Title: Drawing for the uninspired!
Post by: Kiorrik on January 04, 2010, 07:57:53 PM
This post is now irrelevant, since our blog was laid to rest.

Let's use this topic to share any drawings/art any of us did/do.

Heya people!

Short version: I has made blog for people that fail @ drawing because they don't know what the heck to draw and don't want to be forced to draw something but do want to draw and and and... well yes. That about sums it up in a non-punctuated line.

So me and a basketball teammate of mine used to draw a bit every now and then. Lately, however, we've been drawing diddly-squat, because most of the time, you just sit down, with a pencil in your hand, and stare at a blank piece of paper. Waiting. But it never comes :)

So we decided to make a blog, and put up our drawings there. We discussed this stuff over Twitter, and some people showed interest. Right now, I've got several people (some friends from real life, the basketball team mate, a friend from a long long time ago, etc) that joined in on the blog.

What we do is fairly simple:

We set a topic every month, and if you like the topic, if you have time to draw, really only if you feel like it, you have the option of sending me a drawing and I'll put it up somewhere around the time of the deadline.

The thought is to get people to create again, mainly if you lack inspiration or reasons to draw.

You don't have to be able to draw really well, as long as you have fun while drawing. The quality of the work can be anything from "scribbled on a napkin" to "digital painting" and it doesn't matter whether it took you the full month and 40 hours a week, or just half an hour, as long as you created it after the start date.

Now, the reason I posted it here should be quite apparent: you're welcome to join :)

Drop a post in this topic if you want to join and I'll email the details :)

I'm pretty satisfied :] Good entries with lots of different styles.

Hahahaha :D

Well, you're welcome to join this one, if you *like* to draw. Talent isn't a prerequisite.

Alright, since you guys are here anyway; tell me what ya think of how it turned out. Is it something you could look at more often? Does it interest you even though you don't draw?

And don't hold back, brutally honest replies are just fine ;)

I can't draw, and have no desire to draw, but the pics on the website looked pretty cool.  Looks like it could be pretty cool once it gets up and running and fills out a little bit more, but so far I liked what I saw.

And it kind of reminded me of threadless.com, where people just submit random drawings and they get voted on and put on t-shirts.

Thanks for the answer. Hm. I know threadless :] Good site, true.

Thanksio.

Looks promising.  Just get more stuff up on there and once you build up a nice archive I think people could spend quite a while on there.

Just a little ocean cottage I always liked from "Summer Of '42" ... thought I'd sketch it (just No.2 pencil).

Another movie-inspired sketch, this one of the ancient, fossilized spacecraft from the first "Alien" movie ...

... that scene always fascinated me.

This I drew from what I think was a woodblock print I saw online of my hero, Walt Whitman ...

.. again, just No. 2 pencil.

You've got some serious talent Bahku, I especially like the cottage.

Sketching is probably one of the hardest things I've EVER tried to do.  That's one skill I don't think I could ever improve on, no matter how hard I practiced.

Many thanks to you and TB for the much-too-kind comments, Bud ... my Sis and Mom are the true artists in my family, (just amazing), but a little rubbed off, I guess, enough that it has brought me some enjoyment, at least. My brother and I went the more musical and medical routes ... there's just too little time for everything, unfortunately. ;)

I sketched this during slow time yesterday, for my Bro ACF and his son's birthday. I wanted to do a portrait, but I'm just horrible with faces, and I loved the expression/symbolism in the hands, (father with the open hand, representing unconditional love/acceptance, and the child's hand grasping for guidance and affection). I wanted to make some connection to the Celtics, hence the shamrocks on Elias' shirt. (I sketch in a sketchbook, that's why there are shawdows when I scan the drawing).

Ditto! Is it just me or are hands one of the hardest things to draw? I find it difficult to make them life-like. You did a wonderful job. My hands always look cartoonish but then again, I am not that good at drawing anyway.

Agree, hands can be really hard. Great job on the hands bahku, and nice mixing in the Celtic theme.

Thanks to both y'all ... keep up the great work, SH ... you've got some major talent there.

I'm just a hack, cuz most of my free time goes to music, and I've just never been able to give art the time I wish I could.

My Sis and Mom are well-known artists here in Maine, so I picked up a little bit over the years.

Keep at it, and keep posting ... I'd like to see more CB-ers posting their stuff as well.

Our own Kiorrik, (mod who started this thread), is extremely talented as well.

Acrylic painting of a design by Michael Weinstein I found on the internet. Painting defiantly isn't my thing, but still can be pretty entertaining.

When you go to forum home... click the section you want to make a new topic in (like; Celtic Talk, Around the League)... look at the top right and it says "new topic" (after Mark Read and Notify... right of where it has the page numbers)... click it and there you go! ;)

Thanks! I'd say it's both. It's certainly a hobby of mine, but they also are for sale if someone was interested. I have two older Celtics related paintings to be displayed in an art gallery in my hometown and hopefully more too come and just recently I helped illustrate a cover to a book.

So, both? haha

That's pretty cool. I'd be interested if we owned a house. I'll come back to you in a couple of years ;)

I had a painting commissioned by a friend I met on the internet before. Great success, really loved the process and the result.

So I guess this is to anyone that's considering ScottHow's paintings: do buy.

It's great to own something you know is unique, and it's a great way to help out beginning artists!

Basically, your pictures seem square-ish. Perhaps try something more horizontal, landscape, whatever you want to call it? :) So like differnt shapes.

It's all good. I know the rest remains silent, but I know people are all equally impressed.

If I'm wrong about that, they can speak up about ;) harhar

Seriously though, keep sharing 'cuz it inspires. I'm feeling the itch to draw again ;) Even gave a 5 minute go at a KG sketch, but I'm really bad at drawing realistic things, and don't really care to improve that. I'm very close to re-doing an old piece though, one that I do once every x years, to see if I've improved while not doing any drawing haha :D

Ya, I wasn't meaning as responses go, but more to the fact that no one else draws, paints or whatever. Although I do understand its scary to put stuff out there, so maybe there are others.

I did the drawing once every few years thing. It's definitely cool to see how you've progressed through time.

Lovin' this, (and the one that follows) ... charcoal?

This should be renamed the "Scott Howe Art Thread" ... nice stuff, SH, and I can see you progressing quickly.

Both my Mom and Sis are prominent artists, so I've been around it all my life.

Really wish I had more time to devote to it myself, (or to creative writing), cuz I love it, but music is my true love, and at my age I've got to prioritize. ;)

Keep it up, my man ... great work!

Injured my elbow 8 years ago from a construction job. If I used it a lot it would swell up and become difficult to bend. Then the swelling would go away with some ice and some ibuprofen.

This year it started hurting a lot more so i decided to see what's up with my elbow. A MRI later I'm being sent to the oncology wing in mass general as it was a tumor that might of changed chemically into cancer. Pretty scary stuff.

They believe it to be a tumor of blood vessels (not cancer) so i had it removed and I find out for sure on Thursday.

Wow. I guess that's considered a mild success-story then, as opposed to the story of how you had to get surgery on a painful arm.

Good job on the pencils btw :]

Hope you guys, like it.
Any suggestions or criticism will be welcomed.
I've started a couple more drawings that I will post once I finish them.

Thanks
Nice, Tim, (TP) ... faces are a nightmare for me, (and hands) ... that's why I usually cop out with scenes or objects.

Gotta love a well-timed lip bite. ;)

Wish I could devote more to it, but music was this grasshopper's true path, (art my Mom's and Sister's ... they are amazing, though they're musical as well).

Nice, Scott ... love 'em both.

I now realize why I always lean toward number-two pencil: you can correct your mistakes, haha ... with paint or markers, etc., once it's down, it's down, (although watercolors are a little flexible).

Gotta love erasers when you're a hack like me.

Keep up the great work, S ... I've sent a couple of friends to your site, hope that's OK. :)

As of right now I'm only using sketchbook express for digital drawing. Any suggestions for software?

Hard one. Most artists I know use Photoshop exclusively, especially since it became more affordable. $2000 in one go was never an option for me, but since they've gone to a more affordable $20 per month, I've been very happy to deliver part of my pay-cheque to the Adobe office every month. (I actually pay 50 a month to get all their programs, since I use more than just Photoshop).

But that's coming from someone who's been using the program for more than a decade for everything from photo editing to webdesign to concept art and texture maps.

So, honestly, I would refer to this message board (http://forums.conceptart.org/forum.php), and more specifically, these subforums (http://forums.conceptart.org/forumdisplay.php?f=220).

ConceptArt.org hosts some of the premier artists in the digital world, and though they're a bit snobbish and elite every now and then, they're pretty dang smart and helpful enough if they notice you're keen to learn.

Made a td garden paint/basketball hoop out of popsicle sticks and wood, finished off with a Russell action figure. This was the result of the offseason, lol

Hey everyone,

I thought I'd make a few new pictures http://imgur.com/a/lkHGJ#0 (http://imgur.com/a/lkHGJ#0). I'll add more current Celtics soon if anyone is interested, otherwise I'll probably just keep them to myself. (I also have some mockups of the Big 3, but they're worse, can still post them though)

If you like, you could post some suggestions as well.

Thanks!
