A couple different reports coming off Yahoo. One saying N.O. was changing there name to the Pelicans?!
The New Orleans Hornets are expected to change their nickname to the Pelicans as early as the 2013-14 season, numerous sources told Yahoo! Sports. The Hornets planned to change their nickname since Tom Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints, purchased the team on April 14. Benson also owns the rights to the nickname Pelicans. Yahoo! Sports
One saying not so much.
New Orleans Hornets spokesman Greg Bensel denied a Yahoo! Sports report that owner Tom Benson has finalized plans to change the nickname of his NBA franchise from the Hornets to Pelicans. "We’re not confirming that is the name,’’ Bensel said. "This is a process that’s ongoing and still in discussions. And it will be eventually decided by the NBA.’’ New Orleans Times-Picayune
So what do you think? Are you yay on Pelicans? If not whats the best name change for New Orleans... To me it really should be the New Orleans Jazz and make Utah change their name

Both of your quotes say the same thing.
Pelicans are fine, it'll be weird for a few years but then everyone will just get used to it. Bobcats/Thunder both became completely normal after all.

I think this is a bad team name.
Bobcats and Thunder are both fine team names but the logos/colors are my issue. The Thunder in particular look like a created team in an NBA video game.
Pelicans is just awful though.
Really too bad they can't just be the Jazz.
-
Embarrassing...save that name for a rec league team in surburbia :P just awful

Whoops, thanks! fixed.

a little more detail, though mostly rehashes of other articles

Yeah I have a lot of trouble with the bobcats logo and color. It just looks amatureish.

Hate the name but doubt if they be there for long anyways

I actually like the name a lot.

Gotta problem with that?!?
-
I honestly dont get the hate. Its really not that bad of a name. Remember all the hate about the thunder when that name was revealed? now what? its seen as just another team in the NBA.
I think its a cool name. They could make the mascot an evil pelican which is something that is hard to depict but interesting to see.

I remember people griping about the Heat and Magic when they entered the league.
In a league with teams named after weather, boats, horseriding tools, bodies of water, and old-timey pants, I don't think Pelicans will stand out for long.
-
pelicans is a terrible name, lol. sounds like a generic team name from nintendo's double dribble ;D
-
If i was in charge id call them the New Orleans Big Easy.
-
Can't even give them points for originality:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Orleans_Pelicans
I think I would have preferred the New Orleans Brass.

Busted!

So for the team logo, do they change the beak in a basket?
-
So for the team logo, do they change the beak in a basket?
Don't know, but it sounds like a ready-made promotional opportunity for Popeye's as the corporate sponsor.
-
Officially my second favorite team, lol

The New Orleans Hex.
Mike

The New Orleans Hex.
Mike
Nice. Plays up the Voodoo connection (name already taken by the AFL franchise there).
Having read up a bit more on the cultural significance of the term "Krewe," I've moved that to the top of my list.

New Orleans Basketbeads tossers?
-
The logo has to be a pelican with a basketball in his huge beak like a big 'ol fish.
I really don't have an issue with any NBA team name but I think this is bad. As I said logos and colors are another story.

It had a ring to it anyways but with that history, yes that's a great choice.
I hope they at least use the old Jazz purple/yellow scheme here.

Yeah, I would think Utah would feel awkward or embarrassed about that. Armstrong, Davis, Coltrane, Gilespie, Ellington Holiday -- they all make you think Utah.
While we're on the subject, the LA Lakers is just as absurd as the Utah Jazz.
-
Hate the name but doubt if they be there for long anyways
I think the name's fine. That team has a chance to be pretty good. Anthony Davis is the real deal... he could have a Duncan-like career. I even think if he and Gordon get back soon enough from their injuries, it's not unthinkable that they could inch towards the playoff race.
-
But both the Utah Jazz and the LA Lakers have become big enough to transcend the words. When I think of the phrase "Utah Jazz" I don't think of Mormons or Music, I think of Stockton and Malone. Likewise with the Lakers--I don't think lakes, I see Shaq, Kobe, Magic, Worthy, Kareem, etc.
Also I'm pretty sure the Hornets are staying in that arena for another decade, on paper at least.
-
Should have called them the New Orleans Jambalaya, so that they could be referred to as the Jam or the Jammies, for short.

they could market a line of underwear "Pelican Briefs"

Pelicans is a great name, I really like it! Voodoo would have been a good name as well.
-
I actually think it's a pretty good name. I mean, it has to do with the state bird of Louisiana. That's perfectly in sync with what other teams do when they pick or change their nicknames.
As long as they make a sharp-looking identity as far as unis and logos go, they should be okay. What they should not do is make a logo that's cartoonish, a la the Charlotte Hornets. I love that logo but I think it only worked in Charlotte. New Orleans should do a really simple classic logo. Let's hope they don't Thunder Up on us ;D
They are also changing up the colors to navy, gold and red so they (the Bensons) have a great chance at creating a good business brand that could sell a lot over the years actually, and hopefully keep the Pelicans in New Orleans.

Something like this (ignoring the color scheme) would be pretty solid.
-
I hadn't actually seen that logo before you posted it. Here's a cleaner version:

http://news.sportslogos.net/2012/12/05/source-claims-hornets-to-become-pelicans-in-2013-14/
It's kind of cool because it reminds me of this logo:
But, but, but... Tom Benson will probably choose something completely different. We'll see. Just don't go OKC on us.
-
Tom Benson will probably choose something completely different.
sorry to mislead, gentleman, but the logo i posted is from Scott Greci at Guru Design in New Orleans. and like Goth pointed out, it won't be used because it's already out there and they would never pay the guy who made it.
it's some sweet action though. top-shelf work.

they need a cartoony pelican logo.
-
I'm fine with Pelicans, logo looks good and there are a TON of pelicans there.
In a perfect world the new orleans jazz. Utah salt lakers. Minnesota Lakers. Los Angeles eeh who cares

Pardon the profanity in the title, but it's actually a pretty informative article which has caused me to warm up to the name a bit...

Im still not a fan, but this article is hilarious. It's in white because of vulgarity in the link...
http://deadspin.com/5966336/****-you-pelicans-are-awesome-a-defense-of-the-nbas-best-new-team-name?tag=new-orleans-pelicans
here's a sample of the article, had me laughing.
It cruises above the water, its eyesight so good that it can see fish beneath the surface from 60 feet up. Then it spirals into a death dive, streaking down upon the unsuspecting prey before it knows what hit it. The last thing that fish ever sees is the light blinking out as the pelican's gaping beak closes around it, and it's swallowed—while still alive.
The pelican will eat as much as four pounds of fish per day, nearly half its body weight. Its bloodlust is insatiable. It wants to kill you and everyone you've ever cared about. Don't believe me? Here's a pelican eating baby ducklings. And because that's not cruel enough, it makes their mother watch.
They're so noble, they're pretty much deities. During times of famine, it was said, the mother pelican would draw her own blood to feed her young, and the early church quickly adopted the pelican as a symbol for the Christ. Do you see anyone worshipping a seahawk? You do not.
EDIT: and thats why you don't just hunt the thread and hit reply like a noob without checking for new posts. TP to you cassidy, and yes the article is highly recommended for hilarity :D

Looks quite majestic, if you ask me. Also, these birds are pretty ferocious.
The more I think about it, I really feel New Orleans went in the right direction with the Pelicans name.
Just. Don't. Screw. Up. The. Logo.

notfor the faint of heart...im warming up to this name.

The NBA has filed trademarks for the New Orleans Pelicans, amongst four other potential nicknames on behalf of the New Orleans Hornets NBA Limited Partnership.
The Rougarou, Mosquitos, Swamp Dogs and Bullsharks are the other nicknames that have been filed for trademark.
A swamp dog is a Cajun nickname for an alligator, while Rougarou refers to a beast from Louisiana folklore.
New Orleans will likely adopt a red, blue and gold color scheme.

I'm sick of all this pelican bashing. its a noble bird. how much fish can you fit in your mouth? had it been a peacock, I'd feel a bit different. they are shiesty birds.
-
I like the pelicans name. Im tired of every name having to be a deadly animal of some sort. its childish and boring. This is different and unique.
