Key Matchups
(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/RondoBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/okc/WestbrookOKC.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Russell Westbrook
Rondo once again faces one of the top young PG's in the league..  Rondo had vied with Westbrook for a spot on the Olympic team before Rondo withdrew and Westbook went on to win a gold medal.  Rondo allowed Tony Parker to score a season high 26 points  in his last outing and so hopefully will be looking to be more aggressive defensively in this game.

(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/PierceBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/okc/DurantOKC.jpg)
Paul Pierce vs Kevin Durant
Kevin Durant is making a case for being the best player in the NBA and  Pierce will have his hands full trying to guard him.    Durant is also a good defender so this may be a tough game for Pierce all the way around.   We may see Jeff Green taking a turn at guarding his former teammate at times in this game also.

Honorable Mention
Kevin Garnett  vs Kendrick Perkins
Perk will always be a Celtic.  But he's also one of the more competitive players in the league.  As much as he loves his former teammates, they will be the enemy while he is on the court and expect him to be his snarly best in this game.

Game Notes

Kendrick Perkins makes his second trip back to the Garden.  In his first visit last season, the Thunder came out the winner 119-104.  The Thunder have won the last 3 games between these two teams.   I don't think it's a coincidence that the Thunder win streak coincides with the Perk for Green trade.

The Thunder lead the Northwest division while the Celtics have dropped to 4th in the Atlantic.  The Thunder are 3-1 on the road while the Celtics are 3-3 at home.  The Thunder have won 3 in a row while the Celtics have dropped their last 2 games.

The Celtics need to do something quick to find their defensive roots.  The Thunder are second in the league in scoring, averaging 103 points a game.  They are undefeated when scoring 100 points or more.  The only way the Celtics can beat this team is to clamp down on defense, something they haven't done except in spurts this season so far.

Keys to the Game
Defense -  Defense has got to be the Celtics #1 priority.  They have been allowing teams to get to the hoop and to get their shots off way too easily.  They must recommit to team defense if they want to get back on the winning track.  This is the first and foremost key to winning, period.

Rebound the Ball    The Celtics have to crash the boards in order to prevent second chance points and fast break opportunities for the Thunder.   Rebounding takes effort and desire and the Celtics haven't shown a lot of either.  They have to put out more effort on the boards as a team if they want to win.

Bench Play -  The Thunder are a deep team and they get good contributions from their second unit.  The Celtics reserves scored only 17 points against the Spurs.  The Celtics have the talent on the bench and they simply must start to contribute more on a regular basis.

Be Aggressive
- The Celtics must be more aggressive.  They have to go to the hoop and not settle for jumpers.  They were outscored in the paint 58-34 in their last game.  That  should never be.  They need to get to the basket more and be more aggressive on defense to keep their opponents from scoring in the paint.  They can't be passive and expect to win the game.

Player to Watch

Simply because I still love Perk!   Perk has taken to guarding the opposing point guard from time to time to get himself going and to throw off the opponents' offense.  It'll be fun to see if he guards his old friend Rajon Rondo in this game.

X-Factor
Pride.
The Celtics were embarrassed at home in their last game.  They need to dig down and find their Celtics Pride and do what they have to do to get it together.  We know they have the talent, but they need to put it together.

Good test for us if we really want to prove we are legit.

I think we match up pretty well with OKC because they don't have any elite bigs offensively, their starring SG is a non factor offensively, and Rondo should he able to match Westbrook point for point if he wants to.

My only worry is Durant - with Pietrus gone we don't really have an athletic, long SF who can put constant defensive pressure on Durant.  This would be a VERY good time for Jeff
Green to come to life, as he's probably the only guy  e have with the length and athleticism to match up with Durant.

Tempting to put KG on Durant the way the others have been defending lately!!

Lee could be important too - his defense off the bench against Kevin Martin could be a game changer.

Terry and Bass will have a hard time scoring against Sefalosha and Ibaka.  We need Kevin to dominate Perk in this one.

I'm more concerned with Westbrook than Durant.

KD is going to get his 25-30 points, a handful of boards, a couple assists, and five or six turnovers. That's the player he is at this point in his career--a 6'10 shooting guard who gets a pass on his bleh-at-best defense because he's got a smooth jumpshot and a great PR team.

But if Westbrook isn't going off, the Thunder are going to have a very hard time winning this basketball game. And that's on our defense. I'm hoping we can make sure to invite 3-19, three board, no assist, Westbrook into the Garden.

If Doc plays Wilcox , ROndo and KG the whole game we might win.  When Wilcox and KG sit , it will be murder.

This would be a good game to start Green. I like the way he and Pierce matchup against Durant and Sefolosha, more than I like how Pierce and Terry do. Plus, it would give us a chance to see how he plays not coming off the bench.

I see that the complete opposite way.

I think this would be one of the worst teams to start Green alongside Pierce on the wing against. Oklahoma has two big wings who are both perfectly able to defend someone like Jeff Green and can nullify Green's strengths.

Thabo Sefolosha has the size of a small forward and is one of the best wing defenders in the league while Durant is like 6-11, freakishly long and an intimidating physical specimen for most players to play against.

I think Oklahoma are one of, if the not, best equipped teams to handle a Jeff Green + Paul Pierce wing combination.

I think Terry is a good option against Thabo because Thabo is a non-threat offensively. So Terry's weak defense shouldn't get punished + it allows Boston to keep one of it's best offensive players on the court.

I think that match-up is an advantage for Boston.

Given the team's performances to kick off the season, I have a very hard time seeing them getting anything out of this game.

I think Westbrook is going to go off. 25+ points. Loads of dribble penetration. Making the team defense look silly. Scoring at will and creating opportunities for others. Durant and Kevin Martin should do their thing too.

Hard to see Boston keeping up with that type of offensive firepower going off.

On the other hand, I would like to prevent Pierce from covering Durant defensively, which could wear him out offensively. We can put Green on Durant, a player he is familiar with. Have Pierce on Sefo, which would rest him offensively. Plus, I think Green would be very motivated to play against his old team.

i believe it is up to the celtic defense, pure and simple.

the games i have watched this year show the celtics are not playing consistently great defense. they have moments, maybe an entire period of good defense. but not consistently great defense and that is what is killing them as much as anything else.

too many late switches on defense, or no switch. too many break downs on team defense. this only has to happen  4 to 5 times a game and it gives the other team 8+ points. that is a lot of points to give up.

san antonio made them pay for such break downs. oklahoma can make the celtics pay as well, but the celtics may have an easier time defending oklahoma since they rely upon a couple of stars and less the overall team execution of SA - which is great.

so, go celtics!!!! go play some great defense tonight!!!!  ;D

Lol... Kevin durant is the second best player in the league and it has virtually nothing to do with his pr team.. he averages less turnovers then westbrook and heck Paul pierce for his career, averages 10 rebounds...pretty good for a "6 10 shooting guard" his defends has also gotten better every year. Russel westbrook could outofcontrol himself to a good game though.

Westbrook is starting to reach Celtic killer status. I expect a big game out of him which cannot happen if the C's have any chance at winning. If he gets into the paint it's probably a layup or kick to Martin/Durant in the corner.

I'm just saying that Durant is a known quantity, but Westbrook is the dude that the Thunder win or lose by.

Also, I would hope that the point guard has more turnovers than a wing player, by nature of their positions.

They'll be alot of broken TV sets in C land tonite.. It will  be showtime for Westbrook driving down the lane all nite. He could go off for 40! Heck even Thabeet might get a double double! Perk, Ibaka, Collison, Durant..........don't see many rebounds in our future!

The Pierce-Durant matchup always hurts us. Durant is too long for Paul to guard, and too quick for Bass. I hope we see a lot of Jeff Green tonight.

I think that match-up is an advantage for Boston.

You cannot leave Sefolosha wide open, though. He's hitting 51% of his threes through the first twelve games.
He's not trying that much, but sometimes, it's a couple of points from those role players that decide the winner.

Key for the Celtics should be keeping Durant and Martin out of free-throw line as much as possible. It's going to be difficult, though. Also, Bass and Sullinger will really be in a tough situation against Ibaka.

Despite this, I have an odd feeling that Celtics will get the win somehow.

Optimistic prediction of the night:
C's win 105-102 despite being outrebounded by 7+.  OKC turns the ball over a lot, so the C's will capitalize on fast-break/transition buckets to offset OKC's dynamic scoring trio.  C's bench steps up in this one and provides us energy and scoring.  Durant scores an efficient 30 points but Westbrick scores 25 points on 18-20 shots despite easy buckets in the paint and has 5+ turnovers for the game.

Don't make me look stupid, Celtics.  Let's take this one and take a 1-1 record between SA and OKC.

That is equal to 1 win out of 30.
I don't think there is a team dominant enough to win 29 out of 30 on road at the moment.

Donkey prediction of the night - Jeff Green will drop 30 on OKC! but the fact that this turned the earth off it's axis caused Rondo to slip in the 4th quarter and injure his ankle putting him out for the rest of the year. Celtics win 98-95

He's had tons of wide open looks this season, just hasn't been making them.  I like his defensive energy and speed in transition, but he needs to knock those shots down.

This is the best I've seen the Celtics play all season.  Green and Sullinger have both been fantastic.

Sullinger has been steady improving his defense game by game, his jumpshot has been money, and I love his hustle.  If he keeps this up he is going to be a special player for us by the time we reach the All-Star break.

Also if Green could play like this EVERY game then he could consider his contract earned.

To me these two guys are really the 'wildcards' of our team.  We know Terry will give us 10-12 PPG, we know what we'll get from our Big 3 + Bass and Bradley, we have a pretty good idea od what Wilcox brings.

Sullinger and Green are the guys who could make or break this team based on how they develop.  If those guys play consistently well we are going to be a VERY hard team to beat, but if they play soft and tentative we will struggle.

Great effort in the first half.

Our offense is looking much better than it has in past games.

Our rebounding is improved as well.  Bass is showing a lot of effort in this area, and Sully is making life difficult for OKC's bigs.

The bench, especially Green, is playing well.  He's looking for his shot well, and Lee is playing great defense.

Finally, how about Jet?  Nice buzzer beater!

We see flashes of what this team could be on a relatively consistent basis.  The defense is still not even close to where it needs to be, but you can see the potential for great ball at both ends of the floor.

C's need to keep attacking.  Rondo needs to get to the rim more and hit the FT line.

Green has played well, but the team made a nice run with him on the bench, I don't see a problem with that. Sully also showing why he has the skills to have a decent NBA career. That cut to the basket where he got the feed from KG for a layup...maybe 10% of people in the NBA have the IQ to make that play.

Also, when people say something is "unacceptable", what are they saying exactly? Are they demanding some sort of repercussion has to be applied as a penalty or something? Or is it just a way of saying that something shouldn't really happen and they're just unable to express it correctly.

Outstanding half. My son and I were cheering like this was a game 7. The defense was VERY good when it needed to be, wiping out that 9 point deficit. We turned it on about 2 minutes into the 1st quarter and we both predicted Celtics were down 15 already (lol). They were down 3 and it was an excellent performance.

Still some clear issues out there on the floor, but very very encouraging.

And what would you do instead?
he'd call up fab melo from maine, and play collins 25 minutes per game.

I think there are a lot of Celtics fans who simply cannot enjoy a good game. Bass sucks, Doc sucks, Ainge sucks, blow it up...wow. This team BROUGHT IT tonight and everyone contributed. Bass is doing the small things, Green showed up, Rondo letting it roll, KG still fighting late in the game.

I don't know what you want out of this team other than effort like this. I only ask for this, even if they lose playing like this later in the season. The 2007-08 squad also had a lot of issues, exacerbated in losses.

Enjoy the Celtics people, they are playing solid ball tonight.

Every night. KG hits the stupid 28 minute magic # and Doc goes small. Bass is our center. Did anyone notice the first play on defense and they gave up a dunk? Terrible!!!

I'll keep an eye out when he gets to 28 minutes and let you know.

I didn't watch it but I've read up on other message boards. No mention of bad D. One mention of good energy on D even.

They do have a guy named Kevin Durant and Ibaka seemed to be beasting. Adding Kevin Martin certainly helps.

Edit: got the answers as I was attempting to post. Nice. Nice nice.

And wow, Kevin Martin with 3 points...

Freaky stat of the night...Barbosa has the best +/- on the team tonight.

I don't care what anybody (or the stat sheet) says, he has been fantastic.

He's not known as a defender, but he's playing hard on D every night.  He's not a natural PG but he's doing a great job handling the ball.  When called for he's scored with the best of them.  I expected him to be a scorer, but I never expected him to bring the intangibles.

Tonight was just an outstanding effort from everbody.  We let it slipe for about 5 or 6 minutes in the 4th quarter, but this is the closest I've seen of "48 minutes of solid basketball" for years.

Even the guys who didn't do well on the stat sheet (Lee, Barbosa, Bass) impressed me with their defense, effort, hustle and work ehthic.  Every single guy on this team played with heart today, and even if we lost I would have been proud of this performance.

As for the guys criticising Bass - all through the offseason and preseason I was one of the first guys saying Bass is limited, but he played hard tonight.  It's not all about misses and makes - he was playing aggressive on both ends of the floor, and I appreciate that effort.

My two memories of this game that I cannot shake:

1. The huge smile on Jeff Green's face when he got that fast break layup + 1

2. The huge smile on Terry's face when he hit that dagger

Both of those guys had a look of pride and releif that finally things are coming together.  The look said "we are the Boston Celtics, and this is just the start of things to come".

Lets hope the look doesn't lie!!

This would be a VERY good time for Jeff Green to come to life, as he's probably the only guy  e have with the length and athleticism to match up with Durant.

Lee could be important too - his defense off the bench against Kevin Martin could be a game changer.

Terry and Bass will have a hard time scoring against Sefalosha and Ibaka.  We need Kevin to dominate Perk in this one.

Well, I called it! :D

I had a feeling this one was going to go well.  We actually played hard against the Spurs in the last game and though we lost it in the end, we stuck right with them for 3 1/2 quarters.  That to me was a sign of improvement, even if it wasn't where we wanted to be.

I figured that would give our guys a little confidence, plus we'd get a day off to rest (and go over some plays) and thought we might come our ready to play tonight.

I agree with Tommy - defense was a 100% improvement.  Remember that this doesn't mean the defense was 100%, it just means it was twice as good as it has been so far - and I agree with that.  Still a way's to go but a MASSIVE improvement, and I'd say it was our best defensive game so far.

Special credit to Lee and Green for their DEFENSE.  Despite what he score sheet suggests Green did a really nice job on Durant defensively for much of this game, and Lee played with the type of defensive intesity I have expected from him all along.

JET was $$$$$$$$$$ tonight. Green did well also. I've always liked Bass partly because I am an LSU homer. I think Sully has potential. Lee? we'll see. I'll leave it up to Danny to trade who he thinks is best for Gortat if that deal indeed happens.

Great win for Celtics. Beating a high caliber team like OKC will just boost up confidence. JET with the dagger, classic.

Off topic:

I'm not for one who bashes fellow posters, but this has to be done. I apologize for any inconvenience this might do. But I have to say something about some guy.

That Terry 3 put tears of happiness in my eyes. ;)

I'm not going to get too far into it tonight but you guys are mistaken if you don't think we played really good d for most of the game... I really don't know what game you were watching!

If it's because of Westbrook or Durant's points then you need to watch film again because a lot of their points came from crazy made buckets when there was good defense on them... go re-watch the game!

RR did let Westbrooke go into the paint easily but most of the time guys rotated fine but Westbrooke was just hot. Durant was held in check most of the night then came on in the fourth with shots like a 30ft 3.

I said the same thing on my twitter. If you watched the game you would know we played good defense today. You can't just look at the score and assume OKC getting 100 came from bad defense. The 100 came from great offense.

I was there, we played excellent D, no doubt about it. Green especially... he pretty much had KD locked down when he was guarding him.  Pierce, Bass, KG, Lee and Barbs all played great D as well.

a solid win...I think this is what we need from Green night in and night out...not necessarily 17ppg...but the effort. He/the team was looking to get him shots...and they were looking to get him going to the basket.

25minutes, 6/11 shots thats the sort of touches/minutes he needs to make an impact

offense good... defense bad.

I expected us to play .500 ball until February when we hopefully make some moves.  Nothing has changed my opinion.

If you watched the game and payed attention there's no way you come to that conclusion.

We held OKC to about 6 ppp below their average, I don't think that qualifies as bad defense.

Nice showing.  Tommy was real excited about how the defense was 100% improved from San Antonio, but I disagree.  Still got a ways to go.

And shooting such a high percentage tonight really helped.

Kevin Martin following three straight 20+ points performance with this one helped.
We still allowed OKC to score 35 4th quarter points.
Our offense looks a lot better than our defense does, to be honest.

No question, our D has been the problem all season.  But we look good offensively.

I believe this team will tighten up on the defensive end and our offense will continue to thrive.  It's still early.

I know. We have time to get better. If Lee and Green provide expected energy alongside Sully, we'll be better.
AB's return can only help, too.

Somebody kill me because I had to miss the game...

But could the "bad D" be because of the fact that OKC is an amazing defensive team? Did our guys really not improve at all so far?
Our defense was actually very good, they did a good job playing OKC tough. The only reason they had a small lead for much of the first half was westbrook hitting some nasty 3s early in the shot clock. You let him take those shots because he's so dangerous driving.

In the fourth quarter OKC went small with Kevin Durant at the PF position and Collison at C. Devastating line up to defend against, plus KG needed his fourth quarter rest. While they scored a ton against the C's with it the C's also got good looks as well.

The defense only had troubles when OKC went with KD at the 4 position. That lineup up is probably the most effective offensive line up in the league.

I do agree that this team has a serious weakness if KG isn't on the floor when opposing teams go small.
