Boston Celtics (45-24) at Utah Jazz (45-25)
Monday, March 22

Game #70, Road Game #37
TV:  CSN-NE, FSR-UT, NBA-LP 760-761
Energy Solutions Arena

Few teams in the NBA can say that they have had the same amount of success as the Utah Jazz have had at Energy Solution Arena. Since the team’s move to this arena more than 15 years ago, the Jazz have had only one losing season. After the Jazz moved from New Orleans after the 1978-79 season they began playing at the Salt Palace. For just over a decade they played at the 12,0000 seat arena. As the 1990s approached, a new modern arena with more seats was needed for the Jazz. Owner of the team, Larry Miller, funded the $93 million cost to construct a new arena.
Construction began in May 1990 and was completed in record time, 17 months later. Originally known as the Delta Center, the Jazz played their first game at the arena on October 4, 1991. Located on the western part of downtown Salt Lake City, the arena has a seating capacity of 19,911 that includes 668 club seats and 56 luxury suites. In August 1999, the roof was significantly damaged by a tornado, causing $3.75 million in damage. Energy Solutions bought the naming rights to the arena in November 2006, thus it is known as Energy Solutions Arena. The Utah Jazz have been one of the best teams in the NBA while playing at Energy Solutions Arena, appearing in the playoffs 13 times in 16 years.

Key Matchups
(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/RondoBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/utah/DwilliamsUta.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs  Deron Williams
Rondo has yet another tough matchup with one of the top young PG's in the league.   Williams is strong and quick and Rondo will need to be aggressive on both ends of the court.

(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/PierceBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/utah/MilesUTA.jpg)
Paul Pierce vs CJ Miles
Paul Pierce has been hitting his stride in the last few games.  His aggressiveness has gotten the team off to a good start and his clutch play down the stretch has willed the team to the wins.  Hopefully Pierce will continue his strong play in this one.

Honorable Mention
Kevin Garnett vs Carlos Boozer
KG has been looking good in recent games and should continue his improvement in this game.  He has a height advantage over Boozer and hopefully that will allow him to get his shot off over him.

Game Notes

 The Celtics are currently leading the season series, 1-0; Celtics and Jazz split the season series 1-1 in the 2008-09 season
 Rajon Rondo led the Celtics with 20.0 points per game last season
 Paul Millsap led the Jazz with 20.0 points per game against the Celtics last season
 The Celtics are 7-4 against the Jazz since the 2004-05 season
 The Celtics are leading the all-time series 45-35 with the Celtics 29-11 at home

The Celtics beat the Jazz 105-86 in Boston back in February.  However, at that time, Deron Williams was just coming off an injury and they had 3 other key players out as well.    On the other hand, The Celtics had Big Baby and Tony Allen out so neither team was at full strength, but the Jazz definitely were depleted by injuries.

These two teams have almost the same record and are both 7-3 in their last 10 games.  The Celtics are 24-12 on the road while the Jazz are a very good home team with a 28-8 home record.  The Celtics have won 4 in a row while the Jazz are going for their 2nd straight win.   Both are also relatively healthy for this matchup.

Both teams are fighting for playoff position and so are motivated to get the win.  Boston is in the 3rd spot in the East, just half a game up on Atlanta and 3.5 games behind Orlando. They would like to at least stay in that 3rd spot.  Utah is 4th in the West and are 1.5 games behind Dallas for 3rd and 1.5 games ahead of Phoenix for 5th.

The Celtics have already won the first 2 games on this 3 games in 4 nights road trip and it would be huge for them to close it out with another victory.   It will be a tough game but if they play like they have been recently, they should be up for the task.

Keys to the Game
Defense  Over the past several games, we have seen the Celtics return to their trademark lock down team defense.  They will need to continue to play this kind of defense as they go down the stretch in preparation of the playoffs.   Defense becomes more and more important the closer they get to the post season.

Rebound
We have seen a much better effort on the boards in the last few games and that needs to continue.   They need to continue to put out more effort on the boards to limit second chance points  and fast breaks for the Jazz.

Bench
The Celtics have a deep bench and a talented one,  and the Celtics will need them to contribute in order to allow the starters to rest while still maintaining or widening a lead.  The bench will be the difference between a close game and a blowout.

Don't Over-rely on the 3
The Celtics have at times relied too much on the 3 point shot. They have players who can slash to the basket and players who can score inside and if the 3's aren't falling they need to go to the basket.

X-Factor

Focus
The Celtics are coming off 2 big wins and heading home after this one.  It would be easy to lose focus.  Hopefully, the Celtics have their eyes on the bigger prize in the playoffs and will continue to focus on each game to give them the best position as they head into the post season.

TP for the work on the thread.

I actually think Utah is going to be very tough to defend against... in particular Boozer & Williams.  Our frontline isn't very quick, and Boozer is lightning fast around the hoop.  Deron Williams is pretty strong and might cause some problems that way.

Should be a great game!

I know it's still 23 hours away but I am getting psyched for this game as the C's recent play is starting to get me pumped.

TP to FL for another great thread

BTW game threads lately have become a fun place to be again. I don't know if there is anyone to thank for this(probably the Celtics first and foremost for better play but that's not who I mean), then thank you!!!

It's fine hehe, somehow I thought I might've missed the game or something.

Hopefully we can keep the streak going, but the Jazz always give us a tough game.

Celtics have had their share of struggles in Utah. Somehow, I think they will keep their recommittment to defense and rebounding going and try for a perfect road trip. That would send a message to the rest of the league that WE MUST BE RECKONED WITH.

I would be absolutely stunned if the C's didn't come out with another full effort tonight.  Looking for a solid win over another really good team on the road.

Always looking for good signs that the team has picked up its play and is committing to winning games.

Exactly, this is what I want to see. I'm not going to get crazy if they lose tonight. They are after all playing one of the top 7-8 teams in the league on the road.

But, if they come out and play good defense and move the ball and generally give an excellent effort but for some reason the shots don't fall or the calls don't go their way or the Jazz just play better than they do, I can live with that and still be very, very encouraged about the team. It's kind of the way I felt after the Milwaukee loss in Milwaukee. The C's played really good ball. The Bucks simply played better that night and to me, that was an encouraging sign.

Huge advantage on the wings for the Celtics. That will likely be the deciding factor in the game.

Either they show up and they do their job and vastly outplay the opposition or they fail to do so and give Utah a great opening and opportunity to win the game.

I was thinking the same thing but I won't mention it.

It will be nice to win this game and have KG play well...I'd like some vindication.

Sheed or Perk or KG absolutely must keep tabs on Okur..that guy will pop threes all day long if we're not careful.

April. They said it before; April. He'll be shooting well by April.

And honestly, his field goals, well, I haven't got the stats, but whether he hits 'm more often or not; it seems like he's found his spot and isn't afraid to take them anymore.

That's a whole lot of comma's in one line.

I really want this one more than any game in a long time, after those classy Jazz fans celebrated when KG hurt his knee last year (check the clip - two-thirds of the arena stood up and cheered).

There isn't a more hateful fan base in the NBA. They make LA fans look classy (but not clueless - LA owns that category hands down).

We'll probably see some cross matchups, with KG covering the perimeter oriented Okur and Perk staying with Boozer.

Williams strength has really caused some problems for Rondo in the past.  However, Williams' PT seems to be limited (shoulder) over the last few games as he has not played more than 32 minutes in 4 games.

Watch out for Paul Millsapp! He's the type of player that gives our team fits (Craig Smith with a lot more talent) and has been on a tear over the last week. In our early season meeting he has 13 rebs (5 off) in just 23 minutes.

GO C's!

I have a feeling it's all going to come down to which team's shots are falling from behind the arc.

When the Celtics beat the Jazz earlier this year, the Jazz couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from 3 point land.  I have a feeling they won't have such woes this time around.

He really is becoming a force off the bench. Love him. Hate him. Hate that he gets his shot blocked a lot. Whatever.

There's no denying that he has been a rather special bench player for this team for the better part of the last month.

Those calls should be made by a time keeper or a forth Ref that does 3 second calls and 8 second half court and 3 second lane calls.

If playing those five guys the way Doc is using them means that the starters are fresh enough to go on 27-11 runs to end games, like in Dallas, I'm okay with that

If only we had a guy who was like a starter, but could come off the bench keeping the starting-5 fresh and together. Maybe an old all-star type who's past his prime, but can still be a real contributor to the team in limited minutes.

When Nate's shot is on, it just doesn't matter where the shot is taken or where the defender is: it's going in.

With MF out there we have shooting on the second unit. I love the second 5. They keep the starters fresh and they can play.

Refs are, admittedly, helping dig the Jazz a hole now.

I wonder if there's any connection to the fan's reaction. When for all the world it seems like the home team is getting the calls and the crowd boos on an obvious one (say, Korver in the circle on a blocking foul), they maybe get a little p---ed.

It's because they are playing with championship energy. When they do that they dont need their horses. They will win with their experience. Thats what happened in 08 when Ray struggled for 2 rounds and Rondo wasnt the player he is today.

It's because Williams is one of the chosen ones who gets all the calls and is spoken of as if he's the second best point in the NBA. When Rondo is the better player and he was in front of Williams and he ran over Rondo and it was a bad cheap call. He needs to channel his anger better.

Might be. Deron is areally tough matchup for Rondo. He might have taken this defensive assignment personally and is getting frustrated in the way he is being called. He cant really complain though given the way the refs have called Utah's frontcourt.

what the heck, the game has already started?!!  The first page of the thread says "10:30 PM ET"... is that not 10:30 Eastern Time?  I based my whole night around tuning in around 10:30.. uggh.

Ouch, you're missing a good one. Second half should be even better!

What's up with Quis lately? In this stretch seems like he's been playing kinda poorly.

I honestly think the reffing could be a net negative for us. We deserve to be winning this game, but the calls we're getting are firing up the Jazz.

Veteran teams play through runs. Phil Jackson never calls timouts during runs.

I would do the same thing. Why give a team that just exerted a bunch of energy making a run a break?

Good to know that in the NBA, you can break someone's nose, or elbow them in the eye and then proceed to score an and-one.

Awesome.

The refs are definately making up for some of the calls that went our way in the first half.

Even besides that though, the Jazz are just playing better in this 3rd quarter.  It's that simple.  They're ball movement is much better and they're hitting shots.  Combine that with us missing shots and you have a 5 point lead at the half turn into a 10 point deficit.

Usually I'm quick to blame the Celtics.  But the Jazz came out with a fire they didn't have at the beginning of the game.

I disagree with that strategy. I read a study one time that fished out data from ESPN play by plays and showed that timeouts do, in fact, stop runs or slow them down compared to not calling them. I can't for the life of me find that study now.

Given that Rasheed is shooting a career low, and he's a decidedly average three-point shooter, that's quite a bad sign for someone who used to take 10+ threes per game.

If there's a comeback happening, it has to start right after this timeout.

Tale of two halves almost.

With 1-2 minutes left in the 1st half C's were up 12. Since then they have been outscored by 25.

Very disappointing to see the Celtics collapse tonight.  They really have been playing well and had seemingly turned a corner.  It's so deflating to see them get absolutely dominated in the second half again.  It seemed they were beyond this type of game but obviously not.  They have been blown out in this half and a few bad calls weren't the cause.

Okur has killed KG in this half he just isn't quick enough anymore to keep up.

Tough game to watch === never thought the C's would put up a game like this anymore...

Every year they're everyones dark horse and every year they stink it up in the second round.  Are they a good team? Sure.  Are they a championship contender? No, they never will be with the other teams in the west combined with the makeup of their current team.

If the C's lose like this to the Nuggets and the Cavs this week then there won't be any question that they are a solid step below the best teams in the league.

I feel like the Jazz brand of "physical" basketball is a lot of fouls assuming the ref can't call everything. Especially when they are at home and every call that is made against them gets booed.

Rondo's 3rd & 4th fouls were turning points. He lost control a bit and then the team was rudderless.

I agree we let them have open shots and they got hot from the 3 pt line..and when that happens its tough to beat the team (esp when we aren't hitting our shots)

But despite the loss am not going to start ranting on the team....Nuggets game is coming up and that too at home...and I expect the guys to bounce back with a win.

Go C's !!

It'd be cool if we had a center who could hit threes ::)

I'm sorry..I'd still take Perkins over Okur or Bargnani.

Dwight or Shaq would shred both of these guys. Not Perk.

He meant Sheed... I know its been a long day.

I feel like the Jazz brand of "physical" basketball is a lot of fouls assuming the ref can't call everything. Especially when they are at home and every call that is made against them gets booed.

Jazz earned those calls in the second half. They were - in a word - awesome.

If the C's lose like this to the Nuggets and the Cavs this week then there won't be any question that they are a solid step below the best teams in the league.

We played well tonight, IMO... we just got beat. It happens. But I def liked our energy tonight.

Shockingly the 1st thing that comes to mind when I remember that game from last season was how brutal the officiating was. Even by Bavetta's standards it was bad. And I hear tonight wasn't the great either.

I will give the Utah crowd credit.  No alcohol, a bunch of mormons...and yet they're insanely energetic.  They boo the crap out of the refs when a call doesn't go their way and cheer louder then ever when the team does well.

They, meaning both the crowd and Jazz, seem to be a bunch of talkers.  I mean, the celtics talk more than any team in the league so I know this statement isn't really needed.  But at least we talk, and if we can clamp down, we can back it up and actually maybe win a title.

This Jazz team can talk, play as good as they possibly can, and won't even come out of the second round.  Talk it up Jazz, enjoy your home regular season wins.

Chicken or the egg. I though the Celtics were really aggressive and energetic in the first half AND for the first 5 minutes of the 2nd. The refs then started calling ticky tac fouls and not rewarding aggressiveness but rather punishing it.

See? You can spin it either way.

Bottom line they lost in a hostile environment. To beat the Jazz at home you have to play with the energy they did in the first half AND not turn the ball over. They got 1/2 right. Im still encouraged and I like what I saw tonight. Unless this game puts them in a tailspin, this team is still trending up IMO.

Problems of tonights game:

1) Utah's intensity of the 3rd Qtr
2) Turnovers
3) 3 point defense
4) Referees

We got our butts whipped in Utah just like every other team that plays there at Poor Energy Stadium.

Forget the refs, forget the lack of a timeout bu Doc to start the second half, the Celtics just got out hustled and out muscled and out shot from the 2 minutes lewft mark of the first half on.

I can't forget those Refs they were the mvp tonight.

Please. The Jazz earned that win.

I guess.  I saw a badly called game that was taken out of the players hands in every way. You see it as a fair contest were the better team won. I hope we meet the Jazz in the finals!

Yep -- every time the Celts lose it is on the refs.  ::)

Not every time. Every game in the NBA is not fairly called in my opinion. But you see it as a fair and even league so we disagree. Ok.

We'll see in May and June who the best team is and I bet anything it won't be the Jazz!

I'll call this one the Okur show..he was the one who hurt us. Deron didn't shoot particularly well..Boozer played well, but that's it.

Certainly would've been nice to have this one, but we'll show up for Denver.

Pierce didn't play well?

Are you serious about Williams? He completely controlled the second half.

Deron was 5-14 from the field. He made half of his points from the charity stripe.

And yet - he still completely controlled the second half.

Good Point. Can't argue with that.

Yeah he is an awesome player and it's about time he started getting credit for his defense. I cant think of another guy in the past 20 years that is like him. Strong, fast, shooter, passer, smart.

I mean hes not the 2nd coming of Magic or Cousy or anything just a really unique player who competes pretty hard.

Doc just said that they lost in the last 2 minutes of the 1st half----up 13, we stopped playing and let them right back into it.......sounds familiar.

I hope we don't get too harsh with our criticism tonight....4 days back we would have gladly accepted the 2-3 road record. The energy was still good. A guy named Okur was hot from beyond the arc....and unfortunately he happened to be on the opposition's roster. No biggie.

If Doc thought it was all on the players why did he go way out of his way, by clapping for like a minute, to get tossed and show up the refs. It was a hard night on the road against good shooting and poor calls. You can't win them all.....

We let the Jazz finish the 1st half on an 8-0 run, and start the 2nd half on a 9-0 run....Game Over.

But, 2-1 on this trip was [dang] good.

For sure. Wins over the Mavs and Rockets is fine by me. We're still playing a lot better than we were several weeks ago. One loss doesn't really change that. It happens.

I only caught the end of the game so I won't criticize yet but I wanted to note that a lot of games have been lost because of someone getting hot beyond the arc. The 3 point defense has been an Achilles heel this season worsened by the fact that we're not shooting as well from there ourselves. I think if we get that under control we'd be in much better shape.

Well, considering the unfortunate thing that happened to KG last yr when we visited the Jazz, I'll take this loss.

As long as KG didn't hurt himself on a freak play, I'm good.

Need every man up for next 3 months. Mid-June is a long way away.

We're pretty good at 3 pt defense. 2nd in the league behind the Lakers. We were honestly running out on their guys for most of them(especially Okur) and they were still Onions.

Every they call pro Celtic in the first half went anti Celtic in the second half. In the end, the calls were about even.

I know you said you got in late, but honestly the first 5 minutes of the game were horribly reffed in Utah's favor. I remember thinking when the game was 13-12 that it should really be 17-6. Pierce got fouled on 3 consecutive plays and he couldn't get a call. He hit 2 of the 3 shots, btw.

People are saying we got the calls in the second quarter and I didn't really agree at the time. (I didn't think the reffing was one-sided in the Dallas game like a lot of people here did so different eyes see different angles on the game and you gotta respect that. A good example is that a lot here wanted a foul on Millsap for the elbow to Baby's nose, but I saw it as incidental contact that can happen on a clean play.) I only noticed one call where Davis got a generous call on a double pump in that second quarter. Boozer and Millsap really were hacking.

Ed Malloy is a guy I have questioned for a while, but it's clear this team lost focus on that Deron Williams drive where he bullrushed Rondo. The team has to keep its cool and Rondo played on tilt after that point from my view. You have to expect bad calls in a basketball game and this team has been pretty good about it for the past few months.(even Sheed!)

Just saw the game... disappointed but not that much.

I hate the job the referees did though. We were getting every single call for the most part of the 2nd quarter so you knew that Utah would get all the calls in the 2nd half. Unfortunately they started getting these calls at the end of the 2nd and they reduced considerably our big lead of 12 points. I hate it when refs strike over for one team during entire stretches, this is so frustrating. For example, Utah couldn't touch a Celtic player at some point and yet in the third it was OK for them to throw elbows at Baby or get steals on every play because the refs decided it was time to help Utah... just let them play the game, [dang]!

The laggy broadcast didn't help me to enjoy this game, very ugly one I thought. The Jazz (or, just Memo actually) got on fire in the 3rd. I liked that we answered their big run though and we could have tied the game if Rondo didn't lose the ball on a crucial play. I thought the ball was clearly out of bounds on that play, yet they let Memo initiate the fastbreak and from then on we fell down again to never come back.

The bench made me think we could get back multiple times when we got back to 7 points differential but we couldn't get any stops or rebounds when we desperately needed to... the Boozer block on Ray summed up the story of the Znd half. :-\

Anyway, any loss is a bad one but it's really a shame we didn't benefit from this game to make some separation on the Hawks. There is no way they win against Orlando Wednesday so we have to take care of the Nuggets at home!

Very good road-trip anyway. Just very disappointed by the bench. Davis had a good game once again but other than him... Quisy was OK in the end and Finley hit some shots. But overall I'm very disappointed by Nate. I thought he was supposed to be much "more of a scorer" than Eddie and yet he only makes 3's and when he (rarely) attempts a drive he never scores. I hope it changes soon!

The calls must have had doc & sloan ready to throw chairs.  I didn't have a good feeling when the c's were up 7 or so at half and they had gotten (deserved or not) lots & lots of calls.  You knew wwf oops I mean nba style the 2nd half the ref's calls would change.  I feel deron williams , this year, is the best pg in the nba.  This doesn't mean I think he can lower the shoulder/elbow and physically go through rondo.
I liked the game the jazz played and hope they can give lakers fits in playoffs, if okur shoots like that they look pretty good.  I believe the celtics kept minutes down for everyone, again playoffs are the big picture.  Davis looked really good 1st half as did robinson.

Rondo checked out mentally and was trying too hard to match Deron. Sheed was non-existent. Two biggest factor as to why we took the L.

I gotta agree. What jdpapa said is encouraging, but it looked like Utah was given too much time to shoot the 3's. I didn't like that. If it wasn't Okur, it was Miles. As I said in the chat, maybe the fact the Jazz had a big man in Okur who could shoot from long range put a bigger strain on our perimeter defense.

It sucked we lost this game, but it doesn't mean we took a step back, necessarily. However, we have to bring it against Denver on our court. Definitely.

Go look at the +/- for that game. You want to blame someon don't blame Rasheed. He was tied for the highest on the team with a positive 3. He blocked 3 shots and was playing hard defense while out there. Every single starter was double digit negatives. You are dead on with Rondo though. He looked like he was more interested in proving he was better than Williams than winning. What he proved is that he can't hold Williams' jock. Williams IMO is the best PG in the league. Rondo is tier 2 still until he gets a jumper and can hit a free throw. Oh, and keep his man in front of him.

Watching the game now on the noon replay, (CSNNE), and while we gave up a lot in the 3rd quarter, I see a lot more positive than negative. The 4th qtr is just starting, and while I know already that we lost this one, I'm really not that disappointed in what I've seen so far ... there have been WAY too many turnovers, but they're hustling and executing well. The Jazz are on fire ... gotta say seriously, Utah has some great fans ... that building is loud!

Man, I love Sheed when he works on the post, he could own this game if he stayed there more ... then I hate him when he settles for those horrible threes and doesn't play defense. Sheed could've been a major power in this league if he had set his mind to it, but he just doesn't seem to take it seriously, and gives around 60 to 70% most of the time.

Everything just went Utah's way in the second half ... including the officiating. Despite all the turnovers, we still played a decent game, and I'm not all that bummed about this loss. The Boyz are going to lose once-in-a-while, even when they're playing well. A lot of good to take away from this one. Doc should've gotten ejected a lot sooner ... it may have supplied the energy to turn the tide. Ed Malloy's a jerk. I'd give the C's a B- in this one ... Utah fans get an A. ;)
