Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3080.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4614.jpg)
Ray Allen vs DeMar DeRozan
Ray had an off game against the Thunder but other than that game, he has been the Celtics most consistent player.  With both Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett struggling with their offense and Jermaine O'Neal insisting that offense isn't his role, the Celtics need Ray to have a big game.  Hopefully the fall he took on his shooting hand won't have any lasting effect on his shot.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4149.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3989.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Jose Calderon
The Celtics need Rondo to be aggressive yet again in this game.  He should have an advantage over Calderon and needs to use his quickness and his aggressiveness to lead the Celtics to a win.

Honorable Mention
Kevin Garnett vs Ed Davis
KG has vowed to do whatever it takes to right the Celtics' ship.  It doesn't help that he's been dealing with a sore ankle but sore ankle or not, he should be able to win this matchup.

Keys to the Game
Rebound -  The Celtics have got to crash the boards to prevent second chance points.  They finally out rebounded an opponent in their last game and they have to keep that effort up and not let it be a one game thing.  The effort they put out on the boards will usually spread to other areas of the game as well.

Take Care of the Ball - The Celtics have been turning the ball over way too much.  They will make a run in a game to tie it or take the lead and then they will turn the ball over several times only to dig themselves into a hole.  They have to make smarter passes and pay attention to the opponents so as not to allow them to get an easy steal.  They also have to handle the ball better and not drive into a crowd only to lose possession of the ball.   The Thunder scored 24 points off of 19 Celtics turnovers.  This is unacceptable.

Defense -  The Celtics must make defense a priority in each and every game.  They seem to play defense in spurts and in between they allow easy baskets and wide open shots.   They must play strong defense all game.  With the Raptors, they must particularly guard the perimeter as they love to shoot from beyond the arc.

Make Shots and Take Advantage of Opportunities -  There are times when it seems as though no one on the Celtics can hit the broad side of a barn.  They miss jumpers, layups, 3 pointers, and shots in the paint. I thing they lead the league in missed layups as there are several missed layups every game.   This inability to hit shots keeps them from taking advantage of opportunities.  They scored just 2 points off of turnovers in their last game and missed several fast break opportunities when they blew the shot or a layup.

Game Notes
This is the first regular season meeting between these two Atlantic Division teams.  They met twice in the pre-season with the Celtics winning both of those games.

With the Celtics 3rd in the division and the Raptors 4th,  they are fighting for the privilege of not being the worst team in their division.  Both teams have lost 5 games in a row.  The Celtics have lost their last 4 at home after winning their first 3 home games.   The Raptors are 2-6 on the road.

The Celtics have yet to beat a team with a record over .500 but the Raptors aren't anywhere near that discussion.  This should be a win for the Celtics.  If not, it may be time to start worrying.

X-Factors

Focus and Desire
The Celtics have lost focus in each of their losses.  They dig themselves into a hole and then play great ball to catch up and then seem to lose focus and make errors on both ends to let the other team bury them again.  They must keep their focus and play good basketball for 48 minutes.   If they want this win badly enough, and don't self destruct,  they should be able to get it.

I expect Doc to start Brandon Bass in this game.

Doc said that he was going to rotate Bass and JO based on matchups depending on whether they needed more quickness / offense or more size (defensively). The Raps don't really have anyone with size for JO to defend in the post so I'd expect Bass to get the nod here.

I was thinking that Doc would start Bass too but went with what they have in the Game Notes.  Maybe that was a threat to get JO playing better.  Or, maybe he'll start Bass.  Who knows.

Simply stated, this is a MUST win game...  We lose this one, and I think the "blow it up" idea has solid merit.

Must win tonight?

As crazy as it seems this early in the season, yes, I think this is a must win.  Have to seriously question their mental toughness if they can't pull out a win tonight.

If they manage to lose this game, I can't see how Danny could have any confidence in this group to make the playoffs and do anything once they get there.

Should be a win.

Funny, though, that even when we should win a game, I still worry that a key player might get hurt and thus kill any remaining hope for the season (hi, JO).

Good luck to the fellas tonight!  Let's start turning things around with a W here.

Our bench has more quality then most of their starters, it is not a must win game, but is a game that the Celtics should cruise trough.

The Raptors are simply a horrible basketball team.

That could be a great matchup.

I was actually impressed with the way he guarded Rose against Chicago. Unfortunately, I think Moore has passed him on the depth chart due to Bradley's inability to make shots and "get" the offense.

I think tonight will be a Johnnie Walker Black night watching the C's.

There could be a need to celebrate a win and a turnaround of this season or there could be a need to drown the sorrow of the realization of what this team is this year.

Either way I think JWB will do nicely.

Remember a couple of years ago when people were saying Portland would be crazy to trade Beyless to the Celtics for a package of centered around Davis and Tony Allen?

I wonder what happened to those people? Beyless has become nothing more than an extremely borderline mediocre backup guard.

I'd love it if Rondo were this assertive against weak defenses every night.  If it's possible for him to score 20-25 points on a given night without killing himself, he should go for it.

When so many of your teammates are old, sometimes it's a better thing in the big picture to be score-first instead of pass-first, even when you don't necessarily have to be.

Exactly. He tries too hard to get everyone involved.

No ones going to bat an eyelash at this point if he puts his own offense first. He should.

I think they see a player who isn't Avery Bradley, I guess.  I agree, though, I haven't seen much MOORE from E'Twaun than Bradley has given us.  ;)

Doesn't turn the ball over, plays within the offense and is smart.

More than can be said for Avery.

Looks like a nice start, but I can't watch it (no League Pass in the budget this year).

Can someone break it down for me and or PM me something to remedy this?  TPs will be doled out, natch.
Ditto for me, I can't justify the purchase till the C's look like a legit playoff team...

Starters dominated largely because of some inept offense by Toronto.  Lots of missed shots by the Raptors.

Toronto just had a good stretch to bring it to 8 with C's bench looking disjointed on offense and unable to recover defensively off a couple of misses

I'll give you that he's smarter than Bradley. Not sure I agree with any of the rest.

And that's two times a PG has blown by ETM for a lay-in. By Gary Forbes no less. That's a huge  minus in my book.

Doc has been too slow to move Ray Allen out of a ball-handling role in the offense.  Still prefers Ray with the bench unit instead of Pierce.  Still runs a lot of pick and rolls through Ray.

Ya defense is extremely suspect. He has shown he can play good team D but he has terrible foot speed.

I'm not sure that has the potential to get much better.

It should be Pierce.

Ray 0-4
Pierce 6 assists, 4 points
Rondo 0 assists, 15 points

Is this bizarro world?

5 games of 21 tonight, 4 games full court.....ugh..almost in game shape....now where is my GAME FACE..! LOL ...you..? Where is my advil...?
Hahaha :D I got asked to play in a Wednesday league, aside of my normal Saturday league. Would start in two weeks. I'm considering it. Game on Wednesday, practice Friday, play on Saturday. Sounds like a good spread ehy?

So how'd you do in those games? :p
not great,,,got tired, a few good hooks, then some awesome rebounds and blocks/passes in full court.... i actually like being a role player...i know it is odd......i like to score on rebounds..i am the leon powe type of player...

You had me at hooks.
i know...it is funny, but when i realized my jump done left..i developed a left and right hook shot, from the block..and a little out too..keeps 'em honest.....if i can keep my game face on..i can post em up..because they don't know where it is coming from, and most can't reach it....but i gotta leanr to booody down = body contact cause some of those kids step back, sky and block it.....anyway...you guys are the class of the blog....all of ya....and i apperciate it BIG TIME....

Weren't a ton of people on this site calling for Aaron Gray this off season.

Question: Why?

Can't block shots, steal balls, play good defense or score.

He's basically a hockey goon.
but he was great at grabbing PG's blowing by him   ;)

Me either, I've got bad knees.

I pride myself on playing good zone D and destroying zones. I guess I play older than I am.

100% agreed.

Had one hot streak last year playing with CP3.

I've liked him since his Bulls days.

I thought Gray would make a good 5th big.  Big body, can rebound some, put a body on guys, has playoff experience.

Played SF in my day. A running hook off the glass while going towards the hoop from various angles both left and right was my best stuff.

The various types of hooks that can be used really can make a smaller guy play a lot larger on the offensive end. The advent of MJ really made a whole generation go completely away from a deadly offensive weapon in this game.

Too bad too.

I remain convinced that Avery Bradley is an NBA-caliber player.  I'm not quite so convinced that he's a rotation player on a team that wants to be a contender (at least not yet), but there is a place for him in this league in my opinion.

He has nice form and elevation on his mid-range j, but he only looks comfortable shooting it when going to his right and off the dribble.

Doc has one job this year....win.

This is the last year for this group. This year, given the circumstances, its not his job to develop young talent or play young guys or any of that.

He has a 11 man rotation full of vets and talent that happens to be older. Its his job to win games and hope that everything falls into place for the C's come April, May and June to win it all.

That's it. Win.

So I for one have no problem if he NEVER plays the rooks and youngsters.

I only saw part of the games (didn't have enough time nor the courage to listen to the Toronto announcers), easy win against a bad team. No progression for the team in sight but a much needed win in the bag so I will take it.
