Title: Celtics recall Fab Melo from the D-League
Post by: crownontherocks on January 02, 2013, 11:54:24 AM
Celtics recall Fab Melo from the D-League. Despite a recent streak of dominance in the D-League, it would be a major surprise if Melo earned any meaningful playing time while with the Celtics.

I thought they were only going to recall Fab Melo if he was going to receive playing time here.

Unless it's just a call up for a few days both to remind him that he is in their plans + as a sort of reward for playing well recently ... I would expect Fab Melo to get some playing time coming off the bench.

Claws are off until Friday.  So, he is down here to practice with the C's today and tomorrow, and sit on the bench tonight so KG can whisper in his ear, then its back on the bus to Portland on Friday.

Forsberg believes it's so he can get treatment for the mild concussion he sustained.

Yeah, they need to recalled in order to receive treatment. The same thing happened earlier this season with Melo, with what I believe was a quad contusion.

That's sort of a dumb way to run things.

Teams shouldn't have to recall guy when they have injuries and want to treat them.

Yeah, they need to recalled in order to receive treatment. The same thing happened earlier this season with Melo, with what I believe was a quad contusion.

Here was Doc on why they recalled Melo in early December:

Quote
Rivers also explained a bit of NBA procedural logistics that explained why Fab Melo (strained quadriceps) was recalled by the Celtics for a non-game day before being sent back out today to the Maine Red Claws of the D-League.

“He was injured so the new [CBA] rules are that if you bring him back [from D-League for medical treatment], you have to activate him,” Rivers said. “We had to activate him because he was with us.”

That is just plain stupid.  Why on Earth does a player need to be recalled to recieve medical treatment?  Makes no sense.

The Celtics own his contract, and are the team paying him, regardless of where he plays.

Why does it matter?  There is no limit to call ups and send downs, and it doesn't affect their roster one way or another.

Sure, when no game is due to be played that day.  Doesn't calling a player up also mean another player has to be de-activated?

Nope.  They can call him up, but still have him as inactive.

That's what I thought as well. Unless they de-activated someone (Wilcox because of injuries maybe).

Either way, I wish I could see him sniff the floor for maybe atleast 5-6 minutes or 2 minutes every quarter. At worse he'll challenge all the shots he think he'll be able to. Anything positive we get from that is ULTIMATE GRAVY-LICIOUS stuff

So basically, being "called-up" means absolutely nothing.  What's the point then?

Seems the NBA is making teams fill out unecessary paper work.  Maybe because the Celtics don't actually "own" the Maine Lobsterclaws?

The problem is, when he is challenging all those shots, he is leaving his man wide open.  And getting smoked for a few minutes per game, might just set him back in his development.

But anyways, he just tweeted that he is being called up for them to check out his concussion, and that he will likely be back in Portland Friday.

My guess is that unless there is another injury we don't know about to someone else, he will join Wilcox as the two inactive players tonight.

I am not sure of the details, but I am sure it has to do with contracts/insurance/liabilities/etc.

Has nothing to do with basketball, it is the business side.

I'll go along with this.  ;)  I doubt he'll get a sniff of the game court, but he might have a practice withthe team , and evaluate his progress.
Hanging out with the Celtics , might keep his spirt up and encourage him to keep practicing hard , and they aren't forgetting he is up there.

I'd love to see him get some court time, even if for only 5 minutes. Maybe the odds of him being a positive spark are low, but I'd hate it if we left that "what if?" unanswered when the answer might've been to our liking.

...  the way the team's been going as of late, there will be no shortage of 20-point blowout losses for Fab to get his feet wet in.

Fab Melo says he was called up from the D-League so the Celtics could treat him for a concussion.
Melo actually admitted that he sustained the concussion by walking into the door in his hotel room. So while Celtics fans and fantasy owners likely won't benefit from Melo's on-court actions this season, at least we get a story like that.

It's not like his spirit is down at all. Seems that he knows he's not good enough to swim in the big pool but is working hard to get there.

Lol this is really funny.   Sorry, but it's funny.  Some of the homers desperately wanted Fab to be called up, because he had like 2 good games in the children's league.  Then their prayers are answered only to find out that Fab was only called up, because he bumped his head on a door frame.

Fab's improving, though.  I'll give him that.  He's he's yet cracked the top 50 in the children's league, but he's moving up.

Averaging 10 points, 6 boards and 3.8 blocks.  One of the best shot blockers over there.

I just noticed old friend Luke Harangody is averaging 20 points and 15 boards in that league.

wow ...poor dude...life throw s some serios curve balls for sure....just last week...next door neighbors Uncle slipped outside his home playing with his grandchilden. Hit his head on the side of the brick house , fell down on paved walkway and snapped his neck back and breaking it. Killing him  almost instantely , as in a car violent crash.  He was in excellent health . ???

Wow ...FAB get well soon.
