Game Notes

When the schedules came out before the season, there were two games that every Celtic and every Laker and their fans circled.   This is a rivalry that goes back before many fans were even alive.  For many years, this classic rivalry was dormant while the Celtics suffered through years of mediocrity and even worse.  But the 2008 finals brought the rivalry back in a big way and last year's finals took it to another level.

This game has even more meaning than most Celtics/Lakers games.  After last year's loss in game 7, every Celtic has had that memory haunting him and this is their first chance to get some measure of revenge.  Shaq has made no secret that he felt that he was treated wrongly by the Lakers and he signed with the Celtics with the main thought of winning another championship to keep Kobe from being one up on him.   Perk felt the loss even more acutely than his teammates because he knew that if he could have played the outcome  would have been different and there was nothing he could do to help his team.

This game also takes on a bit more importance when we accept the predictions that it will be the Celtics and Lakers in the finals again this year for the rubber match.  Along with Perk's absence,  home court could have made a difference for the Celtics in last year's finals.  The Celtics realized the importance of home court and have been taking the regular season a bit more seriously this year.  This gives the head to head games between the Celtics and Lakers a bit more importance than just your average regular season game.

Both teams lost to a sub-.500 team on Friday night. The Celtics were playing in back to back games on the road after traveling overnight and getting to their hotel at 4AM, along with losing an hour due to a time zone change.    The Lakers were playing at home with 2 days rest.  Both teams are 7-3 in their last 10 games.  The Celtics are 13-8 on the road while the Lakers are 18-6 at home.

Last season, the Celtics and Lakers split the series 1‐1 with each team winning on the road.   Rajon Rondo led the Celtics with an average of 17.5 points and 11.5 assists to go along with 3.5 steals per game.  Ray Allen netted 15.5 points per game while Kendrick Perkins added a double‐double with 10.5 points and 12.0 rebounds per game.  Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with an average of 19.0 points per game while Andrew Bynum averaged a double‐double with 16.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game..

After poor showings in their last 2 games.  we can only hope that the Celtics come into this one focused and ready to play.  Regular season games don't get much bigger than this one.

Key Matchups
(http://msn.foxsports.com/fe/images/NBA/Headshots/140x170/4149.jpg)vs(http://msn.foxsports.com/fe/images/NBA/Headshots/140x170/3125.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Derek Fisher
Rondo had substandard games in Portland and Phoenix and as Rondo goes, so goes the Celtics.  The Celtics need him to bounce back and have a big game in this one.  Fisher struggles with stopping younger PG's.     Rondo must be aggressive in this game and exploit that weakness.  On the other side of it, Fisher is capable of hitting big shots and Rondo must play tough defense to keep Fisher from getting hot.

(http://msn.foxsports.com/fe/images/NBA/Headshots/140x170/3007.jpg)  vs  (http://msn.foxsports.com/fe/images/NBA/Headshots/140x170/3513.jpg)
Kevin Garnett vs Pau Gasol
Kevin Garnett is the heart of the Celtics and he has been playing very well this season.  Gasol may be more important to LA's attack than even Kobe and so it will be important for KG to limit Gasol and be aggressive on both ends of the court to make him work for everything he gets.

Honorable Mention
Every Other Matchup
Ray Allen vs Kobe Bryant
(http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2009/0205/nba_g_kobe-allen01_576.jpg)
Kobe is a very dangerous player and the Celtics must try to contain him.  Ray will need help from the team defense.  It's possible that we will see Fisher on Ray at times and Kobe on Rondo.  If so, then Ray needs to exploit that matchup.

Paul Pierce vs Ron Artest
(http://view3.picapp.com/pictures.photo/image/9141864/lakers-artest-gets-the/lakers-artest-gets-the.jpg)
These 2 have been going at each other for a long time and there are usually some type of fireworks between these two go at each other.  Who can forget the time when Artest pulled down Pierce's pants or their clashes in the Finals?  This is always a great matchup to watch and Pierce always gets up to play Artest and vice versa.

Shaquille O'Neal/Kendrick Perkins vs Andrew Bynum
(http://cdn.bleacherreport.net/images_root/gallery_images/photos/000/285/283/GYI0059465216_crop_450x500.jpg)
Both centers have extra motivation to beat this team and so whichever center is on the floor, we should see some good play.  If the refs give them a chance to play without getting both into foul trouble, the Celtics should be able to defend the paint well.

Bench vs Bench
(http://media.nola.com/hornets_impact/photo/glen-davis2jpg-b32ce558649ac2f0_large.jpg)
The Celtics may or may not be missing Baby in this game because of the hamstring injury from the Suns game.  If Baby can't play, that makes the Celtics depleted bench even more depleted.  The Celtics reserves must be focused and play smart in order to give the starters a rest without giving up anything to the Lakers reserves.

Keys to the Game
Defense - Both in the Paint and on the Perimeter The Celtics must get their defensive focus and trust back and play the team defense that has made them so tough to beat.  In the past two games we have seen this defense in spurts, but the Celtics must get back to playing solid defense for 48 minutes.   Taking a few possessions off on defense could result in an uphill battle for the Celtics that they might not be able to overcome.

Rebound -   Rebounding is effort and desire and the Celtics showed neither as they allowed the Suns to out rebound them.    The Celtics need to put out more effort and crash the boards to prevent the Lakers from getting second chance points and fast breaks off the rebounds. With the length of the Lakers, the Celtics have to box out and crash the boards or they will give up a lot of points on tip ins and second chance baskets.

Keep their Focus  The Celtics have to come out strong and stay focused for 48 minutes.  They can't play in spurts and expect to win against the top teams.   The Starters must especially get their cohesion and focus back and play as a team.  There is no room for hero ball in this game.  Staying focused also includes taking better care of the ball.  They can't turn the ball over 20 times against the Lakers and expect to win.

Be Aggressive- The Celtics allowed the Blazers and the Suns to out play them in their last two games.  They allowed their opponents to be the more aggressive team and the results weren't very pretty.  The Celtics must be the more aggressive team.  They have to go to the basket and get into the paint along with going after loose balls and being aggressive on defense.

X-Factors
Effort and Health
Big Baby is listed as questionable for this game after injuring his hamstring in the last game.  The bench gets very thin if he can't play.   The Celtics can't give a half effort in this one.  They have to give it 100%.

Maybe some perspective? Besides, you can't convince me that you really believe that ;) This isn't a team that mails it in -every single time-. Second best record in the league! I'm pretty positive about this game.

Hope we get the Good Celtics though. I want to see us really obliterate these fools.

Not to mention the Lakers were at home after two days of rest, while the Celtics were on the 2nd game of a back-to-back road trip. I think they'll be fine Sunday.

Lakers vs Celtics are always bitterly contested affairs and I expect later today to be no different. The fans add a lot of bluster to the series (Beat LA vs Boston Sucks). The entitlement of the Laker Fans vs the I am going to grind you into nothing Celtics Fans.

This rivalry set my engineering career back in 1984 (for 20 years) when the West Coasters aligned with the Phony Glitter Lakers vs those dirty East Coast Celtics. I openly rejected my managers position that I should be rooting for the Lakers and basically thumbed my nose at my colleagues.

This time most Seattle people are favoring the Celtics - kind of a good old boy thing.

I would be shocked if either team played lousy tomorrow. So I believe the Celtics will give it hell tomorrow and make us forget about Friday. The Lakers have not shown me that much this year with their Mamby-Pamby schedule but I have to assume they will try to show their best game.

Let's hope the Referees don't try to steal the show and make marginal calls. That would be a disgrace and reflect badly on the NBA game.

The big key for today's game will be the Celtics low post defense against Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum.

If they slow them down, LA's offense will become very one dimensional + predictable (Kobe going one-on-one) + fairly easy to defend. And with Perk and Shaq at the five against Bynum and Garnett against Pau, the Celtics should be able to do that.

So Boston should derail the Lakers offense. Their defensive strengths matchup extremely well against LA's offensive weapons.

Today's refs

Joey Crawford
Marat Kogut
Tom Washington

UGH!!!

Indeed - hard to believe Joey gets assigned to this one (although the Celtics did win game 5 with him as lead ref last June).

Here's a bit more detail:

This season with any of these three refs:

Lakers 5-3: Wins @ Suns, vs GS, vs Bulls, @ Clippers, vs Cavs. Losses: @ Rockets, @ Bulls, @ Grizzlies

Celtics 4-2: Wins vs Bulls, vs Blazers, @ Nets, @ Raptors. Losses: vs OKC, @ Magic.

Last 10 (11/15/09 to date) with any combo of these refs:

Lakers 18-7, Celtics 12-11

Hmmmm  >:(

It won't be that extreme - I just don't want to see any 3X (or worse) FT margins.

But it boggles the mind how NBA management decides to choose him for this game (similarly when they put him into key playoff games involving the Spurs).

It's like they are thumbing their nose at their own fans...

Based on the results of the Finals last year, the NBA (Stern) would most likely want Boston to win this game.

I think there is a reffing conspiracy, I also think that today it will favor us.

Guaranteed there'll be no sleepwalking through this one.  What I'm really looking forward to seeing is Shaq vs Bynum.  I think we'll see the best of Shaq today and maybe a preview of what we can expect from Shaq come the playoffs.

Don't think the final result is all that important in the big picture given BBD status plus Delonte and JO missing but I think we'll see the true potential of the Shaq factor today -- assuming Crawford & Co actually let him compete.

It boggles the mind how Crawford is still an NBA ref. Crawford has drawn suspensions twice for his conduct on the court and once for felony fraud and he is still an NBA ref.  So much for the integrity of the game.

Q's going into his midseason ritual leading up to the 12:30 QST appointment. A walk on 36th and 33rd Ave W. No Super Birds at Denny's (not the way to lose at least 33 pounds by playoff time). Play 33 games of chess on the internet an hour.

That Avatar is awesome ACF.

Good sign - my blood pressure was 133 over 86 this morning. During Game Seven it was probably 186 over 133 (What do you think Dr Bahku? Drink more Sammy's? Maybe you can write me an Rx of Sammy Adams beta blockers).

I knew that Joey Crawford's ugly mug would show up today. I am sure that Landlord Jerry Buss gave him free rent in a six bedroom home in Beverly Hills following last year's ludicrous disgrace of Game Seven.

I need to go wake up the Soul of Shaquille and proudly run on 36th Avenue in his honor and perhaps he can put Kobe on the pine a couple of times.

A Celtics victory today would put me in the SPIRIT of THE SEASON!!

I feel the POSITIVE ENERGY coming back after Wichita St blew out Bradley, Kansas blew out Kansas St, and Rensselear Mens College Hockey beat #1 Yale in the BIG RED freakout in Troy, NY. I would say I am over with the Debacle in Phoenix and it is time to wipe the Fakers @ss.

Ray Allen is the Celtics best offensive weapon against this Lakers defense.

Pierce has a tough time with Artest on him and Rondo has been inconsistent offensively with Kobe defending him.

Garnett, against Gasol or Odom, is the second best option go-to option.

How is that a foul on Perk and not Bynum?  Or at least a double foul?  ???
Perkins bangs for the rebound, foul. Bynum jumps over his back, great play  ::).

Yup.  A bit ridiculous.

I kind of agree with Mark Jackson. The Celtics had all the momentum and they found a way to lose. I hope they don't forget it.

Marquis' length will help cause Brown some problems with his jump shot + Marquis has a major advantage in the post offensively.

Rondo ineffective again. Rose would be all over the place by now.

at the beginning of the year I still thought Rondo was the better overall player , but his poor free throw shooting has made him shy away from attacking the hoop.

He could get to the line 10+ times a game if he just went to the hoop. Work on your free throws [dang] it

I really wish TNT was broadcasting this game instead.

I'd rather either team of local broadcasters.  Breen is full of himself, Jackson has nothing to offer other than a handful of annoying catchphrases and Van Gundy prefers comedy to color commentary.

RONDO NEEDS TO WAKE THE HELL UP.

He's been in sleepwalk mode the last month and I'm sick and tired of it.

He's gotten so used to sitting around waiting for somebody to pass to so he can pad his assists stats that he's stopped being aggressive.

At first it was cute.. "aw look, he's just like Tom Brady back there!" but now it's just getting offensive and hurting our offense.

If we make smart decisions on offense, you won't even have to mention TA's name.

Yes. The reason we didn't win Game 7 was rebounds (and the refs  ;))

Kobe was 6-24 in Game 7.

The passes have been off, he's been playing kind of out of control.  Pierce has been more herky jerky than usual too, but wow.  Officiating has been typically bizarre with Joey crawford in charge.  No way Big Baby deserves free throws (we'll take them though)

Does it matter how Rondo is playing if our defense is giving Kobe 22 points (8/11 shooting) in 14 minutes? Our offense is decent - we're shooting over 50% and we have 13 assists as a team, so we're on track toward our season average.

Rondo is awful, Ray is not getting enough shots, Pierce is our only scorer and we're only down 4. So we just have to give Ray more shots in the 2nd half, get KG going (if he can avoid further more foul trouble) and hope Rondo wake up... or benc him for Nate.

Plus, Kobe is in ballhog mode so it's all good for us in the 4th quarter, he will kill his team's offensive game.

stay with me here...rebounding is a constant state of mind...you have to be on it always..every ball is yours..not just the D ones...once you prime your self to think.."that rebound is MINE"..then those three rebounds and a point like the lakers got there doesn't happen. It has everything to do with it. No one shoots well enough to live on shooting alone, you have to follow your shot, wait till someone is under the hoop..and or have a rebounder.

The #1 job for a point guard is to help his team create high percentage shot attempts.

The Celtics are shooting 51.4% from the field and have 13 assists on 19 baskets.

----------------------------------------------

On the other end of the floor, Rondo has been matched up against Derek Fisher. Fisher had one basket on three attempts and one free throw.

On the basket, Rondo played so-so defense on the ball but he also sent him right (Fisher's weak hand) towards the baseline where there should have been help but the help was late (Shaq's fault).

On another possession, where Fisher got his one assist of the half, Rondo got a deflection on the cross court pass almost creating a steal but the ball fell kindly to Fisher who then beat an off balance Rondo into the paint and set up a nice baseline midrange jumper for Pau Gasol.

Other than those two plays, Fisher has barely been a factor on offense.

-----------------------------------------------

Rondo has been quiet (and he can definitely do more) but he is not playing badly.

He is not hurting the team.

Kobe Bryant with 20 first half points in only 14 minutes.

8-11 from the field and 5-6 from the FT line.

Yeah, I don't think he'll keep that up.
Definitely not. He'll slow down.

The rest of the Lakers are shooting only 41% from the field and have a total of 32 points on 32 shot attempts + 9 free throws + 3 turnovers. 0.81 points per possession.

Once Kobe slows down, LA's offense is in trouble.

Not to mention that we don't have a transition game going, so we're not playing to Rondo's strength.

t
Game is incredibly even:

same number of free throws for both sides
Lakers just +1 on the offensive glass
Boston made one more three pointer
Celtics turned it over two times more than the lakers
Lakers shooting 48%, Celtics 51%

The big difference is the Kobe is in the zone.  He's in playoff mode and on a serious tear. Not sure Tony Allen, Bruce Bowen or the Green Hornet could slow him down when he;s like that.

tony would not have allowed him to get in a zone he would have frustrated kobe

That is a fact...tp for the truth....

With 3 games in 4 nights I'm worried about our energy after the half....

And Rondo is doing NOTHING, he walks the ball up passes it to someone up top of the key and just runs around unguarded doing nothing  :-X :-\

What are people seeing who think rondo is playing ok? He has 2 points, one assist and one rebound.

Well said, tp.

The real difference in this game, the Lakers have 11 fast break points compared to 0 for the Celtics.

wow, zero? That's shocking with Rondo at pg.

I think Rondo has been wowed too much and too early.
He's still not at the level pretty much everybody claimed for him earlier this season, and kind of disliked hearing him saying "I'm the best PG in the league". He's not, and he has to work hard to get there, maybe starting being a factor in important games like this one.

Well he's not really hurting us either. I'm not trying to defend Rondo, because he has been playing off lately, but he is not the reason why we are losing this game. We have 50pts off 19-37(51%) shooting and 14 assits.

It's our defense that has been horrible.

Losing Artest would be a big blow for LA. Not much else on the wings for LA.

Barnes is out with an injury. Luke Walton is a shadow of his former self since the back injury.

Ebanks is their best player but he is a rookie who has received little playing time ... and will be matched up against one of the most intelligent + versatile scorers in the league in Paul Pierce. Not encouraging.

Or go small with Shannon Brown at the two and Kobe at the three. Rondo would be free from Kobe's defense and Pierce can take Kobe ... his size advantage causing Kobe problems in the past.

Not good options.

Here's how it works:

Refs have a scientifically proven bias in favor of the losing team. This effect is magnified if the losing team has home court advantage.

And if the winning team also happens to be comprised of a bunch of players that the refs don't like (Perkins, Garnett, et. al), well, then, you're gonna have to beat the home team twice to get a single win.

Lakers weaker on team defense and rim protection. He has a PG defending him that he can more easily take advantage of (than Kobe). Great opportunity for Rondo.

Their defense has fallen apart whenever someone else has to defend Pierce. They have nobody else who can do a job on him.

The Lakers are a really good basketball team.

The Celtics are a better one.

I think all the concern and controversy here is legit, we're fans and that's what we do...but man, sometimes we forget how much better we have it than just about every other team in the league.

When Rondo is aggressive on offense, good things happen. Nate playing good defense tonight and has made a couple of threes. Davis had a fantastic move there. And just drew the charge haha.

If some of our guys can play like this in the playoffs, we will win in the playoffs.

Rondo seems to be the key for us. We need KG to contribute offensively and defensively. Then our other bigs need to play good defense and occasionally make the good play like Davis just did.

In any case, we are taking over here, wow.

the officiating is poor, maybe MAYBE not biased but very poor, twice the refs to me appeared to change the momentum of the game through questionable calls

we are all to hard on our young mr rondo, i expect greatness out of him at all times, he put up some nice numbers 10 pts 16 assists 5 rbs but i felt he didn't play well

PP is incredibly effecient, kobe pumped up 29 shots, he looked like lebron out there giving up on his teams system and his teammates

very nice game by glen davis!

Can't wait for our team to be at full strength

Celts win the boards 43 - 30 and basically even in offensive rebounds - that's why we won.

Great all round game but props to Glenn for staying within his game and to Nate for putting in one of his best efforts of the season.

For real. These guys have struggled but they were rock solid today. We'll need them come playoff time.

random thoughts
the officiating is poor, maybe MAYBE not biased but very poor, twice the refs to me appeared to change the momentum of the game through questionable calls

we are all to hard on our young mr rondo, i expect greatness out of him at all times, he put up some nice numbers 10 pts 16 assists 5 rbs but i felt he didn't play well

PP is incredibly effecient, kobe pumped up 29 shots, he looked like lebron out there giving up on his teams system and his teammates

very nice game by glen davis!

Can't wait for our team to be at full strength

Yup!

We did this without JO or Delonte!!

Delonte will help, but I wouldn't count on JO doing anything for us ever

Being even on offensive boards when you're shooting 60% and they are shooting 44% is a tremendous win. They only got 22% of their misses, the celtics got 31%.

Yup, that is definitely the stat of the night. Garnett, Pierce, Rondo, Shaq, and Perk all with 5+ rebounds.

What I really liked about this game is that all the guys who played in game 7 were big factors. Think about it, JO, Delonte were not there today, Shaq didn't do too much (although his size was useful) and the Celtics still won convincingly.

It's just good to know that the guys who remember how poorly they played in game 7 remained locked in and focused on today's game.

That being said, it was a must-win game just to avoid all the hype coming from the media etc.

I remain optimistic that now that the team and JO have assessed this knee more thoroughly and have come up with a gameplan for the year, JO will contribute down the stretch and the playoffs.  Maybe nothing huge, but some solid D, rebounding and an occasional bucket

4. Kobe tries to do it by himself.

Someone may have said this but watching Kobe shoot every time and miss a lot of them down the stretch looks different after reading that "Kobe isn't clutch" article.

Also, I criticized BBD a lot last year for getting so many shots blocked under the basket when he has the bulk to create the space to get the shot off.

I don't like those long jumpers by BBD.
I hate those too. There was that one maybe in the 2nd quarter where he took a long jumper with an open Ray Allen right beside him. He missed and even if he had made it I wish KG had walked up to him and been like "See this guy? He's your teammate. His name is Ray Allen. He's kinda like the best shooter that ever lived. If you ever take a jump when he is way open next to you again I will kill you so don't do it because I don't want to kill you"

Traveling all day, just finished watching on DVR.  Great, great game, very well played until we broke them in the 4th.

So many guys had great games but the story of the game was our bigs wearing down theirs.  Gasol and Bynum went from strong first halves to a weak, complacent second.  They looked exhausted.  This is a great sign if we meet em in the playoffs.

A remarkable display of tenacity by the Good Ol' Boys in Green today in overcoming the five on eight odds against the Celtics :D Joey Crawford is a complete disgrace to the NBA :< The Celtics were spectacular in the 4th qtr winning every critical battle and scoring every basket. Big Baby Shaq made father Shaq proud :D with that layup between Gasol and Bynum in the 4th qtr stretch. And Ray Allen eletrified the Celtics fans in the crowd with his clutch 3 point shooting :D. There was nothing that Kobe could do about it. Gasol became Gasoft and Ron Artest cowered worse than Freddie Mitchell in Super Bowl Thirty Nine. When Jerry West all but declares the Laker run over that cannout be a good sign for the Lakers, Not at all :D The only regret I have about today is that it is a Sunday in January instead of Father's Day :(

On that note, I would advise my BCP brothers and sisters to reset the odometer to Zero and focus on the Sacremento Kings who knocked off New Orleans last night to validate their fine win over the Lakers the night before.

laker fans throwing gasoft under the bus and backing over him

I know...a lot of them are ready to trade him already..lol. I love it when the Faker nation is miserable.

It's sad, really.

Pau Gasol was not the reason LA lost today. Kobe tried to put the team on his back, and once again failed.

He did not run the offense through Gasol, which makes them a better team when they do.

The way that KG was today, though - even if Kobe tried to diversify, it wouldn't have helped much.

I think I saw about 6 "ESPN Trade Machine" formulas including Pau Gasol when I was observing Silver Screen and Roll.

They are throwing the man under the bus, and it ain't right.

I'd dare Laker fans to throw Kobe under the bus, just once. He was the reason they lost this one.

You know what makes this victory so sweet?

Kobe and Phil wanted it bad don't believe for a second they didn't

the taunting of Shaq, and Marquis by Kobe

when Odom checks in and as they wont on a run that giddy laughing on his face-

mwahahhhahaa

Probably already been mentioned many times. But nice to win this one for Perk. Seems like his whole return was geared toward coming back and beating the Fakers to prove that they got lucky and that the starting 5 are still undefeated in a playoff series.

Pretty Awesome!

Great, great win.  Rondo, despite dishing out 16 assists, left me with a somewhat bad feeling for parts of the game.  While I can't exactly blame him for looking for his own offense with the way PP was playing, I'd like to see him try to hurt Kobe more when Kobe guards him.

While I don't completely agree with everything Jerry West said, Kobe is getting older.  Rondo should look to go at him from the get go and wear him out/draw him into foul trouble.

Also, I didn't love Rondo letting Fisher get by him a few times.

I know I'm nit-picking, as Rondo had a nice game; however, I think we're going to need to see more of that to beat them in a 7-game series.

Though I think the Lakers are looking a step slower.  They might not be there in the end.

Or maybe they could throw Artest (1-10) or Fisher (1-6) under the bus instead.

Wow, looking at the boxscore we outrebounded them 43-30, which is great, but out-assisted them 34-10  :o which is incredible.  7 guys with at least 2 dimes.  Amazing ball movement.

That usually happens when one guy like Kobe tries to win the game all by his lonesome. Rondo was racking up all kinds of helpers in the 2nd half (15 assists in the 2nd half) Help me Rondo, Help, Help me Rondo.

I don't wish injury on anyone but what made this victory sweeter was we beat up on them physically and didn't back down, consider the message sent:

Quote
Artest was hampered with a sore left thigh after a collision with Shaq in the 1st quarter and Bynum was held out of practice the following day due to a sore left knee from contact

I am just responding to bump the thread because remembering spanking the Lakers never gets old.

So true.  So this was a bigger win for Celts than it would have been for the Lakers.  However, it was a bigger loss for the Lakers than it would have been for the Celts.

Make sense?
