Key Matchups
(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/RondoBos.jpg) vs (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/cleveland/MoCle.jpg)
Rajon Rondo   14.8 PPG, 6.2 RPG,  10.2 APG,  +22.6
Mo Williams   15.6 PPG,  2.6 RPG,   5.2 APG,  +13.8
In Game 1, Rondo had 27 points, 12 assists and 6 rebounds.  Williams put up 20 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds.  Rondo began the game very aggressive on both ends of the court and he got the Celtics off to a good start.   But when he was forced to the bench with foul trouble, Mo Williams went on a scoring streak to get the Cavs back into the game. This wasn't the first time that the Celtics have gotten burned by Mo Williams getting hot late in the game.  They have to do a better job of defending him to keep this from happening again.    The Celtics need Rondo to be aggressive again in this game but he had to try to stay out of foul trouble and not allow Mo Williams to find his stroke.

(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/PierceBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/cleveland/LebronCavs.jpg)
Paul Pierce    19.6 PPG,  5.6 RPG,  3.2 APG, +18.2
LeBron James  31.8 PPG,  9.8 RPG,  8.2 APG,  +38.6
In Game 1, Pierce got off to a good start but seemed to struggle once hs picked up a couple quick fouls.  He finished with 13 points (5-17) and was just 1-6 from beyond the arc.  He also had 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 turnovers.   LeBron on the other hand put up 35 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks with his boo boo elbow.   There is nothing wrong with LeBron's elbow.  On at least 2 occasions I saw him clear space by shoving said elbow into the chest of a Celtic. He also never hesitated or had any limited movement in it.  Hopefully the Celtics realize that by now.   The Celtics must get a better game from Pierce both on offense and on defense in order for the Celtics to win.  Shooting 29% from the field just won't get it done. When his shot isn't falling he must take it into the paint and not continue to settle for outside shots.

Honorable Mention
(http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/261.jpg)  vs  (http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/385.jpg)
Kevin Garnett    15.8 PPG, 8.8 RPG, 2.5 APG,  +21.5
Antawn Jamison   19.4 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 1.6 APG,  +20.4
If there was one bright spot in game 1 for the Celtics, it was the play of Kevin Garnett.  He looked healthy and his lift was back, as was his lateral movement on defense.  He finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists,  2 steals and 3 blocks.  He also played great defense on Jamison who finished with 7 points, 9 rebounds, 1 steal and 2 blocks.  The Celtics will need more of the same from KG and hopefully the other two stars will come through with better play to back him up.

Players to Watch
(http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/3200.jpg) and (http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/2367.jpg)
The Celtics will depend on Big Baby and Tony Allen to give them energy off the bench and to give them a boost when the starters get a rest.  Big Baby will need to crash the boards and keep Varejao from getting so many easy rebounds and put backs in this game.

(http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/2419.jpg) and  (http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/2422.jpg)
Varejao and West are the Cavs energy guys.   The Cavs depend on both to give them a lift on both ends of the court.   Varejao had 6 rebounds in game 1, 4 of which were on the offensive end.

Game Notes
The Celtics now have to bounce back from a tough loss in game 1 and focus on trying to get a split in Cleveland.   They have some positives to take away from the first game.  KG played very well.  They showed that they can play with the Cavs when they play their game.  In the first half we saw Celtics defense and team play and they were up by 11 at the half.

But as has happened all too often this season, in the third period, they got away from their defense and got away from the team play.  The ball stopped moving and they allowed way too many easy baskets for the Cavs.    A big part of the problem was the fact that many of the Celtics were in foul trouble and it is hard to maintain aggressiveness when you are trying not to pick up your 4th or 5th foul.

The Celtics have to realize that they won't get calls, especially in Cleveland, and they need to keep playing regardless.  They can't let bad calls or no calls take them out of their game as they did in game 1.  The foul trouble and the lack of calls added to it, but the Cavs upped their intensity and the Celtics didn't match it.   They let the Cavs' defense take them out of their game.   Celtics stopped being aggressive.  They stopped going to the basket and settled for jumpers that weren't falling.  They must do a better job of keeping their focus and playing their game regardless of what the refs or the Cavs do.

Keys to the Game
Defense  Defense wins championships, period.  The Celtics did a great job of playing their style of defense in the first half, but when the Cavs came back with some tough defense of their own, the Celtics abandoned theirs.  The Celtics must play tough defense from start to finish.  They have to get stops and not try to outscore the Cavs, which they won't be able to do.

Rebound  The Celtics must do a better job on the boards.  They have to chase down rebounds and box out to get them rather than settle for the ones that come to them.   The rebounds in game 1 were even at 41, but in the first half, the Celtics out-rebounded the Cavs and they were up by 11.  But in the second half, the Celtics allowed the Cavs to get 2nd and 3rd chances at the basket.   Especially when Shaq is getting several tries at the basket, they have to foul him and make him earn it on the line.  Don't give the Cavs easy tip ins.

Take Care of the Ball

The Celtics had 16 turnovers to just 11 for the Cavs.  The Cavs were able to turn those 16 turnovers into 23 points.  The Celtics only got 10 points off of the Cavs' 11 turnovers.  They have to take better care of the ball and limit their turnovers.  Without those 13 extra points that the Cavs got from the Celtics turnovers, the Celtics win the game in spite of everything else.

Play Hard for 48 Minutes
The Celtics must play hard for 48 minutes.  They can't afford to let up or the Cavs will make them pay for it.  In the first half, they played hard on defense and were aggressive in going to the basket but as has happened too many times this season,  after the half, they let up on defense and then stopped passing the ball and allowed the Cavs to get back into the game and take the lead.  They must focus and play team ball for 48 minutes.  No let ups.

X-Factors
Officials and Focus
The officials favored the Cavs enough in game 1 that even Cavs fans were amazed by it.  The Celtics will get more of the same in game 2 and they can't let that be an excuse to lose.  If they focus on playing their game and especially on playing defense, the Celtics can win in spite of how the game is called.  Good teams focus on their game and don't allow the officials to become a distraction.   If the Celtics do that, they have a good chance to win this game.

TP FL.    Play aggressive ball on both ends of the floor.  If the Refs are going to blatently beat you and Stern wants the game degraded, it will be.  Don't let it affect your play!  Play with passion.  Don't be afraid of the Refs or of being fouled out or T'd up.  Just Play to Win for the Whole game and let the chips fall where they may!  If you do that, we will be proud of you no matter the outcome.  Good things will come of it.  Go Celts!!!

This team seems to run into trouble when Rondo is the one who is feeling it early in the game. It seems tough for Ray and Paul to get it going later on in the game when this is the case. It's a tough scenario because of Rondo's matchup advantage and how quickly he can burn Shaq in pick and roll situations. I think that's why we saw stagnation on the offensive end last game. It's easier to shut down Rondo than it is Pierce because of Rondo's shot.

TP FL. I'm very apprehensive about this game. I know it's definitely winnable but our tendency to go away from what is working well for us is what has me worried. We need to start the game with the same sense of urgency they did in Game 1 and not fall behind early. Then stay focused the rest of the way. I really hope Doc used the lessons from yesterday to come up with a topnotch 48 minutes game-plan and rotation. Goooooooo Celtics! (and Spurs)

TP, FLCeltsFan.

Celtics respond well to adversity. This won't be different. no ref, no supperstar, no homecourt will stop this team. C's on a mission. can't see Celtics losing game2.

Go Celtics

TP, FL.

I look for good things tomorrow.

We have the 2008 KG back. No limp..and according to a few posters here - no brace on his knee ;D. He looked to be on a mission last game - attacking the rim, blocking shots, etc.

Truly - Anything is Possible now.

This is not a must win but it's kind of close. We need this one or we're going to start doubting... plus, we don't have the "surprise effect" this time so I expect this game to be tougher than the first one.

Once again Rondo is key, I hope this time we go to him all the time, until the Cavs find a way to stop him (hopefully they won't).

Also, Doc has to do a better job of managing the Big Three's minutes, I thought the guys were tired at the end of the game saturday because they didn't rest enough in the 2nd half.

Hopefully Pierce will have a bounce back game, we need him to perform offensively. And I would like to see Marquis defend on LeBron in place of TA.

I think I won't be able to watch the game live now that the holidays are over, but I will see. In the worst case I will catch the replay tomorrow.

TP FL and let's go Celtics!!

7 game series are interesting beasts. By the time we get to game 5, I fully expect the series to be 2-2.

If the C's win tonight, I think Cleveland takes one in Boston.

If the C's loose tonight, I think they will defend their home court in the next two.

But anytime you can take a game on the road, you've got to finish. The edge, even for just a game or two, is taken in the series.

We didnt lose last game because of the mo williams dunk giving them energy or because Lebron had 35pts....we lost the game cause we basically got 0 production out of are bench thus making Doc panic and use are starters more. Our bench got out scored 26-12...How is nobody mention this as to why we lost the game.

I would think that each team will get a chance to blow the other one out - especially if only 1 side gets red hot from 3 point land.

Hopefully if anything, it'll be the Cavs getting blown out! I'd love to see the C's hit 10 3's in the flow of the game while KG takes it to the front line. Go Celtics!!

I think how the C's come out to start the game will tell us everything.  If they come out with purpose and determination, I think they could very well pull it off tonight.  If they come out half-heartedly or ice cold, it's going to be a long, sad night and a very short and sadder series.

I don't like Rasheed being out there against Hickson and Varejao.

Very worried about (1) offensive rebounds (2) pick and roll defense (3) transition defense

Rasheed's lack of defense better not create easy baskets for Cleveland.

At this moment in time, I think Shaq's team defense in general is abysmal. Earlier in the season, he was a flawed team defender but at least he was making good interior defensive rotations ... but since coming back from the injuries, I'm not seeing those. The number of poor/slow rotations far outweigh the solid ones.

I think O'Neal's entire contributions in team defense situations are horrific. Add in his flawed man-to-man defense (good in the paint, bad away from the paint) and you have the equivalent of Andrea Bargnani in one of his worse days.

So if Doc leaves what would you think about hiring Del Negro?  Seems to me like he actually did a pretty decent job there in Chicago.
No, I would stay away from Del Negro. I don't think he showed enough (particularly on the offensive end) to be handed the keys to a contender.

He does deserve another head coaching opportunity though ... just not with this current Celtics team.

Next year, the Celtics will enter the beginning phases of rebuilding.  I think Del Negro would be fine in that role.  In fact, he could grow with the team.

No, they're right...LeBron has learned to time it so he's not goaltending when he does that.  The players should know that against the Cavs when LeBron is on the floor if they get a fast break they need to dunk it or wait.  Otherwise, they're going to get blocked.

There is no way that Mo Williams can defend Ray Allen ... not when Ray is running off screens looking for a catch and shoot.

Mo Williams is simply too small and too poor defensively to contest that shot.

Ray Allen will consistently get a good look at the rim if they keep going to him off of those screens when Mo Williams is defending him.

Pierce has to step up in the 2nd half, KG too (looks like he switched bodies with Sheed).

not really.  last game they got jobbed big time.  this game the refs aren't manufacturing calls against the C's---they're just not calling anything on Cle.  Granted it's still unfair but if the C's were playing smarter on offense and defense, there'd be less whistles against them.  of course, the game should be called fairly where Cle should be having calls whistled against them.

naturally Stern is smiling in the stands like the Emperor just thinking he'll get his wet dream matchup of Kobe and Bron in the finals as long as the refs continue to call an unbalanced game.

Still, can't believe the C's are winning though.

Almost no team in NBA history can win a playoff game, on the road vs. a good team, with a disparity like that...unless you play near perfect basketball.

I agree the refs aren't making calls up, but there seems to be a different standard of contact allowed on each end.  They let a lot go early both ways, but after the first 6 minutes or so the calls seemed to tighten up on our end but not theirs.

That said, we're still doing pretty well.  It looks like embarrassment is doing for Sheed what pride wouldn't.  If he can play at all like this going forward, I like our chances.

How can you call 16 fouls on one team and only 4 on the other? How does one team shot 5ft and the other 18 (and one was due to a technical).

Still if we had not turned the ball over so much, we be up by 10.
I don't mind the free throw disparity as much, we fouled clearly in shooting situations more often.

At least four turnovers were off pretty clear whacks or shoves too. No calls, arghh..

How does Clev engineer these remarkable comebacks?...REFS REFS REFS-- who NEVER call anything against them on defense...C's should once again be up by like 15-20 points...but the refs REFUSE to call fouls on the Cavs.....I'm DVR-ing this game, and I counted about 6 times the whistle SHOULD have been blown---but, it's a PLAY ON in Cleveland-!!

Refs living down to expectations so far. At the half the Cavs have shot 18 free throws to 5 for the Celtics (and one of those was on a defensive 3 second call). The Celtics have got to keep their focus and not expect any calls from the refs. They must keep their aggressiveness in spite of being in foul trouble. The NBA has become a joke when you can predict ahead of time that one team or the other is going to have a huge advantage from the refs and then watch it happen.

on the bright side, Rasheed finally made it to the party. The Celtics are doing quite well to be up 4 in spite of playing 5 on 8 for the entire first half and to already have 13 less free throws than the Cavs. And they weren't just settling for jumpers. I hope that the Celtics keep up their aggression and make those refs give them some calls.

We also need something from KG.  i love the guy but he is getting killed by jemison and varajeo.  hope he'll have a big second half.

ps.  you guys talking about the refs are blind.  Cs are paying so much attention to lebron that everyone is open inside.  they have no choice but to foul.  refs are not affecing this game, i'm sorry.

we need to keep attacking the paint. if the FT disparity continues, so be it. force the issue and make it painfully obvious how overly-biased the refereeing has been in this series. and we might as well hit their guys hard more often - if we get called for touching them, we might as well make it count.

So far, it's going according to Cavs scenario in most of their games against us - C's leading by a small margin at the half, while the Cavs making a run in the second half. Hopefully, we can change this pattern tonight, but with this home refereeing, I'm not utterly optimistic.

For everyone saying that the refs don't matter or don't control the flow of the game:

10 of the 16 fouls called on the celtics came AFTER they were up by 13. Conversely, in the same span they called  0 fouls on the cavs.

So when the calls were 6-4, the celtics were up 13. Suddenly, 10 straight fouls for the cavs and the game is close again.

yeah, the issue with the calls aren't that they're wrong (though it is the playoffs, refs should let some touch fouls go), it's that the cavs get to play more physical on defense with no calls. that's the issue. i get home court advantage, refs usually give you some calls. but you can't force one team to not play physical defense while allowing the other one to do so. most of our turnovers are actually fouls on cleveland. if they don't call them, fine, but then don't call fouls on us for less physical defense.

My ode to "double"

Double-Double for Rajon.
Double digit lead in FTs for the Cavs.
Double digit lead in points for the Cs.
Double the pain for us all if the Cs lose.

Why is it that Lebron can take extra steps?

Anyone care to explain rationally?

$

But.  Anybody remember Game 6 against the Pistons in 08?  That awful offensive Salvatore called on Pierce as he made a 3?  We didn't fold after that, and we didn't make excuses.  We stepped on their throats and we sent em home.

Champions don't let the refs take games from them.  If we deserve to win a title we can overcome some bad calls.

The refs can call whatever they want to call - nothing we can do about it.  But we are winning this game.

These last 2.5 minutes are key...if we go into the 4th up 18+, we're looking good.  If we go in up 10-14, it gets a lot tougher.

So proud of this team right now.  We just need our bench to break even for a bit and we can go home with the split.

Wow - the hypocrite (me) had to check back in. A lot has changed since halftime.

Calls have evened out very quickly. Interestingly, it's happened as the Celtics have played better. I'd assume a correlation. But man, I'm shaking my head at this stuff.

That non-call on the LBJ travel was my single greatest non-call of the year. I laughed out loud it was so blatant. How do you miss THAT?

A lot of this quarter just comes down to us making shots. Because we've kept turning the ball over here and there.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say we win this game. Either that or the Celtics are about to commit the worst blown lead of their entire season and this website may melt down from the angry post-game discussions.

Oh, I'm TERRIFIED.

Worried they're gonna hit Rondo hard on a drive and injure him.

Irrational?
Actually I'm half expecting Cle to take that kind of cheap shot -- and have the foul called on Rondo

Hey guys, I dont talk much on the game threads anymore bc I always spend more time looking at my computer than the game, but I just wanted to drop in and say how utterly irritated I am that the Celtics defense is getting no credit at all from the announcers, this is all happening bc of Lebrons elbow......nevermind that he put up 30 points on saturday, but the elbow is the reason today.

I can't blame them for talking about it; it's a factor. KG's knee was a factor last year, and they talked about it then.  LeBron has looked very reluctant to shoot jumpers this game.  I wonder if Pierce hurt him when he took a shot at it on that breakaway in the 1st.

Yeah, there's something wrong with him. He doesn't look like the same player. Not as aggressive (or much more selectively aggressive)

Nothing wrong with how the TNT guys have talked about his injury unless you have an anti-Lebron agenda.

Yeah but Garnett wasnt playing....at all, the entire playoffs.  Lebron put up 30 points two days ago and was fine.  But the next night he has a bad game and it has to be the elbow?  Hes not capable of having an off night, or god forbid the celtics played good defense??

It is absurd how much crap we have to deal with Lebron. I lost track of all the bailouts, but there have been at least 7 absurd calls in Lebron's favor in the 4th quarter alone.

As frustrating and scary as that was, the lead never even got under 10.  Great, great game.  Homecourt is OURS!!!

Now we've gotta hold on to it.  This Cavs team won't give up.  We're gonna have to take this series from them.

Scary moments at the end but it would not have been a Celtics game if we didn't have that scary moment down the stretch uh?

Awesome, awesome win. I'm glad I stayed up.

We stole homecourt and we got our mission accomplished. Now we have plenty of rest and to take care of homecourt starting Friday.

Great game by Rajon and the rest of the guys (except Pierce).

TP's everybody and hurrah for the C's, I'm so glad!

LeBron was tentative all game until it was too late, I don't think we'll see that again. Nor will we see Sheed hitting almost everything. This series is only going to get nastier and tougher.

In my mind, Game 3 on Friday night is a must win. The team will have almost 4 days rest and if they can come out and win on Friday I think major doubt and memories of last year's ECFs start to creep back into the Cleveland psyche.

A win in Game 3 goes a long, long way towards putting the Cavs away.

If even with the great win we had tonight.  It's gonna take me the night to sleep off that 15-0 run by the Cavs to truly enjoy this win, but I sure am going to enjoy it tomorrow.  I had all the confidence that we were going to win, but that fourth quarter was the longest I've ever watched.

Why when we go into the fourth especially up double digits do we always have to get stagnant and not run the offense?

I do worry that Mike Brown will give up on Shaq in Game 3 and pull him quickly. The C's are able to get so many easy looks when he's on the floor.

I think his elbow is like most nagging injuries, it just depends on the night. Pierce took a nice whack at it very early in the game, I wouldn't be surprised if that numbed up his right arm for much of the game.

LeBron's on now, talking about his elbow.

It might be dinged up, but he's not hurt any worse than Pierce or KG.

My hope is that this foul disparity will even out in Boston. If it doesn't, then I must believe that something's up..

nice win boys...cable crapped out and had to go to the bar, couldn't watch it with you all...but was reading on my phone the game thread which kept me sane in he first half with the foul discrepancy and all so tp's for all for that alone.

solid win. fourth quarter was a little scare but happy to come back to boston 1-1, though could be 2-0, oh well. i think we saw who the better team is tonight, hope they keep it up.

That link is for the live video. You have to go to http://www.nba.com/video/ for the archived videos. It's not up yet but they usually put up the post-game stuff pretty quickly.

I cannot believe they actually have the highlights of the Cavs 4th quarter run up there in the videos. Didn't know they were now featuring comebacks that fell short as highlights. How come our 1001 failed comebacks this season never made the cut.

Absolutely (TP) ... it's amazing how much this guy gets away with, and his absurd "crab-walk/stutter-step" excuse! I loved Chuck tonight, too, the first thing he says is "I'm not gonna make excuses for LeBron, but ... " then goes about making excuses for him. LBJ himself did the same thing in his post-game interview ... really nauseates me.  :P

How nice would it be to protect homecourt, come back to Cleveland 3-1 and finish them off at there place in in 5? All while the Hawks give the Magic fits....and beats them up.

I beleive.

Boston isn’t going away. All these supposed old men just keep coming and coming and coming, still convinced a championship can be theirs. They’ve got too many weapons. They’ve got too much heart.

I don't know about the "too many weapons" part, but I agree with "too much heart".
