Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3007.jpg) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4287.jpg)
Kevin Garnett vs Joakim Noah
Noah brings a lot of energy to the Bulls and he is a presence in the paint.  KG has to match his energy.   In the past,  Noah has been able to get to the basket at will for rebounds and tip ins.  He is also blocking 2.3 shots a game.   KG has got to box him out and defend the paint.  This might be a good game for Doc to give Collins some run if Noah starts to go wild inside.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4149.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3710.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Kirk Hinrich
Rondo and Hinrich have history together going back to the 2009 playoffs when Rondo shoved Hinrich into the scorer's table and the 2 got into a skirmish.  Rondo has a speed advantage on Hinrich but Hinrich is a good shooter and so Rondo will need to stay with him on defense.

Honorable Mention

Paul Pierce vs Luol Deng
Pierce and Deng are always a fun matchup to watch.  Deng is long and a very good defender and has been able to bother Pierce in the past.   He will make Pierce work for his points.  Deng has also been shooting well and is scoring 17.8 ppg and in the past has put up some big games against the Celtics.

Game Notes

This is the second of 4 meetings between these two teams.  The Bulls are doing very with a 13-9 record in spite of missing their all star point guard for the season so far. The Bulls are 7-3 in their last 10 games while the Celtics are 5-5 in their last 10.  The Celtics are 4-7 on the road while the Bulls are 7-6 at home.

The Bulls are coached by former Celtics assistant and defensive guru, Tom Thibodeau.  It follows that they hang their hat on their defense.  They are 2nd in the league allowing just 90.86 points per game on 42.6% shooting.  The Celtics, on the other hand have struggled with their defense so far this season, ranking 16th and allowing 97.91 points per game on 44.7% shooting.

The Celtics have dropped the first 2 games on their road trip and need to win this game to stay above .500 for the year.   The Celtics have had 2 days off while the Bulls are playing in the second of back to back games after a tough game in Memphis on Monday night.

Keys to the Game

Rebound -   The Celtics are once again last in rebounding, grabbing just 38.97 per game while the Bulls are 7th with 43.73 rebounds per game.  The Celtics  have to box out and keep Noah from getting easy tip ins and to keep the Bulls from piling up the second chance baskets.  The Celtics have got to crash the boards as a team and not just expect the bigs to get the rebounds.  They are much more effective when the guards go up strong after rebounds as well.

Defense
- Defense has been the Celtics strength in recent years.  It has also been a strength for the Bulls.  So far this season, the Celtics have struggled on defense while the Bulls have been playing tough on the defensive end.    The Celtics need to match the defensive intensity of the Bulls if they want to come out of this game with a win.

Be Aggressive - It's no secret that the more aggressive team gets the calls and usually the win.  The Celtics must start out being aggressive and that starts with Rondo.  They have to be aggressive on the boards, in defending, in going after loose balls, and especially in getting inside to the basket instead of settling for outside jumpers.

X-Factors
Rest vs Fatigue
The Celtics have had 2 days off and should be rested while the Bulls played on Monday night and will be playing in back to back games.  Hopefully the Celtics will be energized and will catch the Bulls a bit tired.

Chicago played Memphis last night--final score was 80-71. Bulls lost.

I'm expected an ugly game of basketball, with a serious emphasis on defense.

Yup, this will be a LOW SCORING affair.   Maybe 15-20 points a quarter at best.  It will appear neither team can hit a shot , the defense will be really intense.

We could combine BOTH the Celtics and Bulls teams and make ONE really good squad. ;D

No predictions .  probally be decided the last 5 seconds.

The Bulls are one of the best teams in the league at creating extra possessions. They were 2nd in rebounding differential last I checked and 3rd in combined rebounding + turnover differential.

The Celtics are pretty much bottom of the league in rebounding differential + 3rd from bottom in combined rebounding and turnover differential.

The Celtics have on average 3.27 possessions less a game than their opponents. While the Bulls have the opposite, a positive 3.33 possessions a game. A difference of 6.7 possessions a game. A huge number.

That is where Chicago does most of it's damage. Defense and extra possessions.

It'll probably be a fun game to watch for those of us who enjoy gritty games, for sure.

That said, I'm still really bummed out about the Derrick Rose injury--he was one of my favorite modern players to watch and root for, and this matchup would've been about a bazillion times more exciting if he was healthy.

I expect the Bulls to be a difficult matchup for Jeff Green. One of the best defensive teams in the league. A top notch defensive SF in Luol Deng with excellent size. A very good defensive PF in Taj Gibson with excellent quickness.

Not a lot of advantageous opportunities for Jeff Green there. Maybe some minutes against the backup SF but Jimmy Butler is a solid defender too.

I'd go the other way and expect this to be a difficult game for Jeff Green.

Just tuning in, those were some impressive passes by Joakim Noah on that highlight reel.

It's great to have talented big man passers.

I'd like to see Doc go big tonight against Chicago. Two legit big men + Pierce and Green together on the wing. I want Doc to force Marco Belinelli to defend either Pierce or Green in the low post.

Not liking the two guard matchups with Terry and Lee against Belinelli. They're fine. They're not problems. But I am not convinced they are advantages for Boston either. A Jeff Green or Paul Pierce vs Marco Belinelli would be an advantage for Boston.

I've always liked Belinelli. I still think he is more of a big PG than a small SG and a much better player at the point too.

If Boston plays Jason Terry against Belinelli, he has that PG type matchup. The size advantage to see (pass) and shoot over the top of the smaller defender. Terry is gifted enough offensively to make up for that on the other end but it'll probably be a neutral matchup. Maybe even an advantage for Chicago if Terry continues to play a peripheral role offensively.

If Doc goes with Courtney Lee, Boston has an effective defensive option on Marco but the two will neutralize one another. Maybe less if Lee continues to misfire with his jump-shot.

Marco Belinelli struggles with size defensively (and offensively for that matter). Even with solidly built two guards. Nevermind a power three like Jeff Green or Paul Pierce. Those two guys could really do a lot of damage against Belinelli. That is where Boston's most advantageous matchup is against Belinelli.

Yeah, it seems like anytime Deng goes to the hole it is an automatic foul on the C's.  Of course Sully seems to be caught a lot.  I can't wait til the refs stop giving him the rookie treatment on D.

Since h has gotten fouled four times going to the basket, shouldn't he have 8 free throws?

Another thing about Bass, he never tries to stand in for a charge.  I think I've seen him take one charge and on that charge, he was wincing while it was occurring, more than you usually see.  That's what got me thinking that he's pretty soft.

I am not sure there is any other team that plays at such a high level in terms of effort and focus on a regular basis as Chicago does and has done throughout Tom Thibodeau's tenure.

Excellent job by Bass helping off of Butler to help on Taj Gibson who had the mismatch in the post. Stopped the initial post up. Forced the pass out. Stopped the second post up with a deflection and forces a turnover.

Oooh, follows it up with a lovely baseline spin move out of the block against Luol Deng. And one. Three point play.

Our level of intensity on D just does not match up to the Bulls.  We need to stop taking so many jump shots and get to the rim, and force the issue.

On D, we need to play a lot smarter.  Wilcox got caught in mid switch on Nate when he hit his 2nd 3 pointer.  Gotta stay with the shooter if you are going to switch, you can't just leave him have a wide open 3.

This is also what I get from the players' body language. They're just going through the motions... they've quitted trying and they just wait until AB comes back or a trade happens and then turn on the switch once again this year. Not gonna happen! :(

I really wonder if we are doubling way too much right now. It is putting our bigs out of position way way too much.  We aren't athletic enough at the 4/5 to play D the way Doc is trying to make them.  Thus we are always leaving open guys down low = good fg % for our opponents.

Taj Gibson needs to continue to work on that midrange and long two point jump-shot.

It'll take his career to another level. He'll be a 35 minute a night player and probably make a bunch of All-Defensive teams as well as being a nightly double double threat.

When we consciously put effort into boxing out, our rebounding improves  dramatically. Too bad   we only do so  for spurts at a time.

I would like Doc to really challenge JG to play intense D on Deng in the 2nd 1/2.  PP is too slow to stop LD.  He is getting to the rim way too much.  JG isn't doing anything on O tonight, give him a shot to disrupt the bulls offense.

Bass really sucks so of course he's played 11 minutes already, second most on the team.  Must be the intangibles.

It's not like Sully or Wilcox where lighting it up out there.

Exactly. I don't get Bass Bashing. He is one few guys giving 100% every game. You can deal with few missed shots as long as he is hustling out there.

Bass did not play well.  His defense was horrible.  Not rotating to get in front of the basket and on those back to back baskets by Boozer off the same play, those were against Bass.  He also turned down a jumper, which he does with maddening frequency since that's the one area he's good at, to try and make a pass off the dribble, which he is not good at.  Predictably, he threw it away.

I'd admit that I'm pretty hard on Bass but he's being used out of his element.  He's a backup who should be playing in around 20 minutes a game because his weaknesses really got the team.  Instead, he played the most minutes in the first half.  I don't get it.  I don't like Green at PF but if it's between Bass playing 18 minutes and Green only 6, I can take Green at PF.

I would love to see Doc start the second half with Jeff Green instead of Courtney Lee.

Go big on the wing and force Belinelli off the court. Make them put in Jimmy Butler instead. It'll leave Hinrich as the sole ball-handler for Chicago. Let Rondo pressure Hinrich. Disrupt the Bulls' offensive flow. Try and force some turnovers.

If they leave Belinelli on, then they can post up Pierce / Green against Marco as often as they want. Belinelli has no hope at being able to defend either one of them below 15 feet.

Your singling out Bass as if he is the main source of Celtics problems. He was good enough to start for this team that nearly made it to the finals.

BTW he has the best +/- differential.

I would love to know how many minutes Jeff Green and Paul Pierce have played alongside one another on the wing.

I looked up Pierce's top twenty lineups (lineups with ten minutes or more) and none of them had the two out there together on the wing. Plenty of small-ball lineups where they played alongside one big man but none alongside two big men.

Just did the same for Jeff Green. None in his top twenty either (lineups with 7 minutes or more).

The thing about resting KG so much is, why not do it with everyone else then.  This team does not have a great shot of winning unless KG plays a lot, one because he's still a great player and two because his backups are very low IQ players.  He's basically using up the others to no end.  Just rest them all then if that's more important.

You may know this but on nba.com under the stats tab they have advanced stats, and one of the choices is player vs player. Plug in PP and Green for the two players and it will show you how much time they play together and how the team performs when both or just PP or just Green are in the game.

You may know this but on nba.com under the stats tab they have advanced stats, and one of the choices is player vs player. Plug in PP and Green for the two players and it will show you how much time they play together and how the team performs when both or just PP or just Green are in the game.

Yeah, I thought of that but I just want their stats when playing at the SG + SF positions together instead of the SF + PF positions where most of their minutes together come from. So that didn't really work for me.

Side note: Jeff Green's stats get a major boost with Pierce on the floor alongside him. His scoring rises from 13.4 points per 36 minutes to 19.5. His field goal percentage jumps from 40% to 51%. About 200 minutes with Pierce alongside him versus 330 minutes without Pierce. The team has a +/- of +2.2 with them on the court together and a -4.8 with Jeff Green there by himself.

Pierce's field goal percentage drops but his FTAs go way up and he scores more as a result. Which you would expect (the increased FTAs) with a small ball lineup. Better opportunities to attack the paint. More efficient scoring due to all the FTAs. Increased rebounding from Pierce also.

Celtics are the most disappointing team in the league.  At least the Lakers have a coaching change and injuries to their two of their top guys as excuses.  Celtics really have none.  They're 12-12 but with a negative scoring differential, a defensive rating that's heading backwards all the time, an offense rated in the 20s and yep, they still can't rebound.

Does he protect the rim? Does he rebound the ball? Does he create offense?

I think you missed second part of my post

They will.

Avery Bradley being back, and addition of mobile shot blocking 7 footer (Melo Maybe) will right this ship.

that last part is practically science fiction

Fine.

Not only the third straight loss on this road trip but it's the third straight double digit loss.

The Cavs are next.  If the Celtics manage to lose to them (unlikely, but who knows), they'll have 4 straight difficult opponents.

We could actually be looking at 7 losses in 8 games, or even maybe 8 straight losses.

I am going to say one thing because I am frustrated. Bass and Lee should be shopped hard. If Green needs to be added or Sullinger so be it, because this team as constructed is shaky. I am a fan of Green and I believe we should wait after Bradley comes back, but still come on. I'm just speaking out of frustration. Go Celtics.

Well Doc has his work cut out for him.  The team isn't gelling like everyone expected and we don't seem to be giving max. effort.  Something needs to change obviously.  We will be home for the playoffs if this level of play continues.

After a loss like this, all options should be on the table to make the team better.  Trades, benching, alternate coaching approaches...

Just really poor effort and execution.

Please. This is the most embarrassing loss in a long, long time.
yep and my cup is always half full of green kool aid

players who played well or at the least played beyond expectations tonight
rajon rondo & jason collins
players who played below their level or outright stunk
everyone else

if this is how things are going to turn i'm worried rondo will opt out when his contract is up

Everyone who is not Rondo, KG, Pierce, or Terry needs to be on the trading block.

JET's expression at the end of the game: "[dang], why did I get that tattoo?"

Hate to say it, but we're in worse shape than the Lakers.  At least they have a legitimate excuse with key players being injured and all.

I will continue to wait till All-Star break to truly judge the team.  Still 58 games left.

What would be the point?  This great supporting cast does not have much trade value.  Any players they bring in won't be much different or better than the players already here.

terry? sorry not so much, his defense is pretty poor so if he isn't hitting his shots he hurts us

I'm blaming the refs for this loss. The game was competitive in the first three quarters, but you could see the Celtics losing steam as they continually failed to get the calls that the Bulls were getting on the other end.

yeah, keepers at this point are only Rondo and KG based on their play and PP for his service to the team in his career.  other than that, everyone's on the block for the right pieces.

refs were bad -- for both teams, not just the C's.  this loss is on the C's.  players didn't perform.  very clear cut.

KG was the train for this team the past few season, but he has lost his steam.  We need someone who will battle, especially in the paint for rebounds, take charges, block shots basically earning tommy points left and right. We need back guys with similar makeup to Leon Powe, Popeye Jones that will drive the team to play more intense. When you bring in guys like Green , the team suddenly turns softer and inconsistent. I'm actually upset but also neutral the way things are going bc eventually danny has to do something. He has to understand, small ball is not the new nba

as usual...team still doesn't address issues from game to game. defense is getting worse and they are lost at sea. Very disappointing. Very frustrating.

Bottom line is this team stinks. There is no more excuses. they stink
