Title: If you're the Lakers, what would you trade Gasol for?
Post by: BleedGreen1989 on December 06, 2012, 01:58:02 PM
I understand they'd like to wait until Nash gets back and see how the two fit but even then, I don't see Pau fitting their plans.

The deal I saw floated was Bargnani and Calderon for gasol which I would do in a heartbeat. Not sure why Toronto would do it as I don't think they're close to competing but I would love to see Bargnani in dantonio's system just as a fan of basketball. Plus I think Jose would be a very good back up/starter when Nash is out. He would also provide them with some cash relief.

What do you guys think?

I think bargnani stinks compared to gasol but agree he'd fit the system better which speaks to the fact they should've hired Phil Jackson who got the best out of gasol...not complaining they didn't though

I don't think their problems are personal but more coaching, brown didn't work and i can't see dantoni working either.  The broke up their twin towers with the move of bynum.

How can they improve their team to stick with san antonio, memphis, okc (am i forgetting anyone?) clippers?
Lakers are flawed right now.  Pau might have a big contract but he is a very good big man.  If they trade him and the nash experiment doesn't work they might be best to blow up team, kobe included.  Not like the bench is any good.

If I was them, I'd be trying really hard to convince Atlanta that he'd be great with Horford and that they'd be wise to give me Josh Smith before he bolts for free agency and leave them with nothing.

If they trade Pau and they come away with anyone less talented than Smith, I'd be floored.  LA's track record has been to trade garbage and get gold in return.  Would expect even better when shipping out a player like Pau

Yeah Id be trying to trade Gasol for Smith as well. If they didnt bite, I would rethink my plan and try to trade Dantoni so I could actually use the great skills Gasol brings to the team.

I actually think Iggy would be a great PF in D'Antoni's system.  He was really good in international play at PF, and I think it would translate.

The problem is, I think they could use a better shooter.

(1) Make an additional move to bring in a PF. Trade either Jordan Hill or Kosta Koufos.
(2) Antawn Jamison
(3) Ron Artest

TWolves are offering Derrick Williams and Pekovic.

The Bargs, Calderon, Kleiza offer looks best to me if I were the Fakers.

Like the other poster, though, don't know why Toronto does that, unless there was a third team involved.

Hopefully they don't get Josh Smith.

Step one: Luol Deng + Taj Gibson for Pau Gasol

Step two: Fire Mike D'Antoni and hire a defensive minded coach

I think they should stay away from Boozer and go after Taj Gibson instead.

The defensive combination of Dwight Howard and Taj Gibson would be exceptional. The quickness. The length and shot-blocking. The defensive versatility. Throw in Luol Deng on top and you would have one of the most formidable defensive frontcourts of recent times.

I looked at Taj Gibson, but here is how it would work out:

LA Trades: Gasol, Earl Clark
Bulls Trade: Deng, Gibson, Hamilton

I just don't see why Chicago would trade Gibson and Deng for Gasol. I don't think it improves them significantly, and it doesn't really improve their money situation much either.

Gasol+MWP for Deng/Boozer shaves a year off Boozer's contract, along with the skill increase.

It sounds like Danny Ferry has no interest in Pau Gasol.

I don't think LA has any chance of getting Josh Smith. I presume Atlanta is looking for a more long term solution this summer in free agency with their $40 million cap room.

Yeah, Ferry has a plan, and I don't think he deviates from it, even if a Gasol-Horford tandem sounds terrific to me.

I think LA would need to sweeten the offer a bit. Maybe a pair of first round picks and throw in Jodie Meeks to help their wing depth.

That's good. I was looking for young(er) more athletic players at both forward spots but hadn't thought of Indy, I was thinking more of Humphries and Wallace and Brooks, but that's not a great deal for Pau.

I'm a fan of Williams' potential, but I don't see LA pulling the trigger on this unless Pekovic was headed to a third team and a starting caliber 4 man was coming back.  Williams hasn't proven himself ready to be a starter on a contending team, Pek would play 10mpg, Roy is out (for good right?) and Ridnour's just a back-up PG.

If I'm the Lakers, AK-47 is the starting point of any Pau to Minny deal.

Can't see Chicago doing that - not enough quality on the wing to send out Deng without getting a good wing in return.

If I am the Lakers, I would be looking for a PF who is a good fit in a D'Antoni offense, a useful bench player, and a draft pick that could be in the late lottery.

Kind of a lateral move for LA, but I think Chicago would be much improved with Pau instead of Boozer.  It would give Chicago a second legitimate offensive go-to player.  It would also increase the height in the front court for Chicago which is something that could cause problems for their 2 main playoff competitors in the East (Miami and Boston).  Losing Deng to guard Lebron and Pierce hurts, but MWP isn't a scrub and I think the upgrade in the frontcourt is worth it.

I don't think Chicago will be in position to win it all this year with Rose presumably not 100% and their uninspired offseason efforts.  But they will be able to focus on strengthening the SG and backup SF position this offseason to put them in a much stronger position to contend in 2013-14.

Although this trade would be great for LA - I can't see Chicago giving up Deng. He's their second best player. Gasol is 32. So much of their offense goes through Boozer.

If Granger weren't injured - I think this would help both teams. But Granger is done for the year - and West and an injured Granger is simply not enough for Gasol. But TP, good idea.

I just think Deng is the best player in the trade. Given the dominance of Miami, I'm not sure I'm on board with this for Chicago.

If I'm the Lakers and D'Antoni's going to be my coach for the foreseeable future, I need some speed and shooting around Nash/Kobe/Dwight.  But I'm also looking at that sweet SF free agent crop in 2014 and wanting to keep my cap space open.

The best package that fits those criteria that I can come up with is Pau to Minny for AK-47, Ridnour and Cunningham. I get the ideal D'Antoni 4 in AK-47 (a hybrid of Diaw and Marion), a solid back-up for Nash with good shooting range and a decent back-up forward with a solid mid-range J.

The Minnesota side is a bit more problematic, but they get the guy they want in Pau and they'd still have the assets (Williams, Pekovic) to do something about their wing situation.

Granger's out for a couple months, not the year.  It's actually an overpay for Gasol.

If I were the Lakers, I would wonder if some form of Gasol and Blake to Utah for Millsap, Raja Bell, and Mo Williams would make sense, and which side would have to throw in additional assets to make it work.  It may require the Jazz to trade Al Jefferson for other useful stuff, first.

I don't think Pau Gasol has much value to Utah. They have two blue chip prospects in Favors and Kanter who need more minutes. Bringing in a 32 year old to start ahead of him is more a problem than a solution. Then there is Big Al.

I don't think Utah is a good trading partner for LA.

Maybe in a three team deal. They do have some pieces to offer and needs to fill.

It's unlikely that Toronto and Minnesota are offering the maximum they are willing to give up.  Those are probably lowball offers to see how much the Lakers are demanding.

Yeah, I do think that Pau Gasol's trade value has been tanking over the last few months. LA has hung onto Pau for too long. Shot themselves in the foot, trade value wise.

I think they are looking at a player who is a top 6-12 level talent at their respective position (just outside to well outside All-Star caliber talent) in exchange for Pau Gasol (who I still rate as a top 3 center). Plus, if they are lucky, maybe LA can nab mid-level type asset in addition to that lower tier star.

Well, I did suggest Utah may need to trade Jefferson first.  If Utah could overhaul their roster so that the net is trading out Millsap and Jefferson for Gasol and some potential long-term solutions at the guard spots, that would make sense.  Utah seems to think it can be a player for a max free agent next summer, but perhaps trading for All-Star caliber players is a better idea.

Sideways move.

The Lakers need depth as much as they need a better fit at PF.

Amare would have the same problem on the Lakers that he has on the Knicks -- he's at his best when he plays center.  Always has been.

I don't think either one of those offers are particularly low-ball. Especially the Minnesota one.
