert's interior help defense is going to be a large problem for the Celtics offense if Jason Collins continues to start. Hibbert will be able to ignore Collins completely and roam defensively around the paint. Effectively able to shut off any of the C's forays to the basket.

Doc needs to get Collins out of the way. Stop hurting his own team.

I think I would buy it to.  I am always intrigued by how many different celtic items that show up in the top of the game threads.

Great job on the game threads, btw.  They are always a fun read.

Hill is listed as day to day with a groin injury.  They've been using Augustin to start the two games while he has been out.  Hill may or may not be back for this game, but they are listing Augustin as the PG in their game notes.

Fl does an amazing job here on CB.  Way better than what we see from the mainstream media for these game set ups.

First TA comes into the garden this week, and now Gerald Green. Maybe Orien Greene can get signed from the D league for the Hawks tomorrow.

Hibbert is having a typical "I just signed my first mega-deal and I'm a big man" year. he's shooting only 40%  after shooting 50% last season, and he's leading the league in personal fouls.  9.6 points per game on 10.2 shots?  Come on.  When you're 7'2", you should be able to convert more than 47% of your shots right at the rim and 38% of your layups.

Gerald Green is having a lousy year after getting his 3/$10m deal. After an impressive 31 game run with the lowly Nets last season, 12.9 ppg in only 25 minutes, shooting 48/39/75% (also known as Jeff Green numbers if he wasn't an inconsistent wimp), Green has fell back to earth now that he's not putting up empty stats for a garbage team. 7.4 ppg in 21.7 minutes shooting 38 and 35%.  No, Indy, you can't get a refund.

Hibbert is a mess, KG will make him even more of a mess.

I want that chair BTW.

what bothers me about Indy is that I look at their roster, see that on a pure-talent basis it's very inferior to our roster but yet they have a much better record than us and are currently playing pretty well.

That's just wrong on so many levels

We should bounce back and win this one, probably in a slug fest low scoring affair....but that's on paper.

I think it will be a high scoring affair just to go against the grain....

Official Report

James Capers

The son of former NBA official James Capers Sr., James Capers has officiated 1,015 regular season games and 54 playoff games during his 17-season NBA career. Capers made his first NBA Finals appearance during the 2011-12 season. In addition to his NBA experience, Capers has six years of CBA officiating experience, including three CBA Finals and two CBA All-Star Games. The community-conscious Capers was the recipient of the 1998 Monarch Award as Chicago Sportsman of the Year for his career and community achievements.Capers also conducts NBA Read to Achieve programs at two Chicago Public schools. He has also volunteered to train referees for the Philippines basketball association.

I've seen several posts from Lakers fans who swear he hates the Lakers. At least he has that in his favor. The Celtics last saw Capers in game 2 of the ECF last season. The officiating was terrible in that game. The Heat shot 47 free throws to 29 for the Celtics. Pierce, Dooling and Pietrus all fouled out. There were bad calls and missed calls throughout the game. Lebron James took 24 free throws himself, only 4 less than the entire Celtics team. The Celtics are 6-4 over their last 10 games with Capers and 0-1 this season. The loss this season was the Nets game that resulted in a brawl. Capers gave Doc a T for yelling to Rondo. They let the Ntes get away with pushing and shoving and hard fouls the entire first half. The Nets shot 17 free throws to 5 for the Celtics in the first half and 3 of those free throws were on technicals. They did better in the second half after the brawl, but the refs' failure to call the game evenly in the first half led to the fight. The Pacers are 1-1 this season and 6-4 over their last 10 games. His home W/L record this season is 20-7.

Courtney Kirkland

Over the past 12 seasons, Courtney Kirkland has officiated 725 regular season games and 11 playoff games. He also officiated two seasons in the WNBA, including the 2000 WNBA Championship and the 1999 Conference Finals. Kirkland also officiated the 2010 and 2011 Venezuelan LPB basketball championships. Prior to joining the NBA, Kirkland also worked three seasons in the CBA where he officiated the 1999 and 2000 CBA Finals as well as the 2000 CBA All-Star Game. He was a high school official for four years as a member of the Baton Rouge (La.) Basketball Officials Association and was named Rookie Official of the Year in 1994. Kirkland earned a degree in Computer Science from Southern University. He was a member of the Northwestern High School basketball team that made it to the state semifinals in 1991 and 1992. Kirkland received the school’s Academic award, and led the team in assists, free throw and three-point shooting percentage.

Kirkland earned some measure of notoriety when he jumped in to block a Kris Humphries free throw in a recent Nets game. The Celtics are 2-0 this season and 10-0 in their last 10 games that Kirkland officiated. He officiated 2 Celtics games last season and both were called evenly as were the two he called this season. The Pacers are 2-1 this season and 7-3 in their last 10 games with Kirkland. His home W/L record this season is 14-13.

Marat Kogut

Marat Kogut enters his fourth year as an NBA Referee having officiated 163 games. Kogut immigrated to the United States with his family seven days after he was born. Raised in Brooklyn, NY, he started officiating at the age of 16 at local recreational youth leagues. His professional experience includes three years in the WNBA, as well as 4 years in the NBA Development League, where he officiated over 180 games, including the Finals in his last two seasons and the 2009 D-League All-Star Game in Phoenix. Prior to joining the NBA officiating staff, Kogut worked in several Men's NCAA mid-major Division I conferences, including the Ohio Valley Conference, Atlantic Sun, and Big South Conference, as well as in New York metro area High School basketball for four years. Kogut was the Head Men's Basketball Manager for the St. John's Redstorm.

The Celtics 5-5 in the last 10 games with Kogut calling the them. In one loss last season to the Lakers that Kogut called, the officiating was terrible and LA shot 20 free throws to 5 (yes, FIVE) for the Celtics. The Pacers are 2-0 this season and 7-3 in their last 10 games with Kogut as a ref. His home W/L record this season is 10-7.

Key guy tonight is Paul George - the dude can play.

What I found interesting the other night against Memphis is that they're strength is their bigs (Gasol and Randolph) - YET, their guards handled us (Conley and Allen).  The Pacers have a similar type of team in make-up, so I'll be curious to see Vogel's plan of attack.  Hibbert is not living up to the contract he signed, having a down year.  If I recall, his shooting percentage this year is atrocious.  This is a winnable game, so we'll see if Doc gets it figured out tonight.

If Hibbert is forced to guard Garnett 15 feet from the basket, Indiana will have nowhere near the league's best defense. Hibbert's defensive range is too limited. Players like KG cause him a world of trouble.

Plus, George Hill is likely out injured (one of the best defensive PGs in the league) and will be replaced by DJ Augustin (one of the worst defensive PGs). Another large drop-off for Indiana's defense.

Probably more like middle of the pack defensively. Maybe even a bit below average. Considering the circumstances.

Now if Jason Collins continues to start ... then Indiana's defense will still be in high order. And it'll be Doc's fault. So let's see what Doc does. Don't screw over your own team again tonight. Please !

It does.

When I saw that this was the lineup I thought about the run last year, then randomly thought about that quote Doc had about the Rondo, Ray, Pierce, KG, Perk starting 5 never losing a playoff series.

I like Jason Collins coming in to defend Hibbert.

Hibbert isn't much of an offensive threat against guys with legitimate size but he can destroy an undersized power forwards if they are on him. I don't think either Sully or Bass are capable of defending Hibbert.

So Collins is needed for a few minutes tonight while KG is resting + while Hibbert remains on the floor. When Mahinmi comes on, Doc can use Sully at center.

Is it really any wonder why our offense sucks?  Ball just doesn't move.

All I've seen so far are:

-One and dones: One pass from Rondo leading to a jumpshot, often contested.
-Individual playmaking: Someone puts the ball on the floor (AB and PP) and takes the shot without passing.
-Rondo dribbling down the clock without being aggressive.

I don't think the ball has switched sides on the court yet tonight.

I love Garnett.  Yes the defense, spacing, post game etc. are all nice, but the guys intangibles are just off the wall.  Exactly the kind of player you want to have on your team even if he's a scrub talent wise.

Also what goes unsaid is his maturity growth even the past few years.  You never see him get into fights anymore.  He's always the one breaking up fights and the only technical i can remember him getting in a long time was acompletely bogus one where he was hit and ripped the ball away from a defender and got an elbow T.

I'd like to see them keep this thing around 15pts.

This could drop to single digits very easily. Not a comfortable lead yet. There is way too much time left. I hope they don't drop their energy levels. Get too comfortable.

Agreed, but you do have to take into consideration how bad the Pacers offense is. Still, pretty impressive D.

Very true, but the rotations have been crisp and I can see the effort.  We can turn this season around if this effort remains consistent.

I am still shocked the Pacers didn't make a run at Steve Nash last year. He would have been brilliant for that team. Brought all the pieces together. Granger, West, George and Hibbert. Made them a major threat in the East.

A trade of Darren Collison and draft picks would've beaten out any other offers Phoenix were getting at the time and would've been attractive enough for Phoenix to pull the trigger.

Talk about an offense that is crying out for a playmaking PG

I'd like to point out that Doc is not forcing the same rotations, at least not as much.

Terry is 1-6, and only played 6 minutes. Sullinger has been playing well with almost 18 minutes. Collins went in and strategically matched up against Hibbert while KG was resting.

Also, the Bench has plus/minuses of +15, +11, +12, +0, and +3.

The defense looks better for a couple reasons.

1.  It's the Pacers
2.  Rondo looks back up to speed and unhindered
3.  Bradleys ball pressure is unbelievaable considering how much time he's missed
4.  Lee has also been playing some inspired defense
5.  Sullinger has benefited from the better perimeter defense immensely as it takes a lot of pressure of him doing rotations and picking up the man off him.  He's been able to put more energy into rebounding and boxing out his man.

Got to give Doc credit, he's trusting Sullinger tonight, and has done a good job so far with the rotations, although I'm sure Bass' foul trouble had some role in it.

Also another thing to note is the lineups.

Rondo - Bradley - Pierce - Sullinger - KG
that lineup has been brilliant. but also...

Bradley - Lee - Pierce - KG - Collins
has been a pretty good lineup as well with some stout defense.

Really Rondo-Bradley-Pierce-KG with any combination of Sullinger, Bass, and maybe Green/Collins is going to be our best lineup.  Kind of leaves Terry hanging out to dry but that's just how it is.  We can't go THAT small with Rondo-Terry-Bradley-Pierce-KG.

Hopefully Sullinger's emergence means Bass's departure.

People are quick to forget how Bass played for us last year.

He was a 6th man of the year candidate until he was pushed into the starting lineup where he STILL performed at a high level.  Was great on the pick and roll defense and was a knockdown shooter.  People don't just forget how to shoot overnight (Lee).  Eventually his shot will start going down.  He's a hard worker, he's not Demarcus Cousins where it's just laziness.  You have to give him time to get back in a groove.

They should play Lance Stephenson as their PG and put Gerald Green out there at the two.

DJ Augustin is killing them. Stephenson as chief creator in the pick and roll with his size and shot-creation off the dribble at the point would be very useful for their misfiring offense right now.

He will never change. He has the least impact on a game than any player I have ever watched play. He's like a placeholder.

Miami losing in a close game to Chicago without Derrick Rose.

Miami have been playing badly as of late. Spoelstra is still clearly very uncomfortable with their small ball lineup.

Funny because he found that small ball lineup that won the championship last year by chance when Bosh went down with the abdominal strain.  Garbage coach blessed with incredible talent.

Heart is contagious. Avery Bradley is spreading it all around. I doubt Green would've hustled his butt back to block Paul George after turning it over without Bradley's presence.

You may be right about Bradley being contagious, but I've seen Green do this before -- epecially when stripped like that.  Green has showed some defensive energy tonight.

I think Spoelstra is a very good coach with typical lineups but that he has a tough time with the unorthodox nature of that Miami Heat team.

I think if Spoelstra was somewhere else and had a more protypical type of lineup, he would be lauded as one of the best coaches in the league.

I don't think so. Bass had two consistent year prior to this year. imo B. Bass got lost in the shuffle as Celtics try to work in the new guys. Doc threw the under bus before the season even began putting his starting job up for grabs. Bass hasn't been the same since shuffling in and out of starting lineup.

Tommy=God

All you need to know about Tommy is he compared Steamer's shot-blocking ability to that of Bill Russell.  ;D

Cousins finished with 31 points and 20 rebounds plus 4 assists tonight.

He is playing like a man possessed since his suspension.

Those are ridiculous numbers.

He plays with a chip on his shoulder. Cousins is perfect for the Celtics culture.

Refs all over the place, I dislike them more than "Psycho-T", and that's saying something.

As games go by, Avery will feel better, and the team will improve. Hopefully the rest of the underperformers start to pick their games up.

Gino Time, at last!

Go Celtics!!!

I'm laughing so hard...Tommy is hilarious!

I don't really like Hansbrough anymore now........

I get killed all the time for saying this, but Tommy is a joke and should retire. He is unlistenable.
I've heard worse around the league. Not to mention bland and lifeless commentators.

Barbosa has the ability to make defense look very, very bad. And the Pacers bench is usually pretty solid.

No one besides him and probably Wade could get away with that. Durant can't even get away with that and he's supposed to be the second best player in the NBA and a superstar.

Awesome game. Energy at the garden was great tonight. Felt like a breakout game.

I'm also beginning to think Avery Bradley is a wizard.

wow sippin ...seems like months since I enjoyed a win....

I feel better now, I know the Celtics do.... ;D

Look....I like KG and Sully together...good chemistry

Long as they are on the court together , you can put anybody else out there with them  and good things happen.

Also ...Bradley is a flame that ignites Rondo to really go after it .....Bradleys numbers don't show the intangibles and 110% he is giving every second.

AB's energy is KG like and picks the team up/

By far, the Cs best game of the season on both ends of the court.  Defensive effort was tremendous.  Hope to see it continue.

Missed the game earlier and just watching it now - wow Bass is horrible.  He knocked the ball straight to an opponent about 3 times so far - his hands must be among the worst int he NBA.

So can we all step away from the ledge, now? :)

A bedrock win for BOS, and it was done with our Bread and Butter - Defense.

Welcome back, AB! Let's get ready for this winning streak!

amazing what happens when you play defense, first time this year Ithought  the defense effort was up to the prior years intensity level. Celtics routed the Pacers with "D"

They earned their pay checks
