Title: Our Defence has improved statistically.
Post by: jdz101 on December 10, 2012, 04:45:38 AM
We are currently 9th in the league in Defensive Rating after spending several weeks in the 20s earlier on in the season. This is encouraging news and perhaps shows that the team is starting to get it together defensively.

And oh my lord throw a party.

We are 22nd in the league for rebounding.

There were a lot of new parts ot assimilate.  I think our D is more important than our O.   We have not been an offensive juggernaut and had late game melt downs in the fourth for a few years but our D kept us in games.

Offensively we are definitely better than the past two years. This year will be one of balance between good defense and effective offense. I dont think we will be top 3 defensively this year as there are some seriously slow-paced half court teams around. (EG Indiana, Memphis etc)

Well, there has definitely been improvement, but they need to sustain it.  If they keep playing the way they have over the last week or so, they'll get their numbers up there.

The statistic that matters is defensive efficiency.  Currently the Celtics are 11th in that category (while 14th in offensive efficiency).

Our defense is improving but it looks like we still need work on spelling and grammar.

Kinda sorta but not really. We Aussies use the British spelling which is with the C when using the noun. I try my best to change it on here so most of you guys don't nitpick me.  :P

I am prone to the odd slip however.

is there a website that tracks defensive ratings over a period of time?  It would be interesting to see it plotted on a graph.

It's important to note with the rebounding numbers that offensive rebounding drags us down so much.  By design and all that.

Last I looked we were I believe 6th in defensive rebounding percentage.

Glad the defense is coming around, I was hopeful it would just take time.

He is talking about defensive efficiency, just pulling the numbers from a different website, possibly on a different day.

http://www.teamrankings.com/nba/stat/fastbreak-points-per-game

Lets you pick a calender date for when you want the data by.

So http://www.teamrankings.com/nba/stat/defensive-efficiency is where you want to look:

Today we're 10th at 1 point per possesion, aka 100 DRTG (which is per 100).

12/1 we were 18th at 1.016

11/23 we were 27th at 1.039

11/16 we were 25th at 1.024

etc.

Good info. The 11/23 number was after 12 games, we've played 8 since. So if you assume a relatively stable number of possessions per game, in 8 games we went from 1.039 to 1.00, so our efficiency was about .942 during that time. Memphis is 1st in the league at .954, so our defense has been very good during that time. One would assume that, barring injury, we're still capable of improving on that end with more cohesiveness, the return of Bradley and even from Sully figuring things out a little better.

its obvious the past five games.  Win or Loss ... the team is jelling and smoother , with nobody standing around looking bedazzled.

No small part to Sully, Bass and Green helping KG now.
