Title: Detroit Pistons ... A playoffs team?
Post by: TA9 on January 03, 2013, 02:03:59 PM
What Up!

I found this quote by Will Bynum who believes that the Pistons may indeed get a spot in the comming playoffs this year.

Quote
Will Bynum talked playoffs after the Pistons beat the Miami Heat last week and did so again after Detroit (12-22) defeated Sacramento Tuesday night. “I don’t know what everybody is thinking, but that’s what I’m thinking. I’m thinking playoffs,” Bynum said. “Boston has what, 14 wins? We’re right there. If we continue to play at the level we’re at right now, keep winning games down the stretch in the fourth quarter then I think we’ll be fine. We have a chance.”

I wont take anything away from the Pistons. In my opinion they have played better than expected this year. But is it fair that they are comparing our lousy performance with theirs?

Whats your take on this?

Ah, the perspective of whether you are coming up or down the hill.  For the C's, .500 is a horrible season.  For Detroit, it would be a huge step forward.

2013 Celtics = 2009 Pistons.

Pistons had won a title all the way back in 2004.   In 2008 they still managed to make the Eastern Confernece Finals.  By 2009 the old dogs had nothing left... finished the season 39-43 and lost in the first round.

Welcome to the inevitable.  Detroit's missed the playoffs the last 3 years and this year they are 12-22.  They are on the verge of coming out of the ashes.  That 19 year old beast on their team might be a star some day.  If all goes as planned, we'll be ready to come out of the ashes in 2017.  By then, Rondo will be in his early 30s and hopefully we'll have a couple talented young lottery-plucked pups leading the squad.

I would expect players to be looking at the teams ahead of them and have the belief they can catch and pass that team.

Yeah, this may not be far off.  Although, after Detroit fell off, they compounded their issues by dramatically overpaying bad players (C's may have done the same thing...although I am not sure the contracts are as bad as the ones Detroit gave out), and they traded Billups for Iverson, and have been determined to turn every undersized shooting guard they can get their hands on, into their PG of the future, to try to recreate Billups.

Its easy to make these comparisons, but there are so many things that affect the trajectories of these teams.

I think 2013 Boston is like the 2008 Pistons.

No, I don't think the Pistons can make a playoff push but they are improving and heading in the right direction.

I think a 35 win season is probably about right for Detroit now but I think it'll take closer to 45 wins to claim that final playoff spot in the East.

By 2009 the old dogs weren't there anymore.  Prince and Hamilton weren't by any stretch old, they were in their primes.

Chauncey and Big Ben were their two most valuable players, their leaders on offense and defense, whereas the Celtics still have Pierce and KG.  Iverson and Sheed weren't leading a team to the playoffs at that point.  Don't see the comparison.
