Team Connections
Al Jefferson was originally drafted by the Celtics with the 15th overall pick in the 2004 Draft and played for the Celtics from 2004‐07
Mehmet Okur and Semih Erden are both from Turkey
Shaquille O’Neal and Raja Bell were teammates in Phoenix during the 2008‐09 season.

Game Notes
Last season, the Celtics split the season series 1‐1, each winning on their home court.  Ray Allen led the Celtics with an average of 15.0 points per game.  Rajon Rondo averaged 10.0 points, 8.5 assists and 2.5 steals in the two contests.  Deron Williams averaged 17.5 points and 7.5 assists in the two contests.  C.J. Miles netted 23 points in his only game against the Celtics last season.  Mehmet Okur averaged 11.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in the two games.

The Jazz have a strong starting 5 along with a very good bench and they are well coached.  The Celtics will have their hands full with each matchup.  Also, several of their reserves were their starters last season so the Celtics bench players must step up their game for this one.

The Celtics welcome Al Jefferson back to the Garden in this game vs the Utah Jazz.  The Jazz are in the 5th spot in the West and in spite of recent struggles, have played very well this season.  They come into this game losers of their last 2 games and 5-5 in their last 10.  But, they are still a tough team and the Celtics must take them seriously.   The Jazz have played well on the road in spite of their last two losses and are 12-8 away from home.  The Celtics are 20-3 at home, but a few of those wins have been close ones over teams they should have blown out.

The Celtics are looking for their 5th straight win while the Jazz are looking to break a 2 game losing streak. This will be a good test of the Celtics vs a very good team from the West.

Key Matchups
(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/RondoBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/utah/DwilliamsUta.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs  Deron Williams
Rondo has yet another tough matchup with one of the top young PG's in the league.   Williams is strong and quick and Rondo will need to be aggressive on both ends of the court.

(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/KGBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/utah/MillsapUt.jpg)
Kevin Garnett vs Paul Millsap
KG came back strong from his calf injury but struggled slightly against the Pistons.  Millsap has been playing very well for the Jazz and the Celtics will need a strong game out of KG to counter him.

Honorable Mention
Shaquille O'Neal vs Al Jefferson
This should be a fun matchup to watch with two very good centers going at each other.  Big Al has a quickness advantage, but Shaq has a size advantage.  Hopefully Shaq didn't wear himself out diving after all those loose balls against the Pistons.

Paul Pierce vs Andrei Kirilenko
You have to consider Paul Pierce key in just about every game as he has been giving the Celtics just what they need in every game.  We also can't forget that he made Kirilenko cry a couple of years ago.

Keys to the Game
Defense With KG back, the Celtics defense is ramping back up.   They will need to make defense a priority in this game as the Jazz have some very good scorers and the Celtics will have trouble winning a shoot out between them.

Rebound The Celtics out-rebounded the Pistons 47-34.  They need to continue this  effort on the boards to limit second chance points and fast breaks for the Jazz.

Bench The Jazz has a very strong bench and the Celtics bench mob will need to play well in this game in order for the game not to get out of control while the starters rest.   The bench will be the difference between a close game and a blowout and possibly between a win and a loss.

Be Aggressive  Sometimes the Celtics get passive and when they do, they always struggle and always seem to pick up a lot more fouls.  The Celtics must be aggressive and go strong to the basket, go after loose balls and crash the boards.

Play 48 Minutes
The type of effort we saw in the first 3 quarters of the Pistons game won't cut it in this one.  The Celtics need to come out strong and play hard until the final buzzer.  Jerry Sloan always has his teams playing hard and the Celtics need to match that effort.

X-Factors

Home Court and Focus
Once again, the Celtics will be at home and the crowd support should give them a boost.  Also they can't lose focus against the Jazz.  If they come out focused and keep their focus throughout the game, they should get the win.

I blame it on a conspiracy of Delonte West fans who infiltrated CelticsBlog and decided he was star-worthy.

For me it's a special game, my favorite team, Boston vs. Big Al, I'm a fan of Big Al, tonight I want him to do a big game and play well, but the Celtics win.
Great Big Al, I'm really looking forward to the game, why not a hypothetical final? Utah is a great team, Deron is doing a spectacular season, the two best guards in the league, he and Rondo.

Paul Millsap looks uncomfortable attacking Garnett. Without Deron Williams on the floor, Big Al is the only Utah Jazz player capable of creating his own shot and he is 1-6 from the field. Their offense has been miserable.

Big Al should have more joy against Glen Davis though. He can shoot over the top of BBD in the post comfortably.

Disappointing to be back to this Glen Davis + Semih Erden combo.

It was nice having Jermaine O'Neal out there on the court ... while it lasted ... having that interior defensive presence and shot blocker.

Can't wait for Perkins to return.

Post by: Who on January 21, 2011, 08:12:54 PM
Glen Davis was far too slow to swing that ball to Paul Pierce.

He had an open three at the top of the key but Davis' inability to make a quick play allowed Raja Bell to close out on Pierce and force Pierce to pump fake, dribble and shoot a semi-contested long two pointer.

Thinking too much about his own offense. Putting his head down and not paying attention to what is happening elsewhere.

Terrible take by Nate Robinson to close the quarter.

He could have just handed it off to Erden for the dunk but he wanted to dunk on somebody instead ... should have been an easy layup.

The Jazz are typically a pretty gritty team.  They might make a run at us.

The starters have been great out there.  Hope they keep the pedal to the medal because our bench is looking really weak with Nate in downward spiral mode.

I know the Jazz don't have a great record on the road but wow, we might well be getting their worst effort of the season today :o If they have any pride at all though, they'll come out stronger in the second half.

D Will's 3 first half fouls made it easier too.

Did the time keeping mistake advantage/disadvantage us at all?

2. Rondo gets a double-double
3. We score more than 100.

He used to be a much better rebounder and much quicker with the dribble.  Still amazingly efficient as a scorer though.

KG doesn't have the lift off the dribble that he once did - he has to wind up to get a lot of lift now.

In his first year with Boston, he dunks that ball and is at the line for the and 1.  Now he tries to kiss everything off the glass.

KG quickness is so much better than last year.  Not really explosive as a leaper anymore but that quickness makes him just as deadly a defensive player as he was in 08, IMHO.

If that's true, then I stand corrected - TP.  I thought the aggression was a general thing, rather than restricted to just the defensive end.

Agreed.

We as a fan-base in general have become spoiled by our abundance of talent in the starting rotation.  Essentially, we want our subs to be as good as our starting lineup, which consists of 4 first ballot Hall of Famers and Rajon Rondo.

Is Nate Robinson perfect?  Absolutely not.  Can he distribute like Rondo?  Of course not, but nearly every point guard in the league would do a less effective job of running our offense than Rondo does.

Moreover, it's not exactly like vets like Billups and Nash are going to leap at the opportunity to backup Rondo for less than 10 mpg in the playoffs.

Nate is what he is, a flawed player.  However, he can light it up and be a game changer, which is more than most backup PGs can say in this league.

Finally, let's drop the House comparisons.  House had the advantage of playing behind an unrefined Rondo.  There were MANY games in the 2008 playoffs that Doc would finish with a lineup of House, Allen, Pierce, Posey, and Garnett.

Doc wouldn't dream of that now.  And that's not because of Nate, that's because Rondo is twice the player he was 3 years ago.

Really sweet win ... great ball-movement, scoring distribution, defense, and bench contributions I hope this gets us in a nice momentum for the road game, (then one at home), and the West Coast road-trip ... while it looks like we'll be without Shaq, it would be nice to come home with a couple of more wins, (and still a single-figure loss column number).
