Title: Question about sign-and-trades (re: Gortat rumor)
Post by: LarBrd33 on November 23, 2012, 03:21:05 PM
So we're pretty sure the Gortat rumor is totally bogus, because Bradley + Melo = 2.8 mil and GOrtat makes 7.7 mil.  Even if you included Sully it doesn't work.  Even if you included Kris Joseph (is that scrub still on this team?) it doesn't work.

Probably a fake rumor.  We can't really make a run at a big man like Josh Smith, Gortat and Big Al until Dec 15th and Jan 15th when our players like Bass, Melo, Jeff Green, and Lee become tradeable.

Here's my question for you though... can you include players in complicated sign-and-trades?  Now that Darko is gone, don't we technically have a roster spot?  Is this totally against the rules... or don't we technically have teh ability to re-sign Keyon Dooling (he'd do it just for some free money) and then include him with some players (Bradley, Melo, sully) to make it work?  Then Dooling can just retire or something?  ...  He played with us last season.  I believe we still have the bird rights to Nenad Krstik, but he didn't play last season and there are regulations against sign-and-trading a player who DIDN'T play with us last season... but what about Dooling?

Just figured I'd ask and hopefully an expert here can explain why this doesn't work.... probably doesn't for multiple reasons.

Btw... isn't Pietrus still a free agent?  Same question, but substitute Dooling for Pietrus.

Still have that $74 million hard cap that Danny can't go over.

Limits how much extra salary Danny can take on in a move like this so I would think that it is not an option.

Yeah, then when that happens we can trade lee instead of bradley right? Most people around the league probably would rather have LEE anyways and we'd rather have bradley. Lee And Bass *How much is bass making?* Or Lee And Sully For gortat and some picks, done deal.

Yeah that works, but we can't do it right now... have to wait until lee and bass are tradeable.

No way the suns take Lee and Bass instead of Bradley, Bass, Melo and picks. They want young promising talent on cheap contracts. Lee is relatively expensive and is what he is at this point in his career. Melo, Bradley, Bass, and picks makes perfect sense for both teams.

Then take sullinger melo and LEE and picks. There is two young guys on low contracts and one proven guy and picks. I'm still against giving up bradley and i don't think the suns will demand him and i don't think we should be so willing to give him up.

Of course the Suns are going to demand Bradley, any half-decent GM would. I don't see the celtics trading for Gortat or any other quality big man without giving up Bradley.

First off lets not act like you know for a fact what the suns will demand. Secondly, I don't think we NEED to trade for a big man anyways. I would just really like to if the price is right. I think its far too early in the season to be giving up our second best defensive player that *Along with KG* helped turn our season around last year and made us the best team in the league in the second half.

I think you would be very hard pressed to find 5 GMs in the NBA that would rather take Lee instead of Bradley in this type of a deal. Bradley is not some celticsblog secret, he is extremely well scouted around the NBA.

Some celtics fans don't seem to accept that in trades you have to give something good to get something good, unless you are the lakers of course.

For the OP:
You can only make sign-and-trades between seasons, and only with free agents, who were on your team by the end of the preceding season. So no we can't sign-and-trade a filler for a Gortat deal.
