Game Notes
This is the first meeting between the Celtics and the reigning NBA Champs.  The Mavs won the series last year 2-0, but both teams have undergone a considerable makeover since last season.  The Celtics are 3-1 at home while the Mavs are 1-3 on the road.

The Mavericks are fresh off their visit to the White House and are playing in the second of back to back games, having beaten the Pistons in Detroit on Tuesday night.  The Celtics are coming off a rare 4 day break after their embarrassing loss to the Pacers on Friday.

The Celtics should get a boost from the debut of Mickael Pietrus, who is finally ready to play after taking a couple of weeks to rehab from off season knee surgery.  He is ready to play and Doc said that his practice on Tuesday was sensational.  The Celtics can use his toughness and scoring off the bench.  Marquis Daniels missed the last 2 practices and may miss this game so Pietrus' debut couldn't come at a better time.

The Celtics need a win in this game to erase the memory of the debacle against the Pacers.  Both the Celtics and Mavs have struggled out of the gates this season.  Hopefully the Celtics can get on track and get a win in this one.

Key Matchups
(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/RondoBos.jpg)  vs (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/DWestBos.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Delonte West
These two have gone up against each other many times as teammates. Now, they face each other on opposite sides.  I'm sure Delonte will be intent on proving to the Celtics that they made a mistake by not signing him this season so Rondo will have a fight on his hands.

(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/KGBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/dallas/DirkMVP.jpg)
Kevin Garnett vs Dirk Nowitski
This should be a great matchup.    Dirk has the capability of taking over a game and KG will need to concentrate on his defense to keep him from having a big game.  Both have been playing well and so this should be fun to watch.  Hopefully KG comes to play and is able to keep Dirk from having a big night

Honorable Mention
Ray Allen vs Vince Carter
Ray has been the most consistent Celtic so far this season and has been averaging a mind boggling 63.4% from beyond the arc.  Vince Carter has never been known for his defense and even less for fighting through screens on defense.  Hopefully Ray will continue his hot streak in this game as well.

Keys to the Game
Rebound - Rebounding is so crucial to getting a win.  When the Celtics put out the effort to grab rebounds, more often than not, they are going to get the win.  In their last game, the Celtics allowed the Pacers to out-rebound them 47-36.  The Celtics have to give a better effort on the boards if they want to win this one.

Defense - Defense is always crucial to getting a win.  Defense wins games is not just a cliche, it is the truth.  The Celtics must play tough team defense in this and every game.  Against the Mavs, defense is especially crucial because they can put points on the board very quickly.

Bench Play - The bench has been inconsistent so far this season and has struggled to score at times.  They should get a boost from the debut of Mickael Pietrus.  Doc described his performance in practice as sensational.  After their performance against the Pacers,  the Celtics could use some sensational.

Score the Ball - The Celtics scored just 25 points in the first half of their last game.  They have to run the offense and hit their shots.  They can't expect to win if they shoot 39% and score 25 points in a half.

X-Factor
Rest vs Rust
The Mavs are playing in the second of back to back games while the Celtics have had 4 days off.  The 4 days of rest hopefully will result in a rested and sharp Celtics team that has worked out the kinks in the offense rather than a team that looks rusty because they haven't played in 4 days.

great job.

first real test of the season for us now we've had a few games to get into our rhythm and had a few days off to practice.

We could get blown out at home if we aren't careful here.

Can't wait to see Pietrus either.

I give you your 1100th Tommy point too.

Ah, bummer, Kidd is still out. Too bad he's going to miss this one.

Kidd is still one of the most enjoyable players in the league to watch. Always love watching him and Rondo go at it too.

so looking forward to this game.  it should be a great matchup.  Dallas looks better on paper -- can't believe they've had so much trouble this year.

I'm trying not to pin so much on a single game but it'd be tough to shrug off a loss in this one.  They've had lots of rest (and it's early in the season still), practice time and Pietrus is joining the team which fills the hole left by the one injured player (Quisy).

i want to see a blowout tbh the c's can do it they just need to be more confident with their shooting the bench and rebounding is key

The real season begins now! No more excuses!
Looking forward to Delonte's return, MP's debut and KG's defense on Dirk..
On a side note, seems Odom doesn't fit well with the Mavs.. think we can trade for him? I mean he can be a free agent next season (TO) and he's a PF/SF with length, range and experience.. Don't care if he was a Laker but he'd be a good addition here..

I don't know... this game screams "trap" to me. We should win this -by all means- since Dallas has had a crappy start, we've had the rest and have our full line-up, where they go without their starting point.

Yet, I don't feel comfortable, at all.

Is this going to be the "make it or break it" game? Are we going to play lousy and still win? Are we going to play decent and still lose?

I'd like a blowout, either way, so that we get a decent statement, so that we're either going to be out of excuses, or playing like champions. Obviously, I'll be cheering for the latter :p

It's time.

LET'S GO CELTICS!!!

Gotta beat this team. Especially when they're on a back to back, otherwise its safe to say we cant give good teams much of a fight this year.

We should win this one due to the amount of rest we had and I expect to see a lot of jumpers that will fall through.  Let's go Celtics, stay conditioned!!!

Agreed -- Vince hates battling through screens. Ray can get a lot of joy against V.Carter.

Our defense has been making opposing point guards look amazing, so I'm concerned about the kind of production we'll see from Delonte / Roddy Beaubois tonight.

agreed - no excuses tonight.  there's nothing holding them back against a win tonight.  if they lose, it'll provide some insight into whether this team has the talent to compete or if they have the heart to compete.

KG's defense on Dirk..

Or lack thereof.

Dirk averaged 27 points vs Boston last season, and 32 the year before that. He usually goes off against them, so I'm expecting a big game. Hopefully the Celtics win regardless of Dirk though.

I am. I don't expect Pietrus to be able to log too many minutes with his conditioning most likely being off. And if Daniels is out, it means Bradley will get some run. Plus, I want to see the second unit of Bass, Pietrus, Dooling, Daniels, and Wilcox or Steamer start to build some continuity. The sooner the better.

You can only call games "trap" if your team is the strong favorite to win. And given the Celtics current showing, I don't think they should have any "trap" games this season at all.

Sometimes team show rust after an extended break.  It would not surprise me to see the Mavs win the first quarter or perhaps the first half, then the C's to blow them away in the 2nd half when the Mavs get winded.

This game is big to me in getting a read on this team.

The Mavs are playing the second of a back to back roadie and are playing without a starter as Kidd isn't playing.

The Celtics are coming off a four day break and have been in their own homes sleeping in their own beds for over week. They also will be playing with a full compliment of players for the first time all year.

The Celtics should win. I could care less how they win, but they should win.

If they come out with another poor showing like they did against Indy, that's a bad sign and I think I may need to adjust my long term prognosis of this team for this year.

I would actually like for this game to be a close game until the fourth where we pull away, I think if we were to get up big too early we would fall asleep and think it's a W, then the Mavs catch a second wind (their bench) and the hack away and beat us in a comeback! I would be okay if I thought we would get a big lead and hold onto it but they haven't shown me (this nor last season) that they can hold onto a big lead in "big" games! I'll definitely take a blowout W but I'd rather see a focused 5pt win where we show measurable improvement!

I agree with most of that, 'cept for the "rather see a focused 5pt win" bit. I'd still rather see a huge blowout, mainly because I think we haven't seen that much in the past 2 seasons. A blowout would at least confirm that we're definitely still contending for a title. What I loved most about the 07/08 season, was that we had the occasional blowout win, and combined them with hard fought wins.

Right now, we have hard fought wins, and blowout losses :p

Doc needs to wake up, smell the cofffe, and figure out that Rajon needs at least 1 if not 2 younger sets of legs in the starting lineup. Start Wilcox or Stiemer, mabe Petrius/Quis, bring JO and (maybe) Ray off the bench. Mix and match, legs and craft.

Ready for back to back 25 point first halves anyone.

This is mind boggling.

Dallas is not playing good defense.

This team is not hitting shots, is having the wrong guys take shots, and is not moving the ball nearly as much as they should be given the passing talent they have.

Dallas is a bad rebounding team and they are killing the C's on the boards.

C's shooting 36%. Dallas shooting 53%.

This must be frustrating as hell for Doc because this team is not this bad. They are actually extremely good but they are just playing out of sync and without any passion or urgency to start games.

We should look great.

I thought the excuse for our lackluster play was because we're an older team and we didn't have enough rest. Now we've had four days of rest and we look like we just came off of a back to back to back.

I don't know what to believe anymore.

its true, but I'm  bit of a hater. I'm warming to him, but an NBA guard shouldn't have 1-5 chance of dribbling off his foot everytime he touches the ball. It just unnerves me when he handles the ball.

Did anyone see that the Sixers are #1 on Hollinger's BS power rankings??
Hollinger's power rankings take a few weeks before they mean anything.

Just not enough games to give it a proper sample size at this point in the season.

I really hate all this swatting at the ball we do instead of actually rebounding with 2 hands. 98% of the time we swat it right into the other teams possession SMH.
yeah, that's really aggravating.  need to just grab the ball

That last Mavs possession is EXACTLY what I'm talking about. 3 chances to score. 3! Because we keep love tapping it all over the place. Its disgusting.

I would like to see Chris Wilcox get some court time alongside the Big Four tonight.

I think his skill-set and athleticism could give Boston a valuable weapon against that Mavericks team. That quickness that Wilcox plays with both in transition and in the half court cutting to the rim. Get some more movement happening, force the Mavs defense to keep an eye on him. Create some space for the better players to do their thing. Too much stagnant play offensively from JO.

are you serious? they have lost to every decent team they have played....they look slow and horrible after four days off...dallas is coming off a back to back...

When we lost the first 3 games everyone said that it was because we were without Pierce. As soon as he returned we would be fine.

I doubt the performance he gave in the last 2 games is what everyone was waiting for to save us.

He's not done but his last two games have been abysmal. He will bounce back.

Guys, I admit that I didn't watch the first half, but I watched the half time show and I sat down and just watched the first 10 minutes of the 3rd quarter, and I don't know what else to say.  This is just not a very good team.  I don't know what other conclusions there are to come to, or what excuses can be made to adequately cover the level of mediocrity that's being shown out there.  It's not like this is just one game, either.  They've looked pretty mediocre in every game this season other than the three they've played against god awful teams (Pistons, Wizards).

Danny has to start seriously looking at some major trades, and sooner rather than later.

15 points in the first quarter and only 14 in the 3rd.  That's a terrible, terrible offense guys.  I don't care what team you're facing.  It's not like Dallas is an elite defensive squad this season.

This kind of performance coming after that Pacers debacle is really, really unsettling.  There are some really big questions that everybody on the roster, the coaching staff, and management has to ask themselves after what we've seen to start this season.

We're rapidly transitioning from "disappointing off-season" and "slow start" to "gradually unfolding train crash."

If I'm Doc Rivers, I am not putting JO back in this game.

I am staying small in the backcourt with Bradley, Rondo and Dooling. Then going with Pietrus or Ray as my three. And using Bass, Garnett and Stiemsma as my big men. That is my fourth quarter.

Keep the quickness and the energetic players out there.

Dooling is a SG not a PG. He's convinced me.

Meanwhile, Kobe has 20+ points in the first half again tonight.

Is it too early to speculate that the knee platelet treatment he got was basically blood doping (cheating)?

4 extra points for Mavs off the techs and free throws.

This team might be even worse than I thought. The centers are atrocious and dooling has no clue how to run the offense. And what is wrong with pierce?

Pierce is going through whatever Odom was going through to start the season . . . out of shape, out of rhythm, etc.  He'll get there, I'm sure, unless his injury is lingering (or he picks up another injury).

As for the centers, I think we just have to accept that we're going to get very, very little from that position this season, barring some major trade.  I think that's going to be the major bar to this team going anywhere in the post-season, honestly.  No identity or presence in the paint at all.

I'm okay with Dooling.  We could do better for a backup pg, but we could do worse, too.  We really need the rest of our bench -- with the exception of Bass -- to be much more productive and reliable, though.

There's just no chemistry or consistency among the bench guys.  Dooling is a net zero for the team, I think, which is fine, but Bass is probably the only guy on the bench who is regularly a net positive.  That's a huge problem.

eh, they played like garbage for most of the game, and only put together a decent performance in the 4th, but badly fumbled it at the end.  they didn't deserve this win.  dallas played badly too, but ultimately they had a guy who could score against all odds with the seconds winding down.

make no mistake, they shouldn't have even been in this game at the end.  on four days rest, facing a team on the second night of a back to back, they were killed on the boards, turned the ball over a ton, and couldn't carry a solid lead into the fourth quarter despite having a staggering advantage in free throws.

the shot from nowitzki and ensuing turnover were just the icing on this feces-cake.

Aside from the game tying 3, PP played like an absolute bum.  What a ****g team we have after 4 days of rest.  Although I have to say that Rondo's bad inbound pass was the only pass he could make.  Had to throw it down low.

But [dang] man, Dallas played like a tired team and still beat us.  I can't wait to get our butts whooped this Friday with the Bulls!  ::)

He did exactly what he always did with Big Baby, leaving him in the fourth at the end of almost every game in place of the starting C.

at least they played hard...that is about allI got after the last 2 games. it sure would be nice to win a couple of these though
they didn't play hard soon enough or long enough.  that's part of what really kills them.

i am trying to be positive...but if they meandered through the first 3 quarters and it cost them in the end.
being positive is good -- difficult on a night like this

We lose on a circus shot and fluke of a turnover to the defending champions, and now we will get to hear about how we should blow up the squad. Lovely.

make no mistake, they shouldn't have even been in this game at the end.  on four days rest, facing a team on the second night of a back to back, they were killed on the boards, turned the ball over a ton, and couldn't carry a solid lead into the fourth quarter despite having a staggering advantage in free throws.

the shot from nowitzki and ensuing turnover were just the icing on this feces-cake.

The fact remains that Boston was very much in this game throughout. Dallas went on a run, and Boston answered. Dallas went on another run and Boston answered. The defense was solid again. I'm not that upset with tonight.

Not looking good the next 3 games either, anybody ever think it would ever be realistic seeing this team start this season 4-9? It's looking pretty realistic now.

This Friday is gonna be real pain.  :'(

did doc rivers get out coached by assistant coach? leaving bass in on defense is inexcusable.

He did exactly what he always did with Big Baby, leaving him in the fourth at the end of almost every game in place of the starting C.

Probably it's a magic formula to try to help the aging big 3..

on defensive possession Bass shouldn't be on the court period.  big baby is superior on defender than Bass. He was highly praised for his help defense. nonetheless, Bass has to subbed-out on defensive possessions.

WHAT IT MEANS
Nine games in and Boston still owns no victories over playoff-caliber teams. Despite a four-day break before Wednesday's game -- and the fact that the Mavericks were coming off a back-to-back in Detroit -- the Celtics watched the defending champs come up with the big plays in crunch time. The schedule doesn't get any easier with Chicago (Friday) and Oklahoma City (Monday) scheduled for visits (and a trip to Indiana on Saturday). Boston drops below .500 again at 4-5 and still can't put together a full 48-minute effort.

Really think the C's will be 4-8 or 5-7 a week from now.  Where will the panic meter be at then?  20/10?

The Mavericks are also old and on the second night of a back-to-back, I am concerned, not quite panic level though.

Terrible inbounds bounce pass by Rondo
A bounce pass at the shins at that distance is really hard to handle, especially when you need the receiver to immediately go into his shooting motion.

What a maddening game. Yes, the way Boston played most of the game, it probably shouldn't have even been in it at the end, but that's just it -- they made SO many mistakes, just way too many mental blunders. I saw a lot of good things, but after four days of rest and practice, and against a team that was on the second half of a back-to-back -- on the ROAD nonetheless -- Boston's play tonight was largely inexcusable. Bass turning INTO a double team, Garnett flopping in an attempt to draw a foul but instead giving Mahinmi an uncontested shot, Garnet getting blocked TWICE in the fourth, Boston playing good defense only to surrender the offensive rebound -- multiple times, Boston rallying multiple times to tie or go ahead and then doing something foolish to fall behind again, Boston missing three straight shots with the scored tied 77-77, and in the end, Boston playing TERRIBLE defense on two straight possessions near the end to fall behind by five. I'm trying to stay positive, but this kind of performance under the particular circumstances is discouraging.

4-8 or 5-7? What's the difference, really? Some people have said that all that matters is having Boston playing good once the playoffs roll around, but right now Boston isn't a playoff team -- literally, they're not. And at this rate, even if they end up playing well and make the playoffs, it's probably not going to be as a top-4 team, which means they won't ever have home-court advantage and will have an uphill climb the entire way, and all because they couldn't get their act together early enough (if at all).

Wow. Tough one. I thought, even though we did hit a lot of clutch shots and managed to stay in the game, that we were going to lose anyway because we simply couldn't get a rebound. I know this team has sucked at rebounding since 2010 but wow, I never thought they could get worse than before and yet they did... they probably don't even know anymore how to GET a defensive rebound.

It's even more frustrating because we usually manage a lot of great defensive possessions only to give the other team the offensive rebound and the easy bucket.

Also, you're going right into the wall when Pierce and Ray are having an off night. And KG once again bricked and bricked again in the 4th, he misses even the easiest layups... so frustrating. And his defense on Nowitzki for the biggest shot of the game was plain stupid, you don't get in his face only to give him a free way to the paint!

The only positives in this one are Rondo's free-throw shooting and Pietrus' immediate impact. Loved his energy on defense and offense, you can tell he wants to play so badly and he looked good physically.

Now, losing this game when the Mavs were on a back to back and us with 4 days of rest is just inacceptable. We better win the tough stretch coming up or we're definitely in trouble.
