After 6 days of practice and very competitive scrimmaging between green and white teams, the Celtics finally get to play against some new blood.  Fenerbahce is a tough team and should be a good first test for this new look Celtic team.

Doc said he plans to play the starters about half the game; he wants his players just to compete and get accustomed to playing opponents again.    They are still struggling a bit from jet lag and time difference and travel but they are more than ready to finally compete in an actual game.

Even though it's only preseason, I am really looking forward to this game. :)
And for those of you who don't follow Euroleague keep an eye on McCalebb. One of my favorite players to watch in Europe, NBA talent for sure.

Here is his dunk over Al Horford http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0toy0kh20E

Yes, yes, yes! We are officially back.

A new season, a new game thread and another TP for FL.

Here's to a great season, my dear Celtic brothers and sisters. Enjoy. And always remember:

Quote
"It's not the name on the back of the jersey that matters, it's the name on the front."

Go Celtics!

Not that it really matters, but isn't Rub Kurz still on the roster?  Didn't see him listed (and I totally missed that we brought Micah Downs to training camp.)

If you drive a very special, one of a kind, custom DeLorean, and you start NOW, you might be able to make it...or maybe not...depends on if you have it in reverse...

Anyone know who is calling the game for CSNNE?  Did they send Mike with Scal or Donny (I somehow can't see Tommy in Turkey...just a gut feeling there), or are they just jumping on NBATV's broadcast?

Rajon Rondo told me he was more confident in his 3-point shot and had been working hard on it. Form on 3 he just hit looked best it ever had

I am not watching the game, but I can tell you from years of watching Pierce that he has one of the quickest cruise control switches I have ever seen.  The chance of him giving more than a 60% effort, particularly on defense in any preseason game is incredibly slim.  I wouldn't read much into it.

Their league starts in a week. Their season started though. Actually, this is their 4th game in 4 days so I expect them to be really tired in 4th Q.

This is a difference between Bill Belichick and Doc

Bill thinks "Preseason game? No WAY am I playing Brady. I'm not stupid"

Doc thinks "Preseason game against a Euro team? Alright! I'll play Pierce and Rondo more than half the game!"

If this is Darko out of shape I can't wait to see him in shape. If this is him in shape I'm a little underwhelmed, but ok with it. He looks more athletic than I thought. Not sure how this will translate to NBA ball.

I too like Scals commentary. Waaaaaay better than DM. I don't know if this is a trial run for him or if they are actually gonna allow him to start doing some games, but he should definitely be Mike's away game partner. It shows that he really knows the Celts and Doc's way of thinking, being a former player for him and he lends that insider knowledge every chance he gets. #freescal

melo will be much better by end of the year. Nobody expected him to look like a vet in first preseason or  first regular season.

He needs lots of reps, but he still had a world class block and he is much more mobile than darko and collins. His improvement this year will be fun to watch. Will probably always make some knuckleheaded plays, like perk always did.

I've been very encouraged by what I've seen so far from Fab Melo both in summer league and in his first preseason game.  Every time I see him, I'm impressed with how well he moves on the defensive end.  With some time and patience, I think we could have a real steal on our hands.

And, by the way, you've got an odd definition of "majority."

Way to not overreact.  The guy played 9 minutes in the first game of the preseason for crying out loud.  What did you expect, 6 points, 5 rebs and 3 blocks within that span of time?

What I saw was an extremely athletic and mobile 7 footer who has the ability to protect the paint.  Whether or not he develops into a quality NBA center remains to be seen, but I liked what I saw.  Give Fab a chance to adjust to the speed of the game and get comfortable with the C's defensive system before you pass judgment.

I did not want Fab. I wanted PJ3. But I will say Fab, while raw is not a stiff out there and I thought he would be. He's right where he should be given his circumstance. He still has a lot to learn but unless you're not looking you have to see the flashes. Just give the kid time. He's got plenty of it. He just needs experience; minutes. Let him go up to Maine and play 30+ mpg and learn and make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. Now is nowhere near the time to worry about him.

Agree with all of the above regarding Fab Melo - how can you say he's garbage?

Firstly, most players reach their peak at around 27-28 years of age - Fab is only 22.  He has a good five years to learn the fundamentals, and three of those five years are set to be spent alongside Mr Garnett himself.

Secondly, I only needed to see the first 2-3 minutes Fab spend on the court to see that he is a bit of an athletic freak.  This guy is about 7'0" / 260 lbs and has the quickness and leaping ability of a small forward.

Looking at his length and athleticism I feel like Fab is going to become JaVale McGee at worst.  As best he's somewhere between Roy Hibbert and Tyson Chandler, but with more athleticsm then both.

Honestly, when I see Fab play I see a guy who has all the attributes needed to be a top 10 center in this league, but just doesn't know how to make use of it.  With the right teacher as long as he's eager to learn (which he very much seems to be) I think he's going to pick things up a LOT quicker than people think.

By midway through the season it wouldn't surprise me at all if he's already finding ways to contribute.

Watched whole game.
Not many games I watch the Celtics lose , I come away feeling happy at the end for everything else the C's got going.

For the Celtics to win big this year Jeff Green is GOING to have to be in the game playin big minutes with Pierce. Green was James Worthy like that last period. He freakin took over.  I was in awe.

EVERYTIME , the ball is comming off the rim /or backboard  SULLY is there  grabbing and shoving, postioning himself for the ball. My god !this was so refreshing to see.  He is so fun to watch work, he kid loves to battle. Wow .Sully's play is a drug for Doc , he can't get enough ...he's gonna get minutes. How can you NOT play a kid working this hard ????

Darko impressed me.  He is SO UNLIKE the fragile J O' NEAL we had. He is built like a bulldozer and people bounce off him.  He looks happy and at home on the Celtics.  He isn't expected to carry the team , just do a job in the paint.  He gives us that Perk in the paint deal we missed .

If we had had Avery , play Jeff Green another 10 minutes,  we destroy this team with KG sitting on the bench watching.

Fab's block was a Howard like sky block . The Kid has the tools, is super quick on his feet, he just needs the court time and practice to put it all together.

The best part about that block was it went right to a team mate.  I'd like to believe he planned it that way, instead of hitting as far as he could into the stands like some other guys like to do...

Your point is?  As I said in chat last night, I really liked Steamer, too, but he got more money than the Celts could/would offer him and is where he wants to be...closer to his home.  Personally, I am really happy that Greg Stiemsma found a good situation for himself.

In the meantime, for the future, and possibly nearer future than I originally thought, I really like Fab.  He is only 20, moves extremely well, is very long with good insticts, and I  hope and believe that he will mature into an excellent center for the Celtics.

I loved Ray, too...but he is no longer a Celtic either, and I am going to hope that his replacements are as good as, or better (as of now I believe we are actually improving the line up, just on versatility alone).

That takes nothing away from either ex celtic.  Just like Perk, I wll always have a soft spot and follow them out of the corner of my eye...but the Celtics are my main focus.

Exactly! The timing, the jump, the quickness are great, but if he can regularly turn blocks into outlet passes then he goes up a notch to legendary.

I'm really leery of using Russell's name in this post, but that was part of what made Bill's game so, so, very, outstanding. Not only would he block you, but he'd block it to Cousy who would have in your basket so fast your head would spin. Another part of Russell's magic was the tip block to himself followed by a fast outlet pass. We haven't see Melo do that yet. A third part was that Bill never seemed to leave the ground before his opponent and his jump was quick enough so he still blocked their shots....I've never seen anybody as good at that as he was.

I think what you saw from Jason Collins is about what to expect this year from him

You mean nothing?

Also, anyone concerned about the Courtney Lee disappearing act?

Ever had a day when nothing when your way ?  I thinking Lee had a day when he wanted so bad to shine, and everything went to pot.

The attitude and energy were clearly there , the result was not.  This calmness under fire is what makes Sully such an amazing young player.  Lee was frustrated, the harder he tried the worse things got.

I look for KG to work with FAB and get him reigned in and focus better.

It was all good,  Lee and Fab are gonna be alright .

I liked what I saw , just now  a matter of ajustments and practice for Doc and the team.

Am I the only one that wasn't overly impressed with the block?

I mean compared to just last year with Stiemsma?  That kid had some of the dirtiest blocks I've seen in a long time on this team (and very rarely sent out of bounds).

I was more impressed with that block than with most of the ones we saw from Steimsma.

The impressive thing about this one is that Sullinger was the primary defender on that play - he jumped to contest the shot initially, but didn't get high enough to affect it.  Melo could have easilly taken on a "CBF im a rookie" attitude and just left it to Sully but instead he came over to help and practically jumped OVER Sulllinger to swat that thing.

Also it wasn't just a one off, his goaltend in the first quarter was just as emphatic and was a mere half second away from being a legit block.  That's two MONSTER blocks in only 8 minutes of playing time...and that impresses me!

Don't get me wrong Greg was a hell of a shot blocker, but he wasn't super-atheletic and never got crazy elevation, he typically just got himself in good positions and then defended with his hands and body.  The plus side is that he got a lot of blocks this way, but the down side is he almost always got just as many fouls (if not more) as he did blocks. I never found that he was a very good one-on-one defender, and any time he didn't block opponents shots he was usually either letting them score or sending them to the line.

Looking at Melo he seems to play defense with his feet.  There was a play there on defense where he just got into position, stood his ground, and raised his arms in the air.  His reach was so insanely long that the defender had no hope in hell of shooting it over him , and because he was in position and not swiping at the ball there was no foul call.  That is smart defense, and to see that excites me even more than the block becuase it means he doesn't just block shots, he's a legitimate low post defender.

I honestly believe that defensively he is NBA ready right now.  It's only his offense that clearly needs a LOT of work.

Yes and no.

I wasn't concerned about the missed shots - we all know Lee can shoot, and he's proven that over the last several seasons.  I'm pretty sure he just had an off game, and it could also have to do with pre-season rust that's yet to be shaken off.

I also thought his decision making was sound.  I thought he took good shots and looked solid handling the ball, the shots just didn't go in.

I was more concerned on defense where I thought he played with inconsistent effort.  At some points he looked agile and quick footed on Defense, while at other times opponents seemed to go straight past him like he was standing still.

I don't think he's ever going to be an all-star, but he is athletic and seems fairly fundamentally sound. If he can play defense with more consistency (and his shots start falling) then I think he'll be an important part of the team.

It's so funny right now looking at this team with all the talent we have, and then thinking back to our past teams when the second-string guys we depended on were guys like Keeyon Dooling, Von Wafer, Brian Scalabrine and Leon Powe.

On any one of those teams a guy like Courtney Lee would have been our #1 scoring option off the bench, yet right once Avery returns I see him potentialy being our 4th option off the bench (behind Terry, Green and possible Sullinger if he keeps playing this way).

Our depth is just insane.
