What is the all time best movie cameo where the actor or actress played their self?
I vote for Neil Patrick Harris in the first Harold and Kumar movie. Completely unexpected considering his career up to that point.
-
Neil Patrick Harris is a great call. I also liked Kareem in Airplane.

Well John Malkovich in being John Malkovich comes to mind, but while its not a movie, Carl Weathers in Arrested Development has to be up there.
-
Mike Tyson in the hangover was pretty awesome
-
Bill Murray in Zombieland!
Best all time.
-
I can tell you the worst of all time without a doubt in my mind.
Julia Roberts in that crappy Ocean's 11 sequel.
-
Bill Murray in Zombieland!
Best all time.
Oh yeah, that was insanely good. Genius.
-
Bill Murray in Zombieland!
I liked that.
Also, if we can chose from TV, I love Matt Leblanc in 'Episodes'.

she wasn't playing herself.

Bob Barker in Happy Gilmore was pretty funny.

That was definitely the best moment of that movie. Brilliant casting.
Ethel Merman in Airplane immediately came to mind when I saw the title.

Billy Idol in The Wedding Singer.
-
This is easy. Alice Cooper in Wayne's World.
Game. Set. Match.

No, there's scene where she plays herself.
-
Although not a cameo, when anyone mentions an actor playing himself, Jack Nicholson always immediately comes to mind. He is one of my favorite actors, but in all his parts he seems to play himself. I can't decided if he is one dimensional, or brilliant! (I suspect brilliant.)

If we're extending it to TV I'd have to throw in just about everyone who appeared on Gervais' 'Extras.' Haven't watched it in a while, but off the top of my head I'd say Orlando Bloom or Patrick Stewart would be my top. Also, Carl Weathers story arc on 'Arrested Development' was pretty hilarious.
Movies-wise I'd have to agree with Bill Murray. I'll throw Billy Zane in 'Zoolander' into the ring also. He literally did nothing, but the line "Put a cork in it Zane" always slayed me.

You have definitely set the bar very very high here. Probably a winner

Orlando Bloom in Extras and Daniel Radcliffe in Extras both made me strain a muscle from laughing.

Tom Hanks and Green Day play themselves in the Simpsons movie but it probably wasn't too memorable because I had to look it up.
In Sunset Blvd Buster Keaton, H. B. Warner, and Anna Q. Nilsson
played themselves as "the wax dummies" and very famous director Cecil B DeMille played himself. It was uncomfortable because the directors didn't really like each other lots. He did a good job.

Sir Salman Rushdie in Bridget Jones Diary? :D
-
LT in the Waterboy.
And of course
Chuck Norris in "sidekicks"

Maybe not best , but noteable
legendary football coach Amos Alonzo Stagg played himself in Knute Rockne All-American. It was probably the court room scene and he probably didn't say much

Yeah I think that was Ocean's 13. How awful was that?
-
Willie Nelson in Half Baked is a good one. Not sure if he is playing himself.
Snoop has a good one in half baked too
-
Lance Armstrong in Dodgeball was good at the time
Also Stan Lee in Spiderman 3 saying "I guess one man can make a difference after all" was probably pretty good
-
Marcel Marceau in silent movie? Was he actually playing himself? Brief, but funny.
-
Bowie, Zoolander.

Ya, Radcliffe was fantastic as well. Definitely thought about throwing his name out there as well. I loved Bloom describing how disgusted Keira Knightly was when she found out how she'd have to kiss Johnny Depp, and then the female lead asking "Why do you keep talking about Johnny Depp?"
That show wasn't elite, but it's definitely a little overlooked as far as great comedies go. Literally, every single cameo was fantastic.

Yeah see, I like Ricky Gervais's comedy, but his shows...I don't like his acting, or his friends' (his manager in Extras mostly) acting.
When they had a cameo they nailed it 100% of the time..otherwise, meh.

I loved Gervais in 'The Office', and thought he was fine in 'Extras" when given a much more subdued role. Maybe it's his ability to tell a story well , but I thought there was enough good to outweigh points where he was clearly overacting. Unfortunately that storytelling ability hasn't really translated well in his films.
I thought his friend (Stephen Merchant) was fine as well, but could definitely see why his style might rub some people the wrong way. For reasons I don't really understand, he's one of those guys that I kind of want to like - so that might be why I enjoy him.

Oh god, I've got the winner. Starts a minute in

Though, I don't know if that qualifies, not clear if he's being Charlton Heston.

TP IP. Radcliffe in extras was incredible.

Not my favorite, but cameos galore:

I vote for Mike Tyson in the Hangover, with Bill Murray in Zombieland coming in 2nd.
-
Bob Barker in Happy Gilmore has got to be up there too
Edit: I see we agree on that one Roy, Didn't see your comment back at the beginning before I posted.

Alfred Hitchcock appeared in all of his movies...I don't think I was ever able to spot him...just an interesting tidbit.
