Boston Celtics (34-10) at Portland Trailblazers (25-21)

10:30 PM ET
Regular Season Game #45,  Road Game #20
TV:  TNT, CSNNE, TSN2

Rose Garden

Throughout sports today, nearly every stadium or arena’s name has been sold to a corporate sponsor. In the NBA there are only a few arenas that are not like this, including the Portland Trailblazers home, the Rose Garden.  Unlike most other teams in the NBA, the naming rights to the Trailblazers new home was not sold. The team decided to name the arena after Portland as it is known as the Rose City and used the word, garden, because the word was often used as part of old arenas’ names. The Portland Trailblazers played their first game at the Rose Garden on November 3, 1995 against the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Jermaine O’Neal played for Portland from 1996‐2000
LaMarcus Aldridge and Avery Bradley both attended the University of Texas
Wesley Matthews and Celtics Coach  Doc Rivers both attended Marquette
Brandon Roy and Nate Robinson both attended the University of Washington
Ray Allen played for Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan in Seattle from 2003‐05
Von Wafer played for the Trail Blazers during the 2007‐08 season

Game Notes
The Celtics begin their first Western road trip with a visit to the Portland Trailblazers.  This is the second meeting between these two teams this season with the Celtics winning at the Garden 99-95 after a frenzied Blazers comeback and a game winner by Ray Allen who had been just 2-11 up to that point.

As with many of the Celtics games recently, there is a different cast for both teams in this game.  Marcus Camby and Brandon Roy will miss this game with Joel Przybilla and Wesley Matthews replacing them.  For the Celtics Shaq will more than likely be out and in his place will be Semih Erden.  And coming off the bench for the Celtics will be Perk in his second game back from injury.  LaMarcus Aldridge underwent an MRI on his hip after Monday's game but there was no damage and so he is expected to play in this one.  Wes Matthews tweaked his ankle in the last game and is likewise expected to play in this one.   Paul Pierce also tweaked his ankle in Tuesday's game but is also expected to play in this one.

The Celtics have beaten the Blazers in 10 of their last 11 meetings.  And have won the last 7 times these teams have met.  The Celtics are 12-7 on the road and 7-3 in their last 10 games.  The Blazers are 16-6 at home and 6-4 in their last 10.  The Celtics are looking for their second straight win while the Blazers are hoping to avoid a 2 game losing streak after their 5 game winning streak was stopped by Sacramento on Monday.

Portland’s .402 (39-59) all-time winning percentage against Boston is its lowest mark among all current NBA opponents. The Celtics are the NBA’s only active team with  a winning record in Portland (26-23).

According to an article in Oregon Live (http://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/index.ssf/2011/01/trail_blazers_vs_celtics_when.html (http://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/index.ssf/2011/01/trail_blazers_vs_celtics_when.html)) the Blazers are planning to come out strong and  establish themselves as the aggressor early.  The Celtics must match their early aggression and take their aggression a step further.  The Celtics can't take the Blazers for granted due to their injuries because the Blazers are still a dangerous team, even with Camby and Roy out.

Key Matchups

(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/KGBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/portland/AlridgePor.jpg)
Kevin Garnett vs LaMarcus Aldridge
LaMarcus Aldridge is the reigning Player of the Week but he underwent an MRI on his hip after scoring just 9 points in their last game.  The MRI was negative and he is expected to play, but he may not be 100% and that would give KG the advantage.  If both players are healthy, this should be a very exciting matchup to watch.

(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/RondoBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/portland/AMillerPort.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Andre Miller
Miller is a good PG who looks to score but can also distribute the ball.  In their last meeting, Miller had 20 points on 9-17 shooting and 6 assists while Rondo put up 10 points on 4-7 shooting to go with 10 assists.  Rondo needs to be aggressive and go right at Miller from start to finish and set the pace for the Celtics and the game.

Honorable Mention

Kendrick Perkins vs Chris Johnson
With Camby out with a knee injury, the Blazers called up center Chis Johnson from the Dakota Wizards of the D-League.  Perk should be coming off the bench again and will be more than likely doing battle against this 6'11" rookie.  Hopefully we will see another solid injury free outing from Perk in this one.

Keys to the Game
Defense - The biggest key to every game will be defense. This is even more important on the road where the opponents get a boost from their fans and the Celtics will need to clamp down even tighter on defense.   The Celtics must make defense their number 1 priority

Rebound - When the Celtics put out the effort to out-rebound their opponents it usually results in a win.  When they don't make the effort to rebound, it affects the effort in the other areas as well. Perk's return should help in this area.

Bench -    The Celtics' bench must give them quality minutes in order to keep the starters from being worn out by the end of the game. This is especially important in back to back games like this one with the Suns looming on Friday night.

Focus - The Celtics have tended to lose focus when they play against teams who have a losing record or who have a star out.  With the injuries on the Blazers, the Celtics may tend to take them lightly but that would be a big mistake because the Blazers are still a very dangerous young team.

Be Aggressive - The Blazers have said that they are going to come out strong and try to set the tone for the game by being the aggressors.  The Celtics must be aggressive as well and take the ball to the basket, not settling for jumpers, and they need to be aggressive going after loose balls and rebounds as well.

X-Factors

Effort and Focus
The Celtics are on the road and in order to win they need to be focused and put forth a solid effort from the opening tap to the final buzzer.  On the road they can't afford to coast or put out less than 100% effort.

lets just hope the refs don't let Portland use 6 players this time. I still can't believe those moronic refs actually let this play stand.  ::)

Strange things tend to happen when these two teams get together. Must be this Ex-Mrs Q thing or something. I think you got to be able to move the ball while limiting turnovers and at least hold them close to even on the boards. Celtics usually do well in Portland but that 6 players on the court play resulted in a loss.

They have won 2 of the last three here with the victories coming in February and the 6 Blazers on the court affair coming in the end of December (where the Celtics typically go into form reversal after establishing the league best record.

This is the start of the three games in four nights and the Celtics usually make an effort to win that 1st game. So I look for a strong effort out of the green tomorrow.

Thanks, and a TP, for the thread. I loved the opening pix of the nails. Very nice.

Go celtics! They should win big and win early.

Portland might put up a fight for part of the game but they won't be able to sustain it.

Not enough talent, not enough depth, on their roster.

The Celtics will pull away and claim a solid (8-10 point margin, maybe more) at some point. Might happen early, might happen late, but it will happen.

Great set-up, Fl, (TP) ... this will be a challenging road-trip, but the Celts play their best against the tougher opponents, (it's the "let-down" games that worry me).

I think we come home with four more wins, and a bit more of a chip on our shoulder, (or one loss at the most). Whatever happens, these will be exciting games! Here's to blowing out the Lakers ... and some retribution for Perk!

Go Celtics!

Its amazing the blazers are basically going to make the playoffs in the west, while missing their 2 best players, and now their 4th best goes down with an injury.

Basically LaMarcus Aldridge, Wes Matthews, and Andre Miller can carry teams above .500 and into the playoffs.

No doubt in my mind that if Oden, Roy, and Camby were healthy they would be a legit title contender and probably 1st or 2nd seed in the west.

You know, the Blazers might have the talent to be the #1 seed in the West.  It's really hard to say whether or not they will on a given night, though.  Don't sleep on them.

are you considering Oden as their second best player?
i think Aldridge is much better the oden.

The Blazers are one of those teams (Rockets would be another example)that no matter how many injuries they have on their roasters, just never give up and always put up a fight. I don’t think tonight is going to be easy.

i think Aldridge is much better the oden.

When Oden's been on the court he's been better than Alridge. More rebounding, more defense, and more efficient scoring.

Of course Oden can't get on the court, which is the reason the Blazer's are going to be also rans for a long time....

That is such a freakin crime. Seriously, I am mad about that. Usually I like the TNT broadcasts on away games because it means league pass can't screw me out of Mike and Tommy like they are prone to, and at least I get a professional experience, but tonight it is ridiculous.

Harlan has certain biases that amuse me.  He seems to love Rose, for example, and he also loves Rondo.  Whenever either of them so much as blinks, he sounds like he's about to jump out of his chair.

He is a good announcer, though, I agree.

In terms of passion and spirit, he could be one of the greatest ever. I also appreciate the transformation he undergoes on the court, from the private individual you see (or don't see!) off the court, to the defensive barking anchor. And in terms of history he redefines ubuntu and the whole "Big 3" mentality

Offense was a problem, but the bigger problem with the bench was defense and rebounding.  Baby lost his man multiple times, and no body was blocking out or pursuing the ball.

That's not actually what they said. They said they prepare as much as anyone pre-game but during the game stay focused on what they need to do.

I'm okay with reducing Nate's minutes but let's stop talking nonsense re: trades. Nate's got value and a manageable contract. I can't think of a serious trade that could get the C's equal value.

I can't watch Nate  anymore. I truly believe Doc is insane. Perk playing too many minutes.

I think it's good for Doc to test Perk's conditioning and see what he can handle.

I don't think Nate's shot selection has been bad this game.

Agreed. Nate is just in a terrible slump. He'll break out eventually.

making some shots doesn't cure stupidity

Hate whoever you want but it's disrespectful to call anyone stupid.

nate's decision's on the floor have been stupid, that's not disrespectful, it's calling it as I see it. H emight be a genius off the floor, but I on;y care about his game.

Guys on TNT talking about the Celtics not preparing for games. Doc isn't worried about other teams as much as he is about the Celtics themselves.

TP. Agreed man.

Given the offensive deficiencies of the bench, when Nate is in there with the second unit, he should be taking most threes that you would want Ray Allen to attempt in a similar situation.  Agree or disagree?

disagree. I would want to see plays going to the basket to utilize Davis and Perk (or Shaq), and see Daniels get more shots in the post. Nate is nowhere near Ray Allen's league and is also much much shorter, making it tougher for him to get good shots off.

I think the Celtics execution is more the problem than the effort--too many dumb turnovers, brainfarts on boxouts, etc. I'm not seeing the Celts quit running on defense or anything like that, they're just making dumb mistakes. Hopefully they clean it up and don't let Portland rattle them.

I disagree we've taken Portland's best, though. They're amped up and flying around like crazy but aside from a bunch of offensive rebounds they don't have much to show for it. They took 50 shots and only got 37 points.

I keep thinking the same thing but I dont know what we can do when the bigs are sprinting from the ft line when a shot goes up from the perimeter. Unless there is a wall of players around the paint, it is impossible to get a body on everyone.

The key is to make the Blazers pay for crashing the glass by getting out on transtition. havent done that yet.

I agree, though you have to admit a big part of the reason they have 16 offensive boards is that they've missed 43 shots and they're shooting in the high 30s.

Blazers have active athletic bigs, so they'll get their rebounds. If we keep them shooting under 40% I like our chances.

Walton is hilarious. Love the comment he made when Doc went nuts on the sidelines. About contributing to the website "ilovetherefs.org"...

I like him, because unlike Tommy he is criticizing bad celtics' play when he should. Celts struggling partly because rondo taking another night off so far

A nice change up. I also like that he doesn't bleed green so much... although Tommy is great like that.

Wafer with the steal after another (!) uncalled Fernandez travel and the coast to coast.

Wafer's making a good case that he should be West's backcourt mate.  Much more of a danger going to the rim than Nate.

Rondo has got to learn to make free throws. It really is a joke how bad he is.  Pitiful. Celts horrendous tonight and trying to give this one away. And no the captain I hurt. Unreal

Pierce is fine Vinnie.

I share your pain with Rondo's ft's though. When my friends and I get together we bet on Rondo's free throws. It's a pretty exciting game.

There's no reason that anyone with Ray Allen as a teammate should not know how to shoot free throws of all things...

Ray has always said he has no problem helping people out if they ask. Rondo's ego may be getting in the way.

I think he is prob dealing with a mild ankle sprain.

Just because Ray is a good free throw shooter doesn't mean he is a good teacher. If it was that easy everyone would be shooting ~90% from the line.

I'm sure Rondo has at the very least asked Ray for advice...

No way...The media has cooled on Howard. He hasnt improved in years offensively or defensively.  KG has returned to his 07-08 defensive form but it doesnt show up in the stat sheet. If KG can get his block numbers up he'll win it. He has a career high in steals per game right now.

The most agonizing part is that I think we all now realize that it's not even a jumpshot that he really needs to master. If he just shoots free throws he can dominate. See Russel Westbrook.

He was playing with the 2nd unit for most of the beginning of the 4th quarter. He came back in and left with 2 minutes left. I dont really know but he wasnt limping that much at all and he did leave the other night with a mild ankle issue. Im just guessing but he probably aggrivated it a bit and left the game knowing it was in hand.

It was during that one offensive sequence for the Blazers in either the 1st or second half, I think.

I noticed the same thing..it's like he's playing smarter. I watched his positioning in the CLE game and this one, and it is ALMOST - Rodman-like.

Seemingly, for most of his rebounds he was just in the right place at right time..it's like he's starting to read the misses.

That is the extent of the update: its the knee but Doc thinks it was a bump. It wasnt the same ankle tweak from the other night.

I feel like while he was rehabbing he just played basketball without his legs. He has shown to be very efficient in his movements.

Rodman isnt a bad comparison. As he lost his athleticism he somehow became a BETTER rebounder.

Good win! Although tonight's back to back will probably be ugly.

Perk impressed me the most, he totally shut down Fernandez when he dribbled to pass him, amazing to do that when you're a center and coming back from a big injury!! :o HE looks more mobile than ever and fluid on offense, it's cool to see.

Big games from Ray (his alley-oop was a beauty), Paul and KG (he dished the ball so well). Rondo made the 2nd unit much better and it was needed since Nate is just horrendous right now, I'm not sure Delonte's return will make him better but I certainly hope it will...
