Leandro Barbosa vs Jose Calderon
Both teams had to play without their starting point guard in their last game.  The Celtics lost their last game without Rondo while the Raptors won their last game without Lowry.  Calderon is a very good point guard in his own right and so Barbosa will have his hands full trying to contain him.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3959.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4129.jpg)
Brandon Bass vs Andrea Bargnani
Bass gives up 4 inches to Bargnani but Bass is much stronger and hopefully can keep Bargnani off balance.  Bargnani is a good 3 point shooter and so Bass will need to guard him on the perimeter as well as inside.

Honorable Mention
Kevin Garnett vs Jonas Valanciunas
KG is known to be hard on rookies and hopefully he can rattle the Raptors' rookie center.  KG has been playing well and hopefully that will continue in this game.

Keys to the Game
Rebound -  The Celtics have got to crash the boards to prevent second chance points.  They are on the way to setting a record for fewest rebounds.  I'd love for Doc to play Darko with the second unit instead of always going with small ball.  Much of rebounding is effort and desire as evidenced by Courtney Lee's team high 9 rebounds in the last game.    The effort they put out on the boards will usually spread to other areas of the game as well.

Defense -  The Celtics must make defense a priority in each and every game.  They seem to play defense in spurts and in between they allow easy baskets and wide open shots especially on pick and rolls and in transition.   They must play strong defense all game.  With the Raptors, they must particularly guard the perimeter as they love to shoot from beyond the arc.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics have to be the more aggressive team.  They have to be aggressive in going to the basket and not just settle for outside shots.  Good things happen when players drive to the hoop.  They also have to be aggressive on defense and in fighting for loose balls.

Make Free Throws -  Down the stretch against the Nets, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry each missed a pair of free throws.  Both are usually good free throw shooters and so it may have been a matter of focus.  It's usually hard enough for the Celtics to get to the line, they have to make good on the ones they get.

Game Notes
This is the first regular season meeting between these two Atlantic Division teams and it is the first of 4 meetings this season.  The Celtics are 2-2 at home and would like to establish a domination at home.  The Raptors are 1-3 on the road.

The Celtics might be forced to play without their point guard and assist leader once again as Rondo is listed as day to day.  The Celtics were 9-5 last season without Rondo including their last meeting with the Raptors in the Garden that the Celtics won 100-64.

The Celtics are playing in the first of back to back games and in the 3rd in 4 days.  The Raptors last game was on Tuesday so they come into this one well rested.  This is a rare Saturday afternoon game.  In past seasons, the Celtics have struggled in early games.  Hopefully that trend doesn't continue in this game.

X-Factors

Bench + Rondo
The Celtics are playing in the 3rd game in 4 days and are in the midst of a 4 games in 5 days stretch.  Doc has done well to limit the starters minutes and the second unit has come through for them.  They have to once again come through in this game as Doc will limit the starters with another game tomorrow.   The odds of winning definitely increase if Rondo can play.

Hehe, yeh, Celtic way = struggle through most the game, lose in the end :p

Nah, just hoping for a strong outing from Lee, Terry and Green. That's all I want - for them to get better and better with each game. I see Barbosa as our wildcard, in that he's just able to fit in easily as Rondo's backup. The rest will take care of themselves, and with Bradley back, and Wilcox & the big three in the mix, that'd be the core I'd put money on for the championship.

I think it's more like going through the motions until the going gets hard.
I'm actually optimistic about this team. They 'll be fine when it matters most.

Yeah, you nailed it there. So all I'm looking for is those guys to step it up, start playing in tune with the rest a bit more.

I really hate Sullinger double teaming in the low post when Lee is guarding, it's unnecessary at the moment.

We need to stop over-helping.

try checking the other LP channels. I'm in LA and I have both away and home channels.

looks like Rondo's gonna get 10 assists in the 1st quarter.

Rondo is clearly still hampered by the ankle (as he should be). Out there solely to be distributor and floor general. It's pretty evident that he doesn't have his usual speed and quickness. But 1/2 Rondo better than no Rondo.

I completely agree, but in that case I thought it was a good double team because the shot clock was winding down and DeRozan seemed like he was beginning to get into a rhythm.  Raptors ended up with a long 2 at the end of the shot clock.

I agree in some regard, but I'm of the theory (other than a bit weak perimeter defense) we're constantly over helping on this team, which is leading to opposite bigs having dominating presences.

One of our biggest strengths has always been guarding teams straight up. The only player that should be helped is Terry.

What I don't know why we don't do more is give the ball to Green in at the 3 point arc (at the height of the free-throw line) and run an ISO for him there. He's had great success in that spot, either with drawing fouls, emphatic dunks, or finding open men for corner 3s.

Agreed, not sure why they don't do this every time he draws a slower footed PF.

I mean, with KG on the floor it's not like the 5 can cheat down to help.

I'd run it against just about anyone he has on. His size assures that the defender has to guard him close in the perimeter since he can shoot it from there, and he has a great first step.

hoenstly, I think they are mis-using him on the bench....they just have barbosa dribble around for 20seconds having everyone stand around.

they need to run more plays for him if they want to get him involved..he should have the 1 step on anyone who is guarding him

I don't think it's a coinkydink Rajon tends to have freakish assist numbers when he gets significant runs with Wilcox. I personally love watching it.

Rondo needs to learn to give-up the ball earlier when he's pushing the ball. Two plays in a row where he missed Green in transition. Thankfully Rondo recovered with two good passes further along the play, but it's a bad habit to have.

Dang where is the Jeff Green we had in the Pre Season.
He is playing horrible thus far.

you answered your own question - those were PRE-SEASON games. when the lights came on and the games actually counted, Jeff Green disappears. i can't wait for the playoffs !!!

Very happy with the win, we won like we were supposed to and the starters got rest.  C's finish with 37 assists for the game.

just keep telling yourself that, like Danny does. he has to justify a disastorous trade and ridiculous contract somehow.

he also only had one turn over and when rondo was out he had a big part in running the offense

so, you are telling me if green consistently would give you 9points on 4/6 shooting while keeping Pierce on the bench, that is NOT a good game?

Can I ask the anti-Green crowd something? what would you consider a good game from Jeff, seeing as how he's a bench player.

not a great game, a good game.

Because apparently 16 points and the game winning defensive play = not a good game vs. Utah

11 points and a key steal not enough vs washington.

12 points and 3 blocks not a good game vs. the bucks

and tonight, 9 points on 4-6 shooting also not a Good game.

I mean, I'm not trying to say he's lived up to his contract, or he's playing great or something. I think overall he's really underwhelmed when you throw in the 3 stinker games.

But from the way people post you would think he's Marbury.  ::)

I'm just trying to see what it takes before we can say "good game by Jeff" and not have people jumping out of the wood work to tell us how stupid we are.

is the threshold 20 points? 25?

Face it... Perk sucks.  He's a sluggish overweight who is a below average rebounder who can't score.  Yes there was a time long ago where he could battle high tier centers but that time has been long gone.

The anti-green crowd will never say he's had a good game no matter how well he plays...

I feel the threshold for green is probably 12ppg average this year...theres too many scorers on this team for him to get enough touches to score more

its no different than how no matter how many good games avery bradley strings together you have posters saying how hes a one hit wonder

They are in the modern era my friend, but I agree 15-20 years ago alot of these "assists" that are credited across the league would not be.

TP to crownsy and hpantazo.

To all Jeff Green haters: the trade was a good trade and Perk's gone. Get over it.

Now regarding the contract per annum salary and length for Green, however, I do question Danny's wisdom on that.

I'm sure Green would be more beloved if he would scowl and fumble the ball out of bounds with regularity.

I agree entirely with this.  Of course he hasn't gone from zero to hero like a lightswitch - it'll be a gradual process as he spends more time around the team and gets back into his rythm, but he's definately improved a LOT as of late.

For the record, over the last 5 games Green is averaging (Per 36 Min):

15 Points
1.5 Assists
6 Rebounds
5.3 Free Throw Attempts
3.4 Turnovers

Shooting very pretty efficiently too:

47% FG
50% 3PT
76% FT

The only bad statistic is the turnovers, but that's expected on a new team where he's still trying to find his role.  Otherwise that is VERY solid production for a bench player, and the PP48 scoring rate (20.0) is already up around vintage Jason Terry range - remember Terry traditionally played 30+ minutes in his sixth man roles.

Honestly, what we're getting from Green now on a per minute basis is enough to consider him a very solid and productive addition to our bench, but if he can up his scoring to around 12 PPG in similar minutes that then  pushes him from 'solid' to 'elite'.  Still, 9 PPG is really all we need from him as long as he keeps improving his defense and maintains his current rebounding rate.

If we can (consistently) get 9 from Green, 7 from Barbosa, 6 from Lee, 6 from Wilcox and 4 from Sully (that's about what those guys are averaging right now) then that's 32 PPG from our bench every single night - about 3x what we were getting from our second unit last year, when we took Miami to game 7 of the finals.

That also means 30%-35% of our scoring production is coming from our bench - this means we only need to rely on our starters to give us 65%-70% of our offense rather than 90% like last season.

Plus all of that ignores the fact that Terry will likely go back to the bench once Bradley returns - that gives us even more scoring punch.

The problem with Green isn't his production, it's the expectations.  People look at his contact and they are expecting him to put up $9M numbers in order to justify that contact, but he doesn't need to do that this year, let alone right now.  Think of that contact as an investment - he's got the next three years to earn and live up to that, and if he keeps working on his game he will earn that money in the coming years.  Right now all we need is for him to be a productive contributer off the bench.

Also loving the Barbosa addition - people say he's no point guard, but so far he's on an Ass:TO ratio of 3.6 which is 17th in the league and scary close to Rondo (4.1).

Not saying the guys a pure PG, but if he keeps playing like this then he may fill the role better than expected once he learns the Celtics playbook.

Oh, and his 18 Points-Per-36-Minutes on 48% shooting ain't too shabby either!!

:D

In fact speaking of turnovers:

- Barbosa has gone 69 straight minutes (last 3 games) without a turnover

- Sully has played 89 straight minutes (last 6 games) without a turnover

No wonder Doc likes those guy!

Wilcox (in his last 88 minutes) has recorded 7 turnovers - that's anywhere from 14 to 21 potential opposition points that aren't getting scored if Sully is out there.

Wilcox definately brings something great to the table with his size, energy and athleticism but I can see why Doc still gives Sullinger plenty of minutes - kid knows how to play!
