It'll be very interesting to see how Doc uses Shaq off the bench. How many minutes does he get? Will he be a go-to scorer for the second unit or used as a complementary offensive player like he was with the starters?
And how does Spoelstra use Joel Anthony as a result? From his comments, it sounds like Dampier is his first choice defender on Shaq? So how much playing time does Joel Anthony lose? Who does Joel Anthony matchup against then? At power forward against BBD?
After Game 3, does Spoelstra adjust his starting lineup for the rest of the series. Drop Big Z from the rotation. Insert Joel Anthony into the starting lineup to pit him against Jermaine ... to make sure he gets more playing time and that he won't have to play against Shaq defensively. Then does he use Dampier or Big Z off the bench against Shaq?
Looking forward to seeing how the coaches respond to this one.
Let's not play Big Baby at Center!
I'd like to see Doc use Jermaine O'Neal for the first 7 minutes of each quarter and Shaq for the final 5 minutes of each quarter.Except Shaq is not a great FT shooter. I would rather see JO at the end of the 4th quarter for that reason alone. I would be thrilled if Shaq could actually play 20 minutes. I'll be happy with 15.
That'll give Jermaine around 28 minutes and Shaq 20 minutes.
It also has Shaq finishing the half and fourth quarter alongside the Big Four + has Jermaine in the second unit as a defensive anchor in second and fourth quarters.

* Javie tossed Rivers from a forgettable loss in Phoenix in January (the same game Kevin Garnett got ejected from for his low blow on Channing Frye). Rivers was fined $15,000 for not leaving the court in a timely manner.
Said Rivers of Javie: "He actually came into our huddle. We were standing there, he came up to us. I'll tell you exactly what was said. He said, 'You guys are complaining way too much.' And I said, 'Well, let's make the right calls.' And his answer back was, 'I'll make a call for you.' And that's how I got the tech... I didn't have any choice words for him. I didn't say a word. I didn't even swear then. You know what I said? 'It's about the game. It's not about one individual.' That's all I said, over and over again."
* Delaney drew the ire of Shaquille O'Neal in a Christmas Day matchup against Orlando in which the Big Shamrock fouled out in only 13 minutes of play during a nationally televised battle.
O'Neal was fined $35,000 for his comments on the officiating.
Said Shaq of Delaney: "I guess they came out to see No. 26 [Delaney's uniform number] today. He was a great player out there today... [Fans] paid all that money to watch No. 26 play. If I was a fan, I would be p---ed. You pay all that money for good seats, you have two of the best guys in the [NBA] sitting on the bench, out of the game. That is what happens when you have control freaks out there."
* Rivers and Kennedy landed in the headlines during the 2008-09 season after Kennedy gave Rivers the gate in a game against the Chicago Bulls. Rivers was fined $25,000 and Kennedy was also fined for the incident.
Said Rivers of Kennedy: "The technical on which I got thrown out was the most unprofessional technical by a ref I've ever had. He stood there and goaded me and goaded me and stared at me. Look at the film. I actually walked away. He asked me, 'Where do you want the ball?' And I said, 'Ask them,' talking about my players. That's my right to say that, and he walked away... He stood there and stared me down and stared me down and goaded me until I turned around and said, 'What?' That's when I got thrown out of the game. In a [5-point] game? Think about that."

Javie's home W/L record is 34-20 this season.
People are focused on Shaq making the difference, but Rondo will win or lose the next two games for us imoAgreed -- Rondo is the engine to this Celtics team especially against this Miami squad.
Yuck, that is one horrible officiating draw. I guess that Stern is rather upset that one of his teams the Lakers are struggling right now. So he wants to make sure his other team Miami Heat makes it.
This could be a rematch of the Mavs vs Heat Finals in Antione Walkers only title season (and Shaq's last NBA championship too come to think of it).
This game has historical significance to me..... I am putting the maximum preperation I can (you know, the lucky charms and what not).... I hope that you fellow bloggers are doing your comfortable routine and Lets Git R Done and not go quitely in the night.
Larry Bird never let his teams lose in this situation. It will be up to Paul Pierce and Rondo to follow the traditions of Bill Russell, John Havlicek, Bob Cousy, Dave Cowens, and of course Larry Bird.
OK Back to work, this is my last appearence with the blog until Celtics Stuff Live at the end of the game.

Shaq helps Rondo out. Big difference in Rondo's performance when shaq played the first half of the season as opposed to when he sat.
"Shaq will play tonight, according to Doc Rivers"
"Doc: "Shaq is a go. With him it will be the eye test and whatever you think he can give you...he looked good this AM.""
"Rivers gave no indication of minutes. "Whatever he can handle.""
saw this in another forum...

A little off topic, but Perk has 11 boards in the 3rd as the Thunder are pulling away from the Griz.
If that's true, then it should be relatively easy for Shaq to make an impact. :DPeople are focused on Shaq making the difference, but Rondo will win or lose the next two games for us imoAgreed -- Rondo is the engine to this Celtics team especially against this Miami squad.

def. agree with this... a guy that he can just feed for easy dunks... because the defense is too busy guarding ray, paul and kg.
Think about it... we had Nenad and Big Baby as our centers for alot of the season... no easy points..even they were open underneath it still would take them SOME effort to dunk the ball when someone is even remotely close...same with ray, paul and anyone else on our team. KG i guess would be okay with easy dunks.

I love the energy so far. This team came out ready to play. And not a minute too soon!
Wow, this is the best the C's have played in this series by far...love it!!
let's see what Le Hype do out of the huddle. Woo-hoo, the alley-bloop!
Just to point out an absurdity -- if the score were reversed the usual suspects would be saying 'game over'.

Long way to go, but high energy start for the C's. Keep it going!!
Shaq is hurt bad. Eesh.
Shaq looks severely hobbled out there. But he's contributing.
Aww... Too bad.Defo. Let's go guys! :D
I'll take +6, though.
Shaq clearly looks limited, you can tell by the way he skipped up the court. But his size alone makes him an asset.Yeh, he's huge, in all kinds of ways.
1st quarter: terrific start -- smart and aggressive play. nice lead built up.
last half of quarter: dumb passes and poor ball movement as well as lack of team rebounding -- Heat start closing the gap.
Those basketball commercials always give me a chuckle. We ILP viewers don't even get those. We're stuck with an NBA CARES screen, with some annoyingly short looping bit of "music".
this unit cannot get outplayed by the likes of james jones, anthony, chalmer and miller. the bench has has to contribute right.bench needs to contribute but they're still looking like crap on O
and miami gets some garbage points...makes me mad

You call that music?! I'd never thought I'd say it, but I've been praying for some ads every now and then.. It can be a bit of a pain to stay up all night, and have to survive those timeout breaks..
unbelievable. Heat bench is taking this team to task again. a bunch of nobodies everyone here considered scrubs are killing us. when is Doc going to get a game plan together that addresses this mess >:(
All the continuity we started game with -- out the window with 2nd unit. Oh yeah...Danny, horrible trade. >:(

What does the trade have to do with it?
I'm pretty skeptical that Delonte, Wafer, Harangody, BBD, and JO would be better than the group out there right now.
Oh, come on. Now Obama is responsible for the Bill Russell statue? I hate announcers.
Who is supposed to be boxing Joel Anthony out? Because they're doing an awful, awful job.Jeez ... Anthony is killing the Celtics on the offense glass
I seriously give up with these refs.
Hate to say this but the Heat have kept their cool. C's look out of sorts.it's easy to do when you're getting every call while the other side isn't getting them. The refs are part of the story tonight big-time.
Oh, and of course they call a foul on Wade's 3.Ray hit him on the arm. really stupid on Ray's part. why would you hit someone 27 feet from the basket??
Any chance we can bring Anthony in as a free agent next year? He's what we're missing.I think Anthony has a five year deal.
If the Heat get consistent bench, good luck.
If the Heat get consistent bench, good luck.
it's their bench that has been killing us tonight, we dominated their starters
Well, at least this current funk isn't anything a good long off-season of relaxation can't fix.
HOW DO YOU LEAVE ANTHONY ALL ALONE IN THE PAINT?????????Well we don't have a Center it appears
Does of reality: refs are not the problem (they are a problem, but not THE problem). Our bench stinks. Period. Miami is simply better than Boston and unless Tibs phones in some defensive schemes, it will remain that way.
And don't even begin to question my love of the Celtics. I am just an NBA fan with his head in the sand. Boston will fight, but Miami is simply better right now.

Delonte stinks. He's been about as bad as Baby in these playoffs.I don't think we are seeing the best of Delonte. He has struggled since coming back from injury. Not the same player we've seen in the past (over the last couple of years). Out of sorts.
And back to jump shots. Theyve completly gone away from all that gave them the good start.

The Heat have turned Rondo into jump shooter.
mark it down, Doc finally went with Green instead of Davis
boston has to have the lead going into half. miami has played poorly and still lead
The Heat have turned Rondo into jump shooter.
I'd say 40% of it is the Heat, and 60% is Rondo.
No, Paul had the midrange game going and KG was working inside. I think they got away from that. Actually, the subs come in and its like no one wants the shot. Except Davis. And back to jump shots. Theyve completly gone away from all that gave them the good start.
Actually, what gave them a good start was admittedly solid defense and a lot of tough jump shots from Paul Pierce falling. Now that the jumpshots aren't falling, the team is down.
In the NBA, you have to be able to score points in the paint and draw contact inside to get to the line. Those are two things this team can't do consistently.

They've taken away his passing lanes and he's afraid to get stuffed at the rim.
Paul just can't effectively get to the rim anymore. That, perhaps more than anything else, is the fatal difference between this team and the '08 team. I remember when Paul could drive inside and get to the free throw line very consistently.
I cant stand Wade
I will say this much, I don't like the way Doc is using JG as a spot-up shooter - he's just too good in the post for that.
it is obvious boston will get no fouls called inside tonight

All contact on heat players is a ticky tack foul, and all contact on the Celtics is a play on.Rondo isn't in the game mentally tonight. He looks like a scared little boy playing amongst men.
I don't know what Rondo is doing, he is so afraid of the Lebron help block from behind that he wont even try and penetrate.
Nobody within 20 feet of Rondo, literally...
... and we manage an ugly turnover.

so wade and james get calls every time they drive...but boston gets clubbed and get zero. just obvious the refs are looking out for miami.
Rondo may have 7 assists, but he has been ineffective. Delonte looks hurt again and shaq really should not be on the floor because he can't move. Very disappointed that they are behind at home. Jeff green makes the least impact of any player I have seen on a basketball court.

yeah..but it is disappointing to predict they wouldn't be able to hold an 11 point lead..
Down 2 at halftime, normally I would feel optimistic about the 2nd half. But I just don't see any posive things here. We're down 2 at home, Rondo is pure garbage, the bench is garbage too (except Delonte), we keep losing the ball by ourselves (i.e with no pressure from the Heat), we make dumb plays, we can't stop Anthony (you would think Doc would have made adjustments after 3 games but no), and we can't get any calls when we drive to the basket.
It just feels like we're hanging on and the Heat can on a 10-0 run at anytime. I hope the C's prove me wrong in the 2nd half.
I know the naysayers are going into "I told you so" modeNo offense m8, just saying that the topic has been fairly clean when it comes to the whole "2 sides" thing, no need to address it.

KG is the only one playing with any fire and Pierce started that way but has now disappeared
Rondo and the bench don't even feel like going there can't see how we take the game unless something changes

Rondo has hardly been in this series. I'm really not sure what it is, but the difference between Rondo in these playoffs vs. Rondo in the playoffs last year is incredible.
We're only down by 2. I'll take it.We should be up by about 6. We're getting killed at the center position.

After the way the Celtics started this game, I think being down by 2 at the half is pretty disappointing. They started this game looking like they wanted to take over and not let go. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, they weren't able to sustain it.

While I hear what you're saying, this is an extremely winnable game. I'm going to do my best to keep a positive attitude. This very well could be one of the last times we see this team together, and I intend on going down cheering.

at least the lakers aren't going to tie our title record
I will say this though : Doc should try the Big 4 + Shaq lineup just once and soon to see how it works. My guess is that he is not enough confident in Shaq's conditioning to try this one but in my opinion he should roll the dice. Could be bad but could also be a positive difference maker and a boost.
Jermaine is looking quite good on D btw. Seriously.
"Doc should avoid Glen Davis at all costs."Baby has his moments but the mathcups vs MIA arent in his favor.
This should be framed & bronzed.
boston has to figure out how to stay relevant next year
at least the lakers aren't going to tie our title record

I'm really afraid that the Lakers will get Dwight Howard.

i hate how LA counts the title in minnesota...that is like the raven counting all the old cleveland browns titles...
It is said that Davis thinks he can move on and become an NBA starter.
It is said here that Davis is crazy.
Davis hasn't checked a soul off the glass in this series.
As horrific as he is offensively, he's even worse on the other end of the floor.
Does anybody know how many blocks per game the Heat are averaging in this series?Yeh, somewhere around five hundred twenty six per game.
good start to the half. let's see how long it can lastHMMM, less than 2 minutes. brilliant, careless turnover by Rondo trying to get cute. ::)

PIERCE!!! Bosh has been non-existant in this series. Love it.
rondNO!At least Rondo has decided he wants to take the game on finally. Edited. Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline. is up with this team? It's got to be mental as they've collectively just switched on mentally and burnt the Heat early in the 3rd. It's so frustrating to watch what they are capable of doing when they feel like it.
Our starters have been great tonight - its the bench (minus D.West) that's let us down.
Roger that. Our starters have been great tonight - its the bench (minus D.West) that's let us down.
Yep. Doc is going to have to ride the starters into the ground tonight. I don't want to see BBD or Jeff Green lousing up this game.
Commentators really suck btw. We go on a run and they just shut up. For fools sake man, you're here to add flavour, not to talk up the bloody Heat.

They make it seem like a bad thing when we go on a run. Really, really sad.Btw, this is a "first" for me. I don't like calling out commentators for being biased... but this is just ... wrong. They don't even TRY to make me feel good about my Celtics :(
"I feel that our bench is way stronger than theirs, we’re way deeper than [Miami's]," sixth man Glen Davis said. "We just got to make sure we use our depth."

I really hope the media at least kills Wade since the refs will take no action, that was a really dirty play.Doc should put someone in to hard foul Dwayne Wade and take him out. That dirty prick is getting away with murder.
Put Shaq out there, an arm for an arm, and I'm not joking.
Even the biggest optimists can say this series over now
Those initial replays didn't look so bad ... but those later ones? Yeesh ... not good.I'll admit the initial angle they showed it at wasn't that good, but the second angle basically made me want to throw up.
Poor Rondo.
Even the biggest optimists can say this series over now
This series will be over when one team wins four games. It's not over yet. I like the grit they're showing.
that was intentional by wade. Doc needs to send a goon out and take him out.
here's to a blown out career ending knee injury Wade.
You still love Wade Roy??
He's a fricken scumbag
Should we start Delonte next game, or start Ray at PG and put Green in the starting lineup?Good question. Not sure.
someone really just needs to lay out Wade. seriously.
Agreed, wasn't intentional (the injury, not the pull-down). Not particularly dangerous / malicious play either. Those initial replays didn't look so bad ... but those later ones? Great, great quarter.

Not fair. I think DWade made a frustration play but it ended up badly because Rondo landed awkwardly. Out of that entire squad, I still like Eddy & Wade best. You still love Wade Roy??

Yea, he is dirt, put in Kristic to injure him!!

Look on the bright side - we should be glad Rondo didn't hurt his shooting arm, or his jumper might be shaky for the rest of the series.
that was the first quarter in the entire series that the C's completely dominated from beginning to end. about freaking time. I can only hope they come out with determination in the 4th to put this game awayIt was the first quarter in the series which they showed team intensity from buzzer to buzzer.
Is anybody else concerned that Rondo is playing out there while only using one arm?Nah. All he needs.
Green is doing some work!
Green stepping it up, like it... like it.Have to wonder where this dormant energy and life has been. He looks a franchise player when playing like this.
Green is doing some work!
Man, FINALLY. I'm sick to death of Gentle Jeff.
i instruct shaq to knock wade into the atlantic ocean
I honestly think Rondo might be playing up his injury so he can take advantage of this Heat's defense. Looks like he's raising his arm fine.

Did you SEE how badly his arm bent? Playing up the injury? [dang], I'm amazed he's not in the locker room, sedated.
16 point lead with nine and a half minutes to go ... sitting pretty

Absolutely. Game is not over.16 point lead with nine and a half minutes to go ... sitting pretty
The Heat are capable of incredible runs (e.g. 80-80 halfway through the 4th in Game 2 followed by a 17-4 run that broke the game wide open).
Finish strong, play D, box out and no layups. Celtics got this.

For everyone saying Rondo's overplaying the injury: popping out a joint is like having it numbed, or like having just lifted weights for hours and hours on end until you couldn't lift anything anymore. yea, he's very, very lucky it popped out of the socket instead of breaking, it was very bad and he surely tore something in there
Btw, Jeff Green has taken it to another energy level tonight. He is playing inspired D on anyone he's covering. He is making LeBron and Bosh work really hard to get anything off him. I think/hope the switch finally flipped for him...all-out effort is how we do it here. And the fact is, he's athletic enough to create havoc on D.

Agreed, he's been awesome tonight and this is the Jeff Green I thought we were getting when he traded for him. This is who Green is, sign him danny.
I never want to hear about lebrons elbow again after this.
Jeff Green, man. He's looked like the player we all hoped for this half.Alright Green, I realize the Todd Day comparison was a little extreme....just keep it up. You're playing great tonight.

Rondo's making me proud to be a C's fan right now.Yep, Rondo since half time and playing through the pain has been a brilliant turnaround to watch. Jeff Green is playing like the player we hope he can be. Hopefully he realizes that too.

Terrible to say, but you know what one of the key factors is tonight?
Glen Davis, 8 minutes.

Terrible to say, but you know what one of the key factors is tonight?I would have to agree :)
Glen Davis, 8 minutes.
Finish strong, play D, box out and no layups. Celtics got this.
Unfortunately the last two things on that list have been very difficult for the Celtics in this series.
yup. Green made a nice drive and dish to BBD who promptly gets stuffed.Terrible to say, but you know what one of the key factors is tonight?Glen Davis, 8 minutes.
True, that. Take notice, Doc
Terrible to say, but you know what one of the key factors is tonight?and he's doing what he should be doing...hustling, playing solid D, and not trying to do too much.
Glen Davis, 8 minutes.
so, wonder how vinnie is feeling at the game tonight ;)
It's crazy that Green has been so effective and has only 6 points and 2 boards. But he's made plays when we've needed them.

This is going to go down as one of the gustiest performances in NBA history by Rondo.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qoSXxWHV7Q

Yeah, it just goes to show that not everything shows in a stat sheet. Green has had nights with okay numbers where he looked downright bad, and tonight he's been an impact player despite mediocre stats.

any word on delonte's shoulder? we're gonna need him big-time this postseason now...rondo's not gonna be right for a while.
Meanwhile while we're all buzzing over Rondo and Green, KG's only got 28 and 15.He's the one thing that held us together in that tough stretch that we've had. Hands down the player of the game.
26 points and 15 boards for KG tonight. 12-17 FGAs.
Meanwhile while we're all buzzing over Rondo and Green, KG's only got 28 and 15.This is one of the best KG games I can remember. Along with his impressive statline he's rendered Bosh 100% irrelevant on both ends of the court.
Dagger!
Dagger!!
(http://assets.nydailynews.com/img/2009/09/17/gal_kk_the-crane.jpg)Funny thing about this: a lot of other teams go "Sweep the leg!" when their opponent is nearly down :)
Now can we take a little enjoyment in LA's demise?who was waiting to enjoy their demise? I wasn't ;D
Great game. Great game thread, too, guys. Top notch.

... and that's what separates us from Lakers scum. ;)
the scary part about this game is that we can play even better than tonight
... and that's what separates us from Lakers scum. ;)
BTW -- Pierce/Ray shoot a pedestrian 13-31.
Ray catches fire on Monday.
i am a god go celtics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i am a god go celtics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Holy cow Stuart Scott found a way to segue into talking about the Lakers! Who would've guessed?
Now I can go to bed on a happy note, it's only 5am.

Wow that presser by Bosh was...odd.
Press: "How did you pinch your neck this morning?"2 questions about a pinch in his neck and that was all the press asked =p
Bosh: "I woke up"

He sat there looking like a fool! xD
rondo continuously rubbing his leg with BOTH arms is a good sign I think. It's a near unconscious thing: I did that too when I was hurt like that. You start doing random movements with both arms, to see if they "feel the same". A bit like you're trying to figure out if there's going to be any lasting damage, or if it's really all in the same place again.
