Game Notes
The Celtics will look to avoid an 0-3 start tonight as they take on the Washington Wizards.  The Celtics main concern going into this game is their defense.  Last year, the Celtics led the league in opponents' FG percentage allowing teams to shoot just 41.9  from the floor.  This season they have allowed the Heat to shoot 54.4% (and score 120 points) and the Bucks to shoot 46.5%

The Celtics are playing in the second of back to back games, after a rather listless loss in their home opener to the Bucks.  The Wizards have had 3 days off and have spent practice studying the Celtics tendencies and feel that they are ready for the challenge.  Even without their star guard John Wall, who is out with a knee injury, the Wizards are an improved team and will present a test for the Celtics.  The Celtics will need to do more than just show up in order to avoid yet another loss.

KG spoke to the team after their loss last night and encouraged them to imitate a pack of hyenas with their play.   That could be good advice for them.   They have a lot of individual talent on this team but they have yet to put it together and play as a team, especially on the defensive end.    They need to band together and develop chemistry on the court in order to right the ship.  That should be just a matter of time and could happen with any game.

This is the first of a rare home and home set for these two teams and they will face each other again on Wednesday in Boston. With each game, this team should be learning more about themselves and building chemistry bit by bit.   Look for the Celtics to come out more aggressively tonight and for the bench to step up a bit more than they have in the first two games.   Both teams are looking for their first win.  It is the Wizards home opener.  Expect a dog fight from both teams.  Or perhaps, for the Celtics, a hyena fight.

Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/media/act_rajon_rondo.jpg)vs(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/media/act_aj_price.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs AJ Price
As Rondo goes so go the Celtics.  With former number 1 pick John Wall out, Rondo should have a much easier time against AJ Price and should have a big game.

Kevin Garnett vs Emeka Okafor
KG has a couple of inches on Okafor and should be able to bully his way inside or get his shot off over Okafor,.

Honorable Mention
Courtney Lee vs Bradley Beal
CLee should be able to use his veteran wiles to get the best of the Rookie.

Keys to the Game
Defense    Defense always wins games.  The Celtics have to make defense their priority and shut down the paint as well as staying on their outside shooters.

Rebound  The Celtics must crash the boards and keep the Wizards from getting second chance points, fast break opportunities and extra possessions.   As I have said before, when the Celtics put out the effort necessary to win the battle of the boards, that effort seems to pick up every area of their game as well.

Be Aggressive  The Celtics need to play aggressively.  They need to take the ball to the hoop and try to get to the line early and often.   Make the officials call the fouls.  They also have to go for every loose ball and battle for all the rebounds.   If they play passively, they could be facing a loss to a team that is hungry for their first win.

Limit Turnovers - The Celtics have turned the ball over too much this season so far.  They tend to make lazy passes and lose focus from time to time and give their opponents easy scoring opportunities because of it.  They have to take better care of the ball.

X-Factors
Attitude
The Celtics have played rather passively so far, especially on the defensive end.  They haven't been aggressive and haven't shown much chemistry among the players.  Hopefully KG's call to arms (or paws, as the case may be) will be enough to wake them up.

I would be happy if they at least look like they have practiced together once or twice tonight. I know their defensive schemes are complicated but jeez, what the heck have they been doing all training camp? They look like they met each other for the first time at the court 10 minutes before the game last night.

agreed.  There's got to be some display of cohesion tonight.  Washington is not a good team and C's have no excuse not to beat this team

Doc's going to have to tinker with this line up to get the chemistry right.  My sense is to start Sully with KG, giving Sully someone to protect the hoop and KG someone to muck things up in the paint.  Bass has a ton of experience coming, off the pine, while Sullinger has been nothing but a starter his whole basketball life.

I don't care how mediocre our team is... we should blow the Wizards out by 60.  They are awful.  Their three best players are hurt.  Should be a massacre.

Wow. Ariza travels, is alone with the ring and still manages to miss a layup. If the Celtics have any issues getting by the Wizards today I might get slightly concerned. Wow.

Edit: Also, whenver you see a "Star Comparison" and Jordan Crawford is one of the two players being compared, you know your team should be winning.

Actually thought we did a decent job of feeding KG while he was in there, he had 4 shot attempts in 5 minutes. What I don't think we did enough of, nor have done enough of, is trying to get it to KG in the post. I know he has a great mid-long range game, but he's still got something left to give in the post too!

Jeff Green's shot just isn't falling consistently right now.  Wonder if he's still a little rusty from the long layoff.

For such a smart player, KG occasionally makes the kind of passes you'd expect from Andray Blatche or Demarcus Cousins.

They need to pair Sully with Kg and Bass with Wilcox or Darko. Let them sub together. But Bass and Sully does not work.

All the Wizards offensive talent is on the bench - they play two non-scoring defensive role players in their starting line up (Ariza and Okafor) along with a rook, a limited PF (Booker) and a 3rd string quality PG in AJ Price.   Off the bench they have inefficient but semi-talented scorers in Crawford and Pargo, a nice scoring big (at least this game) in Seraphin and someone who at least used to be good offensively in Webster.

Turnovers especially.  When we don't turn the ball over, we can be an efficient offensive team.

There were a couple of PP turnovers that were really frustrating.  Terry has had his share as well in the first couple of games.  Those seem like they come from just not being into the game enough.

our team needs to be taken out back to the woodshed after this game...cmon.  wizards missing 3 starters and we can't stop their 2nd string?  just embarrassing.

The best unit I saw tonight and in the preseason is Rondo, Pierce, Green, Sully, and KG. If Doc would ever let that unit play together for a while, this team will be ok.

That wasn't exactly easy. But a win is a win. Our bench got absolutely crushed by their bench. And their bench is the bench of the Washington Wizards.

That's not good.

but we can't be happy about anything but getting the win and holding on.  gotta start somewhere I guess.  and way better than 0-3.  lets put this one in the rear view mirror and get some good practices in, and raise our intensity level.

The bench Wizards are quite a bit better than the starting Wizards.  Seraphin gave us fits and Crawford and Pargo were the only perimeter guys who could hit shots.

Thank goodness for the Pierce three and the bizarro Rondo shot.

KG, Paul and Rajon are holding the team together with sticky tape. At least the seal has been broken now with our first win, hoorah!

Non-existent offensive rebounding (only 6 offensive boards off of at least 44 missed shots: around 12%) & weak bench production (10-27 shooting AND bad defense) rearing their ugly heads from last season.

I'll always take a win.

That, however, was not a win that leaves a great feeling.  So many things that are going to take time to fix.

1st, is some of the new guys aren't playing great.  Green and Terry standout here.  Terry surprises me, although he can be streaky, but Green has me truly concerned.  Still too timid.  He has plenty of tools to score, yet isn't agressive enough.  I think they should try to get him the ball more, and tell him to just attack.  He did it in the pre-season, so I know he can do it.

2nd, the defense will get better, but I'm afraid not to the level it was last season.  Hopefully Bradley helpsd here, which he should.  Still think we need another big, some one who is a legit starter.

Last, Docs rotations are way off. Bass and Sully should not be in the game together, ever.  I'm rather perplexed by Doc's thinkg here.  Also, Green needs to play as little PF as possible.  My favorite line-up involves Pierce at SG with Green at SF.  This is the other reason, I beleive we need to trade one, or two, of our SGs.

I actually thought Green played well - didn't help on the boards, but scored pretty well in a variety of ways.

Terry struggled the most of anyone.

I thought Green played decent.  Still has the timidness in him, at times, but is also still misused.  Doc forces too many minutes at PF for Green.  Tonight, not as much, so he ended up with fewer minutes overall.  He is good at SF, minutes are just tough there.

Terry is way off right now.  Seems he can't hit 3 to save his life.  His percentage must be terrible at the moment.  His defense has been atrocius as well.  He is doing some good things, like driving to the basket, just not often enough.  I suspect, ultimately, he will come around.  Too good and too proven to not.

Still looking out of sync on both ends of the floor.  I think a lot of guys are pressing, e.g. Lee, Terry, Green, although I thought Jeff played reasonably well tonight.....but things looked forced on offense.   On defense, still making simple mistakes like rotations....they had a lot of good looks inside.   But a win is a win....

Lee is definately expendable, and once Bradley comes back I'd have no hessitation trading him.

We really need Terry and Green playing 25 - 28 minutes every night IMHO for them to be at their best.  In the minutes (and the touches) they are getting it just seems like they can't get any type of flow going.

Lee has been starting and yet he's barely provided more than what Terry and Green have off the bench in less minutes.

No change in mentality yet - I'm gonna give these guys plenty more time to gel because no team that makes this many changes is dominant from the start.  In 3 weeks if they are still playing like this I'll be more worries.

Regardless I though today was a definate improvement over the first two games (at least the first half) though still nasty.
