Game Notes

The Celtics and Nets square off for the second time in 3 nights.  The first game between these two resulted in a 97-96 Celtics loss. The Nets sat all of their starters while the Celtics played their full squad.  But a unit of Kris Joseph, Fab Melo, Micah Downs, Rob Kurz and Jason Collins lost a 9 point lead in the final minutes to give the Nets a win.  I can honestly say we probably will never see that lineup on the court again.

I expect both teams to play their starters.  The Nets are at home and the Celtics have just 2 more preseason games  after this one to tune up the lineups.  Since Doc hasn't started the same unit twice, it's hard to tell who will be in the starting lineup for this one.  I'm thinking it will be the traditional starting lineup with Lee at SG.  The Celtics will get to see the new look Nets starting lineup of Williams, Johnson, Wallace, Humphries, and Lopez.

This will be the first time ever for the Celtics to play in the brand new Barclays Center, which will be the home of the Nets from now on.  This will be the Nets' second game in their new home.  The Celtics had cut two players just before Tuesday's game.  They have just added another player in Leandro Barbosa, but I'm not sure if he will be in uniform and available for the game.  Darko is expected to miss this game with the wrist injury.

The Celtics still have much to work on before the season starts, and with just 2 games after this one, it seems like a good time to get serious with the rotations and leave the experimentation  behind.  Hopefully they can lower their turnovers and finally get their pick and roll defense to work.

Keys to the Game

Defend the Pick and Roll
Limit turnovers
Develop chemistry in both units
Fill given roles

Not sure if I love or hate the Barclays center yet. I've heard you need to see it in person to appreciate it. I'll be in NYC next month so I guess I'll see then.

And Jerry Stackhouse isn't fossil fuel yet? Weird.

I more looking forward seeing my boy @DrayBaltche, The man is proving a lot of people wrong right now. Funny how a non guaranteed contract will make some players realize what they can lose and straighten things up.

I wanted him here...

Donnie Marshall just said on the pre-game show (verbatim, I rewinded it):

Tanguay: "Doc is giving a lot of leeway to Rondo. He's letting him run with it."

Marshall: "Yeah, I'm sorry, people at home, it almost feels like he was waiting for Ray to leave to say, Rondo, here you go. It really is starting to feel like that, but I feel like he is really relinquishing too much of that power to ROndo.

"You've got KG, you've got Paul, six years in? He's still giving Rondo a lot of power very early here. Let's pay attention to that."

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? SIX YEARS IN?

OK, maybe he's just bitter that Scal is easing him out of town, but let's just cut the cord right now with this clown.

I don't have CSNNE (I don't live in Boston), but didn't someone else state that Donny always bring up Ray. I promise I laughed hard at this comment when I read it.

WE BE KILLIN' this Scrubby and over-hyped Nets team. Our defense looking superb so far, even though it's just the early stages of the game. Pierce looks to be in impeccable shape.

LOL at the "Let's go Celtics" chants at the new Nets arena. Part of the reason they located was so that they could have their own fans in their own arena. Guess that didn't work out so well.  ;D With our rotation guys in, we look insane. Pierce in tip-top condition right now; we're really going to need him to step up again this year.

Man Rondo really looking for his own shot. I really like his aggressiveness. And I agree with the commentator saying we're really going to look different this year compared to last year -- much more dynamic and fast-paced.

Some of those shots I would've complained about from Rondo in previous seasons, but with the combination of the pace he's keeping it makes a huge difference of how I feel about those shots. Glad that he's looking aggressive and playing with confidence.

Yeah, moving with the ball really isn't one of his strengths. I think Bass is trying very hard to impress Doc, knowing that Sully is breathing down his neck to take over the starting 4 spot.

Is not the moving the ball. It's in relation to Bass wanting to play in the post, where he just sucks.

I like Green's energy.  I really think some people are underestimating the effect a training camp and playing with Rondo (not to mention the rest of this team) is going to have on him.

Even if he doesn't get dramatically better than he was in Oklahoma City, I think that those factors can actually make him a much better player here than he was there.

Just look what happened to what appeared to be a washed-up Shaq when he had Rondo throwing him alley-oops and lots of talented scorers drawing defensive attention away from him.

We lose to them when they don't play their starters at HOME and yet we look like we're going to run them out of the building when they do play their starters AT THEIR OWN COURT.

Can you say PRE-SEASON BASKETBALL?

Seriously, to all you oversensitive, fairweather Celtics fans who thought the skies were falling after Tuesday night, does this game not tell you that pre-season means NOTHING?

I like Green's energy.  I really think some people are underestimating the effect a training camp and playing with Rondo (not to mention the rest of this team) is going to have on him.

I was always saying this would be the case.

Jeff came to us in the worst possible circumstances and still had a reasonably productive season for us on a per minutes basis.

I was 90% sure that as long as he was healthy he'd be a major contributer for us, but so many otehrs bagged him out as if they expected him to be utter garbage.

He's a good kid, happy to see him do well :)

Rondo nd Courtney Lee on da break is deadly man we aint been dis fast paced in years

I was saying this all along too - with Rondo, Bradley, Lee, Terry, Pierce, Green, Wilcox and now Barbosa as well...we SHOULD be one of the best fast break teams in the league! :D

Haha yep, Lee is a wee bit more athletic than Ray haha

"bruised knee" Sure he could have come back in a regular season game but given it is the preseason didn't come back in the second half.

Rondo looked great, again, tonight.
Sullinger, despite bad whistles, had some great, instinctual plays (like the pass right there).
KG looked sharp beyond belief.
Terry kept on hitting.
Courtney running, leaking out was great. Guys running with Rondo, so nice to see. And everyone on the team looking upcourt as soon as there was a stop or rebound.
Really looked sharp.

What I just saw was amazing and I don't ever think I've seen it before. Two minutes to go up by 25 Micah Downs takes a free throw and the entire Celtcs team ran full speed back on defense. I've never seen that kind of competitiveness anywhere before. Then they did the exact same thing in the other direction on defense. With 30 seconds to go they're still playing very hard. And it's not just scrubs trying to make the team. Melo is out there. Sully is out there. Joseph is out there. I'm shocked at what I just saw

Wow, looks like the C's decided to treat tonight's game as the real thing.  So much better effort on both sides of the ball.  The main thing that I notices was our overall team speed as compared to last year.  We look FAST.  Even with KG and PP in the game we look speedy.

If we can keep the aggressive push the ball approach we are going to get a lot of easy buckets which will hopefully overcome a lot of our scoring droughts from the last few years.  So many more weapons this year.

For the nets I thought Blatche and Wallace look like they will be excellent players for that team.  I am still not sold on B Lopez.  How Shaq calls him the 2nd best center in the nba?  I think KG at center is better than Lopez.

And Bass wonders why Doc wants him to strictly be a pick and pop player?
Yeah, moving with the ball really isn't one of his strengths. I think Bass is trying very hard to impress Doc, knowing that Sully is breathing down his neck to take over the starting 4 spot.

Is not the moving the ball. It's in relation to Bass wanting to play in the post, where he just sucks.

But at the same time, I want my 4 to crash the boards and play in the post, not pretend to be a guard all the time like Bargnani does.

http://www.celticstown.com/2012/10/16/celtics-brandon-bass-thinks-he-can-play-post-strangely-stats-confirm-it/

Apparently he's okay in the post.

Last game he also crashed the boards quite decently.

I actually thought Collins did a decent job on Lopez when KG first went out and made sure he got off to a slow start. And he's our 4th big off the bench if Wilcox and Milicic get and stay healthy. And our second enforcer.

So excited for this team.

I don't think Lopez really had his way with him.  From what I saw Collins stayed in front of him, but doesn't have Lopez's quickness.  I was surprised that Lopez didn't do more against Collins.  But I haven't watched that much of him, just have heard a lot of people say he is one of the best centers in the NBA.  I don't think he looked like it tonight.  Very average to me...

I guess I'm talking about a handful of good defensive possessions I think at the end of the 1st where Lopez was just trying to push through and establish himself in the post. He destroyed Collins in the 3rd but he shouldn't be playing that many minutes anyway.

Sully is not much at jumping , but he is always pushing , shoviing , angling , trolling after everyrebound within 8 foot of the bucket.  I don't know how many times the the ball doesn't seem to hit him square in the jersey comming off the backboard /rim .    Most players its an accident (BASS) , not with Sully, he is like Kevin Love , he is already there waiting on the ball , so a little reach or jump at the ball and its his.

Been a long time since the C's have had a TRUE rebounder. KG does it more out necessity for the team, not sure he likes it so much.

Sully loves the part of the game no one else on the Celtics is particular good at.

He is the perfect compliment for KG and PP and Green.

He really draws the pressureoff KG.
