Game Notes
The Celtics start a home and home series with the Sixers in Philly as they seek to avenge their earlier losses to them.  This is the second of 4 regular season games between these two Atlantic Division rivals.   The Celtics lost twice to the Sixers in the preseason and then again at home in their first regular season meeting.

Things have not gone exactly the way the Sixers had planned when they traded Andre Iguodala for Andrew Bynum, who is expected to miss the entire season with knee problems.    They have been inconsistent, however, just as the Celtics have been.  They are 6-4 in their last 10 games while the Celtics are 5-5 in their last 10.

Both teams played their last game vs the Timberwolves.  The Sixers lost to them 105-88 on Tuesday,  while the Celtics beat them 104-94 on Wednesday.  The  Sixers are 6-5 at home while  the Celtics are 4-4 on the road.   While the teams have identical 10-8 records, the Sixers are in 3rd place in the Atlantic while the Celtics are in 4th place by virtue of their head to head record.  They are both 3.5 games behind the Knicks, who are in first place in the division.

These teams will play each other again on Saturday in Boston.  Back to Back wins against their Atlantic division foe would be a nice start on that 8 game win streak that Rondo was talking about.  On the other hand, two losses would put them back at .500 and solidly in 4th place,  not exactly where the Celtics want to be.

Key Matchups
(http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Rondo_Rajon_bos_1112.jpg)  vs  (http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Holiday_Jrue_PHI.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Jrue Holiday
As Rondo goes, so go the Celtics.  He has said that it's time for the Celtics to go on a win streak and for them to do that, Rondo will have to lead them.  Jrue Holiday has been emerging as a very good point guard and will challenge Rondo on both ends of the court.

(http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Terry_Jason_BOS.jpg)  vs  (http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Richardson_Jason_PHI.jpg)
Jason Terry vs Jason Richardson
Both of these Jasons are capable of putting points on the board in a hurry.  This will be a battle to keep the other one from scoring while being able to score.   Richardson started the season hot from beyond the arc but was just 1-9 in his last 2 games.  Hopefully that doesn't mean that he's due for a break out game.  Jason Terry has been playing very well lately and hopefully he continues to do so.

Honorable Mention

Paul Pierce vs Evan Turner
Turner is a streaky player. When he is on, he's very tough to guard.  He has given the Celtics problems in the past.   Pierce has also been up and down, dominating one game and then struggling the next. Turner is a good defender and so this would be a good time for Jeff Green to step up.

Keys to the Game

Defense - As always, defense is key to winning. Period. The Celtics showed some signs of getting back to playing their trademark defense in their last game and against the Blazers, but they are still wildly inconsistent on defense.  It would be nice to see them put together a string of strong defensive efforts.   The offense so often feeds off the defense and when they are hustling on defense, the offense seems to flow much smoother.

Rebound- The Celtics out rebounded a very good rebounding Timberwolves team 45-41.   As with defense, they have been very inconsistent with their rebounding efforts as well.  Against the Thunder and the Wolves when they have extra motivation to win the game, they put out the extra effort on the boards and not surprisingly, get the win.   They need to put that effort out every game and when they show the effort on the boards, it seems to translate to the other areas of the game as well.

Take Care of the Ball - The Celtics seem to cruise in some games and then allow the other team into the game with a string of careless turnovers.  They have to take care of the ball and not get careless when they get a lead.

Be Aggressive
- The Celtics need to be the more aggressive team.  They have to be more aggressive going to the basket, diving for loose balls, playing defense, and grabbing rebounds.  The more aggressive team will have the momentum and will get the calls.

X-Factors
Focus on the Road
The Celtics are on the road so they need to be focused on playing the right way if they want to get this win.  They need to defend, rebound, and go to the basket.

Rondo HAS to contain Holiday. That happens and we win this game.

TP. And TP for FLFan too.

If our guards can play some D, the Sixers won't be able to drive and dish for easy layups or 3-pointers.

Go Celtics!

I hope Rondo shows interest in playing defense Today, i don't want to see pock from behind move... >:(  Green needs more touches...when he gets on the floor he needs to start shooting needs to have the aggressive playing off the bench scorer mentality...

Green needs to step up and Doc needs to give him a chance at a start to get him going.

Jet + Lee ...needs to be on fire

Pierce ...quit throwing the ball away and having your pocket picked . Shoot , No dribble.

Rondo ....play solid "D" ..the whole game.

Bass and Sully need to step up and help KG rebound the ball and play strong "D" in the paint.

If they do most of this this they should win. ;D

I'm not holding my breath.

Why on earth does Bass INSIST on bringing the ball back down every time he catches it near the rim?!?

Every single time he does this he starts off with one defender, then brings it back down long enough for anther two defenders to rotate over.  Then he has to go up against three defenders instead of one.  The only time he has ANY success is when the Defense bails him out with a foul.

Sully needs to take Bass to school.  He's strong and athletic enough to catch and go straight up - if Sullinger can do it (with his lack of athleticism) the Bass sure as hell can too.

Yeah Rondo pushed him to where help should have been and it was late.

Overall good effort, Terry and Pierce have been targeted for most of their points. Turner cutting or attacking off the dribble when Terry hasn't been in. Otherwise they've gone at Terry almost every possession he's been on the floor.

Terry has to hit some shots to avoid being a negative when he's being attacked like this.

Green impresses me with his shooting versatility.  Has an inside game, a decent fallaway and can shoot the longball.  I am unimpressed with his defense and his hands.  He is less sure-handed than he should be on the break and off the boards.  And defensively he is almost always behind the play.

At the top of my lineups I would like to see is KG and Sully together.  They seem to miss each other a lot based on the current rotations. I think Sully is getting smarter every game and I'd like to see him in the starting lineup.

C's shooting 50% and Philly 44%.  C's outrebounding Philly 33-29.  Philly has taken 12 more shots than the C's.  How is this possible? --  C's with 13 turnovers, Philly with 3.

Also I find it interesting how they're out-rebounding the team and have a better percentage shooting wise yet they're behind.

Not sure why there's whining about the D and rebounding.  Our D was terrible to start the 3rd but settled in, and was good for the 1st half.  We're crashing the glass fine.  Philly just isn't turning the ball over like we are, and that's the difference in the game.  Happy to be down 2 considering how many mistakes we've made in the 3rd.

Some credit please for the small lineup that brought them back in over the last 5 minutes.

Seemed like Green was reacting with some frustration to Doc's scolding -- nice to see some emotion from him.  Get mad Jeff -- and fly by Hawes if he's on you at the top of thee key.  Don't give Hawes a second to gather himself -- just blow by him.

KG should have taken it.  easy to say in retrospect.

This was a very tough loss and a very nice win for Philly.  We completely dominated them defensively for a quarter and could not win it.  This game made very little sense.  Turnovers obcviously killed in the first 3 quarters, but we should have won this game.  2 unbelievable misses by KG and Pierce.

I'm a broken record.  I've been saying this since before the season.  This roster doesn't make sense.

We have a great PG, 4 backup Shooting guards, two starting SF's and one great big man.  We're starting a bench big by default and one of our starter-caliber SF's is forced to come off the bench.  It doesn't make sense.  I'm not too worried about it... this team is in great position for a trade by the deadline.

Jeff Green has been terrific lately.  Definitely our 4th best player.

Really?

D looked good without KG, which is huge. Green living up to his contract seemingly.

Turnovers and tough luck killed us. CLee airballing a 3? Jet 1-8? Rondo slipping? 1-2 on free throws twice I think?

I was truly worried when our D was bad. Now it's way better and I haven't felt this good about the team since the preseason.

I feel terrible for Terry - the guy's shot has been money all season, and today when it was really needed he just couldn't buy a basket.  Every one of his shots looked on target and then just went in and out, he's gotta be feeling terrible.

As for Lee...we just can't afford to play him at the end of close games.  I like his energy but he's far too much of an offensive liability right now.

On the plus side this is what, the 3rd or 4th good game in a row by Green?  Not only did he hit some HUGE shots, but he played gave us some really solid defense and rebounding in the 4th quarter and in overtime.  I'll be thrilled of we can see that from him more often.

I actually don't mind the attempts. The first attempt actually looked really good coming out of his hands, but it was long. The second was unlucky that he slipped.

I honestly think he has to get comfortable taking those shots. Late in games, we need other options besides the Paul Pierce iso or throwing it into KG just for him to pass it off. If he's taking the reigns as "the guy", he has to take and learn to make shots with the game on the line.

You mean the 76ers were lucky to be in overtime.

I don't think Doc drew up that play. Garnett and Rondo def improvised.
I don't think he did either since he had a look of confusion like I do right now.

Rondo was playing well, had a triple double by the end of  the third, and was looking great all for everything to come up to... that.
I have so many questions right now.

They played really well in the fourth quarter. Now they need to do it consistently all four quarters and try to limit the turnovers.

Not worried at all. This is starting to look as Celtics Defense. Offense will come eventually. Today terrible offense killed us, tomorrow will be a different game. Hopefully D keeps improving and we'll be ok.

go Celtics!

I just don't see this team making any strides. Just a bunch of issues

TP.  Not an easy loss to take, but a lot of good things to take away from this game.  We've been taking care of the ball much better than last year.  If we had cut down on poor mistakes, made at least ONE of our numerous terrific open looks, or had not missed uncharacteristic free throws, we probably would have won.

man usually when u hold a team to 37% from da field u win smh we gotta get control of these turnover issues tho its some minor things dat need to be tweaked but our defense has improved slightly as of late we aint allow ova 100 points in bout a week nd a half

the overlooked point concerning the loss -- 7 missed FT's.  hit any and there's no OT.  PP was particularly odious.

JET and PP bricking the night away not helping.

impressive stat night for Rondo but I think his lack of attempts at game winning shots showed tonight, particularly on that last play.  clock awareness needs some work

smh not thrilled wit Rondo game winnin attempts but we'll get em back tomorrow hopefully Jeff Green can play like dis on a regular basis

I can understand it now because the PP iso (especially this) and the KG pass is getting a bit predictable.
I hope they learn from this and get a win tomorrow.

So is Fab Melo ready yet? I'm ready to see what this team looks like with a legitimate shot blocker.

You want a center who will miss defensive rotations every other trip down the floor, has extremely low offensive use, and will foul out of the game in 15 minutes or less?  Glad you're not our coach.

agreed.  Melo's so raw he shouldn't be expected to see the court until the 2014-2015 season

Is this some sort of heresy? I can't remember Fab playing a single minute this year. What is this missing rotations you are talking about? of all Celtics bigs, Fab is our 2nd best defender; excellent on pick and roll, blocks a ton of shots, and he takes charges.

No, it's common sense.  Don't post highlights, because that's exactly what they are - highlights that are only good plays.  If you've watched the summer league, preseason, and any of the D-league, you would quickly acknowledge that Fab is not ready for major NBA minutes.

nothing highlighty about that video. It illustrates Melo exceptional defense on pick and roll. I'm can't answer second part until he gets minutes. He has flaws definitely  like any young player. I mean Sullinger can't defend a chair if his life depended on it. But he is makes up for it  grabbing rebounds.

The video is not conclusive evidence that Melo plays exceptional defense on the pick and roll.  I see 20 seconds of good defense on ONE defensive possession against a Euro team in the pre-season.  I've seen countless possessions, on both ends of the floor, where Fab is completely lost.  He does good things, but they are overshadowed by lack of defensive awareness, substandard BB IQ, and tendency to pick up fouls.

Knicks are FAR better than Philly was last year. And they have one of the best players in the NBA.

The Knicks "OWNED" the HEAT the other night and nothing WADE or James could do to stop it either.  And that was without Mello and Amaire.
