Game Notes

The Celtics take on divisional rival Brooklyn Nets.  Both teams have a new look since the Celtics swept the series last season.  The Nets have already beaten the Celtics twice this season both at home and on the road.  These two teams will meet once more in April.

The Nets are in 2nd place in the division, one game ahead of the Celtics and 5.5 games behind the Knicks who are in first place.  The Nets are 8-6 at home while the Celtics are just 4-8 on the road.  The Nets are just 3-7 in their last 10 games and are looking for their second straight win.   The Celtics are 4-6 in their last 10 games and are hoping to avoid a 2 game losing streak.

The last game set the stage for this one as it ended with a brawl, technicals,  ejections and fines.   Kevin Garnett drove to the basket and was fouled hard by Kris Humphries.  Kris gave a little extra shove at the end of the play that didn't sit well with Rondo who quickly rushed to KG's defense.  Rondo gave Humphries a shove which resulted in Humphries shoving back and a brawl  of sorts broke out along the baseline spilling into the crowd.   Rondo somehow lost his jersey along with his double figure assist streak as he was ejected from the game along with Humphries and Gerald Wallace.

These two teams split a pair of preseason games with the Nets winning  97-96 at the Garden and the Celtics winning 115-85 in their very first ever trip to the Barclays Center. The Nets also won twice in the regular season,  102-97 in Boston and 95-83 in Brooklyn.

This is the first game of a 4 game road trip that will take the Celtics through California facing the Clippers, Kings and Warriors after this game vs the Nets.  The Celtics are hoping to get Avery Bradley back at some time on the trip, which would give the team a much needed boost.

There is plenty of bad blood between these two teams and it may very well get chippy in this game as well.   Hopefully the Celtics use that last game as motivation to come out strong and play their best game.   The best revenge would be a Celtics win.

Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4149.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3929.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Deron Williams
Rondo loves playing against the other top PG's in the league. He also loves national TV games.   Expect a big game from him as this game has both and he'll be at his best.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3333.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3520.jpg)
Jason Terry vs Joe Johnson
Jason Terry has been praised by Doc for his defense this season and he's going to have to play defense as he faces Joe Johnson, who is capable of putting points on the board in a hurry.  On the other side, Johnson hasn't been a lock down defender and hopefully Jet will snap out of the slump he was in last game and should be able to get his points.  (But, I'm hoping to see Avery at this spot today.)

Honorable Mention
Jason Collins vs Brook Lopez
Lopez is playing very well this season averaging 17.7 ppg, 6.9 rpg, and 2.4 bpg.  In his last game,  he scored 16 points with a team-high 10 rebounds.  Collins defense will be much needed in this game.

Keys to the Game

Defense - The Celtics need to tighten up their defense, especially in transition and on the pick and roll.  It is their defense that is going to set them apart from the rest of the league and so far this season, it has been very lax.

Bench Play - The Celtics need their reserves to find their chemistry and to produce.  The Celtics starters can't carry the team every night and still be fresh at the end of the game.  With Chris Wilcox, and Leandro Barbosa out, the bench will be thin, but players like Brandon Bass, Jared Sullinger, and especially Courtney Lee and Jeff Green must produce.

Rebound - The Celtics need to crash the boards in order to limit New Jersey's fast break points and second chance points.  When they put out the effort to win the battle of the boards, that often translates to the rest of their game.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics have got to be the more aggressive team.  They have to drive to the basket and not settle for jumpers, especially when the jumpers aren't falling.  They must be aggressive on the boards and in going after loose balls.  Too often we see the opposing team hustling for loose balls and rebounds while the Celtics look rooted to the floor.  They can't be passive and expect to win the game.

X-Factor
On the Road and Avery
The Celtics are once again on the road and the last road trip didn't go very well.  We can only hope that this one goes a bit better and that they can start it with a win.  Also, getting Avery Bradley back for this game would be a huge boost to the team.  But we won't know until game time if he will be able to play or not.

Oh sorry, just saw Jeff Green on that injury list and then remembered why he is unavailable.

I had wanted Doc to start J.Green instead of J.Terry but not an option. So Courtney Lee is the next best choice. He'll have to take Joe Johnson. And hope JJ falls in love with his jumper (which often happens) instead of attacking the size difference.

I would also like to see Doc use Sully as the primary option against Kris Humphries. Bass doesn't really add anything to the table against Humphries. Only costs them possessions with his inability to take away Humphries rebounding advantage. Sully is a better matchup here because of his superior rebounding (over Bass).

I would also like to see Jason Collins moved to a reserve role. It is important Boston keeps size/length on the floor at all times against New Jersey. When Garnett rests. They cannot afford to put an undersized power forward on B.Lopez defensively. Nor can either PF be expected to cover Andray Blatche defensively who is simply too big and too skilled for Bass/Sully. Jason Collins is the best non-Garnett matchup against both B.Lopez and A.Blatche. He needs to be on the floor whenever Garnett isn't.

Kris Joseph should take over Green's role while he is injured. The Celtics need his size and defense/rebounding off the bench. Especially against New Jersey who have very powerful wings and are a quality rebounding team. An undersized perimeter trio of Rondo / Terry / Barbosa (PG and SG) + Lee (SF) would leave the Celtics to vulnerable in terms of defense and rebounding. Doc needs to trust the rookie.

Unless Brooklyn goes small with Deron + CJ Watson at the same time, I want to see Doc avoid small backcourts against this Nets team.

PG: Rondo, Terry
SG: Lee, (K.Joseph), Barbosa
SF: Pierce, K.Joseph
PF: Sully, Bass
C:  Garnett, J.Collins

I'm pretty sure Green is playing.  He went through practice and said he'd be playing.  I just included him on the injured list because, well, he is injured.  But he also plans on playing.

Celtics are signing Jarvis Varnado- Not sure if he'll be with the team by Tuesday or not.

I dread this game , we totally don't matchup ,  it fully exposes the Celtics worse weakness of lack of tuffness and bigs with paint presence.

WAtching this game is like going to see your little brother beat up in a bully fight.

Nets enjoy terrorizing the Celtics physically .

Bad matchup , no Wilcox ,  lack of muscle in the paint.

Maybe some Celtic luck will pop up on Christmas.

I read somewhere that Humphries had fallen out of the Nets rotation. That he got a DNP recently. That Avery Johnson is looking in another direction for that starting PF slot.

Not sure ... but Humphries may not be starting for NJ tomorrow.

I'd like to see Sully kept to Humphries / R.Evans.

I don't want to see him on B.Lopez or A.Blatche. Or Gerald Wallace if Wallace is being played as a quick four (power forward).

Doc needs to protect Sully, matchup wise. And combination wise (no Bass/Sully big man combo).

Question, how is something a no-call when someone passes the ball before running through a defender? How does that change things at all? Running through a defender, with or without ball is illegal contact, right?

Yeah, that made no sense. What I think is incorrectly called is when they run through a defender who hasn't been set. In those cases I'd say a no call or a defensive foul, same as if the player had the ball in his hands.

Jeff Green is CLUELESS on defense - a decent high school player should know to watch "ball-me-man" .......... no wonder the D goes in the tank when KG sits down.

Danny has continued to add mediocre defensive players that have watered down our once great D.

You're aware that they're double teaming him everytime he touches the ball right? Just got a foul called posting up, and previously found Sulliger open, plus the ballmovement that led to Terry's shot.

3 plays in a row where Green had a hand in the offense.

He's not fitting well with our roster though particularly because of Bass. We get rid of Bass for a bigger PF/C type, and everyone should fit well. Else, just play Wilcox over Bass more (when healthy).

Sully is smart,  his job isn't to score 20 points a game like in college .   JJJ NEVER learned this and wouldn't do the things Doc wanted .  ie ..rebounding fighting for ball, charges.

Sully does all the little things that is going to earn him , MORE offense looks in the future.

That's completely inaccurate. Rondo doesn't like to run, or at least, it's difficult for him to run. In fact, a couple of years ago he admitted to himself that he needs to force himself to run. Doc is constantly calling for him to push the ball. Garnett is old? He's still one of the most mobile bigs in the league who constantly out runs other bigs. We have Pierce who has power and and great for a trailer 3. Bass is mobile too.

There's no excuse for Rondo not to be pushing the ball. Sorry, but it's just flat out wrong for him to walk the ball up regardless who he's playing with. The worst that can happen is that we start our offense early.

Yep, he came in great shape this year. Loved the pick-up, hated how lost he's looked so far in defense, but looks to finding it now with repetitions.

Real Sad. But unfortunately true. He is timid on offense when he has the ball, does not seem to understand the offensive sets, and is always at least 1 step too slow on defensive rotations. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, trade Bass with Lee (after AB returns).

We NEED Rondo to SCORE the ball.  I'd rather see him with 20 and 8 as opposed to 8 and 20.  Like Magic said at halftime - it's time to see Rondo go from "star" to "SUPER STAR" - His assists are overrated when we're losing half our games.

Sully showcasing out there i love it. Most teams would want a young guy like sully on their team.

Why in the hell would we want to "showcase" him??  We NEED him - he's the best rebounder on this team.  Why the desire to ship him out.

We need to rid ourselves of the worthless Bass and the useless Lee - THOSE are the two guys that are dead weight on this team.

You're listening to that idiot Bill Simmons ramble too much...

First of all i agree with everything you said except the fact we NEED sully. Hes a rookie that in all likely hood won't see as much time once the playoffs start. That being said id rather get rid of bass over sully. Problem is most teams would prefer sully. The guys i would trade sully for are all upgrades over him.

Sully's contract is cost efficient.  A team with CAP issues like the Celtics NEED a contract like that.  High efficiency at low cost = bargain.  Sully's a bargain - you don't hand those away.

We are in win NOW mode. We have to make a trade. We are not winning a championship with collins at center buddy. And good luck getting a quality center/PF without giving up sully or bradley.

Again, if it was up to me id RATHER trade bass lee and melo too. That being said teams are gonna be asking for sully or bradley or both. You aren't gonna get a quality center without giving up one of those guys PERIOD. You talk about future but we are in win NOW mode. We are looking for the best moves to make so we can win RIGHT NOW. Our championship window is 1-2 years right now.

This is a very soft league. sullinger is looking more untradable by the game. I'm also getting very sick of watching terry. if i had to pick lee or terry I would def. pick lee. coming into the season, I would have never have thought I'd feel like that. lots of changing opinions for me. a side note if I were a brooklyn fan I would be tired of see sermon Williams sour puss.

wow. where did that team in green come from today? It was as if doc rivers read every post of mine on here and did exactly as I said. attack the basket the whole game. we did that basically. we ran at times after defensive rebounds. fantastic! easy buckets in transition. the D speaks for itself. holding a team under 80? impressive. we did not settle for contested jumpers once we had the big lead. wide open jumpers are fine(as long as we keep attacking the basket also and we did)...just not contested. anybody can shoot contested jumpers.

some nice passes to sully in the paint for easy scores. we'll still need a big guy to go deep in the playoffs even once AB comes back. sully, terry and wilcox and collins should give us a decent bench though compared to last year. get a starter at center and keep KG at the 4 spot. Trade green, bass, lee, barbosa, etc.

I don't mean to grinch but to me this was more of a Nets loss than a Celtic win. I'm really glad Sully and Green stepped up and scored a bit but I was looking at some of the numbers the Nets put up and I watched the 2nd half of the game. Every player except Gerald Wallace looked like they had just eaten Christmas dinner; sluggish, uninterested and generally out of sync.

I like the win, I'm not giving it back. I just think that the Nets are in a funk right now and we shouldn't hype the excellent play of our team over that win. Let's decisively beat the Knicks, the Heat or a Western conference team of worth before we start raising flags. So far we have a win against the Thunder and that is mostly it.

Great Team win..The C's just did what I remember Celtics teams of old do - they imposed their will on BKN. BKN wasn't able to get many easy looks all game.

Jason Collins? I can see why Doc starts him now. The man played physical D on Brooke, which knocked him off axis early.

Brooke today was certainly NOT Brook from the previous two games, thanks in big part to Jason.

Great game by Rajon Rondo...he basically controlled the game without getting double-digit assists.

I may take some flack for this, but Rajon was clearly better than Deron today, and he HAS been better than Deron the last two yrs. Deron is beginning to look a bit over-rated, to me.

Perhaps one day Rajon Rondo will get the recognition ranking-wise that he deserves, but he clearly is a better leader than Deron basketball-wise. Just in today's game alone, the only time BKN made a run was when Gerald Wallace tried to put them on his back...Deron just seemed to check out of the game.

Great games by Jared and Super 8. I've said it before and I'll say it again - Jared Sullinger doesn't play like a rookie. He is already a special player, and will only get better.

Bass played well, as well as Jet, KG, Paul (10 assists) and Lee. Just a great TEAM win.

First of all i agree with everything you said except the fact we NEED sully. Hes a rookie that in all likely hood won't see as much time once the playoffs start.

I disagree.

In the past Doc has never played a rookie big minutes period, but that's because he's never had a rookie that could give veteran-calibire production.

Sully is getting minutes right now because he's playing the right way and because he's not playing like a rookie.  He's right for rebounds. he's taking charges, his moving the ball well, finishing well around the basket and he's doing it all with a great attitude.

As long a Sully continues to play the way he has he will continue to get minutes regardless of whether it's the regular season or playoffs.  Sully has been outplaying Bass for some time now, and Doc clearly recognises that - today he played twice as many minutes as Bass did.

We need to trade out any combination of Bass, Lee, Barbosa and picks.

* Bass because he's redundant and Sully is doing just about everything better

* Lee because he becomes redundant once Bradley returns

* Barbosa because he's very streaky and too good a player to have riding the pine - he deservers an opportunity to play more

* Picks because if we have enough young guys, and if we make the right trade our future will already be set.  Plus we are a playoff team so our picks will be late first round in a weak draft.

I'd prefer to keep both Sully and Melo but I would be willing to let them go if it would get us a youngish and high quality package in return (e.g. Cousins and Tyreke Evans, Gortat, Millsap, Josh Smith).

I would still do everything in my power to try to make a trade work without giving those guys up, and only would add them if it was absolutely necessary.

I think Bass is as good as gone to be honest.  There are too many signs to ignore:

1. Bass' drop from the starting lineup
2. Bass' drop in minutes (less than 20 today)
3. Recent signing of a seemingly redundant power forward

All of the above tells me that Doc has Bass about ready to ship out, he's planning to start either Collins or Sully, then he's bringing in a low cost D league player as backup insurance once Bass is gone.

Adding to this I see Barbosa as a potential addition.  He's a athletic and talented volume scorer on a vet minimum deal - that's the type of asset a lot of teams would have an interest in, so he may be a very valuable filler in any deal.  For us he becomes pretty redundant once Bradley comes back, as both he and Terry can man the PG spot just as capably as Barbosa can.

Finally Lee - he's certainly shown improvement in the last 10 games (as opposed to the time prior to that) but I think once Bradley returns there's not going to be a lot of playing time for him.  With Rondo playing nearly 40 mins a game and Bradley starting at SG, I'd expect to see Terry soak up a lot of those remaining minutes at both guard spots...and it would be a waste to [ay $6M for a guy who will be playing at most 10 minutes a night.

I really hope the rumour is true about Sacramento trade.  If we could get either Tyreke Evans + Demarcus Cousins or Tyreke Evans + Jason Thompson (either works well) then it would strengthen our lineup significantly.

If it means giving up either Bass or Sully (not both) for a deal like that I'd be willing to pull the trigger.  I would rather keep Sully but I know he'd get more interest from other teams, and I'd be happy enough with Bass as a backup PF behind Cousins/KG/Thompson - as long as he's not starting he's fine.

You realize that we didn't have 12 men to put in uniform on this trip, and  that we're down to three healthy big men not named Kevin Garnett, right?

If you think this signing has anything to do with Brandon Bass, you're not paying attention to the full picture.

wow. where did that team in green come from today?

Well stop the presses, I am pretty sure we should nominate you as the replacement coach for Doc.  Who needs doc when we have you? haha

I agree 100% with your post.  With no Wilcox, we are desperately thin at PF/C.  I mean, no offense against collins, but he should be at best a break open in an emergency kind of guy.  I guess we are at that point already.  C's just need another big warm body.

Even though I loved our effort and D today, we were still forced to play the dreaded Sully and Bass combination for short stretches today.  Great win though.  I wish we could at least get that effort from everyone every game, even if we don't get the results we want.

I don't think Varnado will see much time. But we had a roster spot and needed some insurance, so there you go. He may well be gone in 10 days -- or they send him to Maine. Of course he can always end up being a gem in the rough, but I don't think the move is signalling anything about Bass' status with the team.

I'm also getting very sick of watching terry. if i had to pick lee or terry I would def. pick lee. coming into the season, I would have never have thought I'd feel like that. lots of changing opinions for me. a side note if I were a brooklyn fan I would be tired of see sermon Williams sour puss.

How on earth do you figure this?

According to every single statistic I have seen out there Terry has been FAR better to us than Lee on both offense and defense.

For example you can see here:
http://basketballvalue.com/player.php?year=2012-2013&id=6&sortnumber=10&sortorder=DESC

According to these numbers our defensive rating is 101.02 with Terry on the court and 107.4 when he is on the bench (-6.38).

Our offensive rating is 104.08 with Terry on the court and 99.77 when he is on the bench (+4.3).

That's an overall rating of +10.68 when Terry is on the court, which is good for third on the team behind Pierce (+12.88) and KG (+11.17).

These are the only three players on the Celtics that make it in the top 50:
http://basketballvalue.com/topplayers.php?year=2012-2013&mode=summary&sortnumber=21&sortorder=DESC

If you would like to compare with Lee, his numbers are here:
http://basketballvalue.com/player.php?year=2012-2013&id=788

Our Def rating is 105.03 with Lee on the court, 101.84 when he is off the court (+3.19)

Our Off rating is 100.17 with Lee on the court, 104.68 when he is off the court (-4.51)

Basically we get worse on both defense AND on offense when Lee is on the court.  We are statsistically better off without him.

We have Garnett and Collins who can play center and Bass, Sullinger and Green who can play PF.

So we are pretty much fine at PF, but we could use another center until Wilcox returns.

Rather than call up Fab Melo (a player who's main talents are shot blocking, taking charges and being a legit 7-foot center) from the D league purely as insurance, we instead signed yet another undersized 6'9" power forward who will probably get no playing time behind Green, Sullinger and Bass.

You can't make the argument that they signed him over Melo because they wanted a veteran because well...as far as I know this guy has never played an NBA game in his life.

So if Boston were so desperately in need of last resort insurance at the center spot, why waste a roster spot on a random PF from the D-League when you already have Fab Melo taking up a roster spot?

It makes no sense.

Collins is doing a perfectly fine job of backing up the center spot right now while KG is on the bench and he can handle that role just fine until Wilcox returns.  We don't need a center to give us minutes, we only need one as a last resort backup in case (knock on wood) KG or Collins cannot play.  There is no reason why Fab couldn't act as a 7-foot bench warmer and then come in for the occasional spot minute (like Hollins did last season) until Wilcox comes back, then they could send him back to the D-league again.

I'm telling you right now, if there is any trade happening it's going to involve Bass or Sullinger, and the only time it's going to be Sullinger is if nobody has an interest in Bass (which right now, I wouldn't blame them).

Yup...that was GREAT STUFF !!! Me and the wife got a kick out of that bit of showmanship.

I'm expecting or hoping for more antics from Pierce , it means he is feeling good .

Maybe its a sign of good things to come.

here's hoping it's a sign of things to come -- as in, the C's have FINALLY turned the corner on putting forth a solid effort EVERY night through the rest of the season.

Green is not a PF. No, really.

Melo is better served by playing in Maine rather than sitting on the bench with the team.

And I'm telling you right now that there's a zero chance a trade involving Bass or Sullinger will happen in the observable future. I expect Varnado to be gone or in Maine within 10 days or so.

Right now I a bit curious to see how Green and Sully continue to play.

When we play the CLippers , this will be a good yard stick , to see how good /or bad the Celtics can handle a team of young athletic bigs .
