Matchups to Watch
(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/PierceBos.jpg) vs (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/cleveland/LeBronCle2.jpg)
The matchup between Paul Pierce and LeBron James is always an entertaining one. When they last met in the playoffs, it was Pierce coming out on top in a classic shootout. LeBron will be looking to even the score.
(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/RondoBos.jpg) vs (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/milwaukee/MWilliamsMil.jpg)
The Cavs improved over the off season by bringing in Mo Williams to man the point. Throughout the playoffs, Rondo was able to take advantage of veteran point guards and out play them and hopefully he will be able to pick up where he left off.
X-Factor
(http://assets.sbnation.com/imported_assets/29392/102408shamrockjg10_medium.jpg)
The Celtics will be getting their rings and raising banner #17 to the ceiling before the game. This could go either way. It could serve as a distraction to the Celtics and motivation for LeBron who very much wants a ring himself. Or, it can be motivation for the Celtics who knowing how it feels want another one.

Yeah, make LeBron jealous.
17 times jealous!

Not friends, brothers.

Here's a little something to get y'all pumped
up for tonight! (Sorry, MORE pumped...)

my only regret about heading over to a "banner raiseing party" is that i won't be able to post in the first game thread fo the season :(
ah well
-
my only regret about heading over to a "banner raiseing party" is that i won't be able to post in the first game thread fo the season :(
ah well
I know what I'd pick!
-
Ah the day is finally here, it feels like Christmas morning. Happy Opening Day everyone.
-
The first step in repeating comes tonight.
-
I have a hunch we'll see Ray going
totally bananas from downtown tonight.
As in Game 6, 7-of-9.
-
I am anxious....
cannot wait
man i have a LOT of work to do
but most likely wont be done today....
Sorry boss.
-
I really hope I get home in time for this game, I am so excited. GO CELTICS!
-
I'm so ready...
I say we spank these Cavs like we did the Wiz last season.
-
Too bad that it's on a Tuesday instead of a Friday or Saturday. Oh well, the Celtics are here!!!
I am heading over to Boston to watch it with my brothers and friends. I am so pumped up, everything I see is green.
-
Delonte is starting at the 2 tonight, not Sasha. Expect him to be all over Ray Allen. Enjoy the banner raising tonight because you won't be having it next year. :)
Go Cavs!
-
I'm glad Delonte is getting the start. I still really like him. When I made the thread it was up in the air. I wouldn't bet against the Celtics repeating if I were you.
-
So who's inactive tonight? I predict it's Giddens, Cassell, and Scal
-
**Prediction**
If Lebron goes for over 35 points tonight, half of the heads on this board are going to explode over the SF position.
Im so psyched for tonight! Not just to see the fellas back in action, but to get some questions asnwered!! Whos inactive. Whos first off the bench. How does TA do. etc.
-
Ah, finally, the season is upon us again. I'm so giddy for this game! I'm wearing a completely green outfit now. :)
-
I can't believe the game is so close. I can't believe they won only 3 month ago, it felt like a year. :P
-
Remember to TP FL for the game thread effort!
-
I work until 9 EST, but I live in Columbus. I am going to RUN not WALK to the nearest bar after work.
I brought my Paul Pierce jersey with me too so I wouldn't have to go home to change. Always fly the flag!
-
Enjoy the banner raising tonight because you won't be having it next year. :)
Go Cavs!
Welcome back, MMac.
You're right:
We won't be having it.
Next year we'll be hoisting # 18 ;)
-
Delonte is starting at the 2 tonight, not Sasha. Expect him to be all over Ray Allen. Enjoy the banner raising tonight because you won't be having it next year. :)
Go Cavs!
Enjoy Lebron before he becomes a Net. ;D
Delonte is going to get lit up by Ray.
-
As a relative youngster, this is the first Celtics banner raising ceremony i get to watch. Glad the season is finally here.
-
Anyone try to watch the pregame show on Comcast? Am I the only one seeing a constant still image from a BowFlex commercial instead?
-
Nothing like basketball season. Just got off work, stopped at the gas station - bought me a couple bag of chips and a 6 pack of red bulls and I'm ready to lay on the couch. I love short off-seasons!
-
Anyone try to watch the pregame show on Comcast? Am I the only one seeing a constant still image from a BowFlex commercial instead?
I think the pre-game show starts half and hour before tip-off. I don't think they'll be showing the game on CSN, anyways, because TNT is airing the game.
-
What channel do we put it on to see pre-game ceremonies?
-
What channel do we put it on to see pre-game ceremonies?
TNT. If you have DirectTV the channel is 245.
PS: Who else can't wait to see what they're going to show on the jumbotron? Oh man, I'm like a 10 year old on Christmas Eve. Too excited.
-
I'm definitely watching the ring ceremony but unfortunately I can't stay up any later. It is already approaching 1am here and I have to work at 5. So I will be taping the game and watching it tomorrow...
-
My heroes: Malcolm X, Marvin Gaye, Red Auerbach, and Doc Rivers.
-
WOOT! Ring time!
-
Go Celts!
-
paul pierce getting that trophy from cousy, hondo, tommy, max, jo jo and all those guys is one of the best things i've ever seen.
-
Yay, Doc!
(See... I can forgive. ;))
-
Jesus, watching Paul Pierce right now is making it a little dusty in here.
Remember:
Turns out that Pierce is a basketball junkie. Watches all the playoff games once the Celtics get knocked out. Watches every NBA-related documentary on ESPN and Fox. Watches every old-school NBA game on ESPN Classic. Watches summer league games on ESPN2. Heck, he even coerced the Celtics into sending him game tapes of every Celtics game from the 2001 season, just so he could scout himself.
The guy simply loves basketball. Lives and breathes it. Better yet, unlike most of the guys in the league, he could pick Gus Williams out of a police lineup, he knows Andrew Toney had an unstoppable first step, he knows the Lakers wouldn't have won the '87 title without Mychal Thompson ... he's just a basketball fan who coincidentally happens to play basketball for a living. And he was sitting home last summer, night after night, watching all these games and documentaries, telling himself over and over again, "Some day, it's gonna be me ... some day it's gonna be me."
Good for him.
-
I just cried, seriously. My 6 year old nephew had to calm me down.
-
Wow. I have to say I'm surprised by how emotional that ceremony was for me.
I never thought it would happen again in my lifetime.
What an awesome piece of closure to a great run.
-
How emotional too see Paul.
Beautiful. I've waited 10 years
to see him like that. You could
really tell what it means to him.
17 is up where it belongs.
JUST BEAUTIFUL...
Now let's kick some Cavalier butt!
-
things definitely just got dusty in this room after seeing paul get his ring and raise the banner.
-
Who are the inactives?
-
Anyone try to watch the pregame show on Comcast? Am I the only one seeing a constant still image from a BowFlex commercial instead?
I think the pre-game show starts half and hour before tip-off. I don't think they'll be showing the game on CSN, anyways, because TNT is airing the game.
No, CSN still had their pre-game show with Tanguay and Marshall at 6:30 (and a post-game show scheduled for 10:30) ... it's just that they must have had technical difficulties (you could hear the audio but the video was nothing but a still image from a BoxFlex commercial).
I guess they're lucky they weren't scheduled to broadcast the game, or else the Boston sports scene would have had the NBA version of "Steve-Harvey Gate" (http://sports.aol.com/mlb/story/_a/tbs-problems-keep-first-part-of-alcs-off/n20081019013409990003)
-
That was great. I'm so happy for Paul Pierce. TNT should be playing his speech right now.
Reggie Miller thought he was watching 'The Notebook' all over again? Pretty cool Reggie...
-
special thanks goes out to Mike Fratello and his big fat mouth for talking while Pierce was addressing the crowd.
-
WE WANT EIGHTEEN
WE WANT EIGHTEEN
WE WANT EIGHTEEN
WE WANT EIGHTEEN
WE WANT EIGHTEEN
WE WANT EIGHTEEN
WE WANT EIGHTEEN
WE WANT EIGHTEEN
-
A little sloppy so far...
-
missing a lot of open shots early...
-
youk in the house.
-
Sweet! A closeup of Craig Sager's nasty thumbnail!
-
PERK IS A BEAST
-
pierce not helping wally world up.... gold
-
i agree
-
POWE!
-
Let's go Celtics! Not the best start but Pierce is a beast out there.
-
Gotta love the energy Powe always brings off the bench...
-
Powe picking up where he left off.
-
Best basketball player in the world = Paul Pierce. ;)
-
Powe picking up where he left off.
im pretty sure CSN's got him mic'd up. im siked for that.
-
Nice finish by Pierce. 11 Points in the 1st quarter. Once everyone settles down we'll be just fine.
-
Seem to be settling down after a bad start (shooting).
Love how Pierce is playing.
Powe is pimping. (Credit BassThumper).
Reffing sucks. 6-3 in fouls. 10 fta for Clev to our 3.
-
weathered a storm there in the first. in a good place to be down just 6 after 1 though.
leon powe is the man.
-
Tony Allen seems so much more confident this season.
-
We are just missing all of the bunnies tonight, aren't we? Bad times. Refs are doing their best to ruin our lives as well.
-
We are just missing all of the bunnies tonight, aren't we? Bad times. Refs are doing their best to ruin our lives as well.
(5 seconds before the game)
Stern to ref: Give them hell. Their fans booed me.
Ref to Stern: You got it, boss.
;D. Just kidding.
-
okay time to get tony allen off the floor
-
This unit is not working as one, time to shake it up a bit.
-
not crazy about this lineup - need to get Ray Allen some more shots in this group
-
Very interesting that TA is the first option out there.
-
Tony Allen looks like hes in a And1 tournament.
Looks great on the defense end though.
-
why are we letting tony allen shoot the ball?
-
Man, do I hope I'm wrong about Tony Allen.
What happened to ball movement?
-
Man, do I hope I'm wrong about Tony Allen.
What happened to ball movement?
Tony Allen happened to it.
-
They look so much better when Rondo is running things. In for 2 seconds and immediately makes things happen.
-
getting ALOT of good looks but not hitting any of them.
-
My thoughts so far on the game:
-Powe is a beast I hope he continues on this path that started in the finals
-When playing the Cavs you need to attack Varejo, that guy is a tree all the way up to his hair.
-LeBron still hasn't gotten a consistent shot
-Tony Allen pass the ball
-
clevo just got rondo'd
-
Ilgauskas must want Perk to end his career for him.
-
* Notice Paul Pierce comes back in the game, but Doc takes TA out instead of giving Ray a breather. Rays played the whole half so far.
Last year when Paul came back in he'd spell Ray, so they all got an equal breather. Doc cant be happy with TA's minutes with the offense.
...I'd be psyched if we got a look at Bill Walker in the second half.
-
Perk looks solid so far, great hustle.
Need to keep Lebron off his game.
Rondo just got hammered! Ouch. Hope he's ok.
-
the cavs are completely incapable of committing a charge tonight apparently. what a joke.
-
Another foul.. great. We're rusty, huh? Like previous posters said we're missing the bunnies. Hopefully, we can get it together by the 2nd half.
-
Is it me or does Rondo look faster this year.
-
pretty terrible last "play"
-
Ray Allen played the entire half. Not happy at all about it.
-
Is it me or does Rondo look faster this year.
He does, which I didn't think was physically possible.
Only down 7, they'll step it up in the second half once they make some adjustments.
That play by Lebron was absurd, he's scary.
-
Is it me or does Rondo look faster this year.
I thought that, too, you´re not alone...
-
All in all, I'll take being down 7. We've missed too many bunnies. TA was a little out of control. Reffing is very pro Cav. Cavs got away with a lot of hacks and charges. Big Z and Sideshow Bob are both cheap hackers.
-
just noticed that during the game, a scoreboard shows up on the front page of the blog now - that's pretty neat - nice job Trei and SBN crew
-
It seems the game plan is to go at Wally. Hence all of the shots for Tony Allen. I like the idea just Tony isn't a post player. He needs to take Wally off the dribble.
The Rooks are inactive, correct? I saw Scal and POB in unis so it have to be the rooks and obviously The Alien not in uni.
I wish Pruit would get a chance to run the second unit instead of House. House is better as the two and when his shot is off he doesn't help the offence. They need someone to creat for the second unit.
Aside for that they played well, just couldn't knock down the open looks.
-
Cavs have an extra 10 pts from the line and they're shooting it about 15-20% better than they normally do. We need to hit a 3 (0-9).
Pierce has looked great. Hopefully KG and Ray step it up in the 2nd half. Also love Perk's hustle and D.
-
I'm kinda excited to see the Lakers vs Blazers game. Should be fun to watch.
-
C's are 0-9 from 3-ville. Take it to the paint in the 2nd, fellas.
-
The Lakers are the present, and the Blazers are the future?
What are we? A Box of Cookies?
-
It seems the game plan is to go at Wally. Hence all of the shots for Tony Allen. I like the idea just Tony isn't a post player. He needs to take Wally off the dribble.
They went after Wally with Powe in the game and he didnt look like a blackhole on offense.
It was amazing how during that small strecth our entire offense became ME first. It spread. Everyone caught and shot. No ball movement.
-
Paul Pierce is the truth for another season. Love it! Dropped 10 lbs!
House, Allen start making those wide open shots and we will be good.
-
Pierce!
-
C's are 0-9 from 3-ville. Take it to the paint in the 2nd, fellas.
ray allen and paul pierce just said for you to shut up :D
-
Everyone looks skinnier. Go Perk!!!
-
>:( Perk looks strong so far, within 1 now. Here we go.
-
Perk is great tonight.
The Big Beef!
-
Perk is great tonight.
The Big Beef!
I hope his jumper becomes a weapon this season.
-
Ouch, I don't like how Rondo is getting hit like he's DWade.
-
Ouch, I don't like how Rondo is getting hit like he's DWade.
Gabe Pruitt don't quit practicing. :-[
-
Wow, Rondo is getting absolutely hammered. That needs to stop. Tommy would be going nuts right now.
-
Wow, Rondo is getting absolutely hammered. That needs to stop. Tommy would be going nuts right now.
tommy IS going nuts right now, you know he's watching.
-
I like that he's attacking the basket just wish he could stay on his feet.
-
Neither of these clubs is playing very well, but I saw what I needed to see. The Celtics found a way to take the lead after grinding it out for the first half.
Now I can move on to what I want to see: a win ;D
-
Rondo wide open there but he didn't take the shot. He needs to take that shot.
-
Rondo wide open there but he didn't take the shot. He needs to take that shot.
He did that same thing every game he played in the preseason. :-\
-
Not important but anyway:
I think KG changed shoes at the half(?)
-
Not important but anyway:
I think KG changed shoes at the half(?)
He better changes his shot, too.
I think he´s totally off, offensively.
-
PP on fire!
-
Pierce is putting the moves on Bron Bron
-
Who saw that crossover?
-
time for the takeover. leon powe.
-
Let's close this one out. Pierce came to play tonight. So did Powe.
-
Pierce is coming to play. I love KG but his shot is ugly tonight. Much better D in the 2nd half and we're getting to the line. Close it out boys.
-
We got a ballgame here thats for sure. Come on C's turn on the momentum.
-
Pierce is coming to play. I love KG but his shot is ugly tonight. Much better D in the 2nd half and we're getting to the line. Close it out boys.
Refs are not helping.
-
Ugh what is with the refs.
-
tommy point TA?
-
Tony Allen!
-
Tony Allen is the man.
-
tommy point TA?
make that two!!!
-
Big Baby shooting long jumpers?not a good idea.
-
My goodness. Powe!
-
TP for 0 as well.
-
my hero! Powe!
-
That was absurd Leon Powe my god.
-
Oh my God, Powe Pimpin!!!
-
As PP syas, "that's how you do it"
Paul and Tony attack the rim. And Leon brings down the thunder!
-
That dunk.. ohh man. I'm still jumping.. and yelling.. and fist pumping. Jeeze.
-
Lebron's a great player, one of the best. But why do analysts feel the need to make him some kind of god-like figure.
-
Lebron's a great player, one of the best. But why do analysts feel the need to make him some kind of god-like figure.
he can't even hit an outside shot. or a consistant mid-range shot.
-
Big Baby shooting long jumpers?not a good idea.
Yup. Not a good idea at all.
-
He could miss 10 in a row and they would find a way to make him look good by saying, "oh well, they hit the rim nicely."
-
He could miss 10 in a row and they would find a way to make him look good by saying, "oh well, they hit the rim nicely."
You're right.
*Lebron crosses over Scalabrine at halfcourt and airball a lay-up*
Reggie Miller: OMG! Did you see that crossover?!?
-
good thing the referees decided they want the cavs to win this game.
-
good thing the referees decided they want the cavs to win this game.
Let's not start this already.
-
not a big fan of the way Doc is closing out this game. Pierce should have been out there for more of this 4th quarter. If that meant he needed to be pulled sooner in the 3rd, then so be it. But keeping him out until there's less than 6 min left is bogus.
-
its 40 minutes into the season...thats plenty of time to complain. tommy heinson only makes it like 40 seconds.
-
Rondo is going to be in the hot tub tonight.
-
looked like rondo had a clean lane to basket, i dont know why he used that move.
-
Powe for Perk might be a good thing.
-
Powe for Perk might be a good thing.
perk had a good game, lots of offensive rebounds. but powe is an upgrade, theres a reason he's the 6th man of this team.
-
Rondo is going to be in the hot tub tonight.
Are you his roommate?
-
Rondo is taking over. He's going to have an unbelievable season.
His speed is unreal he's one of the quickest players I've ever seen. Just needs to make sure all those falls to the floor don't take a toll.
-
Till the last stretch, Perk played well. Good rebounding, good outlets, good 'd'. His hands looked strong tonight -- really grabbed the ball. Also, impressed with TA in second half and of course Leon.
Poor offensive game for RA and KG and C's still in position to win.
Will someone please box out Varejo?
-
Ray Allen will not be wearing a smile when he views tonight's game tape. Yowzers.
-
Big shot by KG and good box out of Z.
And BTW, Lebron is simply great -- there is no need to suggest he is overrated or overhyped or over-loved by announcers -- he is an all-time great talent just entering his prime. He deserves the hype.
-
Who gets the shot here?
The answer, #34.
-
Anybody guesstimate how many times Ilgauskas has traveled tonite?
-
Lebron could take a big crap at center court and craig sager would scoop it up and put it in a glass case to show all his friends.
-
Rondo is going to be in the hot tub tonight.
Are you his roommate?
Too hot in the hot tub!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jdjv5ZwQcdQ
-
Who gets the shot here?
The answer, #34.
Though it wasn't a good one.
-
Lebron could take a big crap at center court and craig sager would scoop it up and put it in a glass case to show all his friends.
or make a suit out of it.
-
Anybody guesstimate how many times Ilgauskas has traveled tonite?
Ilgauskas only travels, dribbling is not an option. They should call him for not traveling.
-
Lebron could take a big crap at center court and craig sager would scoop it up and put it in a glass case to show all his friends.
or make a suit out of it.
TP, that is really funny.
-
choke choke! ahem ahem, choke choke!
-
best inbound i've ever seen. (offensively)
-
Light the the cigar!!!
-
POWE PIMPIN!!!!!!
-
lebron at the line?choke choke! ahem, ahem, Choke!
-
Little House is making that ref mad.
-
little house is the man!i love watching that little kid at the games.
-
Little House is making that ref mad.
refs are making me mad.
-
Solid win against a good team on a night when everyone would have given them a pass for a half-hearted effort.
-
1-0 baby! I love Leon Powe.
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7YJfT7D4n0
Goosebumps.
-
celtics postgame, now we can hear paul address to the crowd.
-
Ugly win, but I'll take it.
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7YJfT7D4n0
Goosebumps.
TP! Beautiful.
Goodnight, gentlemen...
-
Fun gaaame, oh man basketball is really back.
-
Well 29 teams may be out to get us, but they won't catch us. Nice way to open the season.
TA may the only player where you see the good and bad version on the same play. Still he made a nice contribution off the bench.
-
quick game... nice moving feeling to it.
ray allen looked old but pierce still looked like mvp material.
after a full season, rondo still can't finish his favorite behind the back fake pass layup move.
powe is a beast.
garnett looks like where he was in the finals- a little lost.
-
powe + TA can replace james posey, TA with the perimiter D and leadership, Powe with the fouls and energy off the bench. and the 3 pointers... we'll just get them in a diferent way.
-
little house is the man!i love watching that little kid at the games.
TP. Little House rocks.
-
powe + TA can replace james posey, TA with the perimiter D and leadership, Powe with the fouls and energy off the bench. and the 3 pointers... we'll just get them in a diferent way.
meant the charges not "fouls"
-
Well that's 1 W in the bag 81 more to go. Who's next?
Anyone else find themselves laughing while watching the Lakers play. Sort of like in a "Haha we beat those losers" type of way. It's funny watching them and there imaginary championship swagger. Losers...
-
whew finally i was able to figure my way into the forums :o
seems like twas a new game. i was pretty mad when i switched on my tv and what i saw was Bucks vs Bulls. i mean come on!!! the celtics are the freakin champs and you start the season showing bulls vs bucks?!
hows everyone guys? i followed the game thru the box scores at yahoo as usual ;D

Well that's 1 W in the bag 81 more to go. Who's next?
Anyone else find themselves laughing while watching the Lakers play. Sort of like in a "Haha we beat those losers" type of way. It's funny watching them and there imaginary championship swagger. Losers...
Did you see odem throw the pass to sasha who was standing up from the bench? that made me laugh.

Definitely TP worthy...I've watched this like 3 times already. Thanks for posting it.

Great game. Watched it with my buddy from Cleveland (who wasn't too happy about the outcome).
-
Big Baby shooting long jumpers?not a good idea.
Yup. Not a good idea at all.
As my buddy from Cleveland said during the game, "Yup, we'll let him take that shot all game...."
Love seeing the effort from TA and my man Powe (Cal product, like me ;) ). My only complaint: it wasn't enough of a blow out that we got to see Walker, Giddens, Pruitt and POB.
-
Yeh, Big Baby looks terrible shooting them. Enough for now.

watched this one at the bar, so here's my post game thoughts
awesome raising ceremony. Defintly some dust around the bar area during pierce getting his ring heh.
would have loved to listen to his speech, to bad the production crew had reggie miller blabbing over it, and then, in the middle of it JACKED REGGIES MIC so that i couldn't hear pierce at all. way to know what people turned in for guys, it wasen't reggie waxing on about his career.
from the game: 1st half was fustrating, because outside of the captain, we couldn't throw a brick in the ocean. and the most fustrating part was that we were getting good looks, just missing them. Ring lag for sure hehe. the encoruging part was we could play that bad and stay in it.
2nd half, we got back to work. great team D, better (though clearly still off) contributions from ray ray and KG, and leon kept on keeping on.
Paul was paul :D
and, since i was a noted "TA is probley not going to help us much" guy, who has been intiruged by his preseason, for his first game, let me be the first to give him a
(http://msp273.photobucket.com/albums/jj223/DannyLaggy/borat.jpg)
for his time on the floor. keep it up tony, i'd be super happy to be wrong :D

Yup. The positives definitely outweighed a couple of mistakes with the basketball.
Sloppy game, but the defensive definitely was elevated to championship level in the second half.
Urge all of you to check the box scores - too many minutes for Allen, especially, Garnett and Pierce. Still believe we need a reliable backup 5 and a perimeter shooter off the bench to repeat.

im nto sure, to be honest, that it would change how doc uses ray (i.e to much)
doc tends to treat ray ray like tim wakefield, he can go forever in doc's mind.
not that it seemed to hurt us last year, and ray is probley the most "in shape" celtic, barring mabey rajon.

My laptop crashed and I couldn't get to the site last night so my thoughts on what I saw last night:
- Pierce's loss of weight really improved his first step and he schooled LeBron many times or LeBron put on more muscle weight slowing him down forcing him to try to anticipate moves and look really bad a bunch of times. Maybe a little of both but probably a bit more of the former than the latter.
- Tony Allen is still Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He was awful in the first half being almost incapable of keeping up with Boobie Gibson and doing his best impersonation of Sam Cassell while almost shooting the team out of the game. Then in the second half he made those two rather ill advised drives to the basket that had good results and suddenly his defense returned and he was going baseline over LeBron.
- The announcers were playing up the Cavs defensive effort at halftime but what I saw was the Celtics missing a ton of open looks, especially Ray and KG. The Celtics got the shots they wanted out of the starters but just missed open looks.
- Except for Powe and Tony's second half, the bench was not good. Eddie was off and showed that he still has a lot of trouble with pressure. Watching Tony bring up the ball in the second half scared the you know what out of me even though he did a decent enough job.Davis' rebounding was okay but everything else, yuk.
- This might sound off but I think we just witnessed Rondo's average night for this team. 12 PPG, 6-7 APG, 5 RPG, 3 STPG, 1-2 TOPG and a bunch of fouls mixed in with great pressure defense. When he has really good games his stat lines are going to be something to behold.
- Can we now outwardly acknowledge that there is definitely a conspiracy afoot to make sure LeBron gets every questionable foul go his way. The refs went way out of their way to make sure LeBron got calls and only was called for the most obvious stuff. And the national outlets, never, and I mean never, replay any of his questionable stuff. He ran over three people last night and got the call every time and did we see one replay to confirm it wasn't a charge, nope. Just a closeup of LeBron getting up off the ground holding a body part as if he had just been shot. Someone needs to explain to me how LeBron gets decked by players who are inches smaller than him and who he outweighs by 60-70 lbs, how he gets up hobbling and holding his head or arm or hand in excruciating pain and yet somehow still has the courage to go on 5-6 times every game. The whole ordeal makes me ill.
- Guess the whole rotation question has been answered. The rooks are headed to the NBDL, Sam will be the defacto coach, and we will almost never see Scal and POB.
- Tom Thibodeau Associate Head Coach?? Was that his title last year, too??
- Could someone have please put a body on Andy Varajeo on the defensive boards in the second half. His ability to get offensive boards in the second half was embarrassing.
- Overall, I couldn't stop smiling throughout the whole pre-game ceremonies and wanted to punch the television set when I couldn't get to hear Paul's annual, first game thank you and pep talk for the first time ever. Hey, you're TNT, you have jettisoned the local outlets from televising the game. At least make sure you show everything happening at the game that the local outlets would have televised. I have never missed a Pierce first game speech and now I have because Reggie and the Czar had to babble on and on and on. That angered the ever living hell out of me.
- Could the TNT studio personnel and game announcers, who I know hate the Celtics, have been any more obviously biased towards any team not wearing green last night. "Lakers the the present, Portland is the future." "No one has the will to win like Kobe Bryant" during a Celtics telecast?? Every Celtic mistake was because the Cavs were doing something great?? The absolute vitriolic hate coming from Charles and Kenny Smith regarding the Celtics at times?? I'm not sure how much nationally televised games I will be able to tolerate this year from that group.

good points nick, TP. i'm with you on the shooting woes, i think that they got good looks, but everyone was off. (minus paul)
i attribute it to "what? i have to play basketball now??" post very emotonal ring ceremony. which is completly understandable, and also great to see them fight back out of in the second half.

TP. I completely agree with everything you said. Esp. about the TNT crew. Kenny was especially obnoxious with his view of Houston. I understand he is a bit of a homer because he played there and won championships. But for that reason alone I would think he would realize getting Artest is a risk and it could just as easily not work. Artest is crazy and not in a good way, like KG is. :D At least Charles was able to be objective in that one case. Celtics even after winning a championship are being doubted completely. Well, we all know how the so-called 'experts' looked during the finals. C's will make them eat their predictions again.
One more thing, the Lebron hype is so bad that I am glad Lebron skipped the ring ceremony. All TNT would do is have the camera on the annointed one to see his reaction.

My thoughts on last night.
- Ring Ceremony/Banner Raising gave me goosebumps. I took at least 20 pictures of it all. The handoff of the trophy from Hondo to Pierce was emotional. Great job by the organization putting it all together. Also, extremely classy gesture giving a ring to Red's daughter.
-Echoing Nick's post, Pierce looks like he did 5-6 years ago weightwise. Noticable difference. I think its going to be a huge positive this season. Great game by Paul to start the season. Was able to attack the rim and his jumper was close to mid-season form. A couple of questionable decisions on offense but nothing too ouf of the sort.
-O'Bryant must really be in the doghouse because last night was a perfect situation for him to get in considering the foul situation. Instead, Doc went long spurts with Big Baby and Powe. Mixed results there. Powe was great on the offensive end while Big Baby looked out of it. Some awkward jump shots by him. Defensively, Varajao seemed to be effective on them and Ilgauskas had some good opportunities. We were able to get away with the size mismatch last night but I have concerns down the road when we face some of the bigger front lines in the league.
-Tony Allen is an enigma. I still don't know what to make of him. I thought he did alright on defense last night. His offensive game? I don't know. I still don't feel comfortable when the ball is in his hands. He made some shots but I just don't think he's on the same page as everyone else. Also, I didn't see the postgame press conference but why was he bringing the ball up instead of House when Rondo was out? Doc just experimenting there.
-Offensively, the team struggled for much of the night. A lot of missed shots and our 3 pt % was horrible. I think some of it can be chalked up to first game jitters but if the outside shot isn't falling, I'd like to see the ball run inside more often. More penetration rather than sitting around on the perimeter. I also don't know what was up with that play call at the end of one of the quarters where KG ended up with a 3 pt attempt. Ugly. I think the kinks will be worked out and the offense will get more in sync. KG couldn't have played much worse offensively. We KNOW he'll bounce back.
-
One thing I forgot to mention, this game wasn't really even close in the second half. If the Celtics made their free throws at a normal 78-80%, this game was a runaway in the second half. They were dominant in the second half and no one anywhere mentioned the horrible free throw shooting of the Celtics really making this game appear closer than it was.

Forgot to mention that, free throwing shooting was horrible. Guys like Ray and Pierce going 1-2. KG missed a pair. Not pretty.

TP back atcha for this comment!! You are 1000% correct about this Nora. I would have had to go buy another television set this morning if they showed his face even once during that ceremony.
Also, Charles lauded the decision of the Cavs to stay in the locker room and not watch the ceremony but I thought it was a bad move all around.
1.) Mike Brown should have had his team out there watching it and used it as a coaching tool all year telling his team that this exact thing could be all theirs next year if they want it enough.
2.) The NBA should have forced the Cavs to have been there to witness it.
3.) During the 2005 season opener for the Sox I thought it was the classiest move of the New York Yankees to be there watching the whole ceremony and saluting their arch rivals and even having some fun and laughs during the player announcements. Classy move by the Yanks that year, a bit classless on the part of the Cavs not to be there.

I agree with this. Not sure why the Cavs decided to hide from this. I am sure the decision came from Lebron. He was very upset that he couldn;t single handedly beat the Celtics in Game 7 last year. If anything, I would think that watching the whole ceremony would have motivated him more. Instead, I think he just didn't want to deal with it. Shows that he is still very much a kid. Finally, Lebron, please start making free throws.

TP4U MMac for being able, as always, to be objective. If this was something that came directly from LeBron, then Danny Ferry and Mike Brown are nothing but dumb puppets catering to a spoiled child afraid because that child might take his ball and go play somewhere else with it. If you are right, Brown and Ferry lost any respect I had for them for letting a 23 year old player decide what was in the best interest of their franchise.

Lot of quotes here......I have a feeling this comes from Dan Gilbert and his 300 million dollar franchise that loses a ton of value if LBJ takes his ball and goes home

yeah he should have practiced a couple more!

True dat.
