Game Notes

This is the first and only time the Celtics will face the Warriors this season.  The Celtics are 1-1 so far on their road trip and are hoping to be 2-1 after this game.  They face a young and athletic team for the second game in a row.  Just before game time last night, the Warriors pulled off a trade that took their team by surprise. But the remaining players rallied and pulled off a 115-89 win over the Kings.

The Celtics com into the game winners of 7 of their last 10 games while the Warriors have won 6 of their last 10.  The Celtics are 6-11 on the road while the Warriors are 10-10 at home.  The Celtics had Tuesday off while the Warriors played Tuesday night in Sacramento.  The Warriors are 6-3 in the second of back to back games.

Both teams will be playing short handed and with the trade deadline hanging over their heads.  The Warriors have made one big trade.  Will they make another?  The Celtics have been hearing rumors of just about every one of them being on the block at one time or another.  It's an unsettling time both both teams.  It would be a big mistake for the Celtics to expect this to be an easy game because the Warriors just traded their top scorer.  They played well and beat Sacramento and are just as capable of beating the Celtics if they should slack off and expect an easy win.

One day away from the trade deadline,  I expect the Celtics to play like they want to show that they can still win with the core that they have.  To begin this road trip, the Celtics almost won the first game and then won the second in spite of playing a lot of small ball by necessity and playing in the second of back to back games on the road.

With Atlanta's loss last night, the Celtics are just 1.5 games out of the 6th spot and just 2.5 games behind Philly in the Atlantic division.  With a little help in the middle, the Celtics could be a dangerous playoff team.  The Warriors are 3.5 games back of the 8th spot in the West but judging by the trade just made, they are looking to next year and will be playing for a lottery spot.  But, as last night's game shows, the Celtics shouldn't look at them as an easy pushover.

This game will be the classic offense versus defense battle.  The Warriors are 9th in scoring putting up 97.8 point per game.  The Celtics are all the way down at 26, scoring just 91 points per game.   But on the defensive end, the Celtics rank 3rd, allowing just 89.8 ppg on 42% shooting.  The Warriors allow 99.6 points per game on 46% shooting.  Defense should win out if the Celtics bring their usual defensive intensity as a team.

In spite of being short handed, the Celtics have a good chance of winning this game if they come out focused and play team basketball on both ends of the court.

Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/media/act_rajon_rondo.jpg)vs(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/media/act_nate_robinson.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Nate Robinson
Stephen Curry has been dealing with a nagging ankle injury.  He went through shoot around yesterday, and was expected to start against the Kings.  With the trade going on, it's possible that the Warriors have decided to give Curry time to heal completely before playing him.  Of course, they could also decide to play him tonight but my guess is that they will keep him out.  If Nate starts, this should be an interesting match up between two former teammates.

Brandon Bass vs David Lee
Lee is a tough player and isn't above playing rough and dirty.  Bass goes from one tough player in Griffin to another in Lee.  Lee is leading his team in rebounding and so Bass needs to box him out and deny him position for rebounds and especially tip ins and put backs.  Lee plays hard every game and Bass needs to match his intensity.

Honorable Mention
Kevin Garnett vs Andris Biedrins
With the trade of Udoh to the Bucks, Biedrins is once again in the starting lineup.  He's been playing just 15 minutes per game this season and KG should have the advantage in this matchup.

Keys to the Game
Defense - The Warriors can put up points quickly and in bunches.  It will be important for the Celtics to bring their defensive intensity into this game, especially to shut down the Warriors' fast breaks since they are among the league leaders in that category. The Celtics must especially guard the perimeter as the Warriors are 3rd in the league in 3 point shooting percentage.

Rebound - The Celtics need to crash the boards to keep the Warriors from igniting their fast  breaks.   The Celtics also need to rebound to give themselves second chance points and limit the second chance points for the Warriors.   Also, the Warriors win 70% of their games in which they win the battle of the boards.

Take Care of the Ball - The Warriors can be very disruptive by getting into the passing lanes.  They are 10th in the league in steals and 8th in blocks.    The Celtics need to stay focused and not give the Warriors any easy opportunities to steal the ball or to get out on the break.

48 Minutes Effort -  The Celtics need to come out focused and take control of the game from the beginning.  The Warriors are undefeated when they lead by double digits at the end of the first quarter.  The Celtics can't afford to let themselves get down and then try to climb back in because the Warriors don't give up big leads very easily.

X-Factor
TRADE and Effort
With the trade going down late on Tuesday, the Warriors are short even more short handed than the Celtics, if that's possible.  I've seen it way too many times that a team missing players due to trade, injury or suspension rallies to play a superhuman game.  The Celtics can't come into the game expecting a win without the effort.  If they give the effort, they should get the win.

Hopefully Steph Curry doesn't play and Rondo doesn't take the game off just because the other team isn't that good.

Let's get this over with in the first half and rest people. Without Ellis and Udoh, what are we looking at? Curry/Jackson/Wright/Lee/Biedrins? This team is terrible.

Yup - Knicks his whole career before GS signed him.

Worse - I'm guessing Jackson won't clear the physical and make it to Oakland in time to play.  Curry/Thompson/Wright/Lee/Biedrins.  Bench is Nate Rob, Brandon Rush, Dominic McGuire, and a whole lot of nothing.

As I said in the thread about the trade, one Warriors player supposedly said: “If we’re giving up, I can feel my hip hurting already.”

Will GSW play with extra effort in an attempt to prove that management was wrong to trade Ellis, or will they not show up at all?  The trade combined with a SEGABABA could leave the Warriors both mentally and physically exhausted.

Pretty sure GSW plan is to tank the season and shut Curry down.

Thier team is now a bunch of scrubs, an injured Curry who is a crap shoot on if he will play game to game, and David Lee.

They will shut Curry down, and tank the season and try to get a lottery pick.

Next year, Curry/Lee/Bogut and a lottery pick is an excellent core. I see them making the playoffs next year if they can keep that core healthy.

Hold up men! Hold up men! Do not venture into the deep just now! Hold up!

This is the Warriors we are facing.  This is a team of indominitable spirit, as all fighters have.  Don't you see, from the Aztecs to Rocky Balboa to the Moors to the Crusades to the samurais, Warriors never say die.  Never!  Men, far too often have we witnessed valor but conceited men venture into arenas filled with wounded and dying warriors only to come out wounded and dying themselves!  Let us venture into the arena (and avoid those stinky Raiders fans who might be lurking in the alleys) with composed confidence and over the edge intensity.  Let us smash the boards, let us rattle David Lee, let us tear down the Golden Gate (we'll put it back up before we leave) and most of all, let us ensure beautiful ball movement so as to discourage the intimidating fans and encourage them to beat the traffic.

Ready? LETS GOOOOOO Celtics!

Well they beat the crap out of the Kings last night, so they're still going to play hard short handed.

C's need to get this one, need to get the games we should especially when they're on the second night of a back to back short handed.

Should we expect old pal Nate to start tonight? I can see him having a BIG game.  He's had a few even in his reserve role already this season.

If they play with the enthusiasm Nate will bring they'll hang around, but waaaay too many defensive mismatches in favor of the C's tonight.  As long as they come out ready to play they'll pull away.

Can't possibly ask for an easier road game.  The Celtics were off last night while the Warriors played.  GS has the god awful Biedrins at center and does not have much of an interior presence.

Udoh is gone, their best player Ellis is gone, Curry is hobbled and they are starting NATE of all people.

NO excuse for the Celtics to lose this game as they can't afford slip ups especially when there are so many tough games ahead...

It feels like the Celtics have been better about winning the games they should win this season, while falling short in the games they could win.

I wonder if the Warriors blew their post-trade emotional wad last night in a blowout win over the Kings and will play with a lack of energy tonight.

There is one problem with that. The Celtics have lost at least their last five games here and they have found every way possible to lose those games. This is Basktball Hades to the Celtics. GS is more desperate to win than we are. They have kicked butt this week.

I realized why I'm liking Bradley more...it's not that he's making the right decisions, it's that he's being more decisive.

I figured we'd start slow and the bench would carry us with energy. I'd love to see Doc open up the rotation for this game. One of those rare times when they're probably more up tonight than our starters.

I think Doc was right to play only big man against that lineup.

That said, I greatly dislike Brandon Bass as a center alongside three wings and a guard. I would have preferred to have seen Doc go to Stiemsma in there instead of Bass.

Needed Garnett in there for the final two minutes against that lineup with David Lee at center alongside four little guys.

Neither Bass or Stiemsma are effective enough options against Lee in that small-ball lineup.

Worst defense I have seen this team play since the Philly game and they had some excuses for that one(tired during back to back after 2 OTs, Philly is talented).

This GSW team has no Curry, no Ellis, no Jackson, no Bogut, no Udoh, and the Pierce and Allen can't seem to stop Dorrell Wright and Klay Thompson?

No one can stick their backside on Lee and force him away from the offensive boards?

Wow!!

We could fast-break this Warrior team right out of the building, but as soon as we get a lead, we go back to ugly jump-shots and they catch up.

Keep the pressure at the basket and our defense tight in this fourth quarter, and we can have another road win.

Ray Allen brining the ball up = almost a 100% turnover.

His ball handling is really bad at this stage of his career.

Bass is the definition of consistent.

You might as well punch in at least 12 points a game and 5 rebounds from him.

Would have been great if he was coming off the bench alongside Green, etc.

Captain Pierce had trouble on that play, Brandon Rush is a big kid. We're better moving the ball and creating good scoring chances.

A win is a win is a win is a win. It was ugly, it was horrific at times, embarrassing throughout, but it was a win. I'll take it.

Special big ups to Steamer with a terrific 16 minutes. Had some defensive lapses but 8/8 with a block and steal without missing, was great on the offensive boards with 5. Great output from all 3 bigs, Bass and KG combined for 46 points and 16 boards.

If we can win with that play from our starters, we're in good shape. The bench was the only PHENOMENAL bright spot tonight, combining for 29 points on 10-12 shooting. All of the boys on the bench has positive +/-, and Dooling with a terrific +11 in 8 minutes.

The starters...yikes.

KG winning shot makes up for 3 terrible TO passes that got Warriors back in the game.

I'm glad they're getting a day off before Sacramento.

Was it 3? I remember 2. In any case 12 big 4th quarter points

Yeah they're looking worn down. Hopefully we can take care of business before a scheduled loss against Denver. Then you've got a day off before Atlanta and then you get a 2 day break.

I really, really hope that picture of KG pointing into the air, (after the big shot), isn't the farewell image of him or the Big Four.

I know the trade-pushing atmosphere there is right now, but I personally do not want to break up our starting four this season.

Ugly defense but a sweet win ... go Celtics!

Half game out of the 6th spot, 1.5 games out of the fourth spot. Let's add some small pieces at the deadline (Hickson, a bought out Kaman) and make one last run with the old gang.

Agreed. I really hope that wasn't the going out party.

I just don't see the point unless you are getting a very legit asset in return. They've been playing well, and I know it's a pretty big if but IF our guys are hitting on all cylinders they can beat any team in a 7 game series. Especially encouraged with KG. KG is playing better than he has in a very long time

Yeah I have to say, I'm a sucker and am too emotionally attached. Unless an unbelievable deal comes along, this team has played well enough after the break to warrant another go at it.

KG is definitely a vocal leader, but man, how can his teammates not be inspired by his play of late. Talk about leading by example

Would rather have the day off for the nuggets... remember how they blew us out after a b2b early this season!

Prepare the court side oxygen tanks.
