Title: If there was one Celtic you would trade -- who would it be?
Post by: vjcsmoke on December 03, 2012, 04:16:40 AM
I think it would be Brandon Bass.  I think he's a solid backup player, but he's just not starter quality at the 4.  If the Cs could upgrade him, I think they should move Bass plus parts to get it done.  Cs need another big man in the 6-11 PF/C mold.  KG is good for 25-30 mpg but you don't want him playing heavy minutes.

Collins is not an offensive player, Melo's not ready, and Darko's gone.  So where is our big man depth?

Who would you trade if it were up to you, and who would you target?

Going strickly by the question ,  "ONE PERSON" , the ONE PERSON that could be traded easiest and bring what the Celtics need the most a true quality "BIG "  is Rondo.

Nobody else is worth a ONE for ONE trade to get what we need.

There are alot of guys I would trade trade BEFORE Rondo if multiple deals were considered, but going strickly by the OP's question.   Rondo is the only guy that could be traded to bring a "BIG" in as an "IMPACT PLAYER"

This is a good question.  And it might ultimately come down to DA to choose Rondo or build the team around a young quality center.

I tend to agree with Bass.  I like Bass a lot as a player, and I really appreciate his workmanlike attitude.  He's been a welcome change from Big Baby in that regard (and his accurate jumper).

Still, I do tend to think that his role is a bit redundant on the team as long as Sullinger continues to develop.  However, in order for trading Bass to be worth it, a big man who can legitimately play center would have to be coming back, so that Sully and Wilcox could man the 4 spot (with Green getting minutes here and there).

Which ever player outside of Rondo, Pierce and KG brings back the best help to win a title.

My thoughts exactly.

Whats the difference of building around a young center or a young PG? The league is not a center dominated league, actually right now I would say it is PG heavy. Either way you need more than one good player, the point is to add a player to the good player we already have.

Name the last time a team built around a PG won a title?  (or went to the finals)

NBA teams in most cases have a top level big man to win a title.

Real exceptions - Jordon's Bulls, Detroit bad boys, and a case for Lebron can be made (though I don't think they get past the Celtics if Bosh doesn't return)

Brandon Bass + anyone outside of PP, Rondo, KG, Avery + 1st rounder.

Trade them to the Warriors for David Lee. That dude is balling right now.

Jeff Green considering how overpaid he is, and therefore the assumed quality of the player we'd get back at that pay grade (well... assuming we wouldn't be getting another Jeff Green).

since moving one player on the C's won't really solve our problems, I'll approach this from which player could be moved at least cost to the team in terms of productivity (either now or projected).

I'd vote Collins.  Everyone else either has a pulse or is projected to have a pulse within the next year or two (joseph/melo)

I'd have to say Bass.

He's a nice backup PF, but not a starter, and our current backup and future starter is Sullinger.  That makes Bass the guy to move, even if only for a backup-level F/C.

The other guys aren't worth trading or are better off staying.  Lee is a nice piece that's here to stay, IMO.  We're stuck with JET (especially after the tatoo).  Outside of Rondo/Pierce/KG, that's about all we have.

I don't trade Sullinger or Bradley unless it's for an allstar (then, all bets are off).

That may be true, but in today's game it's really hard to have a good team without a good point guard.  Just look at the struggles the Lakers have had, or the struggles the Knicks had before Lin blew up (and how much better they've been with Kidd / Felton running things).

All of Phil's teams played the triangle and didn't need a PG at all.  Or a big man, really. But they had the best rebounder ever in Rodman.  He counts.

The Bad Boys had both:  a HOF PG in Isaiah Thomas and a burly (jerk, dirty player, dirty person) in Laimbeer.  Big Bill was an animal inside.  He might be an actual animal.  But it was enough to best the best frontcourt of all time two years in a row and win back to back titles.

But the "build around" concept is fundamentally flawed in an era where at least 2-3 stuperstars are necessary to get to the conference finals.  If one of them is a PG, fine, but you still need another star or two.

"who to build around" tends to depend on which star you end up getting first.  No team with one superstar is going anywhere these days (except to another team, apparently).

Just curious, but how do you decide which player a team's built around?

If I'm Ainge, literally nobody is untouchable.  Rondo is our best asset.  There's a handful of players you'd have to trade him for and a couple handfuls more you'd have to consider trading him for if they became available.

Pierce is my favorite player of the modern era... but if the right opportunity comes about, you have to trade him.

I can tell you that the one Celtic I would be least likely to trade is probably KG.  #1 - I don't think there is a ton of value for a man of his age right now.  #2 - I think he more than anyone on the team is critical to the culture of this team and he's invaluable to our transition to the next generation of Celtics.

Agree.  The way I see it, if we had to trade one our our Big 3, my list would go like this:

1.  Pierce - Jeff Green is getting starter money, so if we traded Paul Jeff could move right in.  It'd be a large drop-off, but at least we'd have a starter-caliber starter at the 3.

2.  Rondo - His inability to score consistently, along with his gambling on defense, brings up the question, "Can we really rebuild around a guy like Rajon?"  I think we can, but a lot of things have to go right.

3.  Garnett - I'll keep this short and sweet.  If we lose KG, we become quite possibly the worst defensive team in the NBA.  When he comes off the floor, it's like a lay-up line for the other team.  His defense and emotion are key to us competing year after year, and I don't think we can lose him if we want Banner 18.

All this being said, I'd prefer we keep all of them.  I'd pose this question a month after Bradley returns.  By that time, we'll have had a chance to see what this team looks like fully healthy.
