Key Matchups
(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/RondoBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/chicago/DuhonChi.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Chris Duhon
Rajon Rondo is the engine that makes this team run.  When Rondo is aggressive and drives to the basket and sets the pace of the game, the Celtics play so much better than when he is tentative.  He needs to set the tone for the starters right from the beginning.  He should have a very good game against Duhon

(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/RAllenBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/houston/TMacHou.jpg)
Ray Allen vs Tracy McGrady
Ray Allen has been playing his best basketball of the season and TMac had a great first game with the Knicks.  Hopefully Ray will stay hot and since McGrady hasn't been playing until recently, Ray should have more stamina and be able to outlast TMac.

Honorable Mention
Nate Robinson vs Eddie House
This will be a fun matchup to watch between two players who were traded for each other.  Eddie shot the lights out in his first game with the Knicks and will be looking to light up the Celtics as well.  Nate hasn't had a practice with the Celtics and so Doc said they would mostly run pick and rolls when he is in.

Team Connections
Doc Rivers played for the Knicks from 1992-95..
Tom Thibodeau was an assistant coach with New York from 1996-2002
Eddie House played for the Celtics from 2007-10 and was a part of the 2008 championship team
J.R. Giddens and Bill Walker also played for the Celtics
from 2008-10
Nate Robinson was a member of the Knicks from 2005-10
Al Harrington and Marquis Daniels were teammates in Indiana during the 2006-07 season.

Game Notes
 The Celtics are currently leading the season series, 1-0; Celtics won the season series 3-1 against New York in 2008-09
 Paul Pierce led the Celtics with 24.0 points per game last season
 Al Harrington led the Knicks with 22.3 points per game last season against the Celtics
 The C’s are 17-4 against the Knicks since the 2004-05 season
 The Celtics are leading the all-time series 267-169 with the Celtics 144-59 at home

This game should have more emotion than any Celtics/Knicks game in recent memory.    This will be Nate Robinson's debut with the Celtics and Eddie's first game back to the Garden as a Knick.   I am sure Eddie will receive a warm welcome but he will do his best to bury his old team in a shower of 3's.   We have no idea what to expect from Nate but it is certain that he also will do his best to help his new team beat his old team.

With the addition of Eddie and Tracy McGrady, the Knicks won't be quite as easy to beat as they have been in the past.  In their first meeting this season in New York, the Celtics won by 2 points in overtime.   The Knicks have been slumping, having gone 1-9 in their last 10 games.   The Celtics have been picking up the pace and even though they are 6-4 in their last 10 games, they have won 3 of their last 4 games.   The Knicks are 7-17 on the road while the Celtics are 15-9 at home.   The Knicks last won in Boston in November 2006.

The Knicks are playing in back to back games, having played the Bucks the night before.   But, in spite of that, I am sure they will be up for this game.    Tracy McGrady is trying to prove to one and all that he can still play. However, in last night's game against the Bucks he came up limping once again and at this point, his status against the Celtics isn't known.    We know that Eddie House will be motivated to put on a show.  And, an underrated addition to the team is Sergio Rodriguez, who is a handful off the bench.

Just when the Celtics thought they were finally healthy, the Captain came up with a thumb injury.   He is questionable for this game and it would be a good thing for Doc to sit him in this game because he hasn't been very effective in the past 2 games since hurting his thumb.    I would guess that Doc will start Tony if Pierce does sit out, but it also could be Marquis Daniels.

Keys to the Game
Defense The Celtics had gotten back to their tough team defense in the first 3 games of the road trip, but against the Nuggets, they slacked off again.  They need to bring that defensive focus game in and game out.

Rebound   The Celtics have been allowing other teams to out rebound them.  They need to make a concerted effort to grab rebounds on both the offensive and defensive ends.   David Lee is very good at tip ins and put backs and the Knicks will be looking to run on defensive rebounds so the Celtics must crash the boards to limit both of those options for the Knicks.

Rondo's Aggression As goes Rondo, so goes the team.  Rondo must be aggressive and set the pace of the game and take the ball inside.  He can't be tentative because that makes the whole team tentative.

Focus The Celtics tend to lose focus from time to time, especially at home for some bizarre reason.  They have to make a statement over the last part of the season and so they have to come out focused in each and every game and they have to re-establish home dominance.

X-Factor
First Home Game After Road Trip
The first home game after a road trip tends to be a let down game.  Hopefully the Celtics will be focused on getting back to dominance and not let this happen.

It'll be nice to see the ovation for Eddie tomorrow night.

I'm definitely interested in the point guard matchups.  What should be especially fascinating is seeing Eddie trying to defend Rondo at some point.  It might not be pretty if you're a Knicks fan.

Obviously, the biggest thing to be looking for is how well Nate meshes with this team.

Yeah, E House guarding Rondo might get awkward.

Bottom line is, the C's need to win this one large not only for confidence sake but for the resting of the older guys due to what is coming up on Thursday night.

Do not take the Knicks lightly.  Let's jump on them and keep the peddle to the metal.

How strange is it to read that?

I still miss Eddie, but he will get a big standing ovation tomorrow, it will be great to watch!

Like I said in another thread, I hope the C's will win this game in impressive fashion to re-establish their homecourt advantage because they have not done that at all this season... now that they seem to have "turned the switch" let's hope they switch it even better in Boston!

Definitely a fun game to watch with many subplots. It will be kind of akward and fun, indeed, to see Eddie defend on Rondo at some point.

I'm really excited to see Nate's debut as a Celtic, let's hope he does well! And I would be glad to see the Captain sitting for this one in order to get some rest and to heal his thumb and his knees.

TP FL and let's go C's!

KG  should have a HUGE game. Is Gallo really their starting PF for the future? That seems ridiculous.

Glen Davis frustrates me to no end.  He got a great offensive rebound and kicked it out to Ray Allen (which was an awesome play), then proceed to make 3 stupid consecutive moves:

1) Stood right under the hoop and didn't even jump for the defensive rebound that went right by him, thus leading to an easy 2 for the Knicks

2) Is with Rondo on a fast break and proceeds to run right at Rondo and bring his man to clog the lane, resulting in the ball going out of bounds (as opposed to spreading the floor)

3)  Lazy defense that lead to an easy two with the foul.

I want to like Davis, really I do!  But at this point, I really can't... especially when he's replacing KG lol.. that's a painful drop off.

I've been all over Perk's offensive game lately, but he is always extremely solid on defense. The Knicks constant pick and rolls and athletic bigs are giving him issues tonight.

Let's hope Doc yells at Perk at halftime for his defensive collapses, and at the whole team for the poor, poor defense.

I'm expecting a big 3rd quarter run by the C's.

By the way, Harringston is really a ballhog, Tommy was right when he said you could send 5 guys to him and he wouldn't pass the ball anyway!

Is anyone surprised by this performance so far?  I must admit watching the Portland game I thought the team was beyond giving up big leads especially at home against horrible teams.  Cannot even fathom how they can come out in their first home game in quite awhile and play such putrid defense giving up 60 points.

The C's needed to come out and put the Knicks away early, showing that their home court dominance was back and the defensive intensity was ready to reappear at home.  Obviously that didn't happen and it appears the C's problems are nowhere near solved at this point.

The Knicks are a horrid team and the C's just let them score at will --- shocking display of putrid defensive basketball at home against an inferior team once again...

Plus, it's common for teams to struggle in their first game back at home after a road-trip, it's well-known.

Although it doesn't make it easier to see that Rodriguez is 4/5 from the field and has 5 assists and 4 rebounds. ::)

Well nothing has changed so far in the second half - Knicks getting wide open 3 point looks at any time.  The C's are also managing to give up rebounds to David Lee for easy putbacks.  The defense is playing no better than in the first half.  Figured the C's would come out fired up and ready to go but obviously not as a 7 point lead is gone in a flash.  Same old story so far against a terrible team at home...

Just got home from a good high school state tournament game where both teams actually played defense. Celtics should be up by 50 points and should be getting a layup every time down the court. I guess though that this is just one of those games where they are playing down to the level of their opponent.

If the C's would just play a tiny bit of defense this game will become a blowout --- shouldn't be too much to ask at home against one of the NBA's worst teams but it appears to be so.

ZERO defense on the 3 point line.  The Knicks are running the same play EVERY time and getting wide open looks from  it.

Really, no team is playing defense right now, it's mind-boggling to see the Knicks get WIDE OPEN shots (and threes) on every possession. Fortunately Marquis, Ray and Rondo are getting the work done offensively but come on, this is embarrassing, there is no defense at all from the C's.

Great play Tony leaving Walke WIDE OPEN for 3.  The C's appear intent on not defending the 3 point line.  They would rather collapse on the drives and leave shooters open every single time.

If they play even 3 minutes of great defense this game would be OVER.

And ANOTHER wide open 3 for the Knicks COME ON PLAY SOME DEFENSE

Will the Celtics play any defense tonight to close out this game?

These Knicks are a horrible team and all the guys talked about starting off strong at home after the road trip.

To see this effort on defense is shocking.  The C's look incapable of defending simple pick and rolls or drive and dish plays.

The offense has now become stagnant as well with isolations and shot clock violations.

The C's cannot afford to lose this game and start their homestand with another devastating collapse.  HOpe they wake up before it's too late...

Regardless of the final outcome tonight the apparent progress made on the road trip hasn't carried over to playing in Boston.

The defense has been non existent tonight.  The C's appear unable to stop basic pick and roll basketball or defend the 3 point line.  After the encouraging signs on the road trip it really seemed the team would come out tonight and be fired up.  A big win against a terrible team was the expected start but that obviously hasn't been the case.

Unfortunately it looks like nothing much has changed and that the Portland game was an aberration.

Wait a minute here. There are so many posters who want to ignroe every Celtics bad effort and only focus on the good. This team was great in one game on the trip, good in a second, and mediocre in two others. And tonight they are struggling against one of the worst teams in the NBA. That is not championship caliber.

WHERE IS THE DEFENSE this is pitiful!!!

How is one game against the Knicks more important in judging our current success, than a 4 game road trip we just had? You can't just ignore that.

Don't you know? Being able to keep negativity flowing is all that matters. Win or lose.

Wait a minute here. There are so many posters who want to ignroe every Celtics bad effort and only focus on the good. This team was great in one game on the trip, good in a second, and mediocre in two others. And tonight they are struggling against one of the worst teams in the NBA. That is not championship caliber.

But when people who expected a 0-4 road trip say that nothing has changed after we went 3-1 just because we only lead by 1 point, that is not an objective statement.

The last couple offensive trips with chances to ice the game were terrible.  Rondo didn't penetrate and Ray couldn't get a look for some strange reason.

The C's managed to hang on but definitely not the performance that was expected.  The C's gave up the second highest FG percentage against them for this season.  And it's not like the Knicks were making crazy shots --- most of them were wide open looks.

Scraping out a home win against a terrible team after blowing a sizable lead.

Unfortunately nothing much has changed...

Also, the Knicks only scored 15 points in the 4th quarter, so we did play some good defense.

Celtics win!

Tougher than expected and no D at all... but ironically we won the game on a Ray Allen block. Ugh? Sometimes it's useless trying to understand some games scenarios... we got the win, that's all that matters.

It was nice to see Eddie getting a standing ovation and greeted by his teammates, even at the end of the game. Very emotional scene, kind of beautiful and sad at the same time.

Nate did have a poor shooting night but I really liked what I saw from him in this game. A lot of energy and speed, good shots offensively for the most part, and OK defense. In comparison to the other Celtics he looked like Shane Battier out there!

This is still not the "signature win in Boston" I've been expecting for months but I think it will come thursday against the Cavs, the Celtics show up against good teams.

TP's to everybody.

One way to look at it-----he recorded something in his statline which is something Scal rarely does.

Showed some energy based on what little I caught of the 3rd and 4th quarters.

But... it was interesting to be on the receiving end of Eddie House.  Though he didn't hit his shots, his presence on the court is significant especially in games like this.  He made me nervous.  Ultimately, Nate will be more valuable (my guess), but Eddie is a fearsome shooter.  The last 2 he threw up I thought were going in.

Seriously, House is scary when he's on the other side. But I agree that Nate will be more valuable. Even without knowing the offense, the second unit looked much smoother. Now we can have drives, drive and dishes, and alley-oop passes available to the second unit.

My thought was go to whoever Eddie was guarding.  I did kind of think that last shot was going in, but, Eddie just hasn't shot very well all year.  Personally I think his game is declining and the C's made a wise move dealing him, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he did a terrific job here for 2 seasons and helped win a title.

Unfortunately nothing much has changed...

i understand your thinking here - it is hard to watch this team struggle the way they do sometimes.

but the road trip was very encouraging and the team opened with a lot more hop tonite than they had before the break .............. and KG is slowly looking better. it's not a smooth upward improvement, more two steps up and one back, but that's the reality of coming back from most significant injuries.

one thing to remember about tonite vs knicks - these home date returns after long road trips are notorius trap games for all teams and remember, we played without our leading scorer.

very happy to get this win - a loss would have taken some shine off the promising road trip.

the 06/07 squad was a losing team - we all loved that team no matter what, but they weren't winning anything... If a player is really NBA caliber, he should be able to crack the rotation on a crappy team with relative ease, there's not much competition for your spot. Walker (and Giddens) both had the "misfortune" on being part of a veteran, championship roster.

Yea, its a bummer that Doc doesn't trust the younger players more. But there's a lot of emphasis home court in the playoffs and wins have been far more important in from 07-now than they were during the 2006 season. Do you really think the Knicks front office cares if they make the playoffs this season? They've flushed their entire franchise for this summer, and are playing for next season. If you're really a talent worthy of the NBA, you SHOULD be able to be able to get a spot as a role player in that system.

But a role player for a contender and a role player for a team that's tanking are far different things.

Wasn't able to follow the game, but thankful for the win..Marquis Daniels played well in Paul's absence, too, which is great.

I'll take this win..without Pierce..against a revamped Knicks team.

Nice pic on the CelticsBlog page with Eddie House. Take care, man.

Welcome to Nate Rob...he evidently didn't shoot well? Butterflies in stomach? Needed all four of his points, so all is good.

One day soon we'll see the home blowout, for a change. And it will be a good one against a great team....

Four out of Five for our Celtics! Get your rest, Paul we'll see you back next week.

I just saw the game and I didn't like what I saw all game long. The Knicks, THE KNICKS, were getting anything they wanted.
Mike was telling all game long how bad their D was, and at that point it was 96 all in the 3rd qtr so we didn't do a great job either Mike.
This wasn't a game, it was a 40 min shooting contest and 8 min 5on5 game.
I'm really interested to see how we play the the next 22 games and 15 of them at home.

Glad to see Bill Walker play solid with his minutes.  There is NO REASON why he couldn 't have done that for the Celtics. Absolutely none, way to give a guy a chance Doc.  And dont give me excuses people. I ve seen way too much TA, & Scal this way; we know what they are;  i bet $$$$ once walker figures out how to stop fouling , he'll have a better career than both those 2

Honestly, if he couldn't get any minutes in NY then I wouldn't see him having much a career. The fact that he's getting some minutes on a Knicks team that is playing for next season is not necessarily a reflection that the C's were holding him back.

But if he played on our 2006 team, everyone around here would be saying he had a future. It's a double standard.

the 06/07 squad was a losing team - we all loved that team no matter what, but they weren't winning anything... If a player is really NBA caliber, he should be able to crack the rotation on a crappy team with relative ease, there's not much competition for your spot. Walker (and Giddens) both had the "misfortune" on being part of a veteran, championship roster.

I'm not saying that Walker, Giddens or anyone else is going to be a superstar, but the logic that playing a rookie or younger player will cost this team victories is terribly flawed. If integrating a player to play five or 10 minutes a game will cost this team victories, then it's not a very good team. The more a player plays, the more they'll develop. If you sit them on the bench, and then ask them to come in and play, they're going to be incredibly rusty and out of place.

I don't think anybody has said certain players should be starting or getting starter minutes, but to give guys spot minutes here or there is not going to result in losses.

But, the reality is we won't have to have this conversation again until next season when whatever rookies we have are on the bench and people are wondering why they're not playing.

I think you completely miss my point - its not risking the win, so much as different teams have different goals so that player needs to exhibit different qualities to earn PT.
But its easy to say that Walker has potential because we see him dunk a few times in games every once in a blue moon... The coaching staff who saw him everyday in practice clearly don't know anything about him.

Okay, gotcha now. But then there has to be better communication between scouts, Danny, and Doc. No? I mean why draft guys who sit on the bench. Trade the picks for future picks.

I'm not convinced that just because seeing someone in practice makes their knowledge unquestionable. And like I said, I'm not suggesting that either Giddens or Walker will be a superstar or even a serviceable player. It's just frustrating to draft players and then get rid of them without seeing much play on the court. I can't fault a player for being timid or rusty on the court when they're sitting for a few months.

Q_FBE - FBE stands for Forensic Basketball Evaluation

The game appeared to be a typical Trap Home Game coming off a successful West Coast Trip where we are paired with a Weak Traditional Rival (Knicks) and just before a major showdown with Cleveland. Worse yet was the team we just traded with.

Also given our home anxieties all season and the fact that Paul Pierce was sat down, this had the makings of being a Frustrated Basketball Engineers special. We have had far too many of those this season.

I sat this one out due to errands and getting ready to move cross country to a city where NBA games used to be played up until 2 seasons ago.

The Boston Celtics got engaged in a shootout for about three quarters of the game and then got control in the 4th quarter imposing their successful defensive style on the Knicks and escaped with an unconvincing 4 point win. But these are the kind of wins needed this time of year as we try to maintain at least a third seed and keep hope alive to improve our playoff spot. Boston's record, I believe will be 56 and 26 which won't be good enough to catch Cleveland but maybe enough for a two seed.

Then we have to wait for the outcome of the Atlanta - Orlando Division race to see who the second round opponent will most likely be. Atlanta is an absolute hideous matchup nightmare for us. THAT HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED REPEATED THIS YEAR. Maybe that is why Nate Robinson is on the Celtics because he single handedly beat the Hawks with something like 40 SECOND HALF POINTS while coming out of Datoni's Doghouse.

typical rigged game. team who gets all the calls in the 4th almost always wins. cavs getting away with illegal defense and we're getting called for bogus touch fouls.
