Game Notes

The Celtics home stand continues with a visit from the Suns.  Like the Celtics the Suns are coming off a victory that ended a 5 game losing streak.   Both teams have just 5 wins and both teams have key players who are on the down side of their careers.  Much has been made of the age of the Celtics' big 3 but the Suns have a 37 year old point guard and a 39 year old small forward so they join the ranks of the elder statesmen as well.

Rondo injured his wrist in a fall in the Raptors' game.  Doc has said it's doubtful that he will play.  Rondo on the other hand has said that he will get treatment and will probably play.   It will probably be a game time decision and we'll see who wins.  If Rondo doesn't play, expect Bradley to get the start as Moore has been getting the nod with the second unit lately and Doc likes to keep the rotation intact when possible.

The win over the Raptors was good, but the Celtics have to start stringing wins together at some point to gain legitimacy as a possible contender.

Key Matchups
(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/RondoBos.jpg)  vs (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/phoenix/NashPhx.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Steve Nash
I expect that if there's any way possible, Rondo will be on the court for this one.  Unless something is found in the MRI or he can't use the wrist, I think he will be up for the matchup with 2 time MVP, Steve Nash.  He should have a speed advantage over Nash, but he will have to work on the defensive end as Nash can burn you from anywhere on the floor if you give him a step.  Nash is leading the league in assists at 10.1 per game while Rondo is second with 9.4 assists per game.

(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/KGBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/phoenix/FryePhx.jpg)
Kevin Garnett vs Channing Frye
Last season in a meeting between these two teams, Frye did a great acting job when KG hit him below the belt, falling to the floor in agony before jumping up a second later and going at KG.  For his efforts, KG was ejected from the game so this matchup could get personal for these two.  I'm expecting KG to have an extra chip on his shoulder and that he will be aggressive and play well.

Honorable Mention
Paul Pierce vs Grant Hill
At last, Pierce is matched up with a player even older than him.  Pierce has shown signs of snapping out of his slump and with the trade talks swirling, I expect the Captain to do whatever it takes to help his team win.

Keys to the Game
Defense - This is the key to every win this season and to a championship as well.   If they try to play defense in spurts in this game they will probably lose because the Suns can put points up in a hurry if they let down their guard.  The Celtics need to especially guard the perimeter as the Suns are a dangerous 3 point shooting team.

Ball Movement -  The Celtics need to move the ball and find the open man in order to stretch the Suns weak defenses.  They also need to try to get the ball into the paint and not just settle for jumpers.  If they get the ball into the post they will be able to score, draw the foul or kick out for an open jumper.

Crash the Boards
- The Celtics must make an effort to grab rebounds, especially on the offensive end, in this game.   By grabbing offensive rebounds it will prevent the Suns from getting out on the break.     Rebounding is mostly desire and effort and the team that wants it most will win the rebounding battle.  The Celtics made a big improvement in their rebounding in the Raptors' game and they need to continue that effort on the boards in this one.

Play 48 Minutes - The Celtics must play hard for 48 minutes.   They can't let up if they get a lead and they can't come out flat and play catch up the rest of the game.  The Celtics have to be the more aggressive team and attack from start to finish.   They did a good job of doing this in their last game and need to especially concentrate on a strong start again in this game.

Limit Turnovers - The Celtics must take better care of the ball. It seems that they go through spurts of being careless and making bad passes and losing focus and turning the ball over.  They have to keep their focus and not give the other team easy points off of turnovers.

X-Factors
Focus  and Rondo
The Celtics must keep their focus and try to put it all together in order to get their second straight win.  Obviously this will be a lot easier if Rondo plays.  But even if he doesn't, this team should have enough talent to win this game.

Worried about KG + JO together against Phoenix's pick and roll with Nash, Gortat and Frye.

Doubtful they (KG + JO together) have enough quickness to contain that attack.

Not surprised considering how high he was before coming down on his wrist. You know he's going to be feeling that for weeks.

I can't help wondering how significant a factor that is in Steve Nash's lack of desire to get traded away from a team that clearly isn't contending for anything despite the fact that he's in the last couple years of his career and he still hasn't won anything.

Oh my god ... Paul Pierce is the Celtics best PG without Rondo available. He needs to run the offense. Let Avery defend Nash and spot up on offense.

All the Avery Bradley lovers will get their chance to see what he can do...  Will be interesting to see him 1) lead this offense and 2) stay out of foul trouble.  Good defender, no doubt, but commits stupid fouls too far away from the rim.  Phoenix will be a tough game, and Gortat is playing very good basketball right now.

At least Nash isn't going to apply much ball pressure to Bradley.  Having a Bradley/Moore point rotation is going to hinder our ability to take advantage of that woeful Suns' D though.  Pierce is due for a big game; we'll need one.

The fouls a lot of the time aren't fouls. Its just being a no name 20 year old. Lebron would have zero fouls if he was defending like bradley, lets be real.

Having said that bradley needs to adapt and recognize. Especially playing against a Nash our a Rose. If Rondo can't get a call on Rose Bradley doesn't have a prayer. He also needs to be extra careful when we are over the limit and he is pressuring in the backcourt and on lady possessions in a quarter.

Lastly, he is extremely athletic and quick that even if he backs off a little he can still play really good defense

I kinda like how Moore has played.  He protects the ball well, and has quick hands.  I'd just tell him , don't shoot unless your completely wide open.... HAA ;D

AB and Moore putting a ton of pressure on Nash would really help our cause. They have limitless energy to expend.....just not enough fouls between them to last the whole game.

AB, Marques, Moore will probally all foul out trying to shut down Nash.   Hopefully Ray plays the savy ol vet role and stays in the game.  ;)

Official Report

Greg Willard

Willard has officiated over 1,100+ regular season games and 75+ play-off games. Willard also officiated the 1992 Japanese Opening Games in Yokohama. Before working for the NBA he accumulated 4 years of CBA officiating experience, 7 years in college level and 22 years in high school level in California. He called a technical on Yao Ming in a game in 2007 for saying "ahhhh" after a dunk. He is known for being wildly inconsistent in calling charges and blocks. Willard called the second of the Wizards games that the Celtics won earlier this season. The Celtics were called for 23 fouls in that game compared to 17 for the Wizards. The Celtics are 8-2 in their last 10 games with Willard while the Suns are 2-8 in their last 10. He isn't a homer ref with a home W/L record this season of 6-5.

Brent Barnaky

Barnaky enters his second NBA season having officiated 60

NBA games. Barnaky came to the NBA with 10 years of collegiate officiating experience, including three years of N.I.T. Tournament play. He officiated the 2008,

2009 and 2010 NBA D-League Playoffs, and the 2009 and 2010 NBA D-League Finals. He entered the NBA last season as one of five refs chosen from the D-League to officiate a handful of games the previous season. Barnaky also has spent time training and developing other officials at referee camps. He has only officiated 3 games for the Celtics previously, 2 wins and one loss. He has called 5 Suns games, 2 wins and 3 losses. His home W/L record this season is 4-4.

James Williams

Williams enters his second NBA season having officiated 61 games and officiated six NBA regular season games in 2009-10 as a non-staff official. Williams owns 10 years of experience in the collegiate ranks, having officiated for the NCAA from 2001-

2010. He also officiated two seasons in the WNBA, and has worked two NBA D-League Finals as well as the 2009-10 NBA D-League All-Star Game. Williams officiated the first of the two wins against the Wizards this season in which both teams shot 23 free throws. The Celtics are 4-1 all time with Williams and the Suns are 1-2 in their 3 games with him. His W/L record this season is 6-5

Am I the only one that thinks that Bradley could have a field day hitting mid range jumpers over Nash. Bradley doesn't have the range yet but the form on his jump shot is sweet and the height he gets on it very good. With Nash guarding him and having to play back because Bradley could fly by him, Bradley's mid range game might be there for the taking.

Or

He could get into immediate foul trouble and see little playing time.

Or Rondo could go and this whole point could be moot.

no i agree
nash can't stay with bradley and he could disrupt the suns offense, nash has great vision and is a craft vet so we'll have to see, he could have bradley fouled out in 1st minute
i think doc will have to force rondo to sit or eddie, guy is tough

Possibly the most intriguing matchup for me in this one is O'Neal vs. Gortat.  Clearly, JO has not been getting a lot of love from Celtics fans to start the season, but he's played well in his last couple of games.

Gortat's a solid, up and coming center who a lot of fans have expressed interest in seeing in Celtic green.  Would love to see JO outplay, or at least hold his own against, the Polish Hammer.

Gortat already 6 pts and 4 rebounds.  Dude's a Celtics killer recently.

And to think, people scoffed at the idea of trading for him and Nash (averaging 15 pts 10 assists on 50 / 40 / 90 shooting so far this season, btw).

I think from that range he's probably a 45% shooter once he gets confidence. His form is excellent and in college it was his shot that he hit at a high percentage.

No ballhandlers or creators on the team other than him.  Nobody puts pressure on the opposing defense inside like him, either.

Danny has definitely put together a very unbalanced roster, I have to say.  I can't really fault him because I'm not sure how much better a job he could have done, but regardless it's a poorly constructed team right now.

We must be the worst shooting team in the NBA

thing is, as a team we have an okay effective field goal percentage.  it's just that our defense isn't very good anymore, we give up a ton of offensive rebounds, and we turn the ball over a lot.  as a result, we tend to have the ball a lot less than the other team, which means they have many more opportunities to score than we do.

we are a horrible offensive team. just horrible. incredible that this can happen with kg, ray, pierce, and a bench that includes bass and pietrus.
I think everyone is so used to getting spoon fed by Rondo.

No one remembers how to work hard to create a shot.

But Avery's not doing all that much different by and large.. It's just this team is that AWFUL offensively, as if they just slid off the map this year.

After watching the HEat and LA play last night , these teams look and shoot like a pair of D-League teams.

Celtics can't seriously play a REAL team and expect to win...OMG

And even once rebuilding starts, its so hit or miss unless you can lure a top tier FA. (we won't)

Look at a team like the Bucks. They have been rebuilding since Ray left.

Lakers would have almost as bad a record as us right now if Kobe hadn't scored 40+ points 4 games in a row.

The suns defense is not so great, the Celtics can't hit a shot. LA would be blowing the Suns out by 25 at least by now, Bynum wouldn't have let Gorhead score all those shots.

How can they stand to watch themselves play on film ....I would be embarassed

I kind of knew that offensively we would not be good tonight, but giving up 16 points to Gortat and allowing 50% shooting is unacceptable.

Two free throws and all jump shots are unacceptable.

Not going to the hole against a bad defensive team when you your PG out is not acceptable.

You have to force that ball down low. You have to take it to the hole. You have play better interior defense.

The perimeter defense is good. Bradley's defensive job on Nash is good. But if your PG is out you have to pick up the slack elsewhere and KG, JO, Ray, Pierce, and Pietrus are not doing what needs to be done to win this game.

do we trade Brandon Bass to a contender (e.g. the Clippers) for some sort of minor asset (late 1st, marginal prospect etc), or do we hold onto him and try to keep him as our starting PF for the beginning of the rebuilding process?

If anyone told you before the game that mid way through the 3rd quarter Avery Bradley would be leading the Celtics in minutes played, have scored 8 points on 50% shooting, stolen the ball 3 times and held Nash to less points than he had, would you have believed them?

I know a lot of guys posting in this thread just HATE this kid and think is is awful but come on. Can you really say that he has played poorly or that he hasn't shown that he seems to have a future?

I think with some seasoning he could absolutely spell Tony Allen on defense...his offensive game? Not so much.

Tony Allen has an offensive game?

Again, I think a poor-man's Tony Allen who plays at the 1 and 2 instead of the 2 and 3 makes sense.

If talking about pure potential, I'm not sure that we need to add the "poor man's" moniker.  If he reaches his ceiling, Bradley will surpass Tony.

i'm fine with giving the team 10 or more games to get their game together. however, if they aren't 3x better than this by then, there is no point in not trading all of them. this team on the court right now is garbage, and couldn't beat 15-20 teams in the league.

so, if rondo is out for a little while, can we please play bradley a lot more than moore? not to say moore can't be a contributor, but he has basically been garbage in every game this year. the guy was the #55 pick for a reason - he's not all that good, and definitely isn't ready to play right now.

Clank?

How about Brickhawk?

Eh...  a little constructive criticism, but when people talk about negativity / baiting in the game threads, this is a great example.  The kid is having an excellent game, is shooting 5-for-9, has hit some outside jumpers and is hustling all over the court, and yet you're slamming him.  It makes people question your agenda.

as for hating bradley..or any rookie..i never do till they play a lot.enough to play out of chances....

I hated Montross the second he was drafted.
HAha, I second that! And also Joe Forte, Ron Mercer and MIchael SMith. SMith--could have been Tim Hardaway... :(
Just want to give Dana Barros some love while we're talking about 90's Celts.

He was my fav pre-Pierce/Toine

Talking about cap space and a bad contract.

We could always give Pervis another 6 year deal...

or Travis Knight.
Or Andrew DeClerq...

...could do this all night :)

You win!! I'm just going to sit here and eat my Popeye Jones chicken and watch the game.
Is this really Josh Beckett??

The starting frontcourt for the Celtics is simply killing them tonight.

Well, along with a certain #9 missing from the lineup.

Still, given their age and physical abilities, I guess this is the reality of what KG and JO are. They will completely no show about one out of every 3 games.

Gortat is the only good defender in the starting line-up.  Hill is toast, Nash is one of the worst defenders in the NBA.  The C's are only making them look good because they are so bad offensively without Rondo and Pierce hampered.

For all the negativity, is there really any doubt that is Rondo played we would have won this game going away?

Phoenix had trouble scoring 80 points and our PGs almost never took Nash to the hole or tried to run a break or push the tempo.

Take away most team's best players when they don't have a second best player that is almost as good as they are, and that team will lose most nights.

This is true, but I think it points to the greater problem: this team is basically Rondo and a bunch of role players.  Marcin Gortat would seriously be our second best player if he were on this team.  When Rondo isn't on the floor, the Celtics are really bad offensively in a number of ways.  Bottom line, this team is very flawed and lacking in both talent at the top and overall depth.

Not sure you can say that. Was Rondo the reason they got dominated on the boards by the worst rebounding team in the NBA?  Good teams win without their stars. Mediocre and bad teams don't.

Like Parcells said, "You are what your record says you are." And 5-9 is not even mediocre. It's bad.

They're playing like they know they're going to get blowed up. Very disappointing after making it a good game in the 3rd. But we never scored more than 20 in any quarter and in the end, we look like we've got a bunch of nothing.

The Big 3 have become the Big Letdown.  >:(
co-sign the bolded I was dissapointed in how non aggressive Pierce was looking the old Pierce woulda tooken this game over and had a 15-20 point quarter he was good penetrating nd wit assist but his shot was just off

Honestly, I'm really looking forward to the lottery. Who knows, maybe we get lucky and get a top 10 pick.

I hope Ainge looks at this and sees that without Rondo this team is awful.

Yea, b/c we were great WITH RR?  ::) Yea we only scored 35 the first half w/o RR but we had a game this season where we only scored 25 WITH RR! We just are not good no matter how you slice it! I'm sad! ???

Paul Pierce 38 minutes.

So what you're saying is we're going to lose the next game, too.  Great.

The big question is, do we go for the win in Washington, or save it for the game the next night in Orlando? NOrmally we'd say win both. But now, what's the point?

I could half way give them a pass when we were playing elite teams and coming up lame. But this was a bad team. They came into this at 5-9 (where we are now). And even if we would have won, it would have been our best win of the season, which is shameful of itself.

But we lost!

I can't deal with the Celtics playing this poorly against BAD teams! Now the talking by the Celtics players and Doc has all turned hollow. I didn't see any fight in this dog tonight. It's like they accepted a fate of about 24-42. I've been in favor of patience the whole time and felt like they'll pull it together. But they rolled over tonight like a dead dog.

They sucked!

As expected, without Rondo, it was ugly. Bradley was OK I guess but as in every game this season, we run after the score for 3 quarters, tie it or take the lead only to falter miserably in the next minutes and lose. So frustrating...

And looking at Rondo's wrist (pretty bad it seems) we may be in for anoter series of losses, even against the Wizards on Sunday.

Well we clearly are a better team with rondo...I mean he accounts for 42% of our offense that's nothing to snuff at...he would've imo exploited the matchup with nash and probably had a big scoring game had he played
