Title: I like Bass. Shoot me.
Post by: tgreanier on November 23, 2012, 10:03:35 PM
I do not understand why getting rid of Bass is so high on people's Christmas list. I mean, sure, if we can get someone like Gortat, but I don't see that happening. Bass is imperfect, but I love the guy's intensity. He played very well tonight, regardless of the low point total. He has played well overall this season. I like him in our lineup. He has some younger legs, some decent width and strength and a nice shot when he let's it come.

Better players out there? Absolutely, but Bass is filling the Leon Powe role nicely I think...perhaps even better.

I like the roll he plays...It kinda gets under my skin that he has no post up game...some one with that athletic body frame...with out a post move...but he makes up for what he lacks...with his effort he even had a big play where he fought for...that offensive rebound..and we ended up getting it...I like the guy...

I agree with you, bro. Bass is among the hardest working players in the league, not just the team. He is the type of guy who goes on the court, does what he is asked to do, and then comes back. Some times, shots just don't fall, doesn't mean he is awful.

I have loved Bass from the beginning and despite becoming frustrated from time to time due to him missing shots, he is a need for this team, not a bonus. We need him.

Just wondering. If you had to see one traded, who would it be. Sully or Bass?

For me it would be Bass.

I like Bass, but I like him better coming off the bench. He also hurts us because he's our second best big that can't guard the paint.

I think the big reason people want to trade him is his contract is nice, and teams would like him. Also with PP's only backup being Green it doesn't make sense to trade Green over Bass right now, unless a solid back up SF comes in with the package.

It's high on my Christmas list because it's for Gortat. Bass + AB for Gortat is conceivable.

But I love Bass just like you do. 3-12 tonight but crashed the boards again. I knew he looked better in that aspect when I first saw him this season (even started a thread on his rebounding this season).

His jumpshot, which is the only thing he does well, has been in the slump for a while now.  If we can get someone better, I say trade him in a heartbeat

he's not a bad player... he's just not a starter.  We anticipated him to fill Big Baby's role off the bench... not be a starting PF.  But Shaq retired, Perk was traded, Krstik never came back from Europe and our attempt to sign David West fell through... so a guy who would have been outstanding as the 4th or 5th big on the depth chart... suddenly became the 2nd by default.

Fwiw, though... Glen Davis has been thrust into the "2nd best big" role by default in Orlando as well... except that team isn't loaded with talent like Boston is to make up for that glaring weakness.

I would also trade Bass over Sully. I hate giving away youth that has shown potential. And if Bradley is traded, Ainge is truly out of his mind.

I don't dislike bass but for gortat id give up up and not think twice about it. Only people i don't want to give up for any reason is Rondo Pierce KG Avery bradley Jason terry. Ill throw in sully for an honorable mention but id get rid of him for the right deal but i wouldn't like it.

Bass is definition of great role player. 12 and 6 guy every night. I think gripe with some fans is his lack of post game. A hook shot is badly needed in his arsenal. It can take his game to next level.

Heck just have him drive to the rack more like rondo, barbosa, PP and green. whatever it takes to get high % shots and draw fouls.

The two sides of Bass

1. He is an undersized power forward. Really undersized
2. For the most part, he cannot jump and cannot convert inside
3. His defense is passable
4. He absolutely should not be a starter, but that is not his fault

1. He hustles his butt off. Hustles more than anyone else on the team in my opinion.
2. His best attribute is his jump shot, and he is not making it lately

There is no question, if it is either he or Sully who goes in a trade, it should be Bass. If he was coming off the bench, I might be fine with him, but he is not a quality starting power forward in this league. The way Sully is playing, I would put him back into the starting lineup.

For small power forward Bass has a knack finishing most of paint point with Dunks. It's an uncanny ability for undersized player. He is very patient down there amongst the giants, and then explodes off the floor two hand flush.

While I don't think Bass is a terrible player, imagine how much better he'd be if he didn't look surprised by passes that come to him. He's never ready for the ball and never knows what he's going to do with it before it's in his hands. He's like a defender in youth soccer, standing like a statue watching the game when the ball's in the other end of the field and springing to life when the ball comes into his area. That's how he looks when he gets a pass.

No reason to apologize for liking Brandon.  I don't think he'll ever be a superstar, but he's the kind of guy that I really like having on the team: Hard worker, good guy, is what he is and knows what he is.  Teams need some stars and some solid role players.  Brandon Bass fits the role of solid role player very well.

Bass is great because willing to give everything and get no accolades in return. He just works hard and wants to win.

He's all guys but his ego doesn't need the glory that many NBA players thirst for.

I don't think shipping him out is on most people's lists, I think he's just a solid trade asset and his position is where we could improve the most towards getting our next championship. He'd be one of the best 6th men in the league so hopefully we can keep him but Danny and Doc are probably wanting to keep Green ahead of him because of his potential and his ability to guard elite small forwards.
I just can't see us making a trade that keeps both Green and Bass on this squad which is unfortunate but probably has to happen for us to be an elite contender.
We shall see, we might be okay in 2 months time and Bass will stay.
Fingers crossed.

Why shoot you?

Love Bass, always have.

While he may not be the most talented or gifted player on this team, he always gives 110%, and will find ways to contribute whenever he's on the floor.

Can you imagine Jeff Green with Bass' hustle and hard work?

I'd personally take a Bass over a Green any day, (at least as they've proven themselves to this point).

So shoot me. ;)

Add: Powe was a great comparison, by rhe way, though Bass is more effective outside, and moves his feet a little quicker.

I like Bass too.   I think he is too short and wish he was two inches taller.  He is a hard worker with a dependable jump shot.  He is a good offensive asset but I think he is a liability on D at times (lack of height affects his ability to guard bigger guys) and his rebounding has never been more than average.

I think his biggest flaw is one of our own making.  He is a bench guy who has to start because lack of bigs on the C's.   He would be even better as a change of pace guy off the bench.

I don't think anyone doesn't like Bass.  I am sure Danny and Doc like Bass.  I am sure the whole team likes Bass.

But if you are going to make a trade for any other player that has any ability, you have to trade players with ability (or draft picks) for your target player.  And of course in the NBA, you have to make the salaries match.  If you want to trade for a player making 8-10 million, its either draft picks and an expiring or its a valuable player going the other way.

In our case, we don't have the expiring deal (maybe except for Pierce but he is not going anywhere.)  So valuable player it is.

The only problem with this is his handle ain't that great. Tends to fumble the ball a lot.

His jumper will start to fall though.

It's hard not to like bass. He's an incredibly hard worker and he really doesn't do too many things wrong. He's a likeable player and has a likeable game.

However, we can certainly upgrade the position. I like bass but he might be our best expendable trade bait to net a better power forward than bass

I dont get the idea that Bass isn't a starting power-forward...didnt we go to game 7 of the ECF with him as our STARTING power-forward?

not everyone in the starting lineup needs to be a star. Bass goes strong to the basket, has a reliable jumpshot, and IMO has really improved his defense this year.

I think everyone likes Bass.  I just think that everyone sees him as a player who has some value that's fairly replaceable.

He's an undersized PF who can't play the 5 spot.

He can hit the jumper well for a big, but so can Sullinger.

He can finish well on the break, but so can Wilcox.

And with Green potentially playing more 4 as the season goes on, we could cover the 4 spot in his absence, not even  taking into account that a trade involving Bass would likely involve bringing in another big like Gortat.

So yes, I think he's very good at what he does.  However, I think he's replaceable, and that's why people are more likely to use his name in trade talks.  Also, his salary helps, as a combination our young players doesn't add up to enough to bring back much salary.
