Matchups to Watch
(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/PierceBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/cleveland/LeBronCle2.jpg)
The matchup between Paul Pierce and LeBron James is always an entertaining one.  When they last met in the playoffs, it was Pierce coming out on top in a classic shootout.  LeBron will be looking to even the score.

(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/RondoBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/milwaukee/MWilliamsMil.jpg)
The Cavs improved over the off season by bringing in Mo Williams to man the point.  Throughout the playoffs, Rondo was able to take advantage of veteran point guards  and out play them and hopefully he will  be able to pick up where he left off.

X-Factor
(http://assets.sbnation.com/imported_assets/29392/102408shamrockjg10_medium.jpg)
The Celtics will be getting their rings and raising banner #17 to the ceiling before the game.   This could go either way.  It could serve as a distraction to the Celtics and motivation for LeBron who very much wants a ring himself.  Or, it can be motivation for the Celtics who knowing how it feels want another one.

I think the pre-game show starts half and hour before tip-off. I don't think they'll be showing the game on CSN, anyways, because TNT is airing the game.

Jesus, watching Paul Pierce right now is making it a little dusty in here.

Remember:
Quote
Turns out that Pierce is a basketball junkie. Watches all the playoff games once the Celtics get knocked out. Watches every NBA-related documentary on ESPN and Fox. Watches every old-school NBA game on ESPN Classic. Watches summer league games on ESPN2. Heck, he even coerced the Celtics into sending him game tapes of every Celtics game from the 2001 season, just so he could scout himself.

The guy simply loves basketball. Lives and breathes it. Better yet, unlike most of the guys in the league, he could pick Gus Williams out of a police lineup, he knows Andrew Toney had an unstoppable first step, he knows the Lakers wouldn't have won the '87 title without Mychal Thompson ... he's just a basketball fan who coincidentally happens to play basketball for a living. And he was sitting home last summer, night after night, watching all these games and documentaries, telling himself over and over again, "Some day, it's gonna be me ... some day it's gonna be me."

Good for him.

No, CSN still had their pre-game show with Tanguay and Marshall at 6:30 (and a post-game show scheduled for 10:30) ... it's just that they must have had technical difficulties (you could hear the audio but the video was nothing but a still image from a BoxFlex commercial).

I guess they're lucky they weren't scheduled to broadcast the game, or else the Boston sports scene would have had the NBA version of "Steve-Harvey Gate" (http://sports.aol.com/mlb/story/_a/tbs-problems-keep-first-part-of-alcs-off/n20081019013409990003)

My thoughts so far on the game:

-Powe is a beast I hope he continues on this path that started in the finals
-When playing the Cavs you need to attack Varejo, that guy is a tree all the way up to his hair.
-LeBron still hasn't gotten a consistent shot
-Tony Allen pass the ball

* Notice  Paul Pierce comes back in the game, but Doc takes TA out instead of giving Ray a breather.  Rays played the whole half so far.

Last year when Paul came back in he'd spell Ray, so they all got an equal breather.  Doc cant be happy with TA's minutes with the offense.

...I'd be psyched if we got a look at Bill Walker in the second half.

He does, which I didn't think was physically possible.

Only down 7, they'll step it up in the second half once they make some adjustments.

That play by Lebron was absurd, he's scary.

All in all, I'll take being down 7. We've missed too many bunnies. TA was a little out of control. Reffing is very pro Cav. Cavs got away with a lot of hacks and charges. Big Z and Sideshow Bob are both cheap hackers.

It seems  the game plan is to go at Wally.  Hence all of the shots for Tony Allen.  I like the idea just Tony isn't a post player.  He needs to take Wally off the dribble.

The Rooks are inactive, correct?  I saw Scal and POB in unis so it have to be the rooks and obviously The Alien not in uni.

I wish Pruit would get a chance to run the second unit instead of House.  House is better as the two and when his shot is off he doesn't help the offence. They need someone to creat for the second unit.

Aside for that they played well, just couldn't knock down the open looks.

Cavs have an extra 10 pts from the line and they're shooting it about 15-20% better than they normally do. We need to hit a 3 (0-9).

Pierce has looked great. Hopefully KG and Ray step it up in the 2nd half. Also love Perk's hustle and D.

They went after Wally with Powe in the game and he didnt look like a blackhole on offense.

It was amazing how during that small strecth our entire offense became ME first.  It spread.  Everyone caught and shot.  No ball movement.

not a big fan of the way Doc is closing out this game.  Pierce should have been out there for more of this 4th quarter.  If that meant he needed to be pulled sooner in the 3rd, then so be it.  But keeping him out until there's less than 6 min left is bogus.

Well 29 teams may be out to get us, but they won't catch us. Nice way to open the season.

TA may the only player where you see the good and bad version on the same play. Still he made a nice contribution off the bench.

quick game... nice moving feeling to it.

ray allen looked old but pierce still looked like mvp material.
after a full season, rondo still can't finish his favorite behind the back fake pass layup move.
powe is a beast.
garnett looks like where he was in the finals- a little lost.

Yup. Not a good idea at all.

As my buddy from Cleveland said during the game, "Yup, we'll let him take that shot all game...."

Love seeing the effort from TA and my man Powe (Cal product, like me  ;) ).  My only complaint: it wasn't enough of a blow out that we got to see Walker, Giddens, Pruitt and POB.

watched this one at the bar, so here's my post game thoughts

awesome raising ceremony. Defintly some dust around the bar area during pierce getting his ring heh.

would have loved to listen to his speech, to bad the production crew had reggie miller blabbing over it, and then, in the middle of it JACKED REGGIES MIC so that i couldn't hear pierce at all. way to know what people turned in for guys, it wasen't reggie waxing on about his career.

from the game: 1st half was fustrating, because outside of the captain, we couldn't throw a brick in the ocean. and the most fustrating part was that we were getting good looks, just missing them. Ring lag for sure hehe. the encoruging part was we could play that bad and stay in it.

2nd half, we got back to work. great team D, better (though clearly still off) contributions from ray ray and KG, and leon kept on keeping on.

Paul was paul :D

and, since i was a noted "TA is probley not going to help us much" guy, who has been intiruged by his preseason, for his first game, let me be the first to give him a

Yup. The positives definitely outweighed a couple of mistakes with the basketball.

Sloppy game, but the defensive definitely was elevated to championship level in the second half.

Urge all of you to check the box scores - too many minutes for Allen, especially, Garnett and Pierce. Still believe we need a reliable backup 5 and a perimeter shooter off the bench to repeat.

im nto sure, to be honest, that it would change how doc uses ray (i.e to much)

doc tends to treat ray ray like tim wakefield, he can go forever in doc's mind.

not that it seemed to hurt us last year, and ray is probley the most "in shape" celtic, barring mabey rajon.

My laptop crashed and I couldn't get to the site last night so my thoughts on what I saw last night:

- Pierce's loss of weight really improved his first step and he schooled LeBron many times or LeBron put on more muscle weight slowing him down forcing him to try to anticipate moves and look really bad a bunch of times. Maybe a little of both but probably a bit more of the former than the latter.

- Tony Allen is still Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He was awful in the first half being almost incapable of keeping up with Boobie Gibson and doing his best impersonation of Sam Cassell while almost shooting the team out of the game. Then in the second half he made those two rather ill advised drives to the basket that had good results and suddenly his defense returned and he was going baseline over LeBron.

- The announcers were playing up the Cavs defensive effort at halftime but what I saw was the Celtics missing a ton of open looks, especially Ray and KG. The Celtics got the shots they wanted out of the starters but just missed open looks.

- Except for Powe and Tony's second half, the bench was not good. Eddie was off and showed that he still has a lot of trouble with pressure. Watching Tony bring up the ball in the second half scared the you know what out of me even though he did a decent enough job.Davis' rebounding was okay but everything else, yuk.

- This might sound off but I think we just witnessed Rondo's average night for this team. 12 PPG, 6-7 APG, 5 RPG, 3 STPG, 1-2 TOPG and a bunch of fouls mixed in with great pressure defense. When he has really good games his stat lines are going to be something to behold.

- Can we now outwardly acknowledge that there is definitely a conspiracy afoot to make sure LeBron gets every questionable foul go his way. The refs went way out of their way to make sure LeBron got calls and only was called for the most obvious stuff. And the national outlets, never, and I mean never, replay any of his questionable stuff. He ran over three people last night and got the call every time and did we see one replay to confirm it wasn't a charge, nope. Just a closeup of LeBron getting up off the ground holding a body part as if he had just been shot. Someone needs to explain to me how LeBron gets decked by players who are inches smaller than him and who he outweighs by 60-70 lbs, how he gets up hobbling and holding his head or arm or hand in excruciating pain and yet somehow still has the courage to go on 5-6 times every game. The whole ordeal makes me ill.

- Guess the whole rotation question has been answered. The rooks are headed to the NBDL, Sam will be the defacto coach, and we will almost never see Scal and POB.

- Tom Thibodeau Associate Head Coach?? Was that his title last year, too??

- Could someone have please put a body on Andy Varajeo on the defensive boards in the second half. His ability to get offensive boards in the second half was embarrassing.

- Overall, I couldn't stop smiling throughout the whole pre-game ceremonies and wanted to punch the television set when I couldn't get to hear Paul's annual, first game thank you and pep talk for the first time ever. Hey, you're TNT, you have jettisoned the local outlets from televising the game. At least make sure you show everything happening at the game that the local outlets would have televised. I have never missed a Pierce first game speech and now I have because Reggie and the Czar had to babble on and on and on. That angered the ever living hell out of me.

- Could the TNT studio personnel and game announcers, who I know hate the Celtics, have been any more obviously biased towards any team not wearing green last night. "Lakers the the present, Portland is the future." "No one has the will to win like Kobe Bryant" during a Celtics telecast?? Every Celtic mistake was because the Cavs were doing something great?? The absolute vitriolic hate coming from Charles and Kenny Smith regarding the Celtics at times?? I'm not sure how much nationally televised games I will be able to tolerate this year from that group.

good points nick, TP. i'm with you on the shooting woes, i think that they got good looks, but everyone was off. (minus paul)

i attribute it to "what? i have to play basketball now??" post very emotonal ring ceremony. which is completly understandable, and also great to see them fight back out of in the second half.

TP. I completely agree with everything you said. Esp. about the TNT crew. Kenny was especially obnoxious with his view of Houston. I understand he is a bit of a homer because he played there and won championships. But for that reason alone I would think he would realize getting Artest is a risk and it could just as easily not work. Artest is crazy and not in a good way, like KG is.  :D At least Charles was able to be objective in that one case. Celtics even after winning a championship are being doubted completely. Well, we all know how the so-called 'experts' looked during the finals. C's will make them eat their predictions again.

One more thing, the Lebron hype is so bad that I am glad Lebron skipped the ring ceremony. All TNT would do is have the camera on the annointed one to see his reaction.

My thoughts on last night.

- Ring Ceremony/Banner Raising gave me goosebumps.  I took at least 20 pictures of it all.  The handoff of the trophy from Hondo to Pierce was emotional.  Great job by the organization putting it all together.  Also, extremely classy gesture giving a ring to Red's daughter.

-Echoing Nick's post, Pierce looks like he did 5-6 years ago weightwise.  Noticable difference.  I think its going to be a huge positive this season.  Great game by Paul to start the season.  Was able to attack the rim and his jumper was close to mid-season form.  A couple of questionable decisions on offense but nothing too ouf of the sort.

-O'Bryant must really be in the doghouse because last night was a perfect situation for him to get in considering the foul situation.  Instead, Doc went long spurts with Big Baby and Powe.  Mixed results there.  Powe was great on the offensive end while Big Baby looked out of it.  Some awkward jump shots by him.  Defensively, Varajao seemed to be effective on them and Ilgauskas had some good opportunities.  We were able to get away with the size mismatch last night but I have concerns down the road when we face some of the bigger front lines in the league.

-Tony Allen is an enigma.  I still don't know what to make of him.   I thought he did alright on defense last night.  His offensive game?  I don't know.  I still don't feel comfortable when the ball is in his hands.  He made some shots but I just don't think he's on the same page as everyone else.  Also, I didn't see the postgame press conference but why was he bringing the ball up instead of House when Rondo was out?  Doc just experimenting there.

-Offensively, the team struggled for much of the night.  A lot of missed shots and our 3 pt % was horrible.  I think some of it can be chalked up to first game jitters but if the outside shot isn't falling, I'd like to see the ball run inside more often.  More penetration rather than sitting around on the perimeter.  I also don't know what was up with that play call at the end of one of the quarters where KG ended up with a 3 pt attempt.  Ugly.  I think the kinks will be worked out and the offense will get more in sync.  KG couldn't have played much worse offensively.  We KNOW he'll bounce back.

One thing I forgot to mention, this game wasn't really even close in the second half. If the Celtics made their free throws at a normal 78-80%, this game was a runaway in the second half. They were dominant in the second half and no one anywhere mentioned the horrible free throw shooting of the Celtics really making this game appear closer than it was.

TP back atcha for this comment!! You are 1000% correct about this Nora. I would have had to go buy another television set this morning if they showed his face even once during that ceremony.

Also, Charles lauded the decision of the Cavs to stay in the locker room and not watch the ceremony but I thought it was a bad move all around.

1.) Mike Brown should have had his team out there watching it and used it as a coaching tool all year telling his team that this exact thing could be all theirs next year if they want it enough.

2.) The NBA should have forced the Cavs to have been there to witness it.

3.) During the 2005 season opener for the Sox I thought it was the classiest move of the New York Yankees to be there watching the whole ceremony and saluting their arch rivals and even having some fun and laughs during the player announcements. Classy move by the Yanks that year, a bit classless on the part of the Cavs not to be there.

I agree with this.  Not sure why the Cavs decided to hide from this.  I am sure the decision came from Lebron.  He was very upset that he couldn;t single handedly beat the Celtics in Game 7 last year.  If anything, I would think that watching the whole ceremony would have motivated him more.  Instead, I think he just didn't want to deal with it.  Shows that he is still very much a kid.  Finally, Lebron, please start making free throws.

One more thing, the Lebron hype is so bad that I am glad Lebron skipped the ring ceremony. All TNT would do is have the camera on the annointed one to see his reaction.

TP4U MMac for being able, as always, to be objective. If this was something that came directly from LeBron, then Danny Ferry and Mike Brown are nothing but dumb puppets catering to a spoiled child afraid because that child might take his ball and go play somewhere else with it. If you are right, Brown and Ferry lost any respect I had for them for letting a 23 year old player decide what was in the best interest of their franchise.

Lot of quotes here......I have a feeling this comes from Dan Gilbert and his 300 million dollar franchise that loses a ton of value if LBJ takes his ball and goes home
