Matchups to Watch
(http://www.nba.com/media/act_rajon_rondo.jpg)vs(http://www.nba.com/media/act_derrick_rose.jpg)
The Bulls #1 draft pick, Derrick Rose is starting at the point.  Rondo has outplayed quite a few veterans and now he gets the chance to matchup up against the Bulls' rookie of the year candidate.  Rose averaged 11.0 points,  4.00 rebounds and  9.0 assists per game in the preseason.  Rondo averaged  10.2 points,  4.10 rebounds, and  6.6 assists.  It will be a fun matchup to watch.

This is always a good matchup.    Luol Deng is one player who has been able to defend Paul Pierce very well.  Deng just got a nice big contract and Pierce is on a mission to repeat as champion.  This could get pretty intense.

The Bulls won their opening night game against the Bucks 108-95.  The Celtics also won their opening night game and so one or the other will be handed their first loss of the season in this game.

Last season, the Celtics swept the series from the Bulls 4-0 for the first time since the 1986-87 season.  In the 4 games last season, The Celtics averaged 105.3 points to only 87 for the Bulls.  The Bulls have added super rookie, Derrick Rose to a team that already was stocked with talented young players.  Whether they can find the chemistry necessary to get the most out of those players is yet to be seen.  They have a rookie coach in Vinnie Del Negro and the Bulls are hoping that he can keep the team from falling apart as they did last season.

X-Factor
Home court advantage.  The Celtics are tough at home and hopefully that will give them an edge in this game.

Nice game to watch, and on Halloween night!

I will always remember that win on a same night some years ago against MJ...we had Billups, Walker, Mercer, McCarty...

By the way, i think it's Garnett's 1000th game in the NBA :o

Thanks FLCeltsFan, I love those 2 logos/cufflinks.

For those downunder, I believe this game will be televised! Get excited! I am! I plan to watch this game over at a mate's place after my final exam of the year (and he's a Bulls fan, so it'd be interesting), just can't wait!

BTW, I agree with the Rondo/Rose matchup being a must-watch. As much as I like Rose, I hope Rondo teaches him a good lesson of taking care of the ball and making good decisions (prediction, Rose gets 5+ TOs in this game or close to 10 depending how many minutes he play).

Also, my mate said Rose is the best point guard at dunking in the league.(lets forget about Nate Robinson for now) Any thoughts on that??

I am also excited to see Rose play. This will be the first nba game I have seen himm play and it is just a bonus to him matched against Rondo.
Also excited to see Hinrich for the 1st time this year,I personally think he is going to have a huge year.

Thanks for the game thread FLCeltsFans. As usual, great work.

I think this can be a fairly easy win for the C's if the team does a couple of things:

- Rondo has to slow down Rose's dribble penetrations, we can't rely on the help-defense sinking too deep because the kid is really good kicking out the ball and their shooters can get hot. edit: oh, and Rose struggles mightily with picks, he's really, really bad, make him run a lot on the defensive end and he'll get lost.

- we must defend the transitions well.

If we do this, they'll need a miracle to win. The Bucks didn't do either, they were horrible in their own fastbreaks and first passes, turning over the ball at an insane rate, were in foul trouble since very early, especially their bigs, and they still made it a competitive game almost to the end.

Great argument with the ESPN boys with their top PFs.  Jackson is right on this one.  KG has a ring and a legacy, Amare has neither one, no matter how great he might be.

Tyrus Thomas is the definition of what a good couple of weeks in March can do for you when you're in college.  He is just not a good pro yet, and won't be for awhile.  His Tournament with LSU raised his stock way higher than it should've been.

Interesting hesitation there talking about Pierce and the HOF.  He does guarantee that he's in the rafters though.  If he's in the rafters in the Garden then he should be in Springfield.

If Scal is getting minutes tonight than Pruitt should too.  I think Scal should be in a suit like Marbury was tonight, but if he's dressing he should at least be 12 out of 12 on the depth chart.

Are the celtics team so stacked right now to have giddens and walker look like they are practice pilons??

I don't know if its docs idea but these rookies should get some playing time. (for example tonight they could have)

I'm personally disappointed today in tony allen and pruitts play. Pruitt unlike some pre season game is strolling and taking it easy out there. That is ridicoulous

what a great game from the Cs.  the announcers were gushing all over themselves about garnett and pierce being into it even though they were on the bench.  since when did they drink they kool-aid?

observations:
(1) Leon Powe is the best player off the bench.**
(2) Tony Allen isn't Posey, but he should fill the Posey shoes pretty well, at much less the cost.  I like what I see from him.
(3) I wouldn't be surprised to see Gabe Pruitt get more PT.

** and the Cs are going to have to pay if they want to keep him next season (Maxiel just got $5M per year -- probably going rate for Powe at this point)

Well, after that game I was pretty happy. Looks like ESPN is starting to get on the green bandwagon, talking about how much heart they put into blowout games like these.

I really like Derrick Rose from what I've seen. He didn't get any assists but when your team is shooting so atrociously it isn't really a surprise. I was very impressed with him.

That said, I thought Rondo did a very nice job covering him. He did some nice things, looked in total control handling the ball and the offense and used his quickness nicely to get some easy layups while the Chicago D was snoozing.

I didn't like anything else Chicago did (except Aaron Gray, thought he did some nice things), especially Nocioni. That temper tantrum which led to the tech foul was in no way the right way to respond to a foul he didn't agree with. Fouled out in spectacular fashion. Tyrus Thomas...eh. I liked him more as the game went on, but obviously very raw, but I liked his hustle at some points.

I thought Perk did a good job but got blocked around the rim a few times where he has the strength where he must go up hard.

Leon was huge tonight, he (and Perk too) really showed a much finer post game than I've seen from them last season; props to Clifford Ray.

I actually liked Tony today. He played hard for most of the game, got some steals, mainly stayed in front of his man and didn't force shots. I think he also solved the debate about whether he dishes when he drives as he had a number of wrap around passes to Leon and Baby especially which didn't really convert on the boxscore. His focus really seemed to go in the 4th quarter, where he took a lot more shots and stopped running in either offense or defense. That's forgivable though when up by 20 in my opinion (well, moreso than other times he's shown off his propensity to lose focus).

I hope nobody here was making the Scalabrine chant. It's an embarassment to everybody.

Did anybody else think Leon's flip shot that he banked in was actually purposeful? I've seen him do it a few times now. A final note, Leon is one of the people in the game where I'm confident that if he gets the ball he's going to either score/get to the line and make the right decision more often than not. Which is more than impressive for a bench player.

If Big Baby and POB continues to improve, I can see Ainge moving Powe in a sign and trade. He is the only trade chip the C's have, if Ainge wants to keep the Big 3 together.

(3) I wouldn't be surprised to see Gabe Pruitt get more PT.

** and the Cs are going to have to pay if they want to keep him next season (Maxiel just got $5M per year -- probably going rate for Powe at this point)

If Big Baby and POB continues to improve, I can see Ainge moving Powe in a sign and trade. He is the only trade chip the C's have, if Ainge wants to keep the Big 3 together.

That would be a travesty.  You can see Powe as our only chip, or our best bench player.  I want this kid on our team for the foreseeable future.  I want Baby traded for whatever we can get.  We can package him for Scal or Giddens or Walker, or something.

I see Powe in green, not in Hornets colors, not after we let go of Posey.  Letting go of James is enough, letting the two of them go would equal a struggle to get back to the Finals.

what a great game from the Cs.  the announcers were gushing all over themselves about garnett and pierce being into it even though they were on the bench.  since when did they drink they kool-aid?

Unfortunately, I agree with Chief on this.  I think Leon is one of the biggest realistic trade chips the Cs have.  Although, things will depend a lot on how the season goes this year.  EG: What would Ray Allen + [  ] bring back??

Didn't see the game but judging from the box score, it looks like Garnett and Perkins both had good games.

I just want another ring.  If we keep Ray and establish Leon as what he can be, I see that happening.  Ray's not going anywhere this year, and if he can improve over this playoff run then Leon can be what we need off the bench to be, and Ray can have a better playoff run than he had last year.

Very happy with our solid start to the season.

Great to see Rajon upping his assists.  Could easily be due to the ever increasing familiarisation with his team mates.

Leon just keeps on getting better.  His strength and his great hands make him a force underneath the basket.

A game of early separation and then maintaining the pressure until garbage time.

The starting five look very comfortable together.

I love winning, bring it on all day, every day.

Cheers

Aussie

why in the hell would we even think about trading leon powe??

come on guys, let's use our noggins here...leon powe doesn't have the kind of contract that you can move for a player equal (or above) his worth...are you going to add scalabrine?  please, this will probably be his last gig in the nba where he makes more than the league minimum.

if leon powe gets traded you can kiss # 18 goodbye, plain and simple.  :-\

Trade Powe?  Are you kidding?  Besides his talent on the court, he brings so much off it as well.  Nobody works harder or gives back as much.  He is such a humble dude and knows his roots.  That kind of presence in invaluable in the locker room.  There's a reason why everyone loves Leon and it goes beyond his skills on the court.  Combine that with the fact that you're not going to find much better talent in his price range and resigning him is a no-brainer.

It just dawned on me what last night's Bulls performance reminded me of:  An Isiah era Knicks team.  I really think they need to finish the "blowing up the Bulls" job.  There are two different regimes on that team at the same time and tehy have zero cohesiveness (or maybe it was just the Celts making them look that way).

It's early, but that team looks like a bunch of separate parts right now.

I rather they showcase Davis and trade him.  They just need to switch the matchups they use with Powe and Davis.

Personally I think giving Powe a similar deal to Maxiel would be fair for both sides.

As for last night, good to see KG and Ray bounce back. Heck all the starters look good. Plus everybody got a lot of rest.

No one said to trade Powe. Cman was talking about how well Powe is playing and that it is going to cost the C's a pretty penny to keep him around when his contract expires. And then I mentioned that I could see Danny making a sign and trade deal with Powe (when his contract expires), if Big Baby and POB continues to improve.  But only if Ainge wants to keep the big 3 together.

My two pennies on last night's game:

- I'm proud of Tony Allen because maybe, just maybe, he is starting to get it. Tony had a bad offensive night. He was getting whacked on every drive, clearly should have gone to the charity stripe 3 more times than he did, missed a bunch of shots but played consistent, aggressive, excellent defense. In game one in the first half when things weren't going Tony's way his defense suffered but got better when things started dropping in the second half. Tonight, except for that one offensive rebound he stole away and then dished to Powe for the slam, his offense wasn't good, but he came to play defense no matter what. It's only one game but if he can keep that up, he will be a huge bench contributor all year, whether his shots are falling or not.

- Was it just me or did Glen Davis have the most productive, least filled up box score ever last night. He seemed to be doing all the little things that the C's needed that don't show up in a box score. Screens, tipped passes, tipped rebounds, saving balls from going out, great defense. Very impressive as a just pure energy guy last night.

- The first 30 minutes of this game the Celtics defense was in late playoff form and impossible to penetrate or figure out for a team as young as the Bulls. It just frustrated the ever living hell out of them and you could see on Vinnie Del Negro's face he had no answer for it.

- Derrick Rose can definitely dribble baseline to baseline and drive and finish. But it sure appeared he couldn't do much of anything else and displayed zero, and I mean, zero passing skills. His defense was rather poor too. And it's not like he was taken to town or up against some wily old veteran. He blew right past Rondo on the length to lengths, that was impressive. But he showed little else against a kid who is in his own right, still learning the pro game.

- Pierce and KG were extremely efficient and I have seldom seen in my life two super-duper stars of their caliber being on the same team and having both just let the flow of the offense come to them for a whole game without forcing anything. Not one forced shot. Pretty amazing. If it happens a lot this year look for the type of box score we saw last night where 5 or 6 guys get into double figures in scoring of 15 points or so or more.

- Scal's the 10th man. Wow that says everything one needs to know about POB. Pruitt is the 11th man. Say hello to the NBDL for me rooks it looks like you'll be on a lot more bus rides than plane rides this year. Hope POB doesn't get blisters on his butt from sitting so much.

- I hope the complacency that set in in the end of the third quarter and kinda through the fourth isn't a sign of things to come when this team gets up big. Take them out guys. Keep up that defense and go for the jugular. I know you can do it I saw it in Game 6 vs LA last year.

Sounds like Rose has the right attitude and will improve his game.

Quote
Last night, he led the Bulls with 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting with four rebounds, but just one assist.

"I need to work on everything," Rose said. "All-around game. My mental approach to the game. Dribbling. Passing. Jump shot. Learning about my opponent. It's a lot of things . . .

# 1 needs to be passing. He does not look for his teammates in a half court set.

i agree with this statement 100%...when i saw this transaction and the accompanying figure the other day, this was my first thought.  the length of the deal and the monetary value are very fair.
