Title: Missing a defensive coach like Lawrence Frank
Post by: lightspeed5 on December 28, 2012, 03:21:06 AM
Anyone notice a huge void with no defensive coach? When Lawrence Frank (and thibs before that) was here, he was yelling at everyone from the sideline to get into position and it worked.

It might help but father time beats everyone eventually regardless of an extra coach.

Kendrick Perkins or Tony Allen wouldn't hurt either.

Sam Presti would beg to differ with you on that one.

It is true, however, as the original poster points out that we seem to lack any coherent idea of what we're trying to do defensively.

We don't appear to have replaced Frank. Or Thibs, for that matter.

Which is mind-boggling, because the frontcourt personnel and the coaching staff is virtually identical to what we had last year, and Garnett doesn't look like he's lost a step defensively.

Do people not realize how fortunate and unique we were to have assistant coaches of that caliber?  They don't exactly grow on trees, there's luck involved.

We have the same defensive coach as we had last year.  I forget his name, but he has been with the team for years and was promoted to the defensive coach when Frank left...and they seemed fine defensively (at least in the second half) last year.

Ultimately, players are what really matter.

Defensively:
Stiemsma > Collins/Wilcox***
Pietrus > Green
Bradley > Lee
Dooling > Terry

*** This is the big one. We still had a guy protecting the rim when KG left the floor. Steamer did a ton for this team.

I agree with the fact that steamroller was huge for us. Not only did he sometimes put pressure on perimeter shooters with his sprint block, but he controlled the paint pretty good.

I don't.

Steamer was a non-factor on both ends of the court, and he is not missed.

What he did best was foul. A lot.

Just another conflated Celtic with limited skills on this blog, joining a lengthy list.

I disagree with these assessments, it's more like this:

Defensively:

Collins > Stiemsma (Collins is a solid post defender, Steimsma was a highly overrated shot blocker who sucked as a low post defender

Green> Pietrus (Pietrus was hobbled, a shell of his former self)

Bradley > Lee

Ray = Terry (you can't ignore Ray, our starter through the playoffs)
