Key Matchups
(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/RondoBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/DWestBos.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Delonte West
Just as he did with Mike Bibby, Rajon Rondo out-played Delonte West by a big margin.  When Rondo goes out, however, the ball movement seems to stop.  We need Rondo to stay out of foul trouble and to stay on the court.  He is vital to this team's success.  As we saw when he was in Boston, Delonte is a streaky shooter.  He wasn't hitting in the last game and may come out hitting everything in this game.

(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/PierceBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/cleveland/LebronCavs.jpg)
Paul Pierce vs LeBron James
This matchup didn't disappoint in the first game but instead of being an offensive duel, it was a defensive duel.  Pierce shot just 4-14 and Lebron was 4-18.  Whether it was because of their defensive efforts or just an off shooting night, we aren't likely to see both of these stars shooting this poorly 2 games in a row.

Honorable Mention
Kevin Garnett vs Ben Wallace (Joe Smith)
Kevin Garnett seemed to get anything he wanted on the court in the first game.  For much of the game, KG was matched up against Joe Smith because of Wallace's limitations on offense and the free throw line. Wallace does a good job on KG defensively but with him in, KG can double off of Wallace on the other end.  This is a matchup the Celtics should look to exploit.

(http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/FLCeltsFan12/keys_togame.jpg) to the game

Defense  The first game was a defensive battle of epic proportions with the Cavs shooting just 31% and the Celtics shooting just 43%.  LeBron was held to just 2-18 from the field which was a career low in field goal percentage.  The Celtics' defense won this game for them when 2/3 of the Big 3 were a combined 2-18.  The Celtics have to continue to play that swarming team defense as it is the key to winning.

Rebounding   The Cavs are a very good rebounding team with 7'3" Ilgauskas leading the way.   The Celtics need to crash the boards on the defensive end  to keep the Cavs from getting 2nd and 3rd chances at the basket.  They also have to go after offensive rebounds, especially if they shoot as poorly as they did in game 1.

Be Aggressive  The Celtics need to be aggressive right from the beginning of the game.  They have to be aggressive taking the ball to the basket and not settle for jumpers.  They have to be aggressive in going after loose balls and rebounds as well.   In game 1, once again they had a big lead after 1 and then slacked off when the starters went out and lost it.  The bench has to be just as aggressive in taking it to the hoop, going after loose balls and rebounds and in swarming them on defense.

X-Factor
Bench Play    The Celtics' bench must produce.  They have to not let up on defense when they come in for the starters and they have to stay just as aggressive as the starters.   Sam Cassell has to move the basketball and keep the offense going.  It seems as though when Sam comes in the ball movement stops.

Personally, I want to see the ball fed to KG 50 times per game the rest of the series.  He's the one player they really can't match up against.  Ben Wallace Ds him up a little better than Smith, but then  KG can just roam around on defense and wreak havoc.

This is a series where Pierce and Allen need to understand that their offense is going to be tough to come by and their efforts are better served defensively.  Get KG the ball, let him attack, and if the Cavs decide to try and stop that, THEN Ray and Pierce can find their scoring.  And Rondo needs to attack!  All game!  Not just for a short burst when Pierce/Ray go to the bench.

This is not the series to "share".  KG presents a big mismatch for the Cavs, and failing to take advantage of it would be silly.

Perk is helpless against Z but as long as KG is playing free safety in our D I am OK with it. I'd much rather have Z lead them in scoring.

Rondo's havin a crappy start to this game and Ray Allen needs to get his head in this game, better yet head in this series.

And can someone please never leave Ilgauskas's side?

Not looking good so far.  >:(      Z making too many wide-open jumpers.

Celtics offense sucking again. Why does it seem they have no idea where to get their shots?  Cavs doubling KG more aggressively.  Is Ray seriously going to let Wally outplay him?

Alright, Sam comes in and provides instant offense.

Cassell is in a shooting groove and keeping the Celtics calm.  I think he should get some of Ray Allen's minutes, which would allow us to take advantage of Rondo's speed....

Right now, both Rondo And Cassell are giving us more than Ray Allen.....

I remember Chuck, Kenny, Ernie, and C-Webb saying how much better Cleveland's bench is the other night ... excuse me? What was that?!?

yeah lets hope our starters can hold them at the beginning of the 3rd quarter til we can get the bench in.

Push this ball!!!!!!!!!!!!
No walking it anymore!!!!
Defensive rebound equals pushing the ball!
Their transition defense is at a lost...
WE should not keep the ball in the hand of one player... As soon as he as it look in front of you and pass it right away!
Hope the coaches will be smart enough to notice this!!

I'm losing my unconditional support for Ray Allen... :-(
Always thought that he will be the one scoring the decisive 3 pointer in the final to give us the championship but with the way he is playing right now, I dt even know if we will make it that far...
Com'on! Step up RAY !

Iglaukas 3 fouls... Go straight at him!!!

big 2nd half for Rondo, he needs to get his mojo going.  I think there was some carryover from his 4th Q benching in game 1, he looked very hesitant out there to start the game.  We may win this game (and series) with Sam I Am but these team needs a confident Rondo to make the finals.

As for Ray Allen, I'm befuddled.  He not forcing things but seemed to pass up several decent looks in the 1st half.

Rondo's problem is that he is constantly jumping in the air to pass the ball. Its a bad habit he picked up in the Atlanta series. Stay on the ground Rajon.

Ray Allen is missing shots and just looks old out there. I wonder if he is sick or something.

Celtics are 7-16 from the FT line. If they hit their FTs this would be a double digit lead right now, anywhere up to 17 point lead.

The Celtics are doing a much better job in this series of refusing to settle for three point shots. Only 5 threes in the first half.

The last time (earlier this season) Ray played like this they sat him down to heal up and the injuries were announced afterward.  My only guess at an explanation is he's hurting somehow.

Cleveland doesn't have the shot blockers inside that Atlanta does. The C's were intimidated by Horford and Smith in Atlanta. Lebron is Clevelands only Plus athlete. So as long as he is guarding a man outside there isn't much to fear from Cleveland. Wallace being out isn't helping Cleveland either.

What I'm seeing is a lot of double teaming and trapping from Cleveland on Ray.  They're taking him off the game.  His missed one jumper where he was fouled, a runner, and a 3 pointer that looked great and rattled out.  He's also been finding open people when they double team him, but those people have blown the opportunity.  Let's see if we can exploit this in the 2nd half. I really want him to get it going because I think he's feeling good about his shot tonight.

Great start to the second half. Celtics need to keep this lead at around 15 going into the fourth. Cavs don't have the firepower to make back that type of lead. If it's around 10 it'll still be a ball game.

Next 6 minutes is the time to show off their killer instinct

The NBA doesn't want a blowout, if the c's sweep they dont make as much money as if it went 7 games, and a blowout makes them loose more money. As for the Lebron, he should have took up acting instead of basket ball, as i am sure when he retires he will become an actor. The foul on Perk when Lebron grabbed his arm down low was pitiful. If they keep the ball out of Lebron's hands and out of Pierce's hand(to keep it away from Lebron's acting) the C's should be able to keep the points down.

I can't decide whether this is one of those good game (Bos)/bad games (Cle) or if this matchup is further apart than I initially thought.

The Celtics defense on LeBron James has been far superior than I expected.

..... This game is all but over right now. Gives Cleveland a chance to try out this smaller lineup with Bron at power forward, let's see if this works, if it does we'll probably see it in game three.

I am sure Cleveland will rebound after tonight and play much better at home (not saying they necessarily will win), but I think if the C's play D and attack, Cleveland can't match up. It's like Doc said at halftime of game one, "If we run, there's only one guy on that team that can keep up."

They won't go down because there's no rhythm to them.  This is what people don't understand about the Celtics' D all season, and why teams always seemed to play bad when they played against us because they suddenly can't hit open shots. We take teams out of their comfort zone and their rhythm, that's what a good defense does and why people can't hit those open jumpers.

I'd like to see Doc put Rajon back in now.  The kid's got enough rest.  Time to get back to uptempo basketball.
On second thought, they're up 22 and it's not a bad idea to slow the pace down.   ;D

C's have Lebaby looking like he just wants to go film another commercial. I just hope this game is over before Lost starts.

Why, because a 22 point lead with 4 minutes left isn't enough?

Deffinitly true, but the series isn't.

Only complaint tonight, why all the empty seats? The game might be out of reach, but how can you leave a playoff game early? The bandwagoners with the expensive tickets must have somewhere more important to be.

I typed that post with around 6mins left.  Was concerned more that the offense suddenly got to a crawl after the blistering pace set by rondo in the 3rd.  I did take it back in a following post which you did not catch.

Great win for the C's they need to keep it up in game 3 unlike against the Hawks, and win on the road, if the C's can take one game from Cleavland they are in great shape.

My sentiments exactly! When I go to a C's game they practically have to shut out the lights and push me out the door!! Come on fans show some Celtic Pride, the team deserves a standing O at the buzzer!!!

PP's FT shooting has been shaky throughout the playoffs.  Thats another thing that got me nervous.

i maintain its hold over from that strained lower back, if you watch him, he pulls out of that crouch as fast as he can, its throwing off his release.

This would also explain for why he's money on the second, he notices it and corrects it.

Championship level hoops by the boys tonight.  First time this playoffs we've really seen the full capacity of this team.  This is the stuff that got us all excited about the prospects.

Beautiful!

Doc did a great job tonight. He changed up the timing off his substitutions in the first quarter, trusted his bench and allowed them to do their thing and get this team back in the game. I loved how he left Sam Cassell in instead of going back to Rondo.

I loved how he went to Ray to start the game and then went right back to Ray Allen to start the third quarter. That really helped him get going.

Absa-tively/  Perfect night for Doc as well.  Doc did an awesome job of leaving the hot hands in (even extending them past their usual minutes) Sticking with Powe for 28 minutes was huge.  Classic Leon tonight.

very satisfying win.

let's see how things go in cleveland now - the cavs & fans will be planning an ambush for the Celts.

the Celts were so up & down in the atlanta series and had to get jacked way up again for game 7 - i was worried they night come out a little flat ofr one of these home games vs cleveland. fortunately they brought the defensive focus to both games. i like the way they played with a quiet determination and concentration on execution.

here's hoping the Celt's are growing into a steady, focused playoff rhythym that will continue in cleveland.

Who says you can't defend LeBron?!? I think we showed quite effectively that it CAN be done. And all the stuff that Ernie, Chuck, Kenny, and C-Webb said about Cleveland's bench being so much better than ours .... sorry, boys, but you got THAT one wrong, too! Think we'll get a change of heart or an apology? Nope ... they'll just find a couple of new things to bash us with. No agenda? Yeah ... right!

lol...this thread brings back memories.

I was deployed back then...we were in Guam, or about to pull into Guam...I remember going back and forth and talking trash with some Detroit fan...this guy thought that DET was going to push BOS around.

Love this team...more memories to come this season, too...tonight included. :)
