Rockets Coach Kevin McHale played for the Celtics from 1980-93, was a member of three championship teams and had his #32 retired on January 30, 1994
Marcus Morris and Paul Pierce both attended Kansas
Jared Sullinger and Daequan Cook both attended Ohio State
Jeff Green and James Harden were teammates in Oklahoma City from 2009-11.

Game Notes
The Celtics begin their 3 game road trip in Houston where they take Linsanity and The Beard.   They also will face old friend and former Celtic,  Kevin McHale, who is back on the Rockets bench after missing over a month due to the death of his daughter.

The Rockets are a decent home team with an 8-5 record at the Toyota Center.  The Celtics have slipped to 4-5 on the road.  Both teams are 6-4 in their last 10 games.  The Celtics, who are going for their second 3 game win streak of the season, have climbed past Philly for 3rd in the Atlantic and have the same 12-9 record as the Nets.   Both teams are 4 games behind the Knicks.  Houston is looking for their second straight win and are 4th in the Southwest division, 7 games behind the Spurs.

First, Jeff Green faced his former team,  then KG faced his former team, and in the last game, Jason Terry faced his former team.  Now, it's time for Courtney Lee to face his old team.  Lee has been struggling to find his role in the Celtics system and this would be a good time for a break out game from him.

The Celtics have a game in San Antonio on Saturday so they need to play smart and save some energy for the Spurs.  Hopefully the bench will come through and allow the starters to get some rest.  .

Key Matchups
(http://msn.foxsports.com/fe/images/NBA/Headshots/140x170/4149.jpg)  vs  (http://msn.foxsports.com/fe/images/NBA/Headshots/140x170/4795.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Jeremy Lin
As Rondo goes, so go the Celtics.  The fact that Rondo played over 52 minutes in the Celtics 2OT win over the Mavs shows how important he is on the court.  The Celtics simply don't have a replacement for him.  The last time Rondo faced Lin in NY, he delighted in shutting him down.  I can see him doing the same thing in this game.

(http://msn.foxsports.com/fe/images/NBA/Headshots/140x170/3333.jpg)  vs  (http://msn.foxsports.com/fe/images/NBA/Headshots/140x170/4563.jpg)
Jason Terry vs James Harden
James Harden is capable of putting up a lot of points and Jason Terry will need to work extra hard on defense to contain him.  At the same time, the Celtics need JET to get his shot back on track as they need his offense.

Honorable Mention
Kevin Garnett vs Omer Asik
Asik is a good defender and so KG will have to use his veteran wiles to get his shot off against him.  Asik won't put up a ton of points, but he is a double double threat and KG will need to try to keep him off the boards.

Keys to the Game
Defense - The Celtics must keep their defensive mindset.    Defense wins games and it will win a championship.  The Celtics are beginning to come together defensively, and  that trend needs to continue as they now need to develop more consistency on that end.  They allowed Dallas to score 60 points in the paint.  They have to keep the Rockets from getting into the paint to score.

Rebounding -  Rebounding is second to defense in importance in winning games.   The Celtics need to put out effort to crash the boards and prevent the Rockets second chance points and fast break opportunities which Lin and Harden will take full advantage of.   Rebounding is effort and desire and when they Celtics bring the effort on the boards, it spreads to the other areas of their game.

Be Aggressive -  Too many times  we see the Celtics get beat to loose balls and rebounds.  The Celtics have to be aggressive in going after loose balls, grabbing rebounds and taking the ball to the basket.  After the double OT game on Wednesday, their legs may tire quicker and if the jumpers aren't falling, they have to get into the paint.   The more aggressive team will get  more respect from the refs and they also take some steam out of the other team by attacking and being aggressive.

Bench Play - The Celtics need their second unit to come in and contribute on both ends of the court.  The starters are going to be tired and they are playing back to back and so the bench will be needed to come through with some quality minutes.

X-Factor
Focus on the Road
The Celtics are on the road and need to keep their focus in order to win despite travel, hostile crowd and fatigue.

Wilcox and ANYBODY and Everybody  else have to control the dribble into the paint when KG sits.

This teams just absolutely sucks on defense when KG sits down.   The opponets IMMEDIATELY attack the paint for easy layups or dunks.

I would play Garrent ENOUGHT to win one game probally....if he sits we an't winning.

Asik will run wild when KG sits.

Can't beat the good teams with no interior defense. (besides KG)

I just don't feel good about this matchup. All those young legs , and our best players have to ride the bench to rest.

Harden has 50 point game  if everybody stands around looking lost and tired  . ... this man is gonna wipe the floor with the C's

This is gonna be an up hill battle.

Yeah having Terry defende either Lin or Harden to start the game is just asking for us to dig an early hole for ourselves.

Many on this board are worried about the Harden match-up, and rightfully so.

Scrolling through the OP, that jumped out at me too.

Doc can be so stubborn. Jet played 48 last game, someone said, could that be correct??

If he insists on starting Jet, I'd put Rondo on Harden to begin with, and let Terry guard Lin. I would then rotate through Lee and Green to pester and harass and smother Harden all night.

C'mon Doc. Smarten up!

48 minutes inclued the 2 OTs, so 38 minutes in regulation probably.

Thanks, but still....WOW! Terry should be finishing games, but should in no way play 38 or anything close to it in 48.

Doc is far too short-sighted.

Rondo might be able to do a good job on Harden.

Harden has a size advantage on Rondo but most of his game is off the dribble 20-25 feet from the basket. Rondo could be able to bother his ball-handling with his pressure defense. Not sure Harden's scoring is versatile enough yet to punish a defender like Rondo in the mid-post and low-post areas.

Either way, it'll be interesting to see. More as a litmus test for Harden's scoring ability than anything else.

I want to see Rondo's minutes come down. He is up around 38 minutes per game.

There is no reason for Rondo to be playing so much with backcourt depth like Jason Terry, Courtney Lee and Leandro Barbosa. Doc needs to stop being so dependent on Rondo and give other guys more responsibility.

I still think Rondo is best as a 33-34mpg guy during the regular season. That is when he gives his most consistent efforts throughout whole games + prepares him amply enough while keeping him fresh enough for the playoffs down the road.

Time to bump the game thread and try to forget stuff for awhile.

You can add Terry to that list, too. Doc will run RR and Jet into the ground if he is not careful.

Honestly I expect the C's to only win one of the two games of this back-to-back, but the Spurs have lost their last two games... hopefully we can take this one and beat the Spurs tomorrow.

Prediction:  C's win 101-97.

Man, that was an ugly looking driving layup from KG. Never looked comfortable. He just looked old, really old, on that play.

Needs to take off closer to the rim. A lay in more than a driving layup.

Oh tough shot. I don't like that baseline fadeaway by Garnett against Asik.

Asik is too physically strong a post defender and has lots of length to contest the shot. He has enough quickness and uses good post positioning so it'll be difficult for KG to go around him also.

This is a game where I love having a center like Garnett.

Someone who can drag Asik out of the paint and make life very uncomfortable for Houston's team defense + Asik is a very limited offensive threat who can't create his own offense.

Only because Pau and Nash are out.

Both teams depend on aging veteran stars

Yup. Clearly neither of these teams are built for regular season dominance. We'll see what they have left come playoff time.

Until then I'm gonna enjoy watching these guys give what they can.

It is game 22. When do they start getting better?
Avery Bradley's return which should be soon.

I knew I would get that answer, but it seems I have read so many times that this team needs 20 games to get its act together, but after that, watch out. I wish Bradley was 6' 10'. He won't solve their big man problem.

Jeez, only 3:14 left and down 8. The atmosphere there feels more like the early to mid fourth quarter. Not final minutes.

This game is getting away from them. Need to show some urgency.

I love Rondo, but he is either unable or doesn't want to stay in front of his man on defense. So frustrating.

I still remember the playoff series vs the magic a few years back when anthony carter killed Rondo just because he refused to focus his defensive effort on him

Translation: someone scored a couple of easy baskets against Rondo in a game.

Translation: just about anyone being guarded by Rondo gets to the hoop at will every game

Translation: someone gets past Rondo and you're on it like white on rice, Rondo plays good defense and you're too busy looking for his next mistake to notice what happened.

You honestly believe Rondo does a good job staying in front of his man? More power to you.

I think if you watched any point guard play defense as critically as you watch Rondo you'd think they were terrible at keeping their man in front of them. Which point guards do you think rarely let their man get past them?

Deron Williams for one

Not from what I've ever seen. I don't think many people consider him to be an above average defender, but if you do more power to you.

Deron Williams is a really good defensive player.

In my experience, most people consider Deron a well above average defensive player. Only a small number think otherwise.

I do agree that Rondo is better defensively than Deron though.

Agree.   Either we become a top defensive team again, or we will be what you see now....average.   The Rox shooting 50%, 40% from 3....there's your game.

First quarter and second half were really disheartening tonight.

Surprising to see such a flat second half performance after their second quarter. It looked like they found their level in that period. Things were working well then.

I thought Asik and Parsons did a great job on Garnett and Pierce respectively tonight. Boston's offense was really limited in shot-creation without those two go-to guys. Put too much pressure on Rondo's playmaking.

I'd like to have seen more of an effort to get Jason Terry going. He could have been that necessary weapon to boost the offense today. Doc has got to get more out of Terry than just spot-up shooting. It's a waste of a dynamic offensive player.

Terrible game on so many levels for us. Bad shooting (on good looks), careless with the ball, terrible on defensive rotations in the post. That being said...really touching moment at the end with KG, Doc, Lee, and McHale. What he has gone through the past few weeks transcends basketball, and I'm glad to see our guys didn't lose sight of that. I have no idea how he's able to coach right now.

I have not read this entire thread, but here are my thoughts from tonight's debacle:

Bass is really worthless.
We need a back up PG badly.
Wilcox's defense was terrible.
Rondo's handle has been off the last two games. (Still amazing stats and assists.)
KG really struggle on bank shots from 5 feet in.

As you all mentioned though, this game became rather meaningless with KG's convo with McHale!!:-))))

Bass was really bad tonight. A non-entity in all phases of the game (offense, defense and rebounding).

Houston probably have one of the weakest PF rotations in the league. Very disappointing to see such an anonymous performance from Bass here.
