Post by: jamie9248922 on February 04, 2010, 11:03:45 PM
Toine and Marcus Fizer both signed with my local team here in Puerto Rico, the Guaynabo Mets, Toines was signed for the season, but only has one moth guaranteed as the team wants to see if he is in condition to pla as he say he is. He is expected to report in 2 weeks. The PR league has become a paradise for NBA has beens latley...Toine, Fizer, Marcus Williams, Bonzi Wells, Danilo Pinnock all signed with team here over the past 2 seasons. Hopfully Toine does well, I want a championship! LOL I will update this as the season goes along

That is why they only guaranteed a month if his contract. Doubts with retired players arose when Bonzi Wells reported completley out of shape for another team,Capitanes de Arecibo. Now Bonzi is in shape and playing well.

Yeah, hopefully he can get back on track. He has obviously had some rough times as of late. If he can get back to playing bball consistently and make a little money in the process, it may help him work out some of his problems.

LOL.. Plenty of Casinos down here..

I'm excited, even tough 'Toine will play with a rival of my team (Bayamón Vaqueros) I will be there whenever he debuts. He was my favorite C for a longtime, even with his antics.

I really hope I can meet him and shake his hand.

I'll post some pics if I get the chance to take one with him.

I could not allow an Antoine Walker thread without someone mentioning that we BRING BACK TOINE! Although I am not serious... or am I?

Apparently Antoine Walker needs the cash pretty badly -- after not landing an NBA gig he has taken a physical and signed to play with Guaynabo in Puerto Rico. Former Bull (and Buck and Hornet) Marcus Fizer will join him.

Walker has been out of the game for more than a year (remember his season in Minnesota in 2008? Don't worry, nobody does).  Still he hoped to find an NBA gig but not even the Wizards have been willing to pick him up. Come to think of it, he may not have been the best fit for that locker room right now -- remember he was arrested last year for writing $1 million in bad checks to Vegas casinos.

Walker was a three-time All Star who probably still has enough game to make a difference in the Puerto Rico league. (Honestly, I've never seen a Puerto Rican basketball game, outside their national team beating the USA. And I've tried hard to repress that memory.)

I guess this is where this article belongs. I was wondering about Antione Walker after being among the 30 million or so of the unemployed. I'm gonna book my Puerto Rico holiday just to follow Antione around. Call me a Loser!

Seriously, knowing there's a PR basketball league just gives one more reason to book a sunny vacation, IMHO.  I never suspected it. Is there a team in Fajardo?

Right...'cause writing bad checks is the same thing as bringing loaded guns to public venues.  Is probasketballtalk for real???  ::) ::) ::)

Plus, Toine was HELD AT GUNPOINT TWICE in his career(first with Mercer, when he got robbed; the next time when he was tied up in his home)  You think he would've tolerated that s--t???  >:(

Antoine Walker was rumored to be in talks with some of Chinese teams but he opted to sign in Puerto Rico. The 34-year-old forward played in the NBA since 1996. He had stints with the Boston Celtics, Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat. Antoine Walker participated in the NBA All Star Game three times. He was also the NCAA champion with Kentucky back in 1996.

So, unlike Marbury, Toine preferred Puerto Rico, its beaches, and hot women.    Smart Choice, Antoine.   ;D

So I went to Toine's debut tonight. Looked good in the paint still has enough skills to play in there plus he was probably playing the worst front line in the PR Basketball league. He had 17 points, badly missed some threes (SHOCKER!), he looks decent, but it will probably take him 5-7 games to get into playing shape. Marcus Fizer had 14 and 8 boards and sunk 2 FTs with 7 seconds to win the game. Guaynabo is now 1-0. Ill keep giving updates as the season progresses if Toine lasts the whole season. Only has one month guaranteed on his contract so the team was protected in case he was out of shape or simply couldnt play anymore. About 3,500 people showed up, pretty good considering Guaynabo is not a marquee franchise and they were playing a bad team.

The local paper interviewed Walker today. He said the league was 10 times better than he expected, but that he hopes to get back into playing shape with his goal being getting back to the NBA. He actuallly guaranteed he would be back. Also, his salary is confirmed $ 7,000 a week. If he stays the whole year and the playoffs he should make about $ 1000,000.

Just for fun, I went to the team's website
link: http://www.bsnpr.com/equipos/index.asp?e=14&serie=1&anio=2010

Antoine's position is "Delantero" which GOOGLE TRANSLATE translates as "striker". For reference, the other positions (escolta, armador, centro and alero) translated as "escort," "owner," "center," and ... alero?

Spanish speaking friends, is that a good translation? And if so, what the heck is a "striker"? I mean, we're talking about power forward here right? Centro=center, delantro=power forward, armador=small forward or swingman, esolta=2 gaurd, alero=point gaurd??? Am I right?

Or am I lost in translation? ;D

striker is the man that scores the gols in soccer but the real word is foward just like english

escolta i think this is tghe other guard but yes the translation is escort

armador  this is the pg the ones who arma or structure or elaborate.

centro   center

alero   the best translation for alero is wingman
wings= alas

Please keep the updates coming. What is the size of the frontlines in this league? Are the teams generally pretty athletic? Its encouraging on paper to see him getting that many rebounds. Yes I have a soft spot for antoine and wish him the best even if its non prestigious puerto rican league. I for one would prefer that job to anyone I have ever held.

The team he played today had a 7 footer and 2 6 8 guys as their front line. Teams are very athletic at guard and wing, but quality big men are lacking they are usually guys who couldn't make it in the NBA. The real good big men will arrive in about a month when they are done with other leagues in Europe and Asia. The playoffs are much more competitive. Ill keep everyone informed, maybe Danny gives him a contract?

Toine Watch Game # 3: 20 mins 6 PTS 3-12 FG (0-3 3P) 13 Rebs (6 OFF) 2 AST
Totals (3 games) - 12 PPG 11.3 RPG 2 APG 1 BPG 42% Field Goals 14% from 3.

Guaynabo lost in a blowout. They are now 2-1. Antoine has now been with the team for a month which means the teams decides today whether to pick up his contract for the rest of the year or cut him, same with Marcus Fizer. I think Toine is safe, but Fizer will be cut. I will post it as soon as I get the info.

As I had previously stated tonight was the last game where Antoine's contract was guaranteed, their were rumors that Guaynabo was trying to negotiate to turn the contract into one where it gets renewed on a week by week basis instead of picking it up for the rest of the year. Marcus Fizer was also on the chopping block. This happens because each team only gets 2 non Puerto Rican players (rule is lax grandchildren of Puerto Ricans coun)and the teams expect these two players to put up big numbers. Toine and Fizer obviously responded. Fizer had 19 points 9 REBS and 7 ASTS.  Guaynabo won 92-86 and is now 3-1. On the defensive end Toine wasn't as good (who knew) the guy he was guarding had 31/11.

Antoine watch Game # 4: 20 PTS and 12 REBS

Guaynabo won again tonight and are now 4-1. Antoine played 31 minutes. Marcus Fizer (who I use as comparison) had 31 and 6.

There are only three sure things in this life:

1. Death

2. Taxes

3. 'Toine threads

Guess it says something for what "die-hard fan" means in Boston. I sincerely wish the best for the big guy ... he needs something positive in his life, and this could turn things around for him. Just please, no more "Bring 'Toine back to Boston" threads! (Folds hands, says a quick prayer). ;)

The Mets finished 7-23 last season. They signed Walker hoping he could lead them to a championship.

So far, not so good. Walker is averaging 13 points per contest and leads the team with 10.6 rebounds. But Guaynabo expected more out of one of the league's highest-paid players.

Garcia expects Walker will be motivated to play better knowing that being released by Guaynabo could signal that his playing days are effectively over. Like Walker's creditors, the Mets can only hope he can recapture some of what he's lost.

So averaging a FREAKIN' DOUBLE-DOUBLE ISN'T ENOUGH?  What about your OTHER Crappy Players, Garcia??   >:( >:( >:(

What about Marcus Fizer??

I thought Basketball was a T-E-A-M GAME?  NOT A "ME" GAME....

From the stats that I just read from that statement, Antoine *IS* doing his job to help your team.    Maybe you should put the pressure on your OTHER PLAYERS instead of throwing one of your more effective ones(Toine) under the bus, El Stupido.   >:(

One more thing, Toine can block some shots, pass the rock, and steal the ball here and there....He's averaging 14 Pts, 10 Boards, 2 Assists, while shooting at just under 50% from the field in 2pt territory(48%) and a bit over 30%(32%, actually) in 3pt territory. And that's not good enough for you??   By the way, he's also had SIX BLOCKS AND SIX STEALS these past 6 games, too.  What more do you want, Garcia?

You're expecting him to be MJ, not Antoine!!!!  SUFICIENTE!!!!

Your Team is 5-1 now with Toine.   Your team won just 7...count'em..SEVEN ****' GAMES LAST YEAR!!  If I were you, I wouldn't be so picky regarding your team's BEST(yes...BEST!) Player.  ::)

If you want the Mets to win a championship, it's going to take more than ONLY Antoine....  8)

Puerto Rican basketball league is kind of hard to understand. Obviously it is nothing like the NBA. Every team is only allowed 2 players that are not Puerto Rican, but these rules are very lax as grandchildren of Puerto Rican aren't considered foreigners. These franchises, which sometimes struggle to stay out of the red usually pay these foreigners very well, usually big men because PR produces tons of great guards and wings. Toine and Fizer are probably making 25-30% of the team's budget and they are expected to produce accordingly. To be fair Toine wasn't near shape when he started, but is slowly gaining it as he plays, as is evidenced by the fact that 2 out of his last 3 games have been 20/10 games. Guaynabo is in first with a 5-1 record, but things will be getting much harder as the best players in the league are all in Europe finishing seasons over there. The lvel of play goes up a lot as the season progresses and Toine must keep his level high. Guaynabo's owner has a ton of money and he wants to win this year, if he thinks he can go out and find a better player he won't blink in cutting Toine. As a comparison here are some of the other top foreign players stats:

Terrence Shannon: 16 PPG 8RPG
Robert "Tractor" Traylor: 12.6 PPG 12 RPG
Monty Wilson: 11 PPG 7 RPG
Leroy Hickerson: 20 PPG 9.7 RPG
Devin Green: 17.6 PPG 6.2 RPG 4 APG
Lee Nailon: 20.6 PPG  7.8 RPG
Walker Russel: 11 PPG 3.2 RPG 6 APG
Marquis Gainous: 18.5 PPG 8.3 RPG
Chris Daniels: 14.5 PPG 7.5 RPG
James Mays: 16.4 PPG 7.6 RPG
John Millsap (Paul's brother): 17 PPG 9 RPG
Dan Langhi: 14.5 PPG 14 RPG

There is his competition...A lot of these guys will be cut in favor of others who come in once the European season is over.

jamie, read my post again.  I modified it.  sorry.  :)

I added a few things.

I understand what you're saying but for the Head Coach to throw Antoine under the bus like that is so [dang] unprofessional, it's not even funny.  :(

By the way, the things I added in my post?  It looks like they don't keep Stats for Blocked Shots and Steals which is interesting since both those two represent DEFENSE.   Toine has 6 Blocks and 6 steals in the first six games.

Something else I pointed out is the team's record last year.... Only 7 Victories....And with Toine here?  They're just two away from matching that after just six games.  I have no doubt they'll better that mark and then some.  And that's what aggravates me when the Coach nitpicks Antoine's contributions like this.  He's acting like he's Phil Jackson and won a Championship recently...Perdon, Senor Garcia?  Attencion!!  YOUR TEAM WON JUST 7 GAMES LAST YEAR!!  geez....

I agree...they might be asking a little too much from Toine, but he is DEFINITELY playing better, and Guaynabo is in first at 5-1. Also, this is a completley different franchise in Guaynabo from last year. Last year Guaynabo was the Conquistadores and that league folded, this year they are the Mets, they moved from Caguas to Guaynabo. This happens a lot in PR, lots of movement between towns from year to year. Guaynabo has the best starting 5 in the league and are difinitley one of the top 4 teams....We will see! Hope Toine can lead this team far. We havent had a good team in Guaynabo for a while...This offseason they aquired Fizer/Toine Figueroa and Guzman 2 ex MVPS and Escalera who is a scoring machine...Remind me a lot of the CVeltics 2 years ago...they need their bench to come up huge cause they had no money left over to spend on it

Ahh...Okay.   I thought they released him or something.  My gut feeling is if both continue to play well, they will stay for the remainder of the season.  Every Sport is a results-oriented business and right now, the Results of the Mets are very VERY Good and have to make the Mets Owner(Not Jeff Wilpon, thank god...lol) very happy.

Not a good night for Toine in Game 7 of his comeback :

10 Points on 3/10 shooting (1/3 from 'Cause-there-are-no-fours Land)

He went to the line 3 Times and made half his Free Throws(3-6); Gee, where have we seen THIS before?    ::)

8 Boards (2 offensive)

2 Assists

1 Block  (So make that 7 Blocks and 6 Steals in 7 Games for the *Unofficial* Stat list of mine)

3 Turnovers

3 PFs (And I think, according to the boxscore, he had 3 Offensive Fouls or FO 'cause I don't believe a player can "Foul Out" 3 times...lol)

One thing I've noticed is that Garcia does not trust his bench AT ALL.  And That is a shame 'cause he's going to burn out his starting 5.

He's still rebounding well but let's be honest.  The only reason why the Mets beat those guys is that they STUNK LESS than the other team.   But at least we can say that an Ugly Win is much better than an Ugly loss, right Jamie?

I have to wonder, though...You think that Toine would still be there if the Team got off to a slow start and was hovering around .500 instead of being towards the top of the Conference/Division(?) right now at 6-2??   I think the Owner will hold off of bringing down the AX on Walker's head so long as the Team is winning games.

Hopefully, Toine can rebound(play better, I mean...since he has been rebounding the ball well) and have a better showing in the Next game but more importantly....THE METS WIN, period.

I noticed that Tractor Traylor was playing....He had just 5 points on just 4 Shot Attempts the ENTIRE GAME and I wonder if Toine was matched-up against him and focused a bit more on DEFENDING him and denying him the Ball in the post.....

Antoine Walker is a free agent again, released in Puerto Rico
Thu Apr 01,2010 10:27 AM ET By Kurt Helin

From the signs it may be time to give up professional basketball life....

Antoine Walker has been cut by his team in the Puerto Rican league, as Sham Sports reports.

Walker signed with the Puerto Rican team Mets de Guaynabo a few months ago, doing so simultaneously with former Chicago Bulls forward Marcus Fizer. Fizer has played in Puerto Rico twice before, so this is not new for him, but it was Antoine's first time. And like most first times, it ended disastrously and prematurely.

In 8 games for the team, with only 1 start, Walker averaged 28.8 minutes, 12.4 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. Those are not bad numbers, but Antoine shot only 41% from the field, 22% from 3 and 52% from the foul line, his 99 total points coming on 94 total field goal attempts. More importantly, those numbers are relative to expectation, and by being the biggest name (and most expensive player) in the whole of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional, expectations for Walker were exceedingly high.

The real losers here are the casinos where Walker owes money. And his agent that is still owed fees. And the others owed money we don't know about. That's becoming quite a long list

http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/04/antoine-walker-is-a-free-agent-again-released-in-puerto-rico.php

>>> This is bad.  I know it's April Fool's day but this is NOT a joke, unfortunately. So now what is Toine going to do?    If he still has those "cars" he owns, it's time to sell them.  And also sell anything else he has 'cause I agree with the Above writer.  It's time to call it a Career.....   I am just praying that he finds a way to repay what he owes...but at the same time, though, if he is unable to repay what he owes at the deadline given, what's going to happen?   Is he going to serve jail/prison time?  How's THAT going to recoup the money owed by his creditors?

But I digress...I hope Jail-time does not have to come into this.     :(

From the signs it may be time to give up professional basketball life....

Antoine Walker has been cut by his team in the Puerto Rican league, as Sham Sports reports.

Wow, that's not good news for Toine. What's the guy to do now? If he can't maintain a gig in Puerto Rico, I'm not sure he'd be able to anywhere else.
