Key Matchups
(http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/662.jpg)  vs  (http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/1966.jpg)
Paul Pierce  vs  LeBron James
This may be one of the best matchups in the league.  Paul Pierce's resolve and conditioning will get a test as he starts the season with one of the toughest matchups in the league.  With Wade's injury, James once again had to carry a big part of the team's scoring through the preseason.  It will be interesting to see if that continues with Wade back or if they actually can share the ball.

(http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/261.jpg)  vs  (http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/1977.jpg)
Kevin Garnett vs Chris Bosh
In past matchups between these two, Bosh has always seemed to be intimidated by KG.  It has been established that Bosh is not a leader.  We will see if being with the other 2 amEgos will give him more confidence.  We know that KG is ready to go and will be his old intense self.  We will see how Bosh responds now that he is on a new team.

(http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/9.jpg)  vs  (http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/1987.jpg)
Ray Allen vs Dwyane Wade
Ordinarily I'd say that this matchup would favor the Heat.  But Wade hasn't played in the preseason and though he says that he is 100% after the hamstring injury, he won't know for sure until he tests it in a game situation.

(http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/FLCeltsFan12/BenchMob.jpg)  vs  (http://images.rockler.com/rockler/images/11400-01-200.jpg)
Boston Bench Mob vs Heat Bench
The benches for these teams may be the difference.   The Celtics bench is deeper and more talented than the Heat bench.  When the starters go out, the Celtics should have the advantage.

Game Notes
The regular season is finally here and I don't ever recall an opening night game that has gotten this much media hype.  Both teams have had nagging injuries hit them in camp and both are mostly healthy for opening night.  The Celtics will be missing Delonte West because of his suspension and Kendrick Perkins who is recovering from knee surgery.  The Heat are missing Mike Miller who just had surgery on his injured thumb.

Dwyane Wade missed all but about 3 minutes of the Heat's preseason.  Shaquille O'Neal, Jermaine O'Neal and Delonte West all missed considerable time in the preseason due to various injuries.  Wade should be back in the starting lineup but could be the weak link due to missing most of the preseason.  On the other side, both Shaq and JO will be back in the rotation for the Celtics.  Both O'Neals took their turn at starting with an edge going to Shaq due to the injuries to JO.  I have Shaq starting as of now but that may change by game time.

The Celtics have an advantage in this game as they have been together longer, have a more experienced coach and a deeper bench, and have home court.  The Heat have a lot of hype going for them, LeBron, DWade and Bosh,  and probably the referees.  Time to get it on!!  Banner 18 starts here.

Fixed.  TP for the catch.     I was working on this for hours and finished late but should have proofread it. Gotta get back into the swing of making game threads again :)  The Heat have at least one more cut before the season also.

Assuming all three stars play, it'll be interesting to see how they work together.  To me, the most overlooked reason as to why our Big Three have worked together is how well their games compliment each other.  Due to their differing skillsets and all three's ability to hit the open jumper, they've managed to be effective without negating or repeating aspects of each player's game.

I'm not so sure the Heat have that.

Yes, having three superstars on the court will make it harder for teams to guard them and will conserve each other's energy; however, if all they're going to do is run isos for each of the three superstars, they're largely negating the benefit of having three superstars out there.

And that's not even getting into the whole aspect of whether the three can share the spotlight and the ball.

Certainly Miami could be quite scary and quite good.  But they could also be a younger version of the late-'90s Rockets, a team that not only was too old, but also had three superstars (first Hakeem, Barkley, and Drexler, then Pippen replacing Drexler) whose games didn't compliment each other.  Having Hakeem in the post, just meant Barkley wasn't being effective there and meant Pippen turned into a jumpshoter, something he wasn't.  The same could happen in Miami where LeBron (or Wade's) ball domination could turn Wade and Bosh into jumpshooters, which certainly isn't either's forte.

I personally am willing to assume that JO will start, for now.

Either than that, a TP to FL, and sadly I will miss the start of this game due to...wait for it..NIGHT CLASS!  :'( And I'll probably miss many more beginnings of games due to that, now that I think of it...

None the less, the season is beginning, and I'm kinda looking forward to it.

I agree. When the (real) Big Three were brought together in 2007, I instantly knew what we had not only because of how great all three were, but because of how complimentary their games were.

Presumably, Wade and LeBron will handle the ball the majority of the game. LeBron can move without the ball, but Wade isn't as good. These guys are almost useless on offense without the ball, all of them. You can't have two guys penetrating with one ball while another is hanging out in the post. If two of them are going to be 15+' jumpshooters, the whole league will be fine with that.

On defense, Wade and LeBron are rather good one-on-one. But how well they compliment each other remains to be seen. If they indeed plan on playing Wade and LeBron alongside Miller when he returns, that assuredly creates matchup problems. Matchup problems for the other team, but also for themselves. Which coach can exploit those weaknesses most will get the W's.

And then there is the whole Center issue they will have to deal with.

I think they'll waive D.Butler (injury) and Beverley. Beverley had some good moments in preseason but with Chalmers, Arroyo and House ... they do not need another point guard.

Magloire is a valuable third string center. They need his size, bulk and low post defense against some of the bigger teams in the league. He has value to the team. Pittman is an interesting long term project who should also be kept around.

J.Howard might be in some danger but they should keep him because of the collective lack of quickness in Big Z, Magloire and Pittman. They need a fourth big (along with their top three bigs) to be someone with serviceable foot speed.

I also think the C's need to exploit the Heat for their weaknesses at the 1 and 5 and on the bench.  Outside of Mike Miller, no one else on that team (outside of their Big Three) could crack our rotation.  We need to let Rondo (and even Nate) burn the likes of Carlos Arroyo and we really need to sit Paul, Ray, and KG on the perimeter and let Shaq destroy the host of pretenders the Heat have in the middle.  And if they want to double him, it'll just let our Big Three have open jumpers all day.

I think that the Celtics come out hungry in their opener and send a message to the Heat. This should be a fun season of Celtics basketball. The keys to this game are:

1. Defense and Rebounding - Boston has been together longer and should excel in this area.

2. Turnovers and 1/2 court execution. This was a sore spot for the Heat last year.

3. Coaching and minutes distribution - Boston needs to trust their bench .

4. Maintaining Poise in the face of adverse refereeing decisions, given the apparent mandate to give out quick T's to keep order in the court.

Title: 33 Hours to Post Time
Post by: Q_FBE on October 25, 2010, 11:11:07 AM
I committed myself to post 33 hours in front of the tip off of the 1st game of the season and here I am.

The Celtics must win the title this season. They must take care of their home court and not have to take the long and difficult road through Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, and Los Angelos to accomplish their career goal. They have a bunch of championship starved veterans and a coach who understand the traditions of NBA basketball and Red Auerbach. In the name of Johnny Most, it is your civic duty to root for the Celtics and everyone else is the enemy.

All of you I am sure have little rituals and routines that you do to will the Celtics to victory. I got mine.

I know that I am preaching to the choir in here but I feel better for doing this. So I urge you to not give up on this season if we do lose games we aren't supposed to lose. I want to finish somewhere around 57 wins and get at least a number 2 seed. I want to win 35 home games and go over .500 on the road.

I want to punch out our EC opponents in no more than 16 games total (12-4 or better). I want to punch out the Lakers and punish KobeA-Artest-Pischer-Gasoft-noshowBynum in 5 games.

I think we got a mulligan this year because Ray and Doc came back and so did Delonte and the O'Neal brothers joined us and I firmly believe that they are committed to getting this done. And all the good old fans are pulling for the Celtics this year to win their 18th championship.

After this season, the league will change. Strange as it might sound, Dictator David Stern is almost talking common sense hear as it sounds like he is listening to his accountants.

Here is LeBron James' latest commercial, it is part of a new multi-media campaign sponsored by Nike called 'Rise'. In the video LeBron repeatedly questions the viewer, repeating the phrase 'Should I...', almost as if to ask what he (or she) would (the viewer) would do in his situation, or to challenge his critics who might still feel that he is not 'The Chosen 1' even after winning two league MVP's. The original commercial is 1 and a half minutes long:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smDb8JSj2eg

...I for one hope that LeBron's identity crisis lasts for at least long enough for the Celtics to defeat the Miami Heat in Boston tomorrow night. Either way, the Miami Heat as constructed are a team capable of winning at least 2 rings within the next five NBA seasons, so it isn't too big of a deal if the 'new' Miami Heat can't win their first regular-season game together as a team. Sooner or later that group will figure out what it takes to make it back to the NBA Finals...

With emotions running high in the first regular season game against the expected Eastern Conference powerhouses, this will be the real litmus test of how the refs will call technical fouls during the first couple of months - and whether there will be a discrepancy between the superstars and the regular players.

It's in Boston, so that should help a bit, but more than anything I want to not remember the refs after this game is over.  That, along with a C's win, would make me happy.

Finally, Opening Night is here!! The day will be long, knowing how amazing the game will be tonight.

I predict big games from Rondo and Shaq and, of course, a Celtics win, to start the season on the right foot and calm down the Heat hype.

TP FL and let's go Celtics!

I know these guys are downplaying it, but if any member of the heat come down that lane i want them hammered. Screw all this cordial nonsense. This team thinks theyre going to take over the NBA. They need to be put in their places tonight!!!

Wow, Johnny made Tommy seem calm and even-handed.

I wonder if the refs will have a quick trigger on the Ts like the preseason - this is the biggest regular season game the NBA's had in quite awhile, and I don't think they want it uglied up with a bunch of cheap technicals.  Never know, though.

While I certainly hope that the Celtics kick the crap out of the Heat, the fact of the matter is that is just game 1 of the regular season.  Whether the C's win or lose and whether it's a blow out or not will likely matter very little when all is said and done.  The C's could lose by 20 tonight and still win #18 and vice versa for the Heat.

That said, I'm still looking for some key things tonight as early barometers:

1) What is the state of our Big Three?  It's not so much statistically how they do, it's how lively and young they look.  Even if they're missing shots, are they still moving well and sticking with the Heat Big Three?

2) Can Rondo and Shaq abuse the wannabes that the Heat have at the 1 and 5?

3) Can Marquis Daniels effectively guard LeBron?  That's not to say he stops him, but can he prove he can stick with bigger 3s?

4) How good is our bench?  Can they ultimately be our wildcard as they either pound other benches or come in and run starting units into the ground with their energy?

Very true, well said and important questions. That said, I am so ready for this game. Been ready since the final buzzer of game 7. Heat or not, been waiting for the first jump ball. Just a little over an hour...

1) I expect to see them come out strong. Perhaps even too amped (KG). The second quarter/second half will probably be even more interesting (especially given the 3rd quarter woes of last year. That is where change has to happen). I expect a big game out of Rondo, which goes to #2. A potentially big advantage against the Heat for our boys in green.

3) I hope so. Tony may be missed in this regard. He really did develop into a very good one on one defender. I worry a little about 'Quis' movement. He has size but don't know if he has the pure athleticism needed to guard guys like LeBron.

4) Love the offseason bench moves. Think this is a great improvement for this team. Can't wait till Delonte comes back. Great pickup.

Heat look completely out of sync on offense. Wade is useless right now. They need Miller bad for that safety valve when LeBron or Wade can't get it off..

Good first quarter. Rondo got  great looks for his teammates almost on every possession, too bad Ray missed a lot of open jumpers.

Love the D and the rebounding so far, pleasant surprise. The Heat offense is awful, they're lucky Anthony is grabbind a lot of offensive boards.

So.. How many FGs do we have without a Rondo assist? I guess that's both positive and negative, in some way.

Anyway.. 9 points from Miami in the first quarter. I honestly think they would've done better with only one of the 'other 3' in there!

Miami should keep LeBron in the game at all times when Paul Pierce is in there.

Miami do not have anyone else who can even remotely defend Pierce. Too physical, too skilled.

Good chance here for Pierce to find his rhythm.

There we go, nice little 6 point swing. Up 8, Miami miss at the rim that could have cut the lead to six, then a Pierce fastbreak bucket and a a Marquis layup to push the lead up to 12. Nice separation.

Like to keep that double digit lead heading into halftime.

Davis and O'Neal have made an excellent defensive combination thus far.  Bosh can't drive past Davis as easily as KG (that width really does help) and JO's help defense has been very effective.

Miami is missing shots they'll be making at some point.

Oh well. Can't have everything. Good half, but you can tell Miami is building some momentum. They're gonna come out on fire. Doc and the Celtics have to extinguish that in a hurry.

Up 15 at halftime, we got the job re-done after the Miami run. Need to limit the turnovers and keep the offense going and we'll be fine. I hope the 2010-2011 C's wont collapse in the 2nd half like last year's team :D

Anyway I don't think Miami will miss wide open shots at this rate in the 2nd half but their offense on halfcourt is horrendous so... let's keep the ball moving and we'll be fine!

Great first half anyway! 8)

Solid first half with great ball movement on offense and hustle on defense.  Unfortunately the turnover issue has reared it's ugly head once again as the Celtics already have 12, many of them unforced.  This was a huge issue last year and it continues so far tonight, otherwise the C's would easily be up 20 points by now.  Have to come out strong to start the 3rd quarter.

As everyone remembers the Celtics led the league last season in giving up double digit leads, have to maintain focus...

Good first half, not great. We really should be up by more than 15 with Miami shooting so poorly. Have to keep the Heat off the O-glass and stop turning the ball over if we're to close this out. Game's not over by a long shot, Miami's jumpers will eventually start falling. GO CELTS!

While Miami is clearly somewhat disjointed, Boston is hardly operating on all cylinders yet either.

Very exciting and very promising.  So many weapons.  I also particularly love Marquis Daniels's play.  He clearly has the talent--applied correctly--to be an upgrade over Tony Allen last year.

Miami have played much better with Ilgauskas on the floor.

I'd love to see Rondo make more of a focused effort of attacking Big Z in the pick and roll. There is no way that Z can defend Rondo + stop the roller or cut off the second pass that leads to an open shot for someone else.

Should Jermaine O'Neal have been in there instead of Davis?

Have Jermaine defend Haslem and keep two shot blockers on the court.
Doc trust BBD more to draw charges I guess.

The fact that they Heat are close in this game shows you how scary they can be. But I've revised my opinion, Haslem not Miller is the most important of the Heat's supporting cast.

In an absurd twist of logic, Heat fans and pundits will see this as a moral victory for the Heat.  The Heat are going to be good, maybe great, however, tonight means nothing.  The C's were sloppy at times and did not need to let the Heat back in this.

What pundits will say is that the Heat will get much better, that this is just the beginning of their learnign curve.  They won't apply the same to the C's.  But they should.  This C's team is not the same as last year and they absolutely will improve (with health) over the course of this year.

Cleveland shouldn't present the same level of competition that Miami does.  Daniels and Nate should hopefully see 48 minutes between them as long as they're playing well.

Terrible offensive game for KG: overpassed, mishandled and took way too long to make his moves.

Pierce and Ray really brought it from the perimeter tonight.  Their elite shooting (+ KG's 18 footer) combined with Rondo's penetration ability is effective offense, though, as was the case in the finals, we would have been in big trouble if Ray wasn't hitting.

Once Shaq gets comfy he can provide more scoring in the 1st 3 quarters with Jermaine hopefully ready for defensive action in the 4th.

Excellent work guys, always great to win the first! :)

Until they start playing with 2 balls on the court, Lebron will always struggle to successfully co-exist with 4 other guys.

KG had a couple of uncharacteristic errors but still contributed with some nice interceptions and long jumpers.

Ray is still Ray!

When will Rondo top the 20 assist in a game mark?

Plenty of rest for Pierce tomorrow I hope. GO CELTICS!

he got better as the game went but he's just not the option they should be using in the post.  rarely results in a basket.  when they initially tried to feed him the ball in the post, it didn't go so well.  he played well at the end though -- very good effort on D

The Heat are new to one another, give it time but they will be the number one seed in the NBA and they will give Boston hell.

Good game, and aside from one bad call, I felt the refs did a solid job.

I'd like to see some more movement on offense - thought we got really stagnant in the second half, and we let them back in the game because of it.  Having said that, the defense was very good in general and we dictated the pace from the tip to the final buzzer.

yes, co-sign on the officiating. I thought it was a pretty fair game called. i liked the fact that they were calling traveling violations on Wade. Rondo got away with one though, if i'm not mistaken.

and also, co-sign on the bad offense. i felt the offense was the problem, especially during that stretch with Ray Allen and the 4 bench players against Lebron and the Heat in the 3rd. Lebron was making a huge run and unstoppable plays but we could've weathered the storm better if we were making buckets on the other end. could've also broken their momentum.

Didn't we beat the Cavs by a similar margin in last year's season opener? I could be wrong...but I thought it was an eight point win as well...

Is my tint off a bit or are the Rockets wearing orange?

Maybe it's just Chase Budinger's hair.

Great game to be at. Really excellent, excited atmosphere. Oddly enough, I was supremely confident going into this game. I thought we'd win by double digits, easily. My prediction WAS looking spot on... until the Heat's star power showed a glimpse of what it could do.

I don't think this game was indicative of the Heat's future performance. I do, however, think it was indicative of Bosh's future performance. He was a non-factor scrub tonight, and I expect that to continue. He is a Mo Williams-caliber star masquerading as an All NBA 2nd-teamer, and he will expose himself as such.

I think it is the new type of jerseys the NBA has.

Wow.  Please share more about your time at the game.  I am so jealous.

LOl Heat "This is what happens when your team focus on having parades, being in the media, and making commercials. While other teams were working hard over the summer."

I think the Heat are going to struggle for awhile. D Wade is just going to have to figure out how to play off the ball. This Heat team looks like a slightly better version of the Cavs. Just LeBron all the time. Everyone else just standing around. LeBron has to handle to do anything, so will Wade be happy?

"Paul had his hands full, I had my hands full, Ray Allen had his hands full," Garnett said. "Those three are going to be a force to be reckoned with. We know that. But it’s not one, two, three individuals that make a team."
