This is why I am not involved.  (I do like the drafts)

I have no clue who any of these players are.

Hope you guys (and gals if appropriate) are having fun.  See you at the next draft.

I am using my non-existent executive super powers to crown the champion to whichever team has Pele.

The man brought soccer to the U.S. and made it popular.  Heck, I never really played the game, but I had a Pele lunchbox in elementary school.

He's still THE MAN.

Ladies and Gentleman Your:

Apologies for the detail, I am bored at work and this was fun to write!

GEKKO GO’s
GK:Brad Fridel

(http://this11.com/boards/abDNVwpapd.jpg) (http://this11.com)

The timeless American legend at Keeper. A fixture in the Premier league since 1997, his infallible leadership and technical skill will serve this team extremely well. As per the “timelessness” rule, we are talking early to mid 2000’s Brad here, when he was an absolute beast in net earning him a spot on the EPL player of the year team, and recognition as one of the top Goal Keepers of the 21st Century.

DR: Djalma Santos
DL: Andres Brehme

Our men in charge of dealing with the amazing depth of wingers in this draft, and I’m happy to have them.

Djalma is one of only 4 players to participate in 4 world cups. Playing for Brazil in the fifties and sixties, he was known for his lock down defensive skills and great size, often switched to play on the opposing teams best winger. In addition to his two world cup winning squads, he also won numerous club trophies for palmeiras, where he spent the majority of his club career.

Brehme, aside from winning the 1990 World Cup for germany, is considered one of the best attacking Left backs in history. With his great pace and crossing ability, he was always looking to push the pace, which will be essential with our attacking oriented team.

Brehme’s attacking skills, 3 World Cups, and defensive skill will hopefully shore us up vs. the amazing wingers we will face on a nightly basis in this league.

Overall, I’m very happy with my outside defense, though Brehme’s focus on attacking, I’ll concede, may get us into trouble if he gets caught forward.

DC: Bobby Moore
DC: Rio Ferdinand

I’m amazingly happy to have these Two in the heart of our defense. I drafted them looking for size, consistency of form and lock down ability to do what we can against the likes of Maradona, Pele, and messi ect. While no one can outright stop these amazing attackers, these two should at least be able to slow them down.

Moore is one of the greatest defenders of all time, and were it not for the Golden Arrow up in Midfield, would likely be our captain. A stalwalt of England, he made over 90 appearances as the squads captain, and Captained the squad that won the World cup in 1966. Known as a world class defender, he certainly wont be coming forward much to attack but he should help us slow down the opposition.

Rio Is the timeless and tireless center back for ManU. At 6’2, he provides us with aerial superiority at both ends of the pitch, and his consistency at defense will only improve our backline. A member of 3 world cup squads, he rounds out our backline quite nicely.

DMC: Claude Makalele

One of the all time best true defensive midfielders, he is what I look for in a DMC for this team. He isn’t going to focus on attack, but he was known as a great defender and passer to link our backfield with the strength of our team, the attack.

This is a man who was so dominate at the defensive mid position, that some people now call it the “makalele role”. He was the heart of Real Madrid in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, and it’s no surprise that his sale to Chelsea signaled a down  period for Madrid and a upswing for Chelsea. He is was known as a nearly flawless defender, really a 5th fullback who had the passing ability to link the fullbacks to the attackers.

AMC: Alfredo di Stefano

And this is the man he will be feeding, he is our captain and will lead us to glory!

The Blond Arrow Alfredo Stefano is regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. His name graces the li ligra trophy for best player, he captained a Real Madrid squad that won the champions league trophy 5 consecutive times in the 1950’s.

Known for his great stamina, pace, technical ability, defending, and goal scoring ability, he was a two time ballon d’or winner, and lead real Madrid to 10 league titles. He remains Real Madrid’s second leading scorer of all time, and the 4th leading scorer of all time in the Spanish premier league.

He lead Real Madrid to 8 league titles, 5 consecutive champions league titles, and numerous other lower cup honors. Real Madrid currently plays in a stadium named after him. Along with another of the all time greats at center mid, we expect our attack to compete with the best ever assembled.

AMC: Micheal Platini

Alfredo’s partner in crime was one of the all time greats in his own right. He is considered one of the best pure playmakers in football history. With his dribbiling, passing and finishing skills, we expect him and Stefano to keep the oppositions defense under constant threat. He will also be our Free Kick specialist, backed up by the always easy to hate David Beckham.

Platini was part of the magic square that led France to near Glory in 3 World Cups, coming up short in the semi finals each time. He was also a ballon d’or winner in his own right.

AMR: David Beckham

The brash winger, the lightening rod. Always hated for being to pretty, and for holding on to long by purists with his move to MLS, no one can objectively deny that Beckham was one of the greatest players of his generation in the 90’s and early 2000’s, perhaps culminating in his amazing 1999 season where he took ManU to a triple crown victory of EPL, FA Cup and Champions League. At the height of his playing ability from 97-2002, Beckham led Manu to Three consecutive league titles.

Known for his pace on the wing and crossing ability, Beckham was also a capable finisher. I think Platini is better at freekicks, dispite the movie, but we’ll give Beckham the corners.

AML: Ryan Giggs

Another huge threat to cross from the wing after leaving his defender in the dust (can you tell our strategy is to abuse that triangle by feeding them from the wings yet?) Gigg’s left foot has been declared a national treasure. The Welshman is known for his tireless running, ball control and dribbling abilities, and of course the amazing crosses his left foot produces at the end of his runs.

HE is also a model of consistency, being a fixture in the ManU starting 11 for over a 20 years. His unbroken two decades of service for one of the World’s top clubs has led him to be a part of 12 EPL championships, 3 Champions league winners, and numerous lower cups. He’s been Player of the year 6 times in the EPL and was named to the Champions League team of the decade.

ST: Romario

The man at the head of our devastating attack needed to be a World Class Striker, and so he is. While certainly a step below some of the all time greats ala pele, Romario is not one to be dismissed lightly. He is one of the elite few strikers with not only 1,000 Goals to his name but also a World Cup Golden Ball.

A absolute fiend with his dribbling skills and finishing, he helped lead Brazil to it’s record 5th World Cup in 1994. He has won numerous club titles and individual honors, but only one Fifa Player of the year title, due to his reluctance to leave Brazil during his prime.

Sub: Gareath Bale

A pick I know some consider a reach, but I am of the opinion that Bale will be one of this generations superstars. At only age 23, the Welshman has already shown that his absolutely freakish pace on the wing and, to quote his ex coach “Brazilian like crossing ability” has resulted in Spurs return to relevance. His amazing games vs. Inter Milan at the age of 21 put everyone (especially marcon, who he left for dead dispite being on of today’s best fullbacks) on notice that he is going to be a force to be reckoned with.

He has a amazing work ethic and is praised by one and all for being a humble, team orenited player despite his great skill. Learning behind his idol and fellow Welshman Ryan Giggs, Bale will come off the bench for us at both Left Full back and Left Wing. His pacey attacking skills will fit right in with our terrorizing triangle.

Coach: Ottmar Hitzfeld

He's a good coach, ive gone on to long already.

Wow, it's so annoying how you take one comment Maradaona made when he was 22 years old  (before his prime and before he become a legend magico can only dream about) and try to convince averyone like it's some kinda of proof to his greatness. There is no way he's even in top 50, if it wasn't for you no one would have taken him at all. Many great players made stupid comments, Pele is a master of it. He said many stupid things over the years. So what?

Well I really appreciatte the fact that my comments are anoying to you.

And BTW I am only talking about what i saw
NONE player picked in my team, other than Lev Yashin and Pele (no need of explanatiuon with those 2) (and I saw a lot of footage as bad as it was of them too). is a player i havent seen and admire LIVE

And beleive me I am not going to sell Magico here
I dont need too
Do you ever saw francescoli and Valderrama in their prime
Redondo?
I am sure you do

I will live with them

Do you ever see and appreciatte the level of soccer Radames is playing right now (arguably better than Messi)

He will never get a call for botin de Oro just beacuse hes not in Barcelona or Real
That makes him a lesser player????

Do you ever saw laudrup before Barcelona and Madrid, probably he was better BEFORE those teams, I wanted because Denmark not because his game in spain

I am not sure what are you trying to sell.
Maradona wasnt 22 was a little older when he said that, and he admires Magico,  btw 5 years ago Maradona keep his word on Magico being one of the best 10 he ever saw
Being polite maybe, being gentle Maybe, but I am pretty sure Maradona will not ever going to say that about Sanchez and they were contemporary too.

I am starting to feel your comments a little direct and offensive. but I will leave the conversation there

Did I said something about other players on your team? No. I was talking about that Maradona quote from 1982 you are mentioning all the time about being better than him as if it really means something. Since then, even at his best, he did nothing more than playing for small spanish ream and even those who saw him play all the time don't cpmpare him with legends like Maradona.

Pele once said that Nii Lamptey will be his heir, that Nick Barmby would be as good as Zidane, Maldini and El Phenomenon Ronaldo and names Saviola as one of 125 best players ever. I should have taken them then, if Pele said so, it must be true.

well to be honest
Pele and Maradona both
knows a little more game than me

The fact that they were great players, doesn't mean that they are great at judging potential/coaching/predictions. Both failed at that many times over the years, especially Pele.

well thats a total true
but they certanly watched more soccer than me over the years

wonder how i will do as coach from time to time I always thinked i can be a pretty decent one.. :)

but again I will say I only miss not being able to pick Higuita because Yashin was available.
Higuita would have been the perfect fit for my team in the arc

and using well the time I will say what i think about some players in your team:

Iker Casillas, the best right now. And the reason why Real madris is still anything.I really admire him as a Madridista and i am a full barcelona fan

Giacinto Facchetti, never saw him so I cant say anything about him, hes supposed to be good attacking too but that will leave some holes right?

Alessandro Nesta, I love him but, there are better players than him for sure, hes somehow overrated because his Milan titles, and international play, well at least i can say Baresi is better ;)

Matthias Sammer, effective, very effective, still not my type of player.

Javier Zanetti, I am still a Zanetti fan.

Lothar Matthäus (c), great player, great player.

Xavi, hes probably better than Messi, yes I said that

Zico, I think hes overrated, really

 Maradona, well

Roberto Baggio, I used to love him until he started to be the man in the cup where he missed the penalty seems like that was a carrer changer. ( never win anything big) thing maybe as much as i know what he did in Italy. ( i know the penalty thing is a little cliche but i really think that changed his carrer)

 Ferenc Puskas, never saw him

Karl Heinz Rummenigge, pretty much the German version of Hugo Sanchez

In suma, your team is MIDFIELD all the way

I am not sure if the deffense will be able to hold because none of your midfielders play a different posesion other than maybe mathaus but even with his anoying pressure Xavi wont give you enough D on the midfield.

To be honest all, Maradona, Mathaus, Zico, Xavi and Baggio plays basically the same position with different approaches.
I am not sure if that will work

]MICHAEL LAUDRUP
SÓCRATES OLIVEIRA
DENIS LAW
ROY KEANE

I am not a fan of english players so i will say I LOVE LAUDRUP with all my heart
and I think he can runa  team by himself
Socrates IS a great complimment to him the only one that can be good like him is redondo, gullit, and maybe batista

great pick there

RUUD VAN NISTELROOY
DAVID VILLA

Nice couple of contemporary goal seekers
I like Rudd over david
and probably Hugo have something over him too

I don't agree with many things you said. Here's a brief overview of my team.

Casillas - will be remembered as top10 ever after riteremt I have no doubt. Already broke so many records, saved Madrid so many times.. Was lucky to get him so late.

Facchetti was great both defensively and offensively. Having both him and Zanetti as full backs is a big plus as they both can do it all on the flanks. Two legendery Inter captains.

Nesta is underrated if anything. I think you haven't seem enough. I'm a Milan fan and I saw him play countless times and he's truly on of the best CB's ever. Very intelligent, great positioning, marking, tackling, pace, leadership. Was Lazio's captain at a very young age (led them to the title) and deservingly so. If not for the injuries he would have been be remembered as even greater. Even last season, when he was way past his prime you could see how quality he was in the important games.

Matthias Sammer was an awesome atacking libero, only second to Beckenbauer. His runs forward was perfectly timed, he could score, could play as a defender an entire game, sacrificed his all for the team and had few very amazing season. He was the best player in UERO 1996 by far (which Germany won) and on that Dortmund team that won Champions league. Not many defenders can say that and not many defenders won the golden ball like he did.

Matthäus - the best defensive midfielder ever, a perfect leader for my team. Could play equally well in defense too, could man mark anyone. No brainer choice.

Xavi - the best passer I've ever seen and an underrated player. Not always getting all the recognition but IMO he's the most important player in this amazing Barca team. His football IQ is amazing.

Zico One of the best midfield scorers ever with great vision, passing lethal shot, dribbling, finishing and free kicks. Was the best player in the world at his prime in early 80's. Can easily play a more advanced role.

Roberto Baggio - exceptional talented, regarded by many as the most talented Italian ever. Could do it all with the ball, very versatile. Was unlucky to miss a penalty in WC final but he was the reason why Italy was there in the first place. He carried that team and won all the important individual awards at that time and a consensus in the early 90's.

Ferenc Puskas - True scorer, scored 616 in 620 games during his career, led the legendary and revolutionary Hungarian team of the 50's (scored 84 goals in 85 games for them), only his injury prevented them winning it all in 1954. Moved to Real Madrid when he was 31 but still scored 242 goals for them and was key player in one of the best teams ever build - Real Madrid of early 60's.

Karl Heinz Rummenigge a great sub to have but I don't consider him as such since he could easily be in many teams on this draft. A very prolific scorer and finisher, won it all in europe, twice europe's best player.

And of course Maradona. We can argue who was better he or Pele forever but for me Maradonas prime (1984-91) was better than anuone else prime. A truly megical player, there is nothing he couldn't do with ball. Took the Argentinian team by himself to win the 1986 World Cup, and carried them to another final 4 years later. Took Napoli, a relatively small team then and made them the best team in Italy, the toughest european league by far back them with empires like Juve, Inter and Milan unable to do nothing.

My team is far from being just a midfield. All in all, I think I have one of the most versatile and balanced teams in this draft with many players capable of playing several roles and different schemes. I can easily play with 3 CB's adding Matthäus to Sammer and Nesta with the first two able to go forward very well (both played as mids too). Will have no problems playing a narrow style too since both fullback can close the flanks perfectly and support the attack. With Baggio and Puskas capable of playing any role in the atcack I can have a very lethal front line with Baggio, Puskas, Maradona behind Rummenigge - all can score in different ways that will be very hard to guard, especailly when supported by great passers I have. Expect them to keep possession at least 70% of the time.

When things will become tough, Maradona will be there to do his magic.

I should have taken them then, if Pele said so, it must be true.

p.s. to this one Saviola was better than his carrer at barcelona.

He never lived up to his hype. He become nothing specail at all. Him being in the 125 best ever by Pele is a joke. I can think of many other players who deserve to be there instead of him.

PETER SCHMEICHEL

I had a better choice but i understand the pick

When Schmeichel joined Man U, they hadn't won a championship in 25 years. Denmark won the EURO92 largely thanks to Peter the Great. I have never seen a better goalkeeper. Besides great goalkeeping, he was really good at throwing the ball to his midfielders and attackers, who would then get many scoring chances because of the good pass Schmeichel had made.

GIUSEPPE BERGOMI
CARLES PUYOL
PAOLO MALDINI
DIDIER DESCHAMPS
My only worry is that you have the best centrals and you will lack a little speed on one rail, but maldini will keep the other one covered
over all your central deffense is amazing.

Actually, I play a 3-4-3, so Deschamps is in midfield, although defensively. Keane covers the other side. I feel my defenders are good enough that I can stay with a three-player line at the back. Also, Maldini was just an outstanding player defensively, almost always getting away with a good pass and almost never throwing the ball away. Bergomi was just plain tough and the perfect compliment to Maldini. Puyol gives me a great central defender, who can also be effective in runs forward, on corners, et cetera.
Laudrup (who I think is the best offensive player and most underrated I've followed at close hand) and Socrates (who was great with either foot and a workhorse to boot, besides being 6'4" and strong as an ox) round out my offensive midfield nicely.

Law is Scottish and Keano's Irish, so my only true Englishman is Robson as my 12th man  ;)

RUUD VAN NISTELROOY
DAVID VILLA
Nice couple of contemporary goal seekers
I like Rudd over david
and probably Hugo have something over him too

Law, Ruud and Villa combine for 118 international goals in just 210 matches and 706 goals in 1377 club matches. I think that's a fairly dangerous trio at the front. With Laudrup setting them up, they will score a lot of goals. Also, Villa is really good with both feet so being on the left wing should not be a problem for him.

All in all, I'm quite satisfied with my team, I think I got my hands on *most* of the players I had been hoping for.

I was always a bit disturbed by how Roberto Baggio was passed around and let go by top teams. Played at Juve for five years but it was one of the weaker recent periods for the club as they struggled to win a title while he was there. Finally won once when Baggio missed half the season. Then sold by Juventus just before their most successful periods under Lippi. Had a minimal role at AC Milan. Then moved to Inter Milan and again had only a small role in the team.

I loved Baggio at Brescia later in his career. They built the team around him and catered to his strengths. I thought that was a great period for him.

I was always a bit disturbed at how Roberto Baggio failed to fit into big teams (title-winning teams). I've always suspected that Baggio was too difficult to get the best out of while still doing what is right for the rest of the team's players and the team overall.

He is a player I find difficult to rate. Exceptional individual talent but a lack of team success.

I loved the combination of Maradona, Zico and Puskas. I thought that was an incredibly difficult front trio to defend against because all three of them are so good at moving between the lines ... at dragging defenders out of their preferred positions and picking the ball up in areas in between defense and midfield. All exceptionally gifted passers/playmakers and strong goal-scorers. I thought that trio was a nightmare to defend against. One of the best attacks in the fantasy league.

I thought adding Roberto Baggio to that trio was maybe one player too many. Too similar to your other attacker's strengths. Not enough space for everyone to operate. Everybody wants the same areas of the pitch to operate in. I thought maybe a different type of attacker would have been a better fit. Someone in the wide areas of the pitch.

Not sure how well that would work with Baggio being added to those three. Maybe it would work well. Maybe it doesn't.

I wonder if Rumminegge is a better option than Baggio. He was so well-rounded and capable of playing anywhere across the front-line. Great team player. Does what was needed of him. Maybe he'd tie things together better than Baggio would despite not being quite as individually brilliant as Baggio was.

The Immortals:

Iker Casillas, Giacinto Facchetti, Alessandro Nesta, Matthias Sammer, Javier Zanetti, Lothar Matthäus (c), Xavi, Zico, Maradona, Roberto Baggio, Ferenc Puskas, Karl Heinz Rummenigge

Coach:Rinus Michels

I think this is an incredible team. I love the defense. I love the midfield play. I love the attack. Very good goal-keeper. Very good manager. It has everything. A truly great all-around team.

I haven't looked at everyone's team yet but this is one that kept catching my eye throughout the draft and I love how it ended up.

Defense

I thought Facchetti was a great pick. One of the key players on those great Inter teams. Strong defensively with good size and quickness combined with excellent attacking play. He was my top rated left back in the draft.

I thought Nesta was a great defensive player. Excellent reading of the game. Great tackler. Great at interceptions. Very strong marker. A leader on the back-line. I thought Maldini's career (when he was starting to slow down) got a huge boost when Nesta joined. And even more recently, Thiago Silva, I thought Silva really benefited from getting to learn from Nesta while adapting to European football. A true leader at the back.

Solid defender at taking the ball out of the back but not a great one. Probably showed more passing skills at Lazio under Sven than he did at Milan. I also think Nesta gets a boost in this format from being considered at his peak rather than as the injury-prone player he was. If it was longevity / whole of career, I would rate him a bit lower due to all the interruptions to his career that injuries caused.

I love Sammer. I half-thought about putting him and Beckenbauer together. I love Sammer + Rinus Michaels (I worry a bit about Mourinho in this regard). I think that is a great combination. I think Sammer's passing and vision is a great complement to Nesta's tough defensive work. Great combination. To pick Sammer up so late in the draft was a great piece of business.

Javier Zanetti is a player I am lukewarm on. Good player. The opposite of Nesta's case, a player who was incredibly durable and would rate higher on the whole career rather than his peak. More of a midfielder than a right back but he was a fine right back (same with me with Neeskens).

I thought that right back spot was the most difficult in the draft. There were a couple of players I really liked but they went early and I was lukewarm on most of the rest. Why I drafted Neeskens (a central midfielder) and played him there instead of picking an out and out right back. I was also very interested in Steven Gerrard as a RB. I was disappointed when he got picked.

Midfield

I love Lothar Matthaus. A great box-to-box type midfielder who could function as an advanced midfielder or as a defensive midfielder.

I thought that holding midfielder spot was another tricky one in this draft. You want someone good on the ball who can keep the team-based attack going + someone with enough ball-winning skills and defensive discipline to keep your team's shape defensively. Finding someone who can do both was very tricky. I would've loved to have seen Matthaus have a bit more freedom going forward but I understand picking him as a holding midfielder and think he is a great option there.

Xavi is another brilliant passer to go along with Puskas, Maradona and Zico. That interplay between those players and then Matthaus filling hols is incredible. Exceptional. I am completely and wholly in love with that combination of talent.

Attack

I talked a bit about the attack just above. Some concerns about how Roberto Baggio fits in but I love everything else. I thought this was one of the best attacks in the fantasy league led by Puskas, Maradona and Zico.

I particularly loved how they pulled defenders out of their comfort zones and made themselves (individually and collective) extremely difficult for opponents to pick up defensively. Combined that with the magnificent array of passing and strong goal-scoring skills and they are an absolute nightmare to play against.

Overall

This is an incredible team. Like I said earlier, I haven't looked at every squad yet but this is one that stood out to me all throughout the draft and is definitely a favourite of mine.

Amazing team.

12th maen: Jorge "Magico" Gonzales

a.k.a. the only 12th man better than the No.1  pick in this draft
I had never heard of Magico prior to this draft.

I wish I had seen him play. His highlights packages on youtube are really impressive.

yes, he was that good
sadly he never cared about it
just a bohemian man who cares more about party and nonsleep and even without sleeping was better than the other 21 there.
sad because he could have been there.............

Ladies and Gentleman Your:

Apologies for the detail, I am bored at work and this was fun to write!

GEKKO GO’s

(http://this11.com/boards/abDNVwpapd.jpg) (http://this11.com)

GK:Brad Fridel

The first thing that jumps out to me is David Beckham.

I like Becks but I don't think he adds much to your specific team.

You have three central players in Makelele, Platini and Di Stefano. Extremely good in that area of the pitch. I think you needed a more dynamic wide player than Beckham to complement them. Beckham is too slow. He can't dribble. He can't go past players.

I think Giggs is great for your team because he possesses those qualities on the left and is a very nice link as a wide forward between your strength in central midfield and your sole striker.

I thought Beckham's best play as come as either (1) a central midfielder in a three man midfield, or, (2) as a right midfielder in a 4-4-2 when asked to tuck inside and provide support for his two central midfielders in order to give his left wing (Giggsy) freedom to push forward (which Beckham did so well in Europe for Man Utd).  In those roles, I thought Beckham really helped provide great balance for his team with his work rate and passing.

In your squad, I think you have such incredible strength and balance in central midfield that you really don't need any assistance from your wide midfielders like a 4-4-2 requires and instead require more dynamic attacking play. The ability go past defenders and create.

The other big part of his game is set-piece mastery but you already have Platini there who was an incredible set-piece taker so that is unneeded also.

Another part of Beckham's game that was really good was his interplay with his right back. He provided lots of defensive work to aid his full back + was really good with the combination play in releasing his full-back in overlapping runs but from what I have read about Djalma Santos it sounds like he was more of a defense-first full-back than an attacking wing back.

So for me, I like Beckham as an individual player and actually have no problem with him being selected in this fantasy league ... but I don't think he suits your team that well.

Keeper

I don't think Brad Friedel belongs in this fantasy league. A very good keeper but not an All-Time great.

Defense

Bobby Moore is an excellent starting. One of finest center backs available. Excellent defensive qualities and good at taking the ball out from the back.

Rio Ferdinand is a very good partner. One of the best center backs in the world over the last 10-15 years. Very good defensive qualities and good passing skills. I think his reputation varies quite a bit from place to place but I have always rated him very highly.

Djalma Santos sounds like a really good right back. A terrific defender. Solid going forward.

Andres Brehme was an excellent attacking full back. Excellent crosser of the ball. Good defensively. I think he'll provide brilliant wide play on the left wing alongside Ryan Giggs. I think I had him around 5th or 6th on left back choices. I think you got him pretty late in the draft so he was great value.

Midfield

I am Chelsea fan so I am big Makelele booster. A terrific ball-winner. Excellent at plugging holes and maintaining his team's shape. Filling for full backs who go forward. Dropping back when a defender brings it out from the back. Anything defensive, Makelele was top-class. Limited in the attacking sense but a functional short-passer who moved the ball forward quickly.

Di Stefano and Platini is an absolutely incredible attacking midfield duo and both can chip in with a large number of goals. They are the fulcrum of your team and as good as any team's in this fantasy league. An excellent starting point to build the rest of your squad around.

Di Stefano was a guy I overlooked in the draft. I kept thinking of him as a forward and was uncomfortable with the idea of him there (1950s, good but not great pace, I worried about how he'd translate to more modern football as a forward - Puskas too) but after thinking about him more as an attacking midfielder, I am absolutely in love with him. I can't think of a more perfect attacking central midfielder. A great leader and playmaker who can run/organize your entire team.

I would actually play Di Stefano a little deeper in midfield (in a box-to-box type role so he roam all over the pitch) to give Makelele a bit more protection and let Platini be the furthest forward since he has the least defensive quality. Di Stefano more well-rounded. I think your back 5 is a bit exposed at present.

I talked about Beckham above. I don't think he fits in well.

Ryan Giggs is one of those players who I feel takes a hit in this fantasy setup because we consider players at their peak rather than their whole career. Giggs' ability to play at the top with Man Utd for around 20 years and win everything that he has won is his biggest selling point / accomplishment ... but there was never really a time in those 20 years where you could say Giggs was the best player at Man Utd. It was always someone else.

Giggs never really had a clear peak where he destroyed everyone as you would expect with a player with his incredible individual talent. As a result, Giggs was a player I had a tough time rating in this fantasy league (like I had with Roberto Baggio albeit for different reasons).

It's shame Giggs never moved abroad. Every big European team wanted him. I would have loved to have seen what he could have done in a more advanced wing role (wing forward type role) in his prime.

Striker

Romario is a very good center forward. I like strikers who can dribble and beat defenders. Very good goal-scorer.

I generally prefer big strikers when playing with only one up front. If it's a small guy, I think you need to get more midfielders up around him to play into his feet. I don't think Beckham fits that style of play. I do think Giggs does. And Platini and Di Stefano obviously do. I'd feel better if Becks was replaced by more of a advanced midfielder on the right balance wise.

I think I had Romario around 7th-10th on my list of center forwards. Very good player.

Okay, so I had two rules when I began the draft

(1) Do not pick any defenders for the first few rounds [broke it in the first round with Beckenbauer]
(2) Do not pick any strikers early because the depth there is incredible [broke it in the second round with Van Basten]

Some Information On The Players

Beckenbauer is the leader and captain. I think his team-work, determination and winning ways provide the perfect type of leadership for my team.

Originally, I had planned on coupling Neeskens and Rijkaard as the backbone of my midfield with Didi freed to play a little more advanced. At the tip of a three man midfield with three attackers further forward. A 4-3-3. I changed that to pick Rivelino just because I wanted more "fantasy" in my fantasy team. Ended up with Neeskens anyway as my right back.

A little uncomfortable with Cristiano Ronaldo's selfishness but I suppose sometimes it's good to have someone selfish who'll look for the killer blow at all times. I would have liked more team-work there but sometimes that can a good quality too as well as a negative.
other than that i like the squad too very much
I always thought on Brehme and Branco as the same player
of different continents and being a fan of both.

    • Striker = Marco Van Basten. I picked Van Basten because he is a big striker with good quickness, had excellent technique and an excellent goal-scoring record. Lots of individual and team accomplishments at Ajax and AC Milan. Plus won the European Championship with Holland. A three time winner of the Ballon D'Or.
    • Attacking Midfielder = Ruud Gullit. A big strong powerful attacking midfielder. Very well rounded football capable of playing anywhere on the pitch. Best as an attacking midfielder but can play in wide areas, deeper in midfield and even played sweeper for Chelsea. Lots of physical power / athleticism. Great partnership with Van Basten at AC Milan. Ballon D'Or winner.
    • Attacking Midfielder = Cristiano Ronaldo. I picked Ronaldo for his incredible goal-scoring record. I wanted more goals from midfield. Excellent dribbler and trickery in wide areas. Provides real width. Big lad too, physical presence. Lethal in counter attack. Gives me three big attackers in Van Basten, Gullit and C.Ronaldo who can put a lot of pressure technically and physically on opposition. Ronaldo has won everything at an individual (Ballon D'Or) and club level (Champions League winner + runner up, three time Premier League winner, FA Cup, La Liga, Copa del Rey).
    • Attacking Midfield = Rivelino. Since this is a fantasy team, I decided I wanted more flair and creativity in my team. Trickery. Excitement. Clever interplay. Exciting attackers. So I decided for a third attacking midfield instead of a third central midfielder as I had originally planned and I went with Rivelino who I felt was the best playmaker / dribbler available at the time.
    • Central Midfield = Didi. Greatest playmaker of all-time from central midfield (not out of advanced midfiedlers although Didi can play there as well). Golden ball winner. Was the orchestrator behind the 1958 World Cup winning Brazilian team and an integral member of the 1962 World Cup winning team.
    • Central Midfield / Defensive Midfield = Frank Rijkaard. The best defensive midfielder of all time although probably more of a box-to-box midfielder than an out and out holding midfielder. Very good center back also. Excellent defensive qualities and really good going forward. Scores a lot of goals with surging runs from deep midfield. Good passer. Another big lad at 6 foot 3 and again has a previous partnership with Van Basten and Gullit at both club and national team levels. Lots of success. Third place Ballon D'Or twice.
    • Right back = Johan Neeskens. Typically a central midfielder (box-to-box) but one of the most well-rounded players ever to play and can succeed in just about any position. Played at right back in 1971 for Ajax when they won their first European Cup (Champs League) before moving to central midfield full time. Part of that great three-peat European Cup Ajax team that dominated Europe in the early 1970s and a Holland team that twice came runners-up in the World Cup in 1974 (to Beckenbauer) and in 1978 (to Kempes). Was a member of the 1974 World Cup All-Star team and second leading scorer with 5 goals.
    • Left Back = Ruud Krol. can play anywhere across the backline. Played left back for those great early 1970s Ajax teams before moving to center back later in his career as he got older. A terrific passer from the back. Good defensive qualities. Excellent runs down the left wing.
    • Center Back = Elías Figueroa. I never saw him play and limited footage available on the internet so I can only go on reputation and his reputation is immense. Regarded as the best player ever player from Chile, the best defender ever from South America and one of the greatest defenders of All-Time. Won the South American Football of the Year award for three years straight while playing in Brazil in a time when many of the top players stayed in Brazil / South America. Won player of the year honours twice in Uruguay, twice in Brazil and twice in Chile. Became the captain of every team he joined. Big physical presence. Pele called him the "finest central defender in the history of football in the Americas". César Luis Menotti (great Argentian coach who won world cup in 1978) called him "Is the best defender I've ever seen in my life" and he coached Passarella (the other main contender for best South American CB). Beckenbauer called him the best defender in the world + said he (himself) was the European-Figueroa. Named the best defender at the 1974 World Cup in a World Cup that included great all-time defenders like Beckenbauer, Facchetti and Berti Vogts (plus my Ruud Krol who was also on the World Cup Dream Team with Figueroa and Beckenbauer). An excellent ball-winner (tackler, interceptor) who had a great aerial presence. Read the game extremely well. And was a very good passer out of the back. Made surging runs out of the defense bringing the ball forward for quick attacks.
    • Center Back / Libero = Franz Beckenbauer = the greatest defender of All-Time and regularly talked about amongst the top 4-6 footballers of All-Time in that next group after Pele, Maradona and Cruyff. A very good defensive player with excellent attacking qualities. Having Beckenbauer is like having an extra attacker. A deep lying playmaker who can run the game from the defense in the same way an Andrea Pirlo runs Juventus / Italy a little further up the field. Two time winner of the Ballon D'Or. One of the greatest winners of all-time who won absolutely everything there was to win = World Cup winner (plus a 2nd place and 3rd place finish), European Championship winner and runner-up, three European Cups, the Cup Winners Cup, five domestic leagues and four cups in Germany and more in the US.
    • Goalkeeper = Gianluigi Buffon = the best keeper of his era. Now regularly talked about as the best Italian keeper ever ahead of Dino Zoff. Arguably the second best keeper of All-Time. Second place in the Ballon D'Or in 2006. Key leader in Italy's World Cup win in 2006. Has won almost everything at a club level with Juventus although has yet to win the Champions League (runner up medal).
    • Substitute = Mario Kempes. Golden Ball winner, Golden Boot and World Cup winner of the 1978 World Cup. A match winning / tournament winning performance against Holland to secure the World Cup for Argentina. A very good goal-scorer who was prolific in Argentina and Spain. He scored lots of goals from outside the box. Excellent change of pace dribbler who was very good at going past people. Good size and quickness. Can play up front on his own or alongside someone. I think his qualities would work well alongside Van Basten or replacing Van Basten.

I dont know much abrout Kroll

I love the rest of your team other than the Cristina Ronalda pick.
I probabaly sit him to shut his ego off, put Mario Kempes in and call it a day.

Great squad lead by a great player.

IMHO Casillas is up there wiht Bufon

I still surprised nobody picks Rinat Dasaev, the only one matched with Yashin before this 2

Edgar, I forgive you for the Magico pick  ;) But, seriously? Yashin, Casillas and Buffon ahead of Schmeichel? Man, you're crazy  ;D

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvZf5Zp-27Y

10 championships (4 in Denmark, 5 in England along with three FA Cups, one championship in Portugal), twice voted best goalkeeper in the world, European Champion 1992, CL Champion 1999, winning the treble (Premier League, FA Cup) with MUFC that same year.

Schmeichel should, in my honest but also very humble opinion, be the GK that everyone wants to pick first when making a fantasy team.

I mean, I liked Dasaev, too, but what about someone like Pfaff? Grobbelaar? van der Sar? Neuer? I could go on naming people. I think they're up there, too but not up where Peter Schmeichel is.

;D For me not picking Magico is like for you not picking Laudrup :D

And yes I admire Schmeichel a LOT
I will concede to put him there where casillas is
    Van der sar very close
Paff was a little overrated because of his style buyt it was pretty enjoyable to see him play just like Higuita what great characters

I wonder if Rumminegge is a better option than Baggio. He was so well-rounded and capable of playing anywhere across the front-line. Great team player. Does what was needed of him. Maybe he'd tie things together better than Baggio would despite not being quite as individually brilliant as Baggio was.
So was Baggio. People forget but Baggio also sometimes played as winger and striker during his career and had no problem perfoming well in every attacking position. So I feel very comfortable with a versatile player like him in the mix. Puskas could also play wide, especailly on the left side so I have many different options depending on which team I have to face. Adding a fantastic striker like Rumminege (2 time Ballon d'Or winner) was an icing on the cake, he fits perfectly with the others on my team. Even though he was picked late, I don't consider him as a sub, everyone of the 12 is starting material.

    My team

I think you got to get Kaka and Garrincha further up the pitch. I think Kaka needs to be just in behind the main striker. I don't think he's a midfielder. More of a deep lying forward. And Garrincha is more of a wing forward than a midfielder and too special a creative force not to be in a more advanced position.

I would move Falcao back deeper alongside Ballack and Vieira in a three man midfield.

I would love to get a left winger in there to balance Garrincha on the right. To really stretch the opposing team's defense out.

I don't see how you can do that without sacrificing Kaka or one of your central midfielders though. So maybe it's best not to do that and just stick with a front three of Kaka, Muller and Garrincha with Kaka and Muller in more central positions. Kaka likes to float and Garrincha is talented enough to beat anyone on the wing (best winger in the draft).

I think moving Mario Gomez for a central defender is a good move. I don't think Gomez belongs in this fantasy league. Very overrated player in my opinion. Not a fan. I consider him one of the weak points in club football with Bayern and in International football with Germany. He just doesn't do enough to help either team or to be considered a top class striker. Not a fan.

Or, maybe just play a three man defense and swap Gomez for a left winger. Very attacking lineup (3-3-3-1). Or maybe sacrifice Ballack or Vieira for that extra defender and use Gomez to land a winger. Play a 4-2-3-1 with wing forwards. I really like that three man midfield though. Tough trio to play against. I think that 4-2-3-1 is the best formation for your team if you move Gomez.

The Garrincha + Muller combination is one of my favourites in the fantasy league. One of the greatest goal-poachers ever combined with one of the greatest creators on the wing ever. I think the interplay between those two guys would be really special.

Kaka + Muller would work extremely well together too.
